Kazakhstan Itinerary 2026: How Many Days to Visit? (5-14 Day Plans)

Written by Celine Schneider|Updated: 2026-02-11

You see this massive country—the 9th largest in the world—and you are probably asking yourself: "How many days to visit Kazakhstan?"

If you want the short answer, here it is: For most travelers, 7 to 10 days is the ideal time to visit Kazakhstan.

Why? Because this duration allows you to see the modern cities, get out into that wild, beautiful nature that you saw on Instagram. However, if you are short on time, even 5 days can be magical if you stick to one region.

In this guide, I will break down exactly how to spend your time. Let's plan your perfect Kazakhstan itinerary.

How Many Days to Visit Kazakhstan? The Best Way to Split Your Time

Let me break down Kazakhstan's main destinations first, so you understand what you're choosing between.

Destination Days Needed What You'll See Best For
Almaty 2-4 days City sights, nearby mountains, cable cars, markets First-timers, mountain lovers
Astana 2-3 days Futuristic buildings, museums, modern mosques Architecture fans, city culture
Charyn Canyon 1 day (from Almaty) Red rock formations, desert hiking Nature photographers
Kolsay & Kaindy Lakes 2-3 days Three alpine lakes, sunken forest Alpine scenery lovers
Altyn Emel National Park 2-3 days Singing sand dunes, colorful mountains Adventure seekers
Shymkent & Turkestan 2-3 days Ancient Silk Road sites, historic mosques History buffs

As you can see, the answer to how many days to visit Kazakhstan really depends on your travel style. But let's be honest: most of you are coming here for the mountains and the unique culture.

If you have 5 days, stay in the South (Almaty). If you have 7-8 days, add the North (Astana). If you have 10-14 days, you can do the famous "Golden Ring" of nature properly. Let's look at the details.

Is 5 Days Enough to Visit Kazakhstan? (Almaty Only)

Yes, 5 days is enough, but only if you stay in Almaty. Almaty is the heart and soul of Kazakhstan. It was the capital until 1997, and it still feels like the cultural center. It is leafy, walkable, and surrounded by the massive Trans-Ili Alatau mountains.

For a 5-day trip, I recommend splitting your time like this: spend your first 1.5 to 2 days exploring the city vibes—cafes, museums, and parks. Then, spend the remaining 3 days exploring the nature outside the city. Here are some popular options:

  • Big Almaty Lake - A stunning turquoise mountain lake just 1 hour from the city. Perfect for photographers and nature lovers who want an easy trip.
  • Charyn Canyon - Often called "Kazakhstan's Grand Canyon." This dramatic red rock canyon is great for adventurous travelers who enjoy hiking and unique landscapes. The trip takes about 3-4 hours each way.
  • Shymbulak Ski Resort - A mountain village with cable cars and beautiful views. Good for families and people who want to experience the mountains without difficult hiking. You can ski in winter or just enjoy the scenery in summer.
  • Kolsai Lakes - Three peaceful alpine lakes surrounded by forests. Best for active travelers who like longer hikes and camping. This is a full-day trip.

The "Golden Ring" includes three famous spots: Charyn Canyon (the little brother of the Grand Canyon), Kolsai Lakes (beautiful mountain lakes), and Kaindy Lake (the famous sunken forest). This is the classic route that every tourist loves.

The Perfect Kazakhstan Itinerary 7-8 Days: Ideal Travel Length for First Timer

7 days lets you visit 1-2 major cities plus amazing natural sites. This is the ideal trip length for first-time visitors.

Spend 3-4 days in Almaty exploring the city and taking day trips to places like Big Almaty Lake or Charyn Canyon.

Use the remaining days to visit One:

I usually recommend adding Astana to your itinerary. Astana is the new capital looks like a sci-fi movie set. The architecture is futuristic, designed by world-famous architects like Norman Foster. While Almaty is old, cozy, and surrounded by mountains.

Here is a 7 days Kazakhstan itinerary you can refer:

Day 1-2: Astana City Tour. Visit the Baiterek Tower (the symbol of the city with the golden egg). Visit the Grand Mosque—it is one of the largest in Central Asia and is absolutely stunning. Walk around the Expo 2017 grounds.

Day 3-4: Almaty City Tour. Follow the first 2 days of the previous itinerary.

Day 5: Almaty - Big Almaty Lake – Almaty. Head to Big Almaty Lake. The water is a bright turquoise. We visited in November and the snow against the blue water was incredible. Stop at the falcon farm on the way down.

Day 6: Almaty - Charyn Canyon - Almaty A full day trip to the canyon. The hike through the Valley of Castles is about 2-3 km and very easy for most people.

Day 7: Almaty Departure.

How to Travel Around Kazakhstan?

Between Cities (Long Distance): Always fly if you can. Air Astana and its low-cost subsidiary FlyArystan are excellent, safe, and modern.

The train (Talgo) is fun for an experience, but the distances are huge. Almaty to Astana by train takes 15 to 24 hours. By plane? 90 minutes.

Within Cities: Download the Yandex Go app before you arrive. It is the "Uber" of Kazakhstan. It works in all major cities, it is very cheap, and you don't need to speak Russian or Kazakh to use it.

To Nature Spots (Canyons/Lakes): This is the hard part. Public transport to places like Kolsai Lakes or Altyn Emel is almost non-existent. You have two choices: rent a car (only if you are a confident driver—the roads can be rough) or hire a private driver/join a tour.

Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan?

The best time to visit Kazakhstan is May to June & September to October: These are the "Golden Months." The weather is perfect for hiking, the lakes are blue, and the city parks are beautiful.

November to March: Winter is for snow lovers. Almaty becomes a world-class skiing destination.

How Much Does It Cost?

Budget Traveler ($40-80 USD/day): Staying in hostels, eating Samsa (meat pastries) and Lagman (noodles) at local canteens, and using trains/buses.

Mid-Range/Comfort ($80-120 USD/day): This is where most people should aim. This budget allows for nice 3-4 star hotels, good restaurant meals with wine, and hiring a driver for the difficult nature trips.

Luxury ($150+ USD/day): You can stay at the Ritz-Carlton, eat at high-end steakhouses, and have a private guide and SUV for everything.

Note: In 2026, prices have risen slightly, but it still remains much cheaper than Europe or the UAE.

Where to Stay in Kazakhstan?

In Almaty: Stay near Dostyk Avenue or Panfilov Park. This is the "Golden Square." You can walk to all the best cafes and parks from here.

In Astana: Stay on the Left Bank (the new city) near the Baiterek Tower. This is where the action is. The Right Bank is the old city—it's cheaper, but far from the main sights.

In Villages (Saty/Basshi): Do not expect Hilton hotels. The standard accommodation here is a Guesthouse or a Yurt Camp. Facilities might be basic (sometimes shared bathrooms), but the hospitality of the Kazakh hosts and the homemade food are incredible.

Is 7 days enough for Kazakhstan? Yes! As shown in our 7-day itinerary, it is the perfect amount of time to see both major cities and the best natural sites around Almaty.

Do I need a visa for 7 days? As of 2026, many countries (including India, UAE, and most of Europe) have 14 to 30 days of visa-free entry. Always check the official government portal before booking, as rules can change.

Is Kazakhstan safe? Extremely. As an expat living here, I can tell you that Almaty and Astana are safer than many major cities in the US or Europe. People are very welcoming and curious about tourists.
