Day 1  Arrival in Lanzhou

Welcome to Lanzhou, an ancient city beside the Yellow River. Most tourists, whose destinations are the ancient sites on the Silk Road, such as Zhangye and Dunhuang, need to use Lanzhou as a transfer station. However, there are also many wonderful tourist attractions in Lanzhou, among which the Gansu Museum, White Pagoda Mountain and the First Bridge on the Yellow River are the most renowned.

Day 2  Train to Zhangye

After breakfast, you will take a 4-hour long train ride to Zhangye

Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park features its Danxia landform and colorful hills. The lofty Seven-Color Fairy Mountain is the core tourist area in the park. The orange part of the mountain looks like a koi fish. When the sun is shining on the mountain, it looks like the koi fish is swimming through the mountain.

Day 3  Jiayuguan Great Wall Tour

After visiting the Giant Buddha Temple in Zhangye, you will take 2.5-hour long train ride to Jiayuguan for sightseeing.

Giant Buddha Temple
The Giant Buddha Temple is built to house a giant statue of Sakyamuni, the creator of Buddhism. The 34.5 meters long Sakyamuni is lying on a 1.2 meters high Buddhist altar. Tourists can also learn about Chinese fairy tales via the murals about monsters in the temple.
Jiayuguan Great Wall
The Jiayuguan Great Wall was the westmost great wall sections built in Ming dynasty. Its inside and outside parts and ditch were three critical defense lines. There are 14 watching towers on the Jiayuguan Great Wall.
Jiayuguan Pass
Initially built in 1372 AD, Jiayuguan Pass is located in the southwest of Jiayuguan. It was the first pass and fort on the Great Wall built in Ming dynasty (1368-1644 AD). Standing on the pass, tourists can have a spectacular view of the Great Wall and desert.
Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum
Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum is situated at the north side of Jiayuanguan. To help people from home and abroad better understand Chinese ancient history, Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum is the first museum that presents the theme of the 3000 years’ Great Wall history.

Day 4  Yulin Grottoes

Today, you will drive to Dunhuang, an ancient city on the Silk Road and visit the Yulin Grottoes.

Yulin Grottoes
Like other grottoes in China, the Yulin Grottoes are also renowned for its vivid Buddhist frescos. The most famous fresco is in the third grotto. The 18 Kungfu monks are the theme of that fresco.

Travel tips: It is recommended to take a stroll in the local market of Shazhou or watch the dance show “Silk Road Flowers and Rain” at night

Day 5  Mogao Grottoes
Mogao Grottoes
Thousands of antiques and statues of Buddha are collected in the Mogao Grottoes. Besides, tourist can admire the frescos, which cover an area of 45,000 square kilometers in these grottoes. The Mogao Grottoes were listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1987.
Mingsha Hill
The Mingsha Hill is renowned for its “Singing Sand”. When the sand on the hill is being blew by wind, the sound is like the sand is singing. Standing on the top of thill, tourists can have spectacular desert view.
Crescent Lake
The Crescent Lake looks like a crescent in a desert. That is why it is named Crescent Lake. Although the lake is surrounded by desert, it never dries up and is never buried by quicksand. There are dense reeds on the south bank of the lake.

Day 6  Train to Turpan

You will take a train to Turpan today. Your guide will meetyou at the train station in Turpan and help you check in your hotel.

Day 7  Turpan Tour
Karez Irritation Systems
Turpan is located in an endless desert, so local people constructed the Karez Irritation Systems to pump the underground water. The first Karez was constructed over 500 years ago. The grapes in Turpan are extremely sweet due to the underground water’s nurture.
Jiaohe City Ruins
Around 800 years ago, the Jiaohe City was buried by the sand in Turpan. Although the sand terminated the civilization of the city, it also preserved the city very well for people nowadays. When the city was unearthed in 1961, it very soon became the most beautiful ruins in the world.
Emin Minaret
Built in 1778 AD, the Emin Minaret is the largest tower in Xinjiang. The major material of the tower are black bricks, which form 15 patterns on the tower, including rivers, flowers and cattle. When you look up at the entrance of tower, you may think you are in a piece of exquisite local blanket.
Grape Valley
As we can know from its name, the Grape Valley is a kingdom of Grape. 90% part of the valley are grape fields. Unlike most parts in Xinjiang, the clime in the valley is wet and cool. That’s the reason why the grape is sweet and big in the valley. The local people built a grape museum for tourists to learn more about its grape culture.

Day 8  The Flaming Mountain
Bezeklik Grottoes
There are frescos in 40 of the 57 Bezeklik Grottoes. The frescos are mainly about Buddha and other Buddhis legends. It is amazing to see a Buddhist relic in an Islamic zone. Most of these grottoes were carved around 1000 years ago.
Flaming Mountain
As you may know from its name, the Flaming Mountain is very hot and its color is red. The highest air temperature in summer is 47.8 degrees centigrade, and the surface temperature is over 70 degrees centigrade. There is on plant on the mountain at all.

After today’s sightseeing, you will drive back to Urumqi.

Day 9  Fly to Kashgar

After today’s sightseeing in Urumqi, you will fly to Kashgar, the westernmost city in Xinjiang.

Heavenly Lake
Located in the north side of Bogda Shan, Xinjiang Province, Tianchi is also named as “Heavenly Lake”. It is about one hour’s drive from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province. The lake is surrounded by lofty mountains. Due to the light refraction, the water near the bank is green, while the part far away from the bank is blue.
Xinjiang Museum
Established in August 1959, Xinjiang Museum is situated in No.581, Xibei Road, Urumqi. It owns more than 37 thousand pieces of cultural relics, including 281 pieces of top relics, which enable to museum to be a top-class museum in China.

Day 10  Kashgar Ancient City
Abakh Khoja Tomb
The Abakh Khoja Tomb is known as the tomb of one imperial concubine. She was born in Kashgar and went to Beijing to marry an emperor in the 17th century. Most tourists come to the tomb to commemorate the imperial concubine. Her tomb looks like an Islamic palace.
Id Kah Mosque
The Id Kah Mosque was initially built in 1422 AD. It is one of the largest mosques in China. Around 3000 Muslims worship here every day. The magnificent halls are must-sees in the mosque.
Kashgar Ancient City
Kashgar Ancient City is the only existing ancient city along the silk road. The earliest introduction to ancient city was found on a book published 2100 years ago. Both Buddhist and Islamic relics can be found in this ancient city.

Day 11  Kashgar Bazar
Kashgar Bazar
With more than 2,000 years’ history, Kashgar Bazar is the largest international trade market in Northwest Region of China. Western and Chinese merchants traded their commodities here in ancient times. Nowadays, it is a souvenir market.

You will be transferred to the airport for your back flight after today’s sightseeing. Hope you had a good time in Xinjiang and Gansu, and wish you all the best in future.
