Japan Spring Months: March, April and May

When is spring in Japan? The official Japan spring months are March, April and May.

Japan in spring is a truly magical time, as the weather in Japan in spring gets warmer, the cherry blossoms bloom, and the entire country comes alive.

Spring is a comfortable escape from the cold winter without the humidity of summer.

But remember, with Japan's long, stretched-out shape from north to south, spring time in Japan unfolds differently across the country.

In Hokkaido, for example, spring doesn't typically begin until April, with the cherry blossoms at their peak in May.

Japan Spring Months Avg. Temp (Day/Night) How's the Weather in Japan in Spring?
March 13℃ / 5℃ Still chilly, with big temperature swings. Cherry blossoms start blooming in the south.
April 19℃ / 10℃ Mild and is the peak cherry blossom season. Watch for rain and big temperature swings.
May 23℃ / 15℃ Warm and comfortable. Days get sunnier and humidity starts to increase.

Spring Weather in Japan (March): Late Winter, Early Spring, the Cold Hasn't Faded

This is our early spring.

The chill of winter hasn't quite faded, especially in the mornings and evenings when temperatures can drop to around 5°C. But during the day, the sun feels so much stronger, and the average temperature climbs to a pleasant 13°C.

Japan in spring weather starts here, and if you're in the warmer southern regions like Kyushu and Okinawa, you'll start to see the first cherry blossoms.

Spring Weather in Japan (April): Flowers Bloom, but Unpredictable

Tokyo Sakura around Omokage Bridge

This is the peak of Japan springtime!

The cherry blossoms reach full bloom in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, and the weather becomes wonderfully mild. Daytime temperatures average a comfortable 19°C.

However, be prepared for some unpredictable changes.

We often have sudden spring showers and strong winds that can quickly scatter the blossoms—we call this "Hana-chirashi no Ame," or "flower-scattering rain." It's beautiful but a little sad to see the petals fall!

Spring Weather in Japan (May): Refreshing Early Summer, Golden Week Rain is a Must

By May, the spring months in Japan bring a delightful end to the season. The air is clear and the sun is bright, with daytime averages around 23°C. It's one of the most comfortable times of the year for a trip!

Just a heads up, there's a running joke here: it almost always rains during our big "Golden Week" holiday (April 29th to May 5th), so we affectionately call it the "rainy holiday."

Significant Regional Differences

Japan's unique geography means the weather in Japan in spring isn't the same everywhere. Here's what to expect in different regions:

Region Major City Highest Avg. Temp in Japan in Spring Lowest Avg. Temp in Japan in Spring
Hokkaido Sapporo 12℃ 5℃
Tohoku Sendai 16℃ 8℃
Kanto Tokyo 19℃ 12℃
Central Nagoya 20℃ 11℃
Kansai Osaka 21℃ 13℃
Kyushu Fukuoka 20℃ 13℃
Okinawa Naha 25℃ 20℃

Kyushu & Okinawa: Spring in Japan arrives earliest here! Cherry blossoms can open as early as February. By April and May, it's already very warm and humid, feeling like summer, with an average temperature of up to 25°C.

Kanto & Kansai (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto): This region is the one I described above, with mild and gradually warming temperatures. The average is around 20°C, but a light jacket is still a good idea for the evening.

Hokkaido & Tohoku: Japan springtime arrives late here. While the rest of the country is in full bloom, Hokkaido's cherry blossoms don't reach their peak until May. Even then, the weather can be cool, with large temperature swings between the day and night, from 5°C to 12°C.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Japan in Spring? Beat Crowds and Price

Everyone wants to know the secret to the perfect trip, and the truth is, the best time to visit Japan in spring really depends on your travel style. The Japan spring months of March, April, and May each offer a distinct vibe.

Here's a little breakdown to help you find your perfect fit!

Option 1: The Cherry Blossom Frenzy (Early to Mid-April)

This is the big show! If you've always dreamed of seeing those famous cherry blossoms, this is your time.

