Day 1 Paro, Bhutan Arrival | Airport Pick-up & Hotel Check-in, Paro Airport Birds Eye View Point, Bhutan Traditional Attire Experience
Altitude: 2,270m I Distance: 8km, about 0.5 hours' drive

Tashi Delek! Welcome to Bhutan, the "Last Shangri-La" nestled in the pristine Himalayas. Breathe in the fresh air of this joyful nation, where lush forests cover 71% of the landscape. Your journey begins at Paro International Airport, where our local staff will warmly greet you.

Paro (2,270m) serves as Bhutan’s primary gateway and home to the legendary Tiger’s Nest, a sanctuary of profound spirituality. Travelers visiting in March can witness the Paro Tshechu, a vibrant festival honoring Guru Rinpoche. With its blend of sacred rituals, masked dances, and stunning cliffside views, Paro offers an unforgettable immersion into Bhutan’s living heritage and nature.

Pause at the Paro Airport View Point for a breathtaking first look at the valley’s landmarks, from Rinpung Dzong to the emerald Paro Chu River. After learning about the unique challenges of this alpine airstrip from your guide, enjoy a smooth transfer to your hotel. Take this time to unwind, acclimate, and embrace the peaceful pace of Bhutan.

You will enjoy the following complimentary experiences from the AOT:

1.Bhutan National Dress Experience: Try Bhutan Traditional Attire, Gho for Men & Kira for Women. The Gho and Kira are typically made from woven fabrics with intricate patterns and designs, reflecting the country's textile heritage.

2.A Bottle of Bhutan Red Rice Wine: Try Bhutan red rice wine, a traditional alcoholic beverage made by fermenting red rice, a staple crop in Bhutan. It has a lower alcohol content and is typically sweeter than beer.

If your group arrives by noon, enjoy an optional visit to Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum. Please note that Paro Dzong requires a guided escort, operating from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and 10 AM to 4 PM on weekends. After clearing security checks, you will begin your immersion into Bhutanese culture at these sacred sites. (Tickets are self-paid).

Free Time Ideas:

1. Visit Paro Local Market or Street: Why not dress in Bhutan's National attire to visit a local market or Paro's main street? Check what Bhutanese eat and what ingredients are used in Bhutan Dishes. Colorful Chili peppers, dry cheese, potatoes, apples...

2. Try Bhutan National Sport (self-pay for the fee): Archery is the favorite pastime for Bhutanese. It has a history of over 2,000 years and was declared Bhutan's National Sport in 1971. Targets at traditional Bhutanese tournaments are placed at both ends of a 140m range (Olympic distance is 70m). Enjoy your time by holding a bow and arrow.

Day 2 Paro Tour | Tiger's Nest Monastery Hiking, Kyichu Lhakhang
Altitude: 2,270-3,120m I Distance: 30km, about 1.5 hours' drive

This morning, you will get ready to start the exciting Hiking Tour to Tiger's Nest, the landmark of Bhutan and the most famous holy monastery in the country. It is about a 12km drive (over 0.5 hour) from Paro City to the start point of the Tiger's Nest hike route.

The Tiger’s Nest hike is a 9.6 km journey taking 5–6 hours. You may opt for a horse ride (Optional; Self-payment required) to the halfway cafeteria for lunch and iconic views. April visitors will enjoy blooming rhododendrons and forests draped in prayer flags. This sacred ascent offers stunning Paro Valley panoramas, making it a highlight of any Bhutanese spiritual adventure.

Opposite Tiger’s Nest (3,120m), admire Bhutan’s most iconic landmark perched 900m above the valley. Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche arriving on a flying tigress in the 8th century. Though rebuilt in 2005, the 1692 structure remains the nation's holiest pilgrimage site. Explore this architectural marvel to witness the profound spirituality and heritage revered by Buddhists across the globe.

