We visit Lhasa for its rich Tibetan culture, but skip Everest Base Camp for an easier trip. It is a great choice for first-time visitors. You will also visit the famous Golden Triangle cities and see giant pandas."

Day 2 Beijing City Tour | Tian’anmen Square, Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, Summer Palace
A full-day Beijing tour with Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, and Summer Palace. (B+L)

Today you will spend the whole day exploring the ancient citadel of Beijing through China's famous landmarks, imperial grandeur, and royal gardens.

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your hotel and head to Tiananmen Square, the world's largest public square and symbol of China. It has witnessed many major events in China's history over the past decades, and from here you can take great photos of Tiananmen Gate, seen daily on CCTV News.

Walking across the square, you will visit the mighty and splendid Forbidden City, the world's largest palace complex and former home of 24 Chinese emperors. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Forbidden City has about 500 years of history, serving as the political and ritual center of China during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. With over 8,700 rooms, it is not only China's largest and best-preserved collection of ancient buildings, but also a city within a city, like the Vatican in Rome. Enter through the Meridian Gate and visit along the central axis to ensure you see all the highlights. Admire the brilliant architecture and numerous ancient treasures while listening to your guide share stories of the emperors who once lived here.

In the afternoon, drive to the Summer Palace, the "Museum of Royal Gardens," once a summer retreat for royal families. The grounds, temples, gardens, pavilions, lakes, bridges, gate-towers, and corridors are marvels of landscape design. Take a leisurely stroll to appreciate the imperial architecture, hilltop views, and beautiful lakes, which offer a pastoral escape into the landscapes of traditional Chinese painting.

(Travel Note: Beijing's Forbidden City is closed on Mondays. On those days, you will instead visit the Temple of Heaven or Prince Gong's Mansion.)

Take a visit to Mutianyu Great Wall by cable car (round-trip), have a glimpse of Bird’s Nest & Water Cube on the way back downtown. (B+L)

This morning, you will head northwest of Beijing (about 1.5 - 2 hours’ drive, 73km) to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. The Great Wall boasts a history of over 2,000 years and stretches more than 3,000 miles across several provinces of northern China, making it one of the most impressive ancient masterpieces on the planet. Mutianyu Great Wall is connecting with the Jiankou Great Wall in the west and the Gubeikou Great Wall in the east. Mutianyu is the longest and best fully-restored great wall with fewer tourists and is also famed for its 23 Ming-era watchtowers and stunning views.

Take the cable car up to the 14th watchtower and then enjoy some memorable hiking time on the wall while visiting its western route. With the green pines and cypresses covering the surrounding area, and the winding wall standing majestically on the vast land, you will capture the most stunning natural scenery in this section. Challenge yourselves while climbing up to the 20th watchtower where you could fulfill your Great Wall dream. Cherish the chance and take photos as many as you like!

After the once-in-lifetime experience, head back to downtown Beijing and have the chance to take photos with the exterior of Bird's Nest (Beijing National Stadium) and Water Cube (Beijing National Aquatics Center). They were both designed for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and used for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

It’s great fun to watch them playing, eating, climbing, sleeping… If you come in autumn, you will have the chance to see the pink newborn giant panda cubs in the Sunshine Nursery House and the Moonlight Nursery House. Besides giant pandas, you can also meet the cute red pandas walking by your side in the Red Panda Playgrounds. Then follow your guide to discover more about panda’s secrets through the Panda Museum. (Note: Pandas like cool weather, so we advise you to arrive there early as pandas are more active in the morning. During the day of high temperatures, pandas would prefer to stay inside and sleep.)

In the afternoon, drive to visit the mysterious Sanxingdui Site Museum (about 1 hour’s drive, 50km). Unearthed in 1929, Sanxingdui keeps making archaeologists excited by its brilliant relics unearthed from the ancient capital 3,000-5,000 years ago. Sleep for thousands of years, wake up, and shock the world. In the Bronze Pavilion, you can have close contact with the Bronze Sacred Tree (3.96m, a treasure of the museum, archaeologists took 10 years to recover it), the Bronze Standing Figure (2.6m, the only complete figure of its size and kind), Vertical-eyed Bronze Mask (the protruding eyes are considered as the symbol of 'Can Cong', the first leader of Ancient Shu), Sun-shaped Bronze (looks like a car steering wheel)... Walking into the mysterious Comprehensive Pavilion, marvel at The Gold Scepter (the gold stick of the King of Ancient Shu Kingdom), Ceramic Utensil with Three Legs (Three-legged Cooking Pottery, local people called it hotpot), Jade Zhang, Gold Mask… With the Bronze, jade, and gold products shown from the Sanxingdui Site, you can imagine the brilliant Sanxingdui Civilization and the existence of the ancient Shu Kingdom that pushes the history of the Sichuan region back for over 2,000 years. After Sanxingdui visiting, drive back to Chengdu downtown.

