How Cold Does It Get? Snowy Stats & Average Temperatures

Winter in Hokkaido runs from late November to early March. It's cold, snowy, and absolutely magical — especially if you love snow-covered scenery, winter sports, and cozy onsen experiences.

The daytime temperature is about -1°C to -6°C. and it can go above 0°C in southern areas like Hakodate. In the evening, the temperature drops to -8°C to -15°C, even colder in inland and eastern regions like Furano or Shiretoko.

The Snow? Well, it snows frequently and heavily, making Hokkaido perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and just about every winter sport with powdery and dry snow.

Weather by Region

Sapporo: Around -1°C to -7°C; lots of snow (perfect for festivals and city walks in the snow)

Furano/Biei: Much colder, often below -10°C at night; popular for skiing and photography

Niseko: Renowned for deep powder snow — ski heaven

Shiretoko: Coastal with ice drift sightings; very cold and wild, often around -10°C

Hakodate: Milder for Hokkaido, highs around 0°C, great for romantic snowy vibes

It's cold, but dry and crisp, not bone-chillingly humid like Tokyo or Osaka. With good winter gear — coat, gloves, boots, hat — it's very walkable and enjoyable. You'll often see clear skies and soft snow falling like confetti.

Where to Go: Snowy Spots You'll Fall in Love With

1. Sapporo – Snow Festival, Winter Lights, and Local Eats

Sapporo is the heart of Hokkaido's winter action.

Every February, the Sapporo Snow Festival transforms Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome into giant outdoor galleries of snow and ice sculptures.

The Sapporo TV Tower gives you a great view over the snowy city, and the Historic Village of Hokkaido offers a glimpse of old Hokkaido under a blanket of snow.

Between sightseeing, grab a bowl of hot miso ramen in the Susukino area, or explore the winter lights in Sapporo Factory and Sapporo White Illumination events.

2. Otaru – A Romantic Fairytale Town for Couples

Just one hour ride from Sapporo, Otaru is a nostalgic port town that truly shines in winter.

The Otaru Canal, lined with old warehouses and glowing gas lamps, is picture-perfect when dusted with snow — it's no wonder this city was chosen as the filming location for the 1995 romantic movie Love Letter. Fans of the film still come here to trace scenes from its wintry setting.

If you're visiting in February, don't miss the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival. when the city streets, canal, and harbor area are lit by thousands of candles and small snow sculptures, creating a magical walking experience at night.

3. Niseko – The Ski Capital of Japan

If you're chasing powder snow, this is it. Niseko is world-famous for its light, dry snow — ideal for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

It has four major resorts: Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri — all connected by shuttle. The ski schools here cater to beginners and experts alike.

But even if you're not into skiing, you can enjoy hot springs with a view of Mt. Yotei (Hokkaido's Mt. Fuji), snowshoeing through white forests, or just relaxing in a mountain resort atmosphere.

4. Hakodate – Snowy Nights and City Lights

In winter, Mt. Hakodate's ropeway takes you to one of Japan's top three night views — even more dramatic with snow-covered rooftops.

Visit the Hakodate Morning Market early for steaming bowls of kaisendon (seafood rice bowls). Then walk through the Motomachi district, home to the Russian Orthodox Church, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church, and Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, all framed by snowy streets.

5. Noboribetsu & Lake Toya – Hot Springs in the Snow

Need a break from the cold? Soak in a steaming onsen while snowflakes fall around you.

Noboribetsu Onsen is famous for its steamy Jigokudani (Hell Valley) — a volcanic landscape you can explore on short walking trails even in winter. Afterward, relax in mineral-rich hot springs at hotels like Dai-ichi Takimotokan.

Just 1 hour away, Lake Toya offers lakeside resorts with open-air baths, and you can take a short hike up Mt. Usu (via ropeway) for panoramic views of the lake and Mt. Showa-Shinzan.

6. Asahikawa – Penguin Parade & Zoo in the Snow

Located in central Hokkaido, Asahikawa is best known in winter for the Asahiyama Zoo.

The highlight? The adorable penguin parade, where dozens of king penguins waddle through the snow right in front of you. It usually takes place twice a day from late December to mid-March, depending on the snow conditions.

After that, don't forget to enjoy a bowl of soy sauce-based ramen in the Asahikawa Ramen Village. It will bring you to warm world.

If you're visiting in February, I suggest to visit the giant snow sculptures along the Ishikari River during the Asahikawa Winter Festival.