After the Tiger's Nest Hike, it is time to visit Kyichu Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of the Thousand-armed and Thousand-eyed Avalokiteshvara. It is one of the 108 Buddhist temples built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century (around 659 AD), and it is believed to have been constructed to subdue the left leg of the Tibetan witch. Kyichu Lhakhang is also one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist temples in Bhutan and serves as a venue for important celebrations of the Bhutanese royal family.

The main hall houses a national treasure: a revered statue of the eight-year-old Shakyamuni Buddha, often compared to Tibet’s Jowo. You will also find the relic stupa of master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and an ancient iron chain forged by Tangtong Gyalpo, the legendary "Iron Bridge Builder." These artifacts reflect the immense spiritual and historical depth of this sacred site.

At last, head back to Paro for overnight.

Optional Bhutan Paro Experiences:

1. Bhutan Traditional Hot Stone Bath (1 hour).

2. Lighting butter lamps for blessings at Kyichu Lhakhang (108 lamps).

Kind Reminds:

1. The best time to visit Tiger's Nest is from March to May and from October to December. After noon, the monastery will be hidden in the shadow of the cliffs, so it's recommended to depart early if you want to capture good photos.

2. Tiger's Nest offers horse riding services to go uphill, but the horse ride is only available up to a designated point. From there, you still need to hike to reach the monastery. When descending, you must walk the entire way as horse riding services are not provided.

3. Mobile phones and backpacks are not allowed inside Tiger's Nest Monastery. Personal belongings can be stored at the entrance. If you wish to light butter lamps, make sure to have some cash ready before storing your belongings.

4. Along the way, you may encounter stray dogs. Please be mindful, give them space, and avoid disturbing them.

Day 3 Paro to Thimphu Tour | Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, Buddha Point, National Memorial Chorten, Takin Preserve, Thimphu Dzong
Altitude: 2,270-2,340m I Distance: 50km, about 1.5 hours' drive

Today, we will head to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, which is about 50km away and takes about 1.5 hours to reach. On the way, we will make a stop at Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge for a visit. Once in Thimphu (altitude 2,340m), you will have a full day of sightseeing. You can explore its rich cultural heritage such as the Buddha Dordenma Statue, National Memorial Chorten, Motithang Takin Preserve, and Tashichho Dzong.

Traveling from Paro to Thimphu, stop at the historic Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge spanning the Paro River. Engineered by the legendary Thangthong Gyalpo, this unique 15th-century structure invites you to walk across iron chains adorned with vibrant prayer flags. While the temple is viewed from the outside, the bridge offers a rare, hands-on encounter with ancient engineering and sacred Bhutanese tradition in a stunning riverside setting.

Then, visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue (Buddha Point), the world’s largest sitting Shakyamuni statue and a golden landmark of Thimphu. This 51.5-meter masterpiece houses 125,000 smaller Buddhas and hosts sacred Vajra Dances during festivals. Beyond its spiritual power, the site offers a magnificent panorama of Thimphu Valley, providing a bird’s-eye view of the city’s unique colorful architecture and the serene landscapes that define Bhutan’s vibrant capital.

As the largest city in Bhutan, Thimphu lacks traffic lights and a railway system. When you enter the city, you can visit the National Memorial Chorten and experience it as the locals do. It is customary to follow the footsteps of the Bhutanese people and perform a clockwise kora (circumambulation) around the Chorten while offering prayers. This will provide you with numerous opportunities to engage with the locals and learn about their daily lives, as well as their philosophy on happiness.

Explore the National Memorial Chorten, Thimphu's iconic stupa dedicated to modern Bhutan’s founder. It remains a daily site of devotion and peace. Nearby, the Motithang Takin Preserve showcases the country’s unique national animal. Linked to the eccentric miracles of Drukpa Kunley, the Takin’s bizarre appearance adds a layer of mythical charm to your tour, perfectly complementing the city’s vibrant cultural landmarks.

