Where Is Jiuzhaigou National Park & How Do You Get There?

Jiuzhaigou sits deep in the mountains of northern Sichuan, about 400 km (250 miles) from Chengdu. It feels remote—and yes, it kind of is—but getting there today is much easier than most people expect.

For most travelers, the journey starts from Chengdu. From there, you've got three main options: train + bus, direct bus, or flight. Each sounds simple on paper—but the reality is a bit more nuanced.

Train + Bus (Best Overall Choice)

This is currently the most popular—and surprisingly the most efficient—way to reach Jiuzhaigou.

Since the high-speed rail line opened, you can take a train from Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai Station in about 1.5–2.5 hours. Trains run frequently throughout the day (roughly from early morning to evening), so it's very flexible.

From the station, you'll still need to take a 2-hour bus ride through mountain roads to reach Jiuzhaigou.

Total travel time: around 4–5 hours door to door

Direct Bus (Budget & Hassle-Free)

If you prefer a simple, no-transfer option, the direct bus from Chengdu is the easiest.

It takes about 5–7 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

The big advantage? It's door-to-door—no need to switch between train stations or arrange extra transport.

But here's the catch:

Direct Bus Tips
  • Mountain roads + holidays = possible delays
  • Travel time can stretch longer in bad weather

Still, for budget travelers or those who don't want to think too much about logistics, it's a solid option.

Flight (Not Always the Fastest)

Flying sounds like the fastest option—but in reality, it's not necessarily quicker.

Here's why:

  • 1–2 hours to reach Chengdu airport
  • ~45-minute flight
  • 1.5–2 hour drive from Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport to the park
  • Plus check-in, security, waiting time

Total travel time: also around 4–5 hours

And as of now, flights are very limited (typically just one per day), which makes planning less flexible.

It's Far—But Is Jiuzhaigou National Park Worth the Trip?

For many travelers, Jiuzhaigou feels far—and getting there can take some effort. Flights, mountain roads, and transfers are often part of the journey. So the big question is: is it really worth it?

In short—yes, absolutely.

Jiuzhaigou is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and is often described as having some of the most beautiful water landscapes in China.

There's even a famous saying: "After visiting Jiuzhaigou, no other water is worth seeing."

It may sound like an exaggeration—but on a clear day, when you see those glowing turquoise lakes and mirror-like reflections with your own eyes, it suddenly makes perfect sense.

For nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to experience something truly different, Jiuzhaigou is 100% worth the journey.

The scenery is unique, well-preserved, and easy to explore thanks to an efficient shuttle system inside the park. Even seniors or families with kids can comfortably enjoy the main highlights without long or exhausting hikes.

That said, if you're prone to motion sickness, it's worth thinking twice. Many routes to Jiuzhaigou involve winding mountain roads, especially if you travel by bus or car.

What to Do & See in Jiuzhaigou National Park

Jiuzhaigou isn't about ticking off dozens of lakes one by one. It's about following the water—watching it, photographing it, and walking closer to it.

When Is the Most Beautiful Time to Visit Jiuzhaigou?

Jiuzhaigou sits high in the mountains (2,000–3,100m), which gives it dramatic, ever-changing scenery throughout the year.

Autumn (September to November) – The Absolute Showstopper

Five Flower Lake (Wuhuahai) in Jiuzhaigou Valley

Pro Tips for Visiting Jiuzhaigou in Autumn
  • Peak Foliage: Late October to early November (Oct 20–Nov 10) is when the autumn colors are at their absolute best.
  • Avoid Weekends: Visiting on weekdays helps you enjoy the scenery with fewer crowds.
  • Book Early: Reserve your park tickets and hotel at least a week in advance to avoid the risk of sold-out entry.

Summer (July to August) – Cool Escape & Green Paradise

The lakes are full and vibrant, and the surrounding greenery is lush. Thanks to Jiuzhaigou's high elevation, it's pleasantly cool even in July and August—a perfect escape from the heat elsewhere in China.

Just remember: summer is peak tourist season, so plan early to avoid the crowds.

Winter (December to Early March) – Quiet & Magical

Blue skies, glistening white snow, and icy lakes give the scenery a natural filter—the water looks even bluer, the forests sparkle, and the waterfalls sometimes freeze into delicate ice sculptures.

It's quiet, peaceful, and unforgettable—but dress warmly, because it can be very cold, and some higher trails may be slippery or less accessible.

Snowy Five Flower Lake in Jiuzhaigou Valley

Spring (April to June) – Beautiful But Moody

Trees are still bare in many areas, water levels can be low, and rain or fog is common. While you might catch early blossoms, the overall effect is less dramatic, and hiking or sightseeing can feel damp and chilly.

Spring is best if you're chasing fewer crowds and don't mind a quieter, more muted landscape.

I'm a Singaporean traveller who booked a private solo tour. I chanced upon AOT after I googled and decided to travel last min. My planner from AOT named Rita was very patient towards all my request and changes, she is knowledgeable and provided excellent advice for my 8 days trip arrangement from Shanghai, Zhangjiajie N Chongqing. Although there were very minor hiccups just like any overseas holiday, it was still a well planned trip. I would like thank all my tour guides and drivers (师父) for looking after me so well. Special mention to Zhangjiajie Tour Guide named Ms Rita Wang, she looks after her client with her sincerest heart into the smallest details such as eating habits and my lifestyle. (Example: Turning A/C on knowing we Singaporeans can't live without A/C in car & also I don't even have to look at menu to order food becos she knows what I want to eat) Also thank you 杨师父 who tagged team with Rita, he is a very good skilled safe driver and knows how look after me during long haul journey drive inter cities. I would strongly reccomended anyone who wants to travel to look for Rita or her colleagues from Asia Odyssey Travel. Lastly, thank you to all whom I've crossed path during my trip.
