Bhutan Punakha Tours: Punakha Dzong Trips

Punakha is nestled in the west-central of Bhutan, about 72 km away from the capital Thimphu. Punakha is set at the confluence of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers, nestled in the Himalayan lowlands (1,243 meters above sea level), and is renowned for its temperate climate and fertile valleys. Central to Punakha's allure is the gorgeous Punakha Dzong, which is considered one of the most beautiful dzongs in Bhutan, especially in spring when the lilac-colored jacaranda trees bring a lush sensuality to the dzong’s characteristically towering whitewashed walls. In addition to Punakha Dzong, there are also other spiritual sites such as Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, a revered Bhutanese saint, and Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, a peaceful retreat that houses a community of nuns.

Visitors to Punakha can also explore the serene expanse of the Punakha Valley, with its terraced rice fields and traditional villages, offering picturesque views and a glimpse into the rural life of Bhutan. Walking across the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, offering breathtaking views of the lush valley and the glacier-fed Po Chhu River below. Hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten on a hilltop, offering panoramic river and valley vistas.

For outdoor enthusiasts, white-water rafting on the Mo Chhu or Pho Chhu rivers delivers excitement and scenic beauty, allowing you to navigate rapids while enjoying the surrounding landscapes and wildlife.

How to Plan Bhutan Punakha Tour?

For a short trip, it is recommended to visit Punakha for 1 or 2 days. If you are planning a tour of Bhutan, it is recommended to visit Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha in one trip, which are iconic destinations in Western Bhutan. This typically requires 4-6 days. Or extend by 1 or 2 days and venture off the beaten path into the Haa or Phobjikha valleys.

Special shoutout to Ms. Mandy who planned our trip, answered all our questions, was incredibly responsive, and was always helpful. She checked in during our trip to make sure we were okay as well. beautiful trip right from the begining…
beautiful trip right from the begining till the end . I booked my trip through AOT and I should say , from the begining , everything was so easy and cordinated.I as attended to by Kayla first , she was efficient and prompt , followed by Steven , who was equally good , everything was so systematic , the whole trip was put together just through email . Then comes the final trip , the amazingly beautiful bhutan ,what a country and the trip was made even more wonderful by my guide Miss TENZIN who was such a darling and driver Dorji who was such a caring soul. In spite being a solo trip , this 2 were my family for 5 days and they took such good care of me . The MEMORIES of Bhutan will always remain with me , thank you AOT for giving me such beautiful memories .