Winter Festivals & Fireworks: Hokkaido's Coolest Celebrations

Hokkaido isn't just about snow—it knows how to celebrate it. From giant snow sculptures to candlelit canals, winter festivals here turn icy nights into unforgettable memories.

Sapporo Snow Festival (Early February)

It's Hokkaido's biggest winter event, and one of the Great Four Ice Snow Festivals in the world. Every February, Sapporo becomes a snow kingdom, filled with gigantic snow and ice sculptures, some as high as 15 meters!

You can find these figurative sculptures in three sites in Sapporo:

  1. Walk through Odori Park where fantasy castles, anime characters, and world-famous landmarks are all carved in snow.
  2. Over at Susukino, shimmering ice statues light up the night.
  3. Bring the kids to Tsudome for snow rafting and tubing. It's exciting, fun, and unforgettable—no matter your age.

Otaru Snow Light Path Festival (Early to Mid February)

Few places capture the romance of winter like Otaru. During this festival, the nostalgic canal town turns into a glowing dreamscape.

Thousands of candles flicker along snowy streets and the frozen canal, casting a warm light against the crisp winter air.

If it feels like a movie set, you're not wrong—Otaru was the backdrop for the beloved Japanese film Love Letter. Whether you're strolling hand-in-hand or snapping dreamy photos, it's winter magic you'll want to bottle up.

Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival (Late January to Mid February)

Held by the clear waters of Lake Shikotsu in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, this festival features ice sculptures illuminated in glowing colors at night.

Ice castles. Frozen tunnels. Glittering lights. Set beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Shikotsu, this festival is small but stunning. As night falls, the ice structures glow in rainbow hues, and weekend fireworks make the sky sparkle. Sip hot drinks, explore the icy playground, and then soak in a nearby onsen to warm your bones. Just an hour's drive from Sapporo, it's the perfect winter day trip.

Soak It All In: Hokkaido's Best Winter Onsen Experiences

There's nothing quite like sinking into a steaming hot spring while snowflakes fall all around you — and Hokkaido, blanketed in white, is one of the best places in Japan to do it.

For first-timers, Noboribetsu Onsen is a must. Just an hour from New Chitose Airport, it's famous for its Hell Valley (Jigokudani) and mineral-rich waters that bubble straight from the volcanic earth. Imagine soaking outdoors surrounded by volcanic steam — it's pure bliss.

Closer to Sapporo, Jozankei Onsen is perfect for a quick winter escape. Set in a deep gorge, it combines snowy forest views with stylish ryokan and modern spas.

Lake Toya Onsen adds a romantic twist, with lakeside baths, winter fireworks, and sunset views you'll never forget.

If you're planning to ski, many top resorts like Niseko, Tomamu, and Furano have their own open-air onsen — perfect for après-ski relaxation with mountain views.

Further east, Akan Onsen lets you soak near a frozen crater lake and experience Ainu culture, while Yunokawa Onsen in Hakodate offers a quirky highlight: snow monkeys bathing just steps away from human visitors!

What to Pack for a Hokkaido Winter Trip - Layer Up like a Pro

Hokkaido winters are cold (think -5°C to -15°C), snowy, and super fun—if you pack smart! Here's your essential winter packing checklist to enjoy everything from ski slopes to snow festivals without freezing or fumbling.

  • Base Layer (thermal underwear): Moisture-wicking and snug to keep your body heat in.
  • Middle Layer (fleece or down sweater): Insulating but lightweight—great for layering.
  • Outer Layer (waterproof & windproof jacket and pants): A ski jacket or winter parka is perfect. Go for a snow-proof pair of pants if you're doing outdoor activities.
  • Warm Hat: You lose most heat through your head—keep it covered!
  • Scarf or Neck Gaiter: Wind protection is key, especially on ski lifts or snowy streets.
  • Gloves/Mittens (waterproof): Go insulated and touchscreen-compatible if you can.
  • Wool Socks (several pairs): Bring extras. Cold feet = no fun.
  • Snow Boots: Insulated, waterproof, and anti-slip. Essential for icy paths!
  • Hand & Toe Warmers: Pop them in your gloves or boots for cozy bonus heat.
  • Heat Tech Clothing (like from Uniqlo): Light but surprisingly warm.
  • Snow Goggles or Sunglasses: Snow glare is no joke, especially on ski days.
  • Face Mask or Buff: Helps with both cold and dry air.
  • Swimwear: Yes! For onsen soaking.

Tip: If you forget anything, don't worry—Hokkaido's convenience stores and drugstores are magic. From warm drinks to emergency gloves, they've got you covered.
