Day 1 Paro, Bhutan Arrival | Airport Pick-up & Hotel Check-in, Paro Airport Birds Eye View Point, Bhutan Traditional Attire Experience
Altitude: 2,270m I Distance: 8km, about 0.5 hours' drive

Tashi Delek! Welcome to Bhutan, the "Last Shangri-La" nestled in the pristine Himalayas. Enjoy the fresh air of this joyful nation, where lush forests cover 71% of the land. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, our local team will warmly greet you.

Paro serves as Bhutan’s primary gateway and home to the legendary Tiger’s Nest, a sanctuary of profound spirituality. Visitors in March can experience the Paro Tshechu, a vibrant festival honoring Guru Rinpoche. With its sacred rituals, masked dances, and stunning cliffside views, Paro offers an unforgettable immersion into Bhutan’s heritage.

Stop at the Paro Airport View Point for a stunning first look at the valley, featuring Rinpung Dzong and the emerald Paro Chu River. After learning about the unique challenges of this alpine airstrip, enjoy a smooth transfer to your hotel. Unwind, acclimate, and fully embrace the peaceful pace of Bhutan.

You will enjoy the following complimentary experiences from the AOT:

1. Bhutan National Dress Experience: Try Bhutan Traditional Attire, Gho for Men & Kira for Women. The Gho and Kira are typically made from woven fabrics with intricate patterns and designs, reflecting the country's textile heritage.

2. A Bottle of Bhutan Red Rice Wine: Try Bhutan red rice wine, a traditional alcoholic beverage made by fermenting red rice, a staple crop in Bhutan. It has a lower alcohol content and is typically sweeter than beer.

If your group arrives by noon, enjoy an optional visit to Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum. Please note that Paro Dzong requires a guided escort, operating from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and 10 AM to 4 PM on weekends. After clearing security, begin your cultural immersion at these sacred sites. Please be aware that entry tickets are self-paid.

Free Time Ideas:

1. Visit Paro Local Market or Street: Explore the Paro Local Market or main street dressed in traditional Bhutanese attire. Discover local ingredients like vibrant chili peppers, dried cheese, and fresh apples.

2. Try Bhutan National Sport (self-pay for the fee): Try your hand at archery, Bhutan's national sport since 1971. Traditionally played at a challenging 140m distance, it's a favorite local hobby. Grab a bow and arrow to experience this ancient Bhutanese tradition firsthand.

Feel free to contact your guide in advance for more travel advice and tips tailored to your interests.

Arrival Ideas:

Accessing Bhutan is by air or land. Paro International Airport connects to major hubs like Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Gaya, Guwahati, Dhaka, Bangkok, Kathmandu, and Changi via Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines. Alternatively, enter by road through Phuentsholing or Gelephu from India. Seasonal charter flights from Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur provide additional convenient gateways.

Kind Reminds:

1. You can contact us to book your flight to Paro and land directly in Bhutan.

2. Visitors of all nationalities, except those from India (require a permit), require an E-visa (40USD/pax) before entering Bhutan. All nationalities are welcome to visit Bhutan, and there are no specific restrictions on granting visas to enter the country.

3. Visitors from India are able to apply for a permit but are required to hold an Indian passport or an Indian voter ID card.

4. Visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives also require a visa, which can be applied for and approved in advance of travel or upon arrival in Bhutan.

Day 2 Paro Tour | Tiger's Nest Monastery Hiking, Kyichu Lhakhang
Altitude: 2,270-3,120m I Distance: 30km, about 1.5 hours' drive

This morning, you will get ready to start the exciting Hiking Tour to Tiger's Nest, the landmark of Bhutan and the most famous holy monastery in the country. It is about a 12km drive (over 0.5 hour) from Paro City to the start point of the Tiger's Nest hike route.

The 9.6 km hike to Tiger’s Nest is a spiritual journey taking roughly 5–6 hours. For a more relaxed pace, optional horse rides are available to the halfway point. Spring travelers will witness vivid rhododendrons and sacred prayer flags. Offering unmatched Paro Valley panoramas, this legendary trek stands as the ultimate highlight of any Bhutanese itinerary.

Then, facing the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery, you’ll behold Bhutan’s most iconic landmark perched 900m above the Paro Valley. Founded where Guru Rinpoche allegedly meditated in the 8th century after arriving on a flying tigress, this sacred site was officially built in 1692. Despite a 1998 fire, the monastery was meticulously restored by 2005. You can hike inside to explore its holy chambers where photography is strictly prohibited.

