Day 1 Nagoya Arrival | Airport & Station Pick-Up, Hotel Check-in

Konnichiwa(こんにちは)!Welcome to Central Japan! This region is sandwiched between bustling Kanto (Tokyo) and Kansai (Kyoto and Osaka), but is famous for its traditional towns, villages, and stunning Alpine natural scenery.

We provide accommodation in Nagoya. Upon your arrival at Nagoya's Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) or Nagoya Station, you can head to your hotel to check in. Have a rest and you will have a healing central Japan hiking tour.

Free Time Idea:

If you have free time, consider a self-guided food tour in Nagoya. Miso Katsu (fried pork cutlet with miso sauce), Hitsumabushi (grilled eel served three ways), and Nagoya-style fried chicken wings are top choices among locals.

Alternatively, head to Midland Square, the tallest building in Central Japan. From the 46th floor, you can admire the shining night cityscape. You'll be captivated by city lights twinkling like stars on the ground.

Day 2 Nagoya - Nakasendo - Matsumoto | Hiking from Magome to Tsumago

Today, you will start classic Nakasendo trail tour from Magome to Tsumago.

We offer train tickets from Nagoya to Nakatsugawa. After a 1.3-hour train ride, you can take a bus to Magomejuku, the entrance to the Edo period Nakasendo Trail. This trail is about 530 kilometers (330 miles) long, it connected Tokyo and Kyoto, crossing mountains and basins in Central Japan. It was one of the main land routes used by ancient travelers, merchants, samurai, and daimyos. You'll hike the popular Magome-Tsumago section, a trail that is suitable for most visitors.

Hiking Distance: 8.3 kilometers (5.2 miles)

Duration: about 3 hours

Elevation Gain: 170 meters (558 feet)

Highest Point: 790 meters (2,592 feet)

Starting in Magome, you can walk along the one-kilometer-long main street, which has charming old houses and small shops. You will also see historical sites like Shimasaki Toson Memorial Museum and old shrines.

Follow the clear signs that guide you across streams and through forests to the Magome Pass. On the trail, you'll discover ancient stone markers, thatched teahouse ruins, traveler’s guardian god and old bridges.

Your destination, Tsumago, is Japan’s first fully preserved post station. Here, you can visit the ruins of a feudal lord’s inn before enjoying a bowl of soba noodles to recharge.

After hiking, you can take a 9-minute bus from Tsumago to Nagiso. Then, transfer to a 1.5-hour train from Nagiso to Matsumoto. (We offer train tickets.) Head to well-planned Matsumoto hotel for check-in.

Note: If you want more challenging hike, we can customize your tour to be longer than 3 hours, with stops at Nojiri and Narai, or a multi-day journey stretching from Magome to Kiso-Hirasawa. Contact us to design a custom itinerary with our many trail routes.

Day 3 Matsumoto - Kamikochi - Takayama | Matsumoto Castle, Kamikochi Hiking (3 Hiking Routes)

Today, you will visit the must-see castle in Matsumoto, then start hiking in Kamikochi. Stay overnight in Takayama.

After breakfast, visit Matsumoto Castle. It is a National Treasure of Japan and a must-visit to experience the architectural style of Japan's Warring States period. Built between 1592 and 1614, its black exterior appears majestic and solemn, earning it the local nickname "Crow Castle." It is unique for sharing, with the famous Himeji Castle, the rare "five-storied, six-leveled keep" structure—appearing five stories from the outside, but having six internal floors.

You can enter castle's main keep and climb its steep wooden stairs, encountering wartime features such as trap doors, armor, and robust construction along the way. At the top, enjoy panoramic views of Matsumoto Castle Park, the city, and surrounding mountains. Stand where feudal lords once surveyed their domains—the peak of power in ancient Japan. (P.S. Please climb carefully.) In spring, the castle becomes a prime spot for cherry blossom viewing, with the park and moat lined with blooming sakura trees.

