Day 1 Hailar, Hulunbuir Arrival | Airport Pick-up & Hotel Check-in

Hailar is the main urban district and gateway of Hulunbuir City in Inner Mongolia, China. Known as the "Pearl of the Grasslands," it blends a friendly city vibe with the vast beauty of the surrounding grasslands.

On this day, you will take a flight to Hulunbuir City and arrive at Hailar Dongshan International Airport, which is located about 7 to 10 kilometers east of Hailar’s city center. Upon arrival, our local guide and driver will meet you at the airport. You will be transferred to downtown Hailar in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle - a drive that takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Our guide will assist you with hotel check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Hailar at your own pace.

Free Time Ideas (Depending on Arrival Time):

If you arrive in Hailar early, you can explore the city at your own pace. Asia Odyssey Travel recommends starting with Genghis Khan Square (成吉思汗广场), the city’s iconic landmark. Here, you’ll find impressive statues, including the grand statue of Genghis Khan on horseback - symbolizing strength, unity, and the spirit of the grasslands.

Next, visit the Hulunbuir National Museum (呼伦贝尔民族博物馆). This museum offers fascinating exhibits about the region’s diverse ethnic groups, grassland culture, and rich history.

If time permits, head to Hailar Old Town (海拉尔古城). Stroll through reconstructed historic streets with a blend of architectural styles, enjoy folk performances, and shop for local crafts.

Finally, make your way to the Hailar Night Market (海拉尔夜市) to experience the city’s vibrant evening atmosphere and sample some local specialties.

Day 2 Hailar - Hulunbuir Grassland (Morigele River) - Erguna Wetland - Genhe City

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Hailar. Then, you’ll set off for the Hulunbuir Grassland, known as “the most beautiful grassland in China.” This region is famous for its endless rolling meadows, blue skies, and a stunning mosaic of rivers, forests, and wetlands.

Your first destination is the Morigele River, one of the most iconic and beautiful rivers on the Hulunbuir Grassland. The Morigele River is renowned for its winding, serpentine path - often called “the First Winding River under Heaven.” Flowing gracefully across the vast steppe, it is often described as a silver necklace adorning the grassland. Here, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take amazing photos: both banks of the river are covered with lush grass and dotted with grazing cattle and sheep, creating a classic grassland landscape. If you wish, you can also experience horseback riding and archery (optional experience, extra fees) at the local Mongolian camps. Riding along the riverbank or across the grassland offers an unforgettable and immersive adventure.

After exploring the grassland, you will continue to the Erguna Wetland. This is the largest and best-preserved natural wetland in China, often referred to as the “No. 1 Wetland in Asia.” Covering about 12,000 hectares, the wetland features gently rolling terrain, a dense network of rivers and streams (mainly formed by the Ergun River and its tributaries), and a rich variety of plant and animal life. Upon arrival, you can walk along wooden walkways to the main viewing platform, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the winding rivers and the vast wetland. Strolling on the boardwalks allows you to explore forests, meadows, and riversides up close, getting a closer look at the wetland’s unique plants and birds. (Optional: A sightseeing bus is available from the entrance to the viewing platform for an additional fee.)

Travel Tips:

  1. Best time to visit:June to September (summer and autumn), when the scenery is at its greenest and most vibrant.
  2. What to bring:Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent in summer; photographers may want to bring a telephoto lens.

After the tour, you will be transferred to Genhe city - China’s “Cold Pole”. It is about 129km, about 2 hours’ drive. Stay overnight in Genhe.

Day 3 Genhe City - Oruguya Evenki Ethnic Tribe - Moridaga National Forest Park - Shiwei Town

After breakfast, set out for a day filled with ethnic culture and stunning landscapes. Your first stop is the Oruguya Evenki Ethnic Tribe (Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe, 敖鲁古雅鄂温克驯鹿部落). This is the only ethnic community in China that raises reindeer and is known as the country’s “Last Hunting Tribe.”

