Is May a Good Time to Visit Japan? It's One of the Best Months to Visit Japan!

The answer is a resounding "Yes!" In my opinion, May is one of the best months of the year to explore the country.

The Japan in May weather is generally warm and pleasant, with plenty of sunshine. You'll find temperatures hovering between 20-26°C (68-79°F) in most regions.

However, the Japan climate in May varies from north to south. While southern spots like Okinawa are already transitioning to a humid, rainy season by late May, Hokkaido remains cool and crisp.

One thing to keep in mind is that early May is peak season! It's the tail end of the cherry blossom season in the north, and more importantly, it's during the busy Golden Week—a major Japanese holiday in May.

Taking all this into account, I believe mid-May is the absolute sweet spot for a trip this month, and possibly the entire year!

The Japanese weather in May is quite dynamic as the country transitions from the pleasant warmth of spring to the initial humidity of summer.

Throughout the month, temperatures steadily climb. The day-to-night temperature swing can be quite noticeable, especially in the first half of the month and in mountain areas, so you'll want to pack layers.

Precipitation-wise, the weather shifts from sunny and dry to more humid and damp. The chance of rain significantly increases in the latter half of the month compared to the beginning.

Let's break down the Japan weather in May so you know what to expect.

Japan Weather During May 1-10: A Mild and Pleasant Start to the Month

The first ten days of the month are comfortable, with temperatures between 13-23°C (55-73°F). It's perfect sightseeing weather—mostly sunny with a slight chill in the air morning and night.

If you're chasing beautiful, clear skies, Japan in early May is a golden choice!

But be warned: the very beginning of the month (late April to early May) is Golden Week, so be prepared for massive crowds and high prices for everything from flights to hotels.

This is also a fantastic time to see the last of the Japan in May cherry blossom in the Hokkaido region!

Japan Weather During May 1-10 Avg. Temp (℃/℉) Precipitation My Travel Tips
Pleasant, sunny, with a slight day-to-night temperature swing 13-23°C (55-73°F) Minimal rainfall, feels dry and crisp Great for city sightseeing, late cherry blossom viewing in Hokkaido, and joining Golden Week celebrations.

What to wear in Japan in May during this period? I recommend long-sleeved shirts, a thin sweater, and a light jacket to handle the morning and evening chill.

This is truly the best time to visit all month! The Japan temperature in May is delightful, ranging from 16-25°C (67-77℉). It's warm, mostly dry, and sunny. This is my top pick for the best travel window of the entire year.

However, it's a month of contrasts. While most of Japan is in this sweet spot, Okinawa is already heading into its rainy season, and Hokkaido remains cool and dry.

Japan Weather During May 11-20 Avg. Temp (℃/℉) Precipitation My Travel Tips
Overall warm and sunny, but Okinawa begins its rainy season 16-25°C (67-77℉) Generally stable with little rain. Okinawa may see moderate rain The golden period for outdoor activities. Perfect for city walks, hiking, visiting gardens, and beach fun (but be prepared for rain in Okinawa).

For your packing list, you can swap to short sleeves, but a light long-sleeved jacket is still a good idea. Sunscreen becomes a must!

Japan Weather in Late May (May 21-30): Increasing Humidity and Rain

The Japan weather in late May starts to get a bit more humid and rainy, especially in the southern regions.

Okinawa is officially in its humid, rainy season, while Hokkaido remains cool. If you plan to visit the south during this time, you must keep an eye on the weather forecast and build flexibility into your plans!

Japan Weather in Late May Avg. Temp (℃/℉) Precipitation My Travel Tips
Humidity increases, rain is more frequent. Okinawa is officially in the rainy season 18-26°C (64-79°F) The transition to the rainy season begins, bringing more frequent showers and overcast days Always carry an umbrella. Mix indoor and outdoor activities into your itinerary as a backup plan

For your clothing, go for summer wear, but pack a light cardigan to handle the chill from air-conditioned rooms and sudden downpours.

Japan's diverse climate means your destination depends on what you want to experience. Here's a breakdown by region.

