Shanghai Tibet Tours FAQs - Plan Your Shanghai Tibet Tours Worry-Free
  • 1. Should I worry about altitude sickness when travelling in Lhasa (Tibet)?

Due to its high altitude of over 3,650 meters, high altitude sickness can be a concern for travelers visiting Lhasa. However, don't worry - most travelers are able to adjust to the altitude and experience Lhasa without any issues.

Here are some tips to help prevent and manage altitude sickness during your Lhasa tour:

    (1) Acclimatize slowly: It's important to acclimatize gradually to the high altitude by spending a few days in Lhasa before undertaking any strenuous activities. This will give your body time to adjust to the thinner air and lower oxygen levels.

    (2) Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other fluids to avoid dehydration, which can worsen altitude sickness symptoms.

    (3) Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine: These substances can dehydrate you and make it more difficult for your body to acclimatize to the high altitude.

    (4) Eat light and healthy meals: Eat light, nutritious meals to help your body adjust to the high altitude and avoid heavy or greasy foods that can make you feel more sluggish.

    (5) Take medication: Medications such as acetazolamide (Diamox) can help prevent altitude sickness by increasing ventilation and reducing fluid buildup in the lungs. However, it's important to consult with a doctor before taking any medication for altitude sickness.

    (6) Rest: Take breaks and rest often during your Lhasa tour to give your body time to adjust and avoid overexertion.

By Air: There are flights from Shanghai to Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. But please pay attention that the direct flight usually will make a brief stop (around 1.5 hour) via Chengdu or Xi’an and keep flying to Lhasa, about 7 hours and operates daily.

By Train: Another option is to take the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the highest railway in the world. The train journey from Shanghai to Lhasa takes around 46 hours and offers stunning views of the Tibetan plateau. However, it's important to note that the high altitude can cause altitude sickness, so it's recommended to acclimatize to the altitude by taking the train.

Shanghai to Xining or Xian by Air and then Train to Tibet:

If you want to save time,  we highly recommend traveling from Shanghai to Xining by flight first and then taking the Xining to Lhasa train via the famous Qinghai Tibet railway. As Xining is the starting point of the Qinghai Tibet railway, this approach allows you to enjoy the best part of the Tibet train journey in a much shorter time, which takes only 24 hours, with a comparison of a 46-hour journey from Beijing to Lhasa. Additionally, you'll have more train options to choose from in Xining, as there is only one train between Shanghai and Lhasa.

If you want to save time and visit more cities, we recommend choosing Xian as connecting point.  Compared with Shanghai Lhasa train 47 hrs, the train from Xian which can short to 31hrs to get to Lhasa. Start from Shanghai, where you'll be able to witness the modernization of China firsthand. And then discover the wonders of ancient China- the Terracotta Army in Xian. Next, enjoy a train journey of a lifetime to Tibet.