Explore Tashichho Dzong, the "Fortress of the Glorious Religion" and Bhutan’s seat of government. Located by the Wang Chu River, this grand structure houses the King’s offices and lush gardens. If visiting in autumn, witness the Thimphu Tshechu Festival, where the northern courtyard transforms into a stage for sacred masked dances. It remains a majestic symbol of Bhutan’s political and spiritual harmony since 1952.

Note: The tourist opening hours of Thimphu Dzong are from 5 PM to 6:30PM on weekdays and from 10 AM to 4 PM on weekends. It is required to have a tour guide accompany you for a visit to the Dzongs. Before entering for a visit, security checks are conducted. If you visit there at the right time (lucky enough), you may have the chance to see the flag descending ceremony.

Finally, it's time for dinner. You can enjoy a traditional meal at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant. Opened as a passion project to promote Bhutanese culinary arts (traditional Bhutan dishes), the restaurant was established by the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. After dinner, you will spend the night in Thimphu and have a restful sleep.

Optional Bhutan Thimphu Experiences:

1. Folk Heritage Museum: If time permit, you can visit Folk Heritage Museum, a captivating window into Bhutan's rural past & established by the Queen Mother of Bhutan.

2. Simply Bhutan Museum: If time permit, you can visit Simply Bhutan Museum to explore more about Bhutan culture.

3. Bhutan Stamp Printing: Fully functional stamp printed with a self-portrait (Bhutan Post Office: Weekdays: 9AM - 5PM; Saturdays: 9 AM - 1 PM; Closed on Sundays).

Day 4 Thimphu - Haa - Paro | Mini Tiger's Nest, Chele La Pass (3,998m), Lhakhang Karpo, Lhakhang Nagpo
Altitude: 2,340-2,270m I Distance: 170km, about 5 hours' drive

After breakfast, drive to Haa (115 km, 3.5 h), the "Hidden-land Rice Valley" and the westernmost Dzong of Bhutan. Unlike many popular tourist destinations in Bhutan, Haa Valley remains delightfully untouched, preserving its serene atmosphere and traditional way of life. It is highly recommended for nature enthusiasts and trekkers seeking a beautiful destination. Here, you won't encounter hordes of crowds but rather the gentle whispers of the wind and the rhythmic clang of prayer flags.

First, begin your journey at Dzongdrakha Monastery, often called the "Mini Tiger’s Nest." This 16th-century cliffside complex offers stunning views of Bondey Valley and is where Guru Rinpoche allegedly stayed before reaching Taktsang. Explore the sacred meditation cave of its founder and enjoy the unique vantage point for watching planes arrive at Paro Airport. It is a serene, significant prelude to Bhutan’s most famous landmark.

Then, ascend to Chele La Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable road at 3,998 meters. This vantage point offers breathtaking panoramas, including the majestic Jomolhari (7,326m) on clear days. Observe locals offering prayers amidst vibrant flags or enjoy a scenic coffee break. Descending toward Haa Valley, view the historic Haa Dzong, now an administrative center and headquarters for IMTRAT, showcasing a unique blend of military and architectural history.

Arriving in Haa Valley, you’ll discover Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo. Legend holds that Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo built these White and Black Temples in a single day as part of his 108 sacred structures. Guided by two symbolic doves released from his consciousness, the King chose these precise locations to safeguard the valley.

First, visit Lhakhang Karpo, or the White Temple, nestled beneath three majestic peaks in Haa Valley. Home to sacred white pigeons, this spiritual site hosts vibrant religious performances during the Haa Summer Festival in July. Here, you can observe unique Buddhist ritual objects, such as traditional thigh-bone trumpets, offering a profound glimpse into the ancient traditions and cultural depth of this serene mountain sanctuary.

Next, continue your trip to Lhakhang Nagpo, the Black Temple, which can be reached by a 10-minute walk from north of the White Temple. This location was selected by black pigeons. Lhakhang Nagpo, built on a lake, derives its name from the color black and is surrounded by serene greenery and dense forests.

After a stroll around Haa town, head back to Paro for overnight.