Honshu (Kanto/Kansai/Chubu): This is the most pleasant region in the country, with average temperatures around 15-25°C. It's perfect for city sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Hokkaido: The coolest of Japan's main islands, with temperatures around 8-19°C. It's dry and has little rain, making it a perfect escape from the humidity in the south.

Okinawa: Already in its summer phase, with temperatures around 23-28°C. This is the place to be if you're craving sun, sea, and water activities. I'd recommend visiting in early May to avoid the peak rainy season.

Honshu Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji, Wakayama, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa Wisteria viewing, city walks, garden tours, world heritage site pilgrimages

The very tail end of the Sakura season can still be enjoyed in Japan in May!

If you want to catch the last blooms, you need to head north! In early May, Hokkaido and parts of Tohoku are still in full bloom. However, by mid-to-late May, the blossoms have mostly fallen even in the north.

Here is a quick look at the cherry blossom status in Japan in May:

Regions Status in Early May Status in mid-May Status in Late May Where to Catch
Hokkaido Just started to full bloom At their peak and starting to fall Almost gone Maruyama Park & Nakajima Park in Sapporo, Goryokaku Park in Hakodate

The key to dressing for this month is one simple rule: LAYERING! An "onion-style" outfit lets you add or remove layers to handle the temperature changes.

My Go-To Packing List for You:

Type Packing List
Base Layer A simple cotton t-shirt or a long-sleeved shirt made of a breathable material. This is your go-to layer for warmer midday temperatures.
Mid Layer A light cardigan, a thin sweater, or a button-down shirt. Perfect for early mornings, evenings, or when you're in an air-conditioned building.
Outer Layer A light, waterproof jacket or a windbreaker. Keep it in your bag for sudden rain, wind, or when heading to mountain regions.
Bottoms Jeans, casual pants, or a skirt (with leggings for warmth). They are versatile and comfortable for walking.
Shoes Wear your most comfortable walking shoes or sneakers! You'll be doing a lot of walking.

Three Essential Items:

Foldable Umbrella: Especially in Japan in mid may and Japan in late May, you'll want this on hand for unexpected showers.

Backpack: To hold your layers and essentials, freeing up your hands for street food and souvenirs.

Special Tips for Different Destinations:

Hokkaido (Sapporo, Hakodate): Swap out your light jacket for a fleece or a thin down jacket. May in Hokkaido still feels like early spring.

Okinawa (Naha, remote islands): You can dress for summer! Pack shorts, t-shirts, and dresses. But be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and an umbrella, as the sun is strong and rain can come out of nowhere.

Navigating the Crowds & Costs in Japan in Early May, the Golden Week!

When is Golden Week in Japan?

A word of caution: Japan in May coincides with Golden Week, one of Japan's busiest national holidays. It falls from April 29th to May 5th! The entire country is on the move!

Hotels, flights, and even the Shinkansen can be fully booked months in advance, and prices are high. However, the prices aren't as crazy as they are during the cherry blossom season from March and April!

How to Beat the Crowds and Costs in Japan in May?

Sanmachi Suji District
Sanmachi Suji District
Oyama Shrine
Oyama Shrine

Golden Week in early May can be incredibly crowded and expensive, but it's not impossible to manage. The key is to be strategic!

✔ Plan and Book Far in Advance: To secure the best rates and availability, book your flights and accommodation at least 6 to 9 months ahead of your travel dates.

✔ Avoid the Shinkansen: If possible, avoid long-distance travel on peak days like April 29th, May 3rd, May 4th, and May 5th. For shorter trips, consider using local trains or buses.

✔ Consider Lesser-Known Destinations: During Golden Week, major hotspots like Kyoto, Tokyo's Senso-ji Temple, or theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland will be mobbed. Consider lesser-known central Japan.

✔ Focus on Nature: Lace up your boots and discover a hiker's paradise by walking the historic Nakasendo Trail or the ancient paths of Wakayama.

✔ Start Your Day Early: Visit popular landmarks and attractions first thing in the morning, right when they open, to beat the midday rush.

✔ Come in Mid-May: You might find a better balance of great weather and fewer crowds in Japan in mid-May after the holiday has passed.