The Evenki people are among China’s earliest reindeer herders, with a history of more than 300 years. Traditionally, they lived a nomadic lifestyle, relying on hunting, reindeer herding, and foraging. They migrated with the seasons and lived in close harmony with the forests and their animals.

Reindeer play a vital role in Evenki life. Known as the “boats of the forest,” reindeer are essential for transportation, carrying goods, providing food, and holding deep spiritual meaning for the tribe. During your visit, you can observe, feed, and gently touch the reindeer, and take photos with them - experiencing the special connection between people and animals.

After your visit, continue to Moridaga National Forest Park (莫尔道嘎国家森林公园). Nestled in the heart of the Greater Khingan Range, this park is one of the best-preserved and most pristine cold-temperate forest ecosystems in northern China, often called the “Oxygen Bar of the North.”

The park features vast stretches of larch, birch, and Scots pine forests, along with spruce, fir, and oak trees. The landscape transforms with the seasons: lush green in summer, vibrant with color in autumn, and blanketed with snow in winter. You’ll have the opportunity to walk along scenic hiking trails and experience the forest up close.

If you need: Optional Forest Train (extra fee needed):

The park also offers a charming forest train experience. The train makes 4 stops. The entire train ride takes about 1 h and 40 m, providing a relaxing way to immerse yourself in the park’s peace and beauty.

After the tour, you will be transferred to Shiwei (78 km, about 1.5-hour drive). Shiwei is a Russian-style town located right on the border between China and Russia. Here, you will see onion-domed wooden houses, colorful fences, and Russian-style churches lining the streets. Stay overnight in Shiwei.

Day 4 Shiwei - Haur River - Heishantou (Grassland, Sunset, Bonfire Party)

After breakfast, you will set out for your next destination and say goodbye to Shiwei. This section of the journey is considered one of the most beautiful drives in Hulunbuir. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning river views, rolling grasslands, birch forests, wetlands, authentic Russian villages, and peaceful countryside scenery.

First, you will visit the Haur River Scenic Area. The Haur River’s winding course creates the unique “Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns” landscape. You will get to the observation deck and high points for breathtaking panoramic views. You can walk through tranquil birch woods along the riverbanks. In spring and summer, the forests are lush and green; in autumn, they turn golden, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere. Totally relaxing trip in this area.

Afterwards, you will drive for another 3 hours to reach Heishantou. Heishantou is one of the best places in Hulunbuir for horseback riding, with vast, unspoiled grassland pastures. (Optional experience, extra expenses on your own: Here, you can enjoy a variety of activities, such as riding across the grassland, climbing hills on horseback, and galloping through the open steppe, truly feeling the freedom of the grasslands.)

When evening falls, Heishantou is famous for having one of the most beautiful sunsets in Hulunbuir. You can climb up to the Heishantou viewing platform or ride to higher ground for a panoramic view of endless grasslands and the winding Ergun River. At sunset, the sky glows gold, orange, and purple, with the grasslands and river reflecting the beautiful colors - perfect for photography or simply enjoying the moment.

In the evening, experience staying in a traditional Mongolian yurt on the grassland. At night, join a bonfire party under the stars, enjoying Mongolian singing, dancing, wrestling, and archery. It will be a joyful night on the grassland.

Day 5 Heishantou - Manzhouli | Hulun Lake, Manzhouli Matryoshka Plaza, Guomen

On this day, you will have a beautiful time when wake up on the grassland. And after breakfast, let’s move to Manzhouli. Leaving Heishantou, your car glides along smooth, open roads that seem to stretch endlessly across the green carpet of the grasslands. In summer, the prairie is lush and dotted with wildflowers; in autumn, it turns golden and gently undulates under the wide sky. Herds of cattle, sheep, and horses graze freely, adding life and movement to the tranquil panorama.