After that, return to Chengdu downtown for an relaxing stroll at Jinli Old Street. With a history over 1,800 years, it showcases the profound cultures of Ancient Shu Kingdom. Take a nice walk on the traditional stone-paved street full of delicious local snacks, delicate artifacts, interesting folk shows, etc.

Day 9 Lhasa Culture Tour | Lhasa Traditional Handicraft Art Center, Sera Monastery
Start your Tibet tour with a special experience at the Lhasa Traditional Handicraft Art Center and a visit to the Sera Monastery. (B, D)

Today, have fun in the Lhasa Traditional Handicraft Art Center for a close touch of Tibetan culture, and you will experience Tibetan Buddhism by witnessing the Monks' Debating in Sera Monastery.

In the morning, enjoy the experience in the Lhasa Traditional Handicraft Art Center, fully immerse yourself by making Tibetan incense, Tibetan calligraphy, and the secrets of block printing. Tibetan incense is typically burned as an offering during religious ceremonies and rituals in Tibetan Buddhism. The ingredients used for Tibetan incense usually include juniper, sandalwood, cedarwood, cinnamon, cloves, and various medicinal herbs. Besides learning how to make Tibetan incense, you can also participate in writing your own name in the Tibetan Language with the help of a local teacher, and engraving and printing it out. Handmade Tibetan incense and printed text can be taken home as a souvenir of the Tibetan cultural experience.

In the afternoon, drive approximately 7km (about 20 minutes) to visit Sera Monastery, which is one of the three great Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It offers the opportunity to experience Tibetan Buddhism up close. The highlight of Sera Monastery is watching the monks' debate, which takes place around 15:00-17:00 (except on Sundays). The debate is an interesting form of exchange, where one monk acts as the questioner, standing while the answerer or group of answerers sit. The standing monk asks questions and slaps his palms and stomps, each action having a special meaning, such as activating wisdom, and are not meant to be aggressive. You will also have the chance to attend prayer ceremonies, visit meditation halls, and learn about the monastic way of life. It is a must-visit destination to gain insight into the beliefs and practices of Tibetan Buddhism.

In the evening, enjoy a group dinner featuring delicious Tibetan cuisine, specially offered by AOT team.

Inside the Potala Palace, you will meet many Tibetan pilgrims who come from afar to pray at this sacred site, making it a lifetime destination for them. You can also ask your guide to provide more stories about Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd king of Tibet, who first built the Potala Palace in the 7th century for his marriage to Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty. "Jokhang" means "House of Buddha", and it houses a life-size statue of the 12-year-old Sakyamuni, which is considered a treasure of the Buddhist world. This is why Buddhist pilgrims consider it the holiest destination. The Jakhong temple is also renowned for its beautiful architecture. Frequently Asked Questions
Potala Palace Visit - Important Arrangement Notice

The Potala Palace is closed every Monday. If your scheduled visit falls on a Monday, the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly to ensure you can still visit as many included sites as possible.

This adjustment of our China Group Tours applies to the following itineraries that include Potala Palace visit: AOT-GT-005, AOT-GT-009, and AOT-GT-019.

Itinerary: AOT-GT-005 (Applicable Dates Listed Below)

4/5, 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31, 6/7, 6/14, 6/21, 8/30, 9/6, 10/4

If the original schedule places your Potala Palace visit on a Monday, the group itinerary will be rearranged as follows:

  • Sun: Arrive in Lhasa
  • Mon: Lhasa → Yamdrok Lake → Karola Glacier → Shigatse
  • Tue: Shigatse → Mount Everest
  • Wed: Everest → Shigatse
  • Thu: Shigatse → Tashilhunpo Monastery → Lhasa
  • Fri: Lhasa half-day city tour → Fly to Shanghai

To cover as many original sites as possible, flexible adjustments may be made based on real-time conditions:

After returning to Lhasa on Thursday, we will arrange Jokhang Temple + Barkhor Street, if arrival time allows (late arrival or Jokhang Temple closing may prevent entry).