Following your hike, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo. This sacred site houses a national treasure: a Shakyamuni Buddha statue from the same era as Lhasa's Jowo. You’ll also find the relic stupa of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and an iron chain forged by the legendary "Iron Bridge" builder, Tangtong Gyalpo, amidst precious historical artifacts.

At last, head back to Paro for overnight.

Optional Bhutan Paro Experiences:

1. Bhutan Traditional Hot Stone Bath (1 hour).

2. Lighting butter lamps for blessings at Kyichu Lhakhang (108 lamps).

Kind Reminds:

1. The ideal time to visit Tiger's Nest is from March to May or October to December. Depart early for the best lighting and photography, as the monastery falls into cliffside shadows after noon.

2. Optional horse riding is available for the uphill climb, but only to a specific point; the final stretch to the monastery must be hiked. On the return journey, you must walk the entire way down.

3. Backpacks and mobile phones are prohibited inside Tiger's Nest. Please store your belongings at the entrance. If you plan to light butter lamps, keep some cash with you before storing your items.

4. Along the way, you may encounter stray dogs. Please be mindful, give them space, and avoid disturbing them.

Day 3 Paro to Thimphu Tour | Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, Buddha Point, National Memorial Chorten, Takin Preserve, Thimphu Dzong
Altitude: 2,270-2,300m I Distance: 50km, about 1.5 hours' drive

Today, drive 50km (1.5 hours) to Thimphu (2,340m).

Don't miss the Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, a stunning riverside landmark between Paro and Thimphu. Walk across the original iron chains forged by the saint Thangthong Gyalpo in the 1400s. With its vibrant prayer flags and views of the historic temple, this stop offers a perfect blend of Bhutanese engineering and sacred tradition.

Then, visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue (Buddha Point), standing 51.5 meters tall, is the world’s largest sitting Shakyamuni statue. This gilded bronze structure contains a staggering 125,000 interior Buddhas. From its hilltop position, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the city’s iconic red and green roofs. It is a modern masterpiece completed in 2015 that serves as a peaceful sentinel over the entire Thimphu Valley.

As Bhutan’s largest city, Thimphu uniquely lacks traffic lights and railways. Immerse yourself in local life at the National Memorial Chorten, where you can perform a clockwise kora alongside residents. This traditional circumambulation offers a window into Bhutanese philosophy and daily prayers, providing a meaningful opportunity to engage with the community and understand their perspective on happiness.

The National Memorial Chorten, Thimphu's most visited landmark, was built in 1974 to honor the "Father of Modern Bhutan." This Tibetan-style stupa features intricate sculptures promoting global peace. Afterward, explore the Motithang Takin Preserve to encounter Bhutan’s national animal. Legend says the "Divine Madman," Drukpa Kunley, miraculously created this unique creature from a goat’s head and cow’s body, making it a must-see for nature enthusiasts.

Visit Tashichho Dzong, the majestic "Fortress of the Glorious Religion" and Bhutan’s administrative and religious heart. Located by the Wang Chu River, it houses the King’s offices and the Je Khenpo’s summer residence. Explore its grand architecture and manicured gardens, or visit the northern monastic quarter, home to the vibrant Thimphu Tshechu festival. This massive landmark perfectly embodies the nation's integrated spiritual and political power.

Note: Thimphu Dzong is open weekdays (5:00 PM–6:30 PM) and weekends (10:00 AM–4:00 PM). A licensed guide and security check are required for entry. If timed correctly, you may witness the ceremonial lowering of the flag, adding a patriotic touch to your fortress visit.

Conclude your day at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant, a culinary initiative founded by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. Here, you’ll enjoy authentic Bhutanese dishes designed to preserve the nation's rich food heritage. Afterward, return to your hotel for a peaceful night’s rest in Thimphu, perfectly capping off your day of cultural exploration.

Optional Bhutan Thimphu Experiences:

  • Folk Heritage Museum: If time permit, you can visit Folk Heritage Museum, a captivating window into Bhutan's rural past & established by the Queen Mother of Bhutan.
  • Simply Bhutan Museum: If time permit, you can visit Simply Bhutan Museum to explore more about Bhutan culture.

Day 4 Thimphu to Punakha Tour | Dochula Pass (3,120m), Chimi Lhakhang, Punakha Dzong
Altitude: 2,300-1,350m I Distance: 74km, about 2.5 hours' drive

Travel from Thimphu to Punakha via the scenic Dochula Pass on a 2.5-hour journey through shifting landscapes. Ascending from Thimphu’s cool altitude (2,300m) to the majestic heights of the pass (3,120m), you will then descend into the lush, warm Punakha Valley (1,330m). This drive offers a visual spectacle as the environment transforms from high-mountain peaks to verdant subtropical valleys.

