What Is SDF in Bhutan?

The Bhutan Tourism Fee, also known as the Bhutan SDF Fee or Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee, is a mandatory tourist tax paid by all visitors on a tourist visa and will be charged during the Visa application process.
Since Bhutan opened to tourists in 1974, this Bhutan Tourist Tax has been integral to its Gross National Happiness philosophy.
Initially modest, the Bhutan Daily Tourist Fee has increased over time to fund environmental and cultural preservation. In September 2022, the Bhutan SDF Fee was raised to $200 per night, reflecting Bhutan's commitment to high-value, low-impact tourism.
However, as a measure to reboost Bhutan's Tourism, a 50% discount was introduced in 2023, bringing down the Bhutan Tourism Fee to $100 per night. This reduced rate will be in effect until 2027, with some exemptions applying.
This dynamic approach ensures the Bhutan SDF Fee remains a vital tool for safeguarding Bhutan's unique beauty while welcoming travelers who share its values.
How Much is SDF in Bhutan? How is the Bhutan Daily Tax Calculated?
Calculating your Bhutan trip cost is simple because the SDF is a flat daily rate. To help you plan, here is how the Bhutan daily tax breaks down for different travelers:
| Traveler Type | Daily SDF Rate | Note |
| Adults (International) | US$100 | Standard rate until 2027 |
| Children (6–12 years) | US$50 | 50% discount applied |
| Children (Under 6) | Exempt | No SDF required |
| Indian Nationals | Nu. 1,200 | Approx. US$15 per night |
Example Calculation (5-Day / 4-Night Bhutan Trip)
Since the SDF is charged per night, a typical 5-day Bhutan journey (which includes 4 nights) would be calculated as follows:
- 1 Adult: 4 nights × $100 = $400 total
- Family (2 Adults + 1 Child aged 8): (4 nights × $200) + (4 nights × $50) = $1,000 total
Your visa is only issued once the full SDF for your stay has been processed! If you decide to extend your stay while in Bhutan, you can pay the additional daily tax locally through your guide.
What about the Bhutan GST?

While the SDF is a daily government levy, you may also see a 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on your receipts.
Where you’ll see it: In luxury hotels, high-end restaurants, or when buying certain souvenirs.
Is it included? Most Bhutan tour packages from Asia Odyssey Travel already include the necessary taxes for your standard meals and stays, so you won’t have to worry about hidden surprises.
How to Pay SDF (& GST) in Bhutan?

Paying your tourism fees is a straightforward process, but the timing for each is different.
Paying the SDF (In Advance)
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid at the same time you apply for your Bhutan Visa.
Most of our travelers find it easiest to pay through their tour operator (like Asia Odyssey Travel). We include the SDF in your total tour invoice and handle the government wire transfer for you.
Alternatively, if you apply for your visa independently, you can pay via the official Department of Immigration portal using a credit card or wire transfer.
Paying the GST (On the Ground)
The 10% Goods and Services Tax is usually already included in the price tags of items or the "net price" of your hotel room.
If you are dining at a high-end restaurant or buying luxury handicrafts, the GST will simply be added to your final bill.
You can pay this locally using cash (BTN or INR) or credit cards (Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in major cities like Thimphu and Paro).
Discounts & Exemptions of Bhutan's SDF Fee

With recent discount starting from 2023 you can enjoy a lower rate of Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in Bhutan while traveling. Also there are a few specific situations where you may be eligible for a reduced fee or even an exemption.
Discounted Bhutan SDF Fee: Promoting Sustainable Development
Bhutan's current 50% reduction on the Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), also known as the Bhutan Tourism Fee or Bhutan Tourist Tax, bringing it down to US$100 per person per night, is a result of several factors:

- As of December 27, 2023, Duration-Based Incentives for Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) are no longer in effect.
- The Department of Immigration will provide refunds for the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in the case of trip cancellations or modifications. However, please note that any bank charges incurred will be deducted from the total amount refunded.