After 3.5-hour drive, you will arrive at Hulun Lake, located about 40 km south of Manzhouli. As the largest lake in Inner Mongolia and the fifth largest freshwater lake in China, Hulun Lake covers an impressive 2,339 square kilometers, stretching roughly 93 km from east to west and 35 km from north to south. Around the lake, you will be greeted by breathtaking lakeside scenery and the tranquil beauty of pastoral life. Herds of cattle, sheep, and horses graze freely along the water’s edge, and you can also enjoy birdwatching.

Later, head to Manzhouli and begin your visit at the Guomen Scenic Area (China-Russia Border Gate). Admire the impressive architecture of the border gate, overlook the railway junction between China and Russia, and catch a glimpse of the Russian town of Zabaikalsk.

Next, visit Matryoshka Square (Russian Matryoshka Doll Square). This themed square, featuring giant Russian nesting dolls, is one of the most exotic and photogenic landmarks in Manzhouli. Take time to appreciate the colorful, oversized matryoshka dolls, Russian-style buildings, fountains, and sculptures.

Stay overnight in Manzhouli.

Trip of a lifetime: before, during and after

Tour name: Line B2, 8 days Lhasa-Yamdroktso-Shigaste-Mt.Everest tour.

Key people: Bob (local Tibetan tour guide), Catherine Wang (travel consultant), Mr. Yu. Jian (driver).

This tour was sublime, a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! From the very start, I was met with grace and incredible kindness. The driver assigned to me by the company was Susan and greeted me with a smile on her face, as well as the traditional Tibetan scarf she delicately placed around my neck. She then kindly offered to take some photos of me outside of the airport and offered me some water as we drove to the first accommodation in Lhasa. She then sent me a few locations within the city to explore, for shopping and food and shared her experience of living in the region for over a decade.

The following day we met our tour guide Bob, who to date has been my favourite tour guide. He was nothing short of incredible. Not only did he translate everything from Tibetan to Mandarin and English, making the tour accessible to all of us, but went above and beyond for all of us. Whether it was taking extra photos from awkward angles as the photographer to answering our follow-up questions or even giving us his own recommendations i.e. where to rent the traditional Tibetan clothes or shop for souvenirs. He was incredibly knowledgeable and humble- a true mix of wisdom and personal insight. I found his personal experiences and insight made the tour feel more authentic, especially as he had been doing this since 2009. His great anecdotes and true appreciation of the Tibetan culture, as well as his uplifting attitude and great sense of humour made the trip that much more special. Especially on the days when we were on the road for up to 7 hours, as we began the travel towards Everest Base Camp (EBC).

In terms of the people I met on the tour, it was truly a mixed bag in the best way possible! As I was a 22-year-old solo solo-female traveler you might expect that I would want to be around a similar company. In contrast, I had the best time ever with a wildly different demographic! From middle-aged interracial married couples to retired solo travelers and other solo travelers, my group was made up of people from different neighbouring countries each with their own experiences of travel. As someone who is learning Chinese this was perfect for improving my linguistic skills however most could also speak English so there were no language barriers either.

The people in my group were lovely, kind and interesting characters. Each with open-minds and curiousity about the Tibetan culture. Having people from different walks of life and experiences in my group turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Even with our different backgrounds, we shared laughter, food and stories. I am grateful to have been in the same group as them for those 8 days- it was a true pleasure. Also, the nature of the tour meant that we overlapped with different groups based on both of our itineraries, meaning that we mixed with others for the first few days of the tour. This was a great way to also meet others as some were also staying at the same hotel as us.

The driver Mr. Yu Jian was also incredible. He so kindly brought our luggage in and out of the vehicles and always waited for us patiently in the mornings. Even when we (I) were running late, losing track of the timings and rushing outside with a hastily prepared buffet breakfast to go.

In terms of the tour, my personal highlights were of course seeing EBC and Everest in person, however, the in-betweens were just as remarkable. The 108 zig-zags we had to endure on the way to EBC, the petrol station stops where we’d stretch our legs and interact with the locals (often trying to sell us things) and growing closer and closer to the enchanting Everest. Being able to see the surreal landscape views of Tibet, both in Lhasa and outside, was awe-inducing. As I flew in on 25/03, I was met with the mountainscape being submerged with snow. By the time we made it to EBC, the snow had mostly melted but the rugged mountain view perfectly complemented the seemingly endless holy Yamdrok Lake. It was a nature lover’s paradise through and through, especially with the domesticated and wild animals across the area.