From the first to third week of April, cities like Tokyo and Kyoto are completely transformed. The weather in Japan in spring is getting so nice, and the entire country is buzzing with energy.

Everyone is out for a classic Japan spring festival—hanami—it's basically one giant party under the trees!

The Cons: It's the most crowded and expensive time of year, so you'll need to book everything way ahead of time.

Option 2: The Local's Secret (April 20th to the 29th)

Sapporo Maruyama Park in Spring

Shhh, this is my personal favorite! This is that sweet spot right after the main cherry blossom craze. The pink petals are gone, but now the whole country is bursting with fresh, vibrant green leaves—it's just as beautiful!

This Japan springtime is so comfortable, the air is just perfect. You get all the lovely Japan in spring weather with none of the overwhelming crowds.

IMPORTANT: You'll miss the most spectacular cherry blossom peak in the main cities on Honshu. If you still want to see blossoms, head north to Hokkaido, where they are just beginning to bloom and will continue into early to mid-May!

Option 3: For an Unbeatable Value (Mid to Late May)

Are you a budget traveler or someone who loves nature more than crowds? Then this is your moment!

By now, the spring months in Japan are almost over, and the main cities are getting ready for summer. The best part? The number of tourists has gone down a ton!

My take: If you head north to Hokkaido, you can even catch the last of the cherry blossoms all to yourself!

☑ Finding the Best View: The best viewing window is typically 3-4 days after the full bloom, with the entire season lasting about 10-14 days.

No matter your schedule, there's a spot in Japan in spring for your cherry blossom adventure!

You can kick off your hunt early with a trip to Okinawa in January. For the first blooms in Honshu, head to the Izu Peninsula in February.

For that iconic, postcard-perfect moment, you'll want to aim for early April in major hubs like Osaka and Kyoto. Don't forget the truly breathtaking backdrop of Mt. Fuji—a must-see!

Due to its warmer climate, Tokyo's cherry blossoms typically bloom in late March, a few days ahead of their Kansai counterparts.

And for one last chance to catch the magic, the season finally wraps up in late April and early May in the northern beauty of Hokkaido.

Finally, the Japan Spring Outfit Checks: What to Wear in Japan in Spring?

Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kyoto

Todaiji Temple, Nara

The weather during Japan in spring can be a little tricky, so the most important rule is to LAYER UP! Days can be warm and sunny, but the mornings and evenings can get chilly, especially with a breeze.

Outfit Ideas for Your Trip:

The key to your perfect Japan spring outfit is comfort, since you'll be doing a lot of walking, but locals also appreciate a polished look.

Layer Outfit for Her Outfit for Him
Outerwear A lightweight trench coat, a classic denim jacket, or a simple cardigan. A lightweight bomber jacket, a blazer, or a windbreaker.
Tops A mix of long-sleeved tops, thin sweaters, and comfortable blouses. Button-down shirts, sweaters, and stylish long-sleeve tees.
Bottoms Versatile items like ankle-length pants, comfortable jeans, and a pleated skirt. Dark jeans, chinos, and comfortable trousers are all great choices.
Footwear Comfortable flats, fashionable sneakers, and boots for March. You'll thank me later for this tip! Comfortable walking shoes or stylish sneakers. Leave the heavy boots at home unless you're visiting in March.
Accessories A portable umbrella, a day bag or backpack to carry your layers and any shopping you do.

What to Pack in Japan in Spring by Month:

March: This month still feels a bit like late winter. Your Japan spring outfit should include a warm jacket or a wool coat. Scarves and a pair of gloves are also great for chilly mornings and nights, especially if you plan to be out for cherry blossom viewing.

April: This is the sweet spot! The weather is comfortable, so you can swap your heavy coat for a lighter jacket, like a stylish trench coat or a denim jacket. Sweaters and long-sleeved shirts are perfect for layering. Be prepared for occasional rain, too.

May: By May, the weather is feeling more like early summer. You can finally wear T-shirts! A light jacket or a cardigan is still a good idea for the evenings. The sun gets stronger, so remember your sunglasses and a hat.
