Hohhot Tours, Inner Mongolia Hohhot Tours 2025

A Hohhot Tour is the gateway to Inner Mongolia for the vast grassland & traditional nomad life.

As the Capital of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot is located between the Yinshan Mountains, a natural boundary between agriculture & animal husbandry, and the Yellow River. Hohhot is about a 3-hour high-speed train journey from Beijing (1.5 hours’ bullet train from Datong, Shanxi). You can reach Hohhot with convenient flights from major cities in China, Ulan Bator in Mongolia & Chita in Russia. Then, within a 2-hour drive, you can reach Huitengxile Grassland & Xilamuren Grassland to enjoy nomadic life.

A Hohhot Tour to discover the Historic Figures & Capitals bridging the Grassland & Central Plains.

✨Hohhot, meaning "Green City" in Mongolian, was named by Alatan Khan (俺答汗; 1508-1582), who started a new era of friendship between the Han and Mongolian. He used blue-green stones from Daqing Mountain in the Yinshan Mountains to build the city walls of his capital in 1581. Visit Dazhao Temple for more.

✨Shengle of Hohhot, once the First Capital of the renowned Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), was founded by Emperor Tuoba Gui (拓跋珪) of the Xianbei ethnic group. This made Hohhot a unique grassland capital before being relocated to Datong, Luoyang & Xi'an in the Central Plains. Visit Inner Mongolia Museum for more.

✨Hohhot was the destination of Zhaojun Chu Sai (昭君出塞). Zhaojun (Western Han Dynasty; 206 BC-24 AD) was one of the four most beautiful women in ancient China. She volunteered to marry the Xiongnu Emperor to establish peace between the Han and Xiongnu (Central Plains and Grassland). Visit Zhaojun Tomb for more.

Today, Hohhot is renowned as the Dairy Capital of China due to the headquarters of China's dairy giants, Mengniu and Yili (visit their factories for more). Now, Hohhot Tours are increasingly popular among travelers seeking diverse experiences, including breathtaking landscapes, thrilling outdoor adventures, authentic Mongolian cuisine, and rich historical exploration.

    2. When is the best time to visit Hohhot and the grasslands?
    icon
Late May to September is ideal. Summer (June–August) offers lush grasslands, the Naadam Festival, and mild weather (15–28°C). Autumn (September) has golden landscapes and fewer crowds.
The best time to visit Hohhot and especially the grasslands is from mid-July to early September. During this period, the grasslands are at their most vibrant and green, the weather is pleasant with comfortable temperatures (around 15°C to 25°C on the grasslands), and you might even catch the famous Naadam Festival, which usually takes place in July or August.
If you prefer to avoid the peak crowds, May, June, September, and early October also offer good weather for city sightseeing, though the grasslands might not be as lush in May.
If you're interested in winter activities, visiting from December to February allows you to experience ice and snow festivals.

Be adventurous and try the local flavors!
Hand-Grabbed Mutton (手把肉): Tender boiled mutton eaten with your hands, served with wild onion dip. Minimal seasoning lets the meat’s natural flavor shine.
Buuz (Mongolian Dumplings): Steamed dumplings filled with meat, often served with fermented mare's milk.
Roast Whole Lamb (烤全羊): A traditional Mongolian feast, perfect for groups. Succulent whole lamb slow-roasted over an open fire, seasoned with cumin and local herbs. A centerpiece at festive gatherings.
Mongolian Milk Tea (奶茶): Savory, salty tea brewed with milk, butter, and roasted millet. A staple of nomadic life. Pair with fried milk skin or cheese.

Our Family's Confucius Lesson

I'll admit, I was nervous about taking my kids (ages 8 and 11) on a tour focused on Confucius. I had visions of them getting bored by endless history and ancient temples. But our trip to Qufu was the complete opposite—it was engaging, fun, and one of the most memorable trips we've taken as a family.

I really want to thank my guide Zoey. She was a patient historian in Qufu, making Confucius's story accessible and interesting for our children.

And we also head to Baotu Spring. My daughter kept saying it looked like the water was "boiling from the earth," and she wasn't wrong! It felt truly magical. Daming Lake was just as enchanting, vast and serene, exactly like a scene from an ancient painting. We rented a small boat and paddled around, and the kids felt like true explorers discovering a new world.

My Charming Qingdao Getaway

I just spent a few wonderful days exploring Qingdao, and it was the perfect coastal retreat, unlike any other city I've visited in China. From the moment I arrived, the city charmed me with its clean sea breeze, amazing Laoshan mountain, and the Tsingtao beer. It felt both relaxed and full of character.

The hotel was situated in a prime location that made it easy to walk to both the historic sites and the beachfront. Everything was designed to be easy and relaxing.

Our guide, CoCo was absolutely wonderful. They had an intimate knowledge of the city’s dual German and Chinese history, which brought the architecture to life.

An Unforgettable Adventure Through Shandong

I recently finished a week-long tour of Shandong, and it was a profound experience that far exceeded my expectations. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by everything—from the red-roofed villas and blue seas of Qingdao to the rich Confucian atmosphere in Qufu. But the soul of the entire trip was undoubtedly the majestic Mount Taishan.

Our guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, sincere, and always attentive to everyone's needs. At the Confucius sites in Qufu, they brought the history to life, making the ancient buildings feel much more meaningful. And before our ascent of Mount Taishan, their detailed introduction filled us with a sense of reverence for this most sacred of China's five great mountains.

The ascent of Mount Taishan was absolutely the climax of the entire journey. We opted for the route of taking the scenic bus to the Midway. Hiking from Zhongtianmen to Nantian was still a challenge, but every step was worth it. Standing at the peak, looking out over the rolling mountains and the sea of clouds, you could truly feel the same sense of grandeur that ancient emperors must have felt during their pilgrimages.