I also thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the locals. They met me with such curiosity, warmth and open-mindedness. I was touched to be perhaps the first black European person they met, and hope that they left our interactions with a new perspective. The first meal I had in Tibet was also sublime (I will put a picture below of the dish and a screenshot of the location I went to, recommended to me by my first driver). There was also a traditional Tibetan musical performance shortly after I had finished my meal, also recommended to me by Susan which began around 8pm!

My favourite monastery we visited was also the Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Shigatse, which we visited on our penultimate day in Tibet. We went on a Sunday which meant that not many tourists, if any, were there. Especially the tour took place during the off-season (End of March/Early April). As such it was an immersive experience being able to calmly walk through the monastery. With a history dating back to 1447, I felt like I connected to this the most, with there being living trees on the site that had been first planted over 400 years ago! Even seeing locals re-paint some of the religious paintings and the monks ready to enter for their evening classes gave a sense of serenity. It was a wonderful way to end the trip. Also, I would like to highlight seeing the Yamdrok Lake’s deep shades of turquoise from many angles (extraordinary), trying yak meat for the first time (different and at times tasty), seeing the Karola glacier (even when the rest of the landscape was snowless), seeing monks’ daily debates at Sera Monastery, of course climbing and seeing Polata Palace (tip: bring a 50 RMB note with you to take the famed picture outside Polata Palace- a fellow tour member loaned me his, thanks Yuki!), as well as Jokhang Temple and the Tibetan incense making where the activity leader wrote us, upon our request, a sign in the Tibetan language with anything i.e. our name or quotes. Seeing the stars on the first day of the new moon in the village just outside of Everest was also phenomenal (tip: walk 5-10 minutes in the opposite direction of heading into town to escape the light pollution for a better view, we only stayed out for 15 minutes just around midnight due to fatigue but if you really commit to it and maybe even venture further out and perhaps later on in the night around the new moon phase you will be stunned out what will find in the starry night sky.. hopefully the milky way!).

I would also like to give a warm mention to the hotel workers in the first hotel we stayed in Lhasa as they were incredibly kind to me. They were curious to know what my story was and where I had travelled as well as catering to my needs in the mornings (i.e. morning coffee etc.). Though they won’t see this, the woman working at the Tibetan clothes’ rental who helped me take pictures on my phone and conversed with me was also very kind! Even the shopkeeper who gave me a freebie after I bought some goods from his store was patient with me as I perused through the shops looking for instant noodles. Overall, I was met with such kindness from the very start of the trip until the very end!

Regarding altitude sickness, the tour will provide you with one free bottle of oxygen, as well as an emergency tank of oxygen in the shuttle bus. For reference I didn’t finish the bottle of oxygen throughout the trip but bought a spare one from the supermarket down the road from the hotel in Lhasa and the quality was great for only a few more RMB (lasted the entire trip). With a lot of water for hydration and taking it easy, alongside deep breaths, I think this tour is accessible to anyone without any underlying health conditions.

Finally, I would like to thank my tour agent Catherine Wang who has supported me throughout this trip! From when I first sent an email back in December 2024 to inquire about this tour until present she has supported me and provided me with updates throughout this process. Although I sent persistent emails (regarding the Shigatse earthquake and permit process/progress update) she always kept me in the loop. Even during the trip she had sent me an email to ask how it was going. Thank you very much for your patience and hard work, this trip has been the trip of a lifetime!

TLDR: I would 1000% recommend this trip and tour. All the little moments and cherished memories I have made will last a lifetime. Thank you to Bob, Mr. Yu Jian, Catherine, Susan, my tour group members and all the others who have made this trip so special. I am beyond grateful.
