Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong) History
Tashichho Dzong was founded in 1261 by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa, a religious teacher who was known for his teachings. The monastery was built on a hilltop and was originally called Do-Ngon Dzong, or "Blue Stone Dzong."
In 1641, the monastery was renamed Tashichho Dzong, which means "Fortress of the Glorious Religion." This was done by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a key figure in Bhutanese history. Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal also established all dzongs as both political and religious centers.
Tashichho Dzong has undergone many fires and reconstructions over the years. The most important reconstruction took place in the 1960s, when Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of Bhutan, oversaw the transformation of the dzong into the current seat of government. The king also moved the Bhutanese capital from Punakha to Thimphu at this time. Since then, Thimphu Dzong has served as the office of the king and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo, the head of the Buddhist clergy.

Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong) Architecture
Thimphu Dzong, a hallmark of Bhutan's architecture, rises above Thimphu, encircled by lofty walls. A welcoming rose garden sets a serene tone at its entrance.
This fortress-like dzong spans across two levels, with three-storey corner towers and a central five-storey watchtower, known as the famous utse.

How to Visit Tashichho Dzong
Tashichho Dzong, being the government's office of Bhutan, is only open for visits after 5:00 PM on weekdays. However, if you plan to visit on weekends, you will have ample time to explore as the opening hours are from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Tashichho Dzong has two different entrances, and you will enter through the first entrance for the visit. There is a beautiful rose garden at the entrance, and upon arrival, you will go through a security check before being guided by a tour guide. Please remember not to wear revealing clothing and note that cameras are not allowed inside.

From Thimphu
Thimphu Dzong is located about 2 kilometers from the city center of Thimphu, and you can leisurely walk there. Taxis are also available and can quickly transport you to the dzong. Buses are another option, but it's important to note that they make frequent stops at various bus stations along the way.
From Paro
Many tourists choose to take a flight to Paro and then proceed directly to Thimphu, which takes approximately a 2-hour car journey. Uber is not available here, and the most recommended option is still to travel with a tour group.