Next, your journey takes you to Kamikochi, the official gateway to the Japanese Alps and a revered destination for hikers and nature lovers. With distant views of snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and crystal-clear green lakes, it is a true magnet for travelers.

We offer train ticket from Matsumoto Station to Shin-Shimashima Station. (about 30 min) Then, you can transfer to bus from Shin-shimashima Station to Kamikochi. (about 60 min)

Choose between three hiking routes based on your preference.

Route 1: Taisho Pond->Tashiro Pond->Kappa Bridge->Myojin Pond (9.6km, half day)

This route is ideal for people who enjoy deep hiking and have good stamina.

Start at Taisho Pond, a volcanic lake known for its mirror-like reflections, then admire the unique shallow wetlands of Tashiro Pond. Continue on to the iconic Kappa Bridge, a wooden suspension bridge with magnificent views of the Hotaka mountain range. Travelers love to stay here to enjoy the mountains, the drifting clouds, and the emerald river. Finally, a forest path leads you to the sacred Myojin Pond, a peaceful lake embraced by a lush forest and shrine.

Route 2: Taisho Pond->Tashiro Pond->Kappa Bridge (4.1km, 2 hours)

A quick, flat stroll for those short on time.

Route 3: Kappa Bridge->Myojin Pond->Kappa Bridge (5.8km, 3 hours)

A peaceful, uphill walk for a tranquil experience.

After the hiking, take bus from Kamikochi Bus Terminal to Takayama for hotel check-in. (1.5 hours, transfer at Hirayu Onsen)

Note: Kamikochi is closed from mid-November to mid-April.

Day 4 Takayama - Nagoya | Miyagawa Morning Market, Sanmachi Suji District, Takayama Jinya

Spend most of the day exploring Takayama to experience traditional Japanese town.

Start your morning at 300-year-old Miyagawa Morning Market, one of Japan's three great morning markets. Join locals as they begin their day. This traditional market stretches for about 350 meters along the riverside, featuring over 60 stalls. It's hard to attend this kind of traditional Japanese markets as many others gradually disappear. You can leisurely browse local fruits and vegetables, pickles, crafts, and snacks. Feel the warmth and vibrancy!

Next, 7 minutes walk to Sanmachi Suji District, heart of Little Kyoto in Takayama. It is the city's most iconic historic district. Its three ancient streets—Ichinomachi, Ninomachi, and Sannomachi—have preserved the essence of the Edo to Meiji periods. As you stroll, you'll admire buildings that still retain their original charm: black wooden exteriors, lattice windows, and noren curtains hanging under the eaves.

Take your time to wander and savor Hida beef (Self Pay), which melts in your mouth and rivals Kobe. Sake breweries, sweet shops, and more to check. This area isn't crowded. The ordinary people have lived here for generations. With blue sky overhead and black wooden houses below, you'll be gazing at the same timeless scenery as ancient Japanese people.

Then, 4 minutes walk to Takayama Jinya, the only surviving Edo-period magistrate's office in Japan. Established in 1615, this former Tokugawa Shogunate administrative center for Hida integrated offices, storehouses, a courtroom, and courtyards. Get inside, it's fascinating to observe the wooden structures, bamboo torture instruments, and even exposed nails crafted into rabbit patterns.

After that, we offer train ticket back to Nagoya from Takayama (2.5 hours). Make your way to hotel and check in.

Important Travel Tips for Visiting Japan

About Japan Visa:

Get the right visa. Depending on your nationality and the length of your stay, you may need to apply for a visa in advance. You can do this online or at a Japanese embassy or consulate. Many countries are part of Japan’s visa exemption program, allowing their citizens to enter Japan for short stays without a visa for tourism. Always check if your country is on this list before applying for a visa. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our travel experts for more information.

