Start your day with an exciting hike to Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan’s most famous sacred site. The trailhead is a 12km drive from Paro, taking about 30 minutes. From there, you will begin the trek to this world-renowned monastery perched high on a cliff. It is a must-see landmark that offers incredible views and a deep look into Bhutanese spiritual history.
This 9.6 km trek to Tiger's Nest Monastery takes about 5–6 hours. You can optionally hire a horse (self-paid) to reach the halfway point. The trail offers beautiful views of Paro Valley and quiet forests filled with prayer flags. In April, the path is especially scenic with blooming rhododendrons, creating a colorful and peaceful atmosphere for your spiritual walk to the monastery.
Gaze upon Tiger’s Nest (3,120m), the holiest landmark in Bhutan, located 900m above the valley. According to local legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this cliffside on a tigress to meditate in a cave. Its dramatic location and deep religious history make it a truly sacred destination for every visitor exploring the heart of the Himalayas.
Next, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th-century temple built by King Songtsen Gampo. As one of the 108 original shrines meant to subdue a giant witch, it is a foundational site for Bhutanese faith. Known for the Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, this historic temple frequently hosts royal events, providing visitors with a unique look into the kingdom's earliest and most sacred traditions.
Inside the main hall, you will find a national treasure: a Shakyamuni Buddha statue that mirrors Tibet’s famous Jowo. The temple also holds the relic stupa of master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Featuring iron chains from Tangtong Gyalpo and other unique artifacts, the sanctuary preserves the rich history and deep spiritual meaning of Bhutan’s ancient Buddhist traditions for all who visit.
At last, head back to Paro for overnight.
Optional Bhutan Paro Experiences:
1. Bhutan Traditional Hot Stone Bath (1 hour).
2. Lighting butter lamps for blessings at Kyichu Lhakhang (108 lamps).
Kind Reminds:
1. Optimal Timing: Visit from March to May or October to December. Depart early for the best photography lighting, as the monastery falls into shadow by afternoon.
2. Ascent Options: Horses are available for the uphill climb to a designated point, but the final stretch must be hiked. The descent is on foot only.
3. Monastery Etiquette: Phones and bags are prohibited inside; use the entrance storage. Carry cash for butter lamps before storing your belongings.
4. Local Wildlife: You may encounter friendly stray dogs. Please be mindful and provide them with peaceful space as you pass.

Today, we drive 1.5 hours (50km) to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. We will stop at the Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge along the way. Once in Thimphu (2,340m), you will enjoy a full day of sightseeing, including the Buddha Dordenma Statue, National Memorial Chorten, Motithang Takin Preserve, and the historic Tashichho Dzong.
Stop at the Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge to see a unique part of 15th-century history. Built by Thangthong Gyalpo, the structure uses original iron chains and is decorated with colorful prayer flags. You can view the temple from the outside and walk across the bridge, which offers a great way to experience ancient engineering and the scenery of the Paro River.
Next, visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue (Buddha Point), the world’s largest sitting Shakyamuni Buddha. This 51.5-meter gilded landmark houses 125,000 smaller statues and hosts sacred Vajra Dances during local festivals. In addition to its spiritual importance, the site offers a stunning panorama of Thimphu, providing a perfect view of the city’s colorful architecture and the surrounding mountain valley.
As Bhutan’s largest city, Thimphu is unique because it has no traffic lights or railways. Start your visit at the National Memorial Chorten, where you can join locals in a clockwise kora (circumambulation). This traditional practice is a great way to meet residents and learn about their daily lives and the philosophy of happiness that defines the entire country.
Visit the National Memorial Chorten, a famous stupa built to honor the "Father of Modern Bhutan" and symbolize peace. Then, head to the Motithang Takin Preserve to see the national animal. Legend says the Takin was created by the "Divine Madman," Drukpa Kunley. This visit offers a great look at Bhutan's unique wildlife and its rich, mythical history.
Visit the historic Tashichho Dzong, the administrative and religious heart of Bhutan. Located beside the Wang Chu River, it accommodates the Royal offices and the summer residence of the Chief Abbot. This "Fortress of the Glorious Religion" is especially famous for hosting the Thimphu Tshechu, where the courtyard comes alive with traditional masked dances and significant cultural heritage celebrations.
Note: The Dzong is open to tourists from 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM on weekends. You must have a tour guide and pass a security check to enter. If you time it right, see the traditional flag-lowering ceremony.
Finally, enjoy an authentic dinner at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant, founded by the Queen Mother to protect traditional cooking. This unique spot offers a true taste of the local culture and is a great way to experience Bhutanese heritage through its delicious food.