Stop at Dochula Pass, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful mountain passes. On clear days, enjoy breathtaking Himalayan views, including Mt. Gangkar Puensum (7,570m), perhaps with coffee at the local cafe. At the summit, admire the 108 memorial chortens and fluttering prayer flags. These shrines, the Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang, honor fallen soldiers and serve as a profound offering for global peace and tranquility.

Continue toward Punakha with a hike to Chimi Lhakhang, a fascinating "culture shock" site. Walking through rice paddies and villages, you’ll see phallus symbols everywhere, honoring the "Divine Madman" Drukpa Kunley, who used his "magic thunderbolt" to defeat a demon. As a sanctuary of fertility, the temple attracts couples seeking blessings for children. If you're lucky, you’ll witness monks blessing pilgrims with a wooden phallus, a traditional Bhutanese practice to ward off evil.

After that, drive to Punakha city, Bhutan’s former capital situated at the scenic confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. The magnificent Punakha Dzong dominates the landscape, serving as the winter residence for the Je Khenpo and 1,000 monks. This "most beautiful dzong" has hosted royal coronations and weddings. Visit in April to see the stunning purple jacaranda blossoms or during the Punakha Tshechu Festival to witness vibrant masked dances and locals in traditional Gho and Kira.

Cross the Bazam Bridge to explore Punakha Dzong, a masterpiece built without nails or written plans. This unique fortress features three courtyards and a six-story utse (central tower) housing sacred artifacts. Discover the Victory Chorten, royal halls, and the final resting place of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Finally, visit the hundred-pillar assembly hall, where exceptional murals vividly depict the life of Buddha amidst this stunning stone and timber architecture.

Note: The tourist opening hours of Punakha Dzong are from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and from 10 AM to 4 PM on weekends. It is required to have a tour guide accompany you for a visit to the Dzongs. Before entering for a visit, security checks are conducted.

Overnight in Punakha and get ready for your next day's trip.

Day 5 Punakha to Paro Tour | Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten Hike, Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendup Lhakhang Nunnery
Altitude: 1,350- 2,270m I Distance: 110km, about 3.5 hours' drive

This morning, you will walk alongside terraced rice paddies and follow a trail to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (hike 1 hour or less). Along the way, you may encounter farmers working in the fields, either manually or with the help of an ox and plow.

Built in 1990 by the Queen Mother, the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (Stupa) was crafted to ward off evil and promote global peace. This unique pagoda-style stupa took nine years to complete and is dedicated to Bhutan’s protective deities. After admiring the intricate sculptures inside, climb to the roof for breathtaking views of Punakha’s valley, where verdant rice paddies famously transform into shimmering golden fields during the autumn harvest.

Then, make your way back to Paro with a visit to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, perched above the Punakha and Wangduephodrang valleys. This peaceful complex, home to 120 nuns, offers a unique look into monastic life and traditional crafts like Thangka painting. Inside the temple, marvel at the 14-foot bronze Avalokiteshvara, the country's largest statue of its kind, alongside images of Guru Rinpoche and the 21 Taras, all surrounded by a serene pine forest setting.

After that, drive back to Paro (110km, about 3.5h) and overnight in Paro.

1. Recommended Length of Stay for Bhutan Group Tour: For your group tour in Bhutan, you will stay in 3-star hotels. Typically, you’ll spend 1–2 nights in Paro, 1–2 nights in Thimphu, 1–2 nights in Punakha, with the possibility of 1 night in Trongsa and 2 nights in Bumthang. Accommodations will be in twin‑bed standard rooms.

2. Excellent Locations & Comfort: All our selected 3-star hotels are in prime locations, usually near the main attractions or Dzongs. Each hotel provides high-quality service, organic food, and clean, comfortable rooms, ensuring a pleasant and comfortable stay at every destination.

3. Single Room Supplement: By default, the tour package assumes two people sharing a room. However, if you require a single room, an additional single room supplement will be charged. This supplement ensures that you have a private room for your stay, providing added comfort and privacy.

4. Check-In and Check-Out Times: Check-in time for the hotels is generally after 14:00 (2:00 PM), allowing you to settle in and freshen up before starting your Bhutanese adventure. On the day of departure, please check out before 12:00 noon to ensure a smooth transition and allow time for the hotel staff to prepare for incoming guests.