Best Time to Visit Japan:

The best time to visit Japan depends on your interests:
Spring (March to May): Ideal for witnessing the cherry blossoms and enjoying mild weather. Major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima are particularly beautiful as cherry trees bloom spectacularly.
Summer (June to August): Perfect for experiencing vibrant festivals such as Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, Tanabata Matsuri across the country, and enjoying the natural beauty of Hokkaido, which is less humid than the rest of Japan. Note that early summer (June) is the rainy season.
Autumn (September to November): Offers stunning fall foliage, making it a great time for hiking and temple visits. The weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for outdoor activities.
Winter (December to February): The best time for winter sports, especially in regions like Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. Onsens (hot springs) are also a popular attraction during the cold months.

What to Pack:

Bring Cash. Despite advances in digital payment, many smaller vendors, temples, and rural areas operate predominantly with cash. It’s wise to keep some yen on hand at all times.
Universal Travel Adapter. Japan uses 100V with two straight thin pins.
Passport: Ensure it’s valid for at least six months beyond your date of travel.
Visa (if required): Make sure you have the right visa for your travel.
Travel Insurance Information: Always good to have on hand.

Respect Local Customs and Etiquette

Bow when greeting: A slight bow is a common way to say hello, thank you, or sorry.
Be mindful of your noise level: Japanese culture values quietness, especially in public transportation and residential areas.
Follow the rules: Whether it's waiting in line or adhering to signage, following local rules and etiquette is highly valued.
Etiquette in temples and shrines: Wear modest clothing and follow specific customs such as washing hands and mouth before entering a shrine or temple. Photography might be restricted in sacred areas.

Amazing S Curve We Got
Seriously the best month of our gap year. We called it the "banana route" because of the way we traveled from the chaos and charm of Vietnam right into the futurism of Shanghai and then into the refined order of Japan (Nara's deer were everything!). The planning done by the team was flawless. We got to see three totally distinct worlds: the temples of Hanoi, the Great Wall of China, and the shrines of Kyoto. All without worrying about Visas or logistics. We want a huge, eye-opening adventure, this is the one.

Traveling to JapAn Amazing Japanese Trip, Perfectly Crafted by Asia Odyssey Travelan has always been a…
Traveling to Japan has always been a dream for us, and it became an even bigger one when my husband´s siblings decided to join, turning our group into a lively part of 14! With a mix of teenagers and seniors, our interests were quite diverse. What made it even more special was our desire to include Okinawa, the land of our ancestors, and ensure activities catered to everyone in our diverse group. We quickly realized no pre-arranged tour would fit our unique needs.
That’s when a friend recommended Asia Odyssey Travel (AOT), and it was the best decision we made! Not only did they completely customize our entire trip, but they did so at a perfectly reasonable cost. Our travel agent, Abby, was absolutely incredible. She worked tirelessly with us to build out an itinerary, patiently answering all our questions, offering guidance, making changes, and adding new ideas with such care and professionalism. From Disney and Universal for the teens to visits to TeamLab Planets, museums and temples and shopping excursions, ending with a relaxing beach time in Okinawa, Abby worked with us and ensured there was something wonderful for everyone. Even during the trip, she was always available to help and provide support. I truly can’t express how much Abby made a difference in our experience. The entire team at AOT, from the guides to the drivers, was consistently helpful and attentive, ensuring every moment of our journey was smooth and enjoyable. We are so grateful for the wonderful memories created, all thanks to the dedication and expertise of AOT team. We highly recommend them for an exceptional travel experience.

Our Hokkaido Summer Trip Was The Perfect Escape

I’m so glad we chose to do this tour! We were looking for a way to escape the summer heat, and Hokkaido was a dream come true. The air was so fresh and the scenery was just incredible—I swear my photos don’t even do it justice.

The highlight for me was definitely the lavender fields in Furano. They were even more beautiful in person than in all the pictures you see online. Our private guide knew the best spots to get a great view without fighting the crowds. Plus, we got to see all the other rainbow flower fields in Biei which were just as amazing.

The trip was super relaxing because we didn't have to worry about a thing. Our driver was so professional, and it was a huge relief to have a private car just for our family. It made getting between all the different towns so easy. We loved exploring the charming canal in Otaru and getting to eat all the fresh seafood in Sapporo. The food in Hokkaido is seriously on another level!