We will try our best to secure Potala Palace tickets for Friday morning before your afternoon flight to Shanghai.

Please note: due to factors beyond our control - traffic delays, ticket availability, or monastery closures - we cannot guarantee Potala Palace visit or complete Lhasa city tour. If this is a concern, we recommend selecting an alternative departure date.

Itinerary: AOT-GT-009 (Applicable Dates Below)

4/10, 4/17, 5/29, 6/5, 6/12, 10/9

If your tour date places the Potala Palace visit on Monday, the group schedule will be adjusted as:

  • Sun: Arrive in Lhasa
  • Mon: Lhasa → Yamdrok Lake → Karola Glacier → Shigatse
  • Tue: Shigatse → Mount Everest
  • Wed: Everest → Shigatse
  • Thu: Shigatse → Tashilhunpo Monastery → Lhasa
  • Fri: Lhasa city tour (Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street) → Fly to Xi’an
Itinerary: AOT-GT-019

If the scheduled Potala Palace visit falls on Monday, we will adjust the order of the two Lhasa city-tour days accordingly.

How do I book a China group tour?

Select your travel dates and click “join-in a tour”. You will get a free enquiry and don’t need to pay immediately. After sending us your requirements, one of our professional travel experts will get back to you within 0.5 to 24 hours, and we guarantee to reserve a place for you first.

When all the information has been confirmed, then you make the payment. Please feel free to contact the travel expert directly if you have any questions prior to booking.

Deadline for Booking a Group Tour

The deadline for receiving guests is tentatively 7 days before departure. For trips to Tibet and the Yangtze River Three Gorges, the deadline is extended to 15 days before departure.

Transportation

In a group tour, you will transfer to tourist attractions within one city by coach. The maximum group size is 16 people, ensuring a small group for a comfortable travel pace.

The coaches selected are spacious and comfortable. For travel between destinations, we use domestic flights (economy seat) or high-speed trains (second class seat, usually under 6 hours). Local drivers will pick you up at the airport/train station and escort you to the hotel.

Meals

B stands for breakfast, served at your hotel each morning.

L stands for lunch. The restaurants we arrange are designated tourism restaurants approved by local tourism administration, maintaining excellent hygiene. Your guide will assist you in ordering dishes.

D stands for dinner. Please refer to the daily itinerary — dinners are usually excluded so you can try authentic Chinese food and local snacks. However, if you take the Yangtze River cruise, dinners will be included onboard. Similarly, during trips to Tibet, dinner is included when visiting Mount Everest Base Camp (e.g., Tibetan hot pot).

If you have special dietary requirements (vegetarian, halal, kosher, Indian, or gluten-free), please notify us before booking. We will do our best to accommodate you.

Regarding Children's Fees

(1) Occupying a bed: Children will be charged the adult rate.

(2) Not occupying a bed: Children will be charged the group tour fee minus the single room difference. Any ticket discounts will be refunded.

Single Room Supplement

If you are traveling alone and prefer a private room, a single room supplement will apply. Please contact our travel experts for the exact fee.

Free Pick-up & Drop-off Service

(1) Free pick-up for flights/trains arriving between 08:00 and 22:00.

(2) Free drop-off for flights/trains departing between 09:00 and 23:00.

Additional Cost for Private Transfer

(1) For arrival and departure transfers (1-2 persons): Early arrivals or late departures will incur an additional transfer fee.

(2) For flights arriving after 22:00 or departing before 09:00: An additional transfer fee will apply.

Where to Stay: Handpicked Hotel Options for China Group Tours

In a China group tour, you will stay in well-selected 3-star hotels located in convenient areas at each destination. All hotels feature windows, air-conditioning, hot water, showers, and Wi-Fi to ensure a comfortable stay.

For travelers taking a Yangtze River cruise, the ship will provide a relaxing experience, including comfortable accommodations between the Chongqing and Yichang section. For travelers visiting Mount Everest in Tibet, accommodations will be basic — you will stay at a camp or hostel at Mount Everest Base Camp.

You will share a standard twin room (two beds) with your travel partner. If you are traveling as a family of two, sharing the same room will be ideal. If you prefer to have your own room, a single room supplement will apply.
