Bhutan Winter Tours: Winter Vacation in Bhutan

Winter in Bhutan, from December to February, is a period of serene beauty and cultural richness. During this season, the landscape is transformed into a picturesque view, with snow-capped Himalayan peaks and the valley resembling a fairytale setting. The majestic dzongs and monasteries atop hills and cliff edges stand out against the pure white snow. Winter also welcomes the black-necked cranes from northern Tibet, a highlight for nature enthusiasts. While there may be snowfall in higher regions, the lower altitude areas, especially in the subtropical and tropical zones like the Punakha Valley still remain relatively mild and pleasant. Winter is also a time for numerous festivals in Bhutan like Punakha Dromche and Tshechu. With fewer tourists, winter offers an ideal chance for deep cultural immersion and more authentic interactions with locals. Additionally, prices may be lower compared to peak tourist seasons. If you asked whether Bhutan is an ideal winter destination, the answer is a resounding yes!

What to do in Bhutan Winter Tours?

Scenic Himalayan Vistas: Witness the breathtaking beauty of snow-capped mountains under the clear winter sky. Dochula Pass is a must-visit spot as as you can usually witness a 360-degree view of the Himalayas.

Bird Watching: The endangered Black-necked cranes typically arrive in mid-November and stay until the end of February. Key places for sighting include the Gangtey Monastery in the Phobjikha Valley and the area of Chummey in Bumthang.

Festive Celebrations: Enjoy local winter festivals like Dochula Tsechu, Punakha Dromche and Tshechu, and Trongsa Tshechu showcasing unique cultural performances and rituals.

Monastery Explorations: Discover ancient monasteries and dzongs adorned in winter's icy attire, like Paro Dzong or Tiger's Nest Monastery. Experience serenity and awe amidst the snow-covered surroundings.

Winter Treks: Explore lower altitude treks like the Druk Path, Tiger’s Nest Hike, and Gangtey Nature Trail, offering stunning views and fewer fellow trekkers.

Relaxing Hot Springs: Unwind in the therapeutic hot springs (shachus) of Gasa Tshachu and Chubu Tshachu, a perfect retreat in the chilly weather.

Fantastic trip to Bhutan
I had my 6-day trip organized to Bhutan with Asia Odyssey Travel, and it was definitely one of the best trips in my life! I was so relaxed during the trip because everything was taken care of: food, transportation, tickets to attractions, hotels. Before my trip, Fox answered all my questions and made me very well prepared for Bhutan. Their customer sevice is excellent. I highly recommend to go with them, and I am already booking my next tour to Nepal next year with Asia Odyssey! Thank you for creating fantastic memories in Bhutan for me!

Runny was my initial contact with AOT and she couldn’t of done more to help organise my trip to Bhutan, from advice to
Visas she was always available to answer my queries, even at weekends and evenings
Arrival into Bhutan met by my guides for the week, Migma and Chimi and our driver, we were a group of 9 and for the next 6 days we were totally looked after
From the tour to the accommodations to the food everything was faultless, our guides knowledge was outstanding sharing history and stories about Bhutan and also personal stories about lifestyle in Bhutan. No question was ever left unanswered and no question was too much
Bhutan is a beautiful country, with warm kind hearted people, who couldn’t do enough for you … I left with a tear in my eye… Bhutan you stole my heart, made even more special by Migma and Chimi and the team at AOT

Fantasitic trip to unique locations.
We decided about a month before we went that we would like to go to a place we had always talked about but until now hadn't done so. After searching the internet, we found Asia Odyssey Travel and Zeva. They helped us to plan a trip called the senior tour which took us from Xining, through Lhasa Tibet onward to Nepal and finally we added Bhutan. I had always wanted to go to Bhutan once I had heard of the Gross National Happiness they sought for their people. From the beginning working with Zeva was a breeze. She helped us plan our trip and kept in touch with us throughout the journey. Asia Odyssey uses local guides for each segment of the trip that have a stake in and live in the culture they share with us. The enthusiasm the guides showed in sharing their history, special places, and unique culture was quite evident and made the experience much more enriching. There was little to no shopping stops unless you chose to do so which left more time to really immerse yourself in the places you were visiting. Zeva as well as the guides were very flexible in their approach which made planning and making the most of trip easy to accomplish. The care and concern were very evident which made for a smooth, safe and enjoyable experience. The communication was excellent and Zeva gave us the tips we needed to get our visa and Tibet travel papers. I cannot recommend their services enough.
