Departure Railway Station: Datong South Railway Station (大同南站)

All high-speed trains from Datong to Hohhot start their journey at Datong South Railway Station. This modern station sits about 13 kilometers away from downtown Datong. If you travel by car or taxi, the trip takes between 25 to 35 minutes.

  • Enter the station: Find the entrance marked “进站口” . Scan your passport at the gates or use the staff lane.
  • Security check: Place bags on the X-ray belt (like airports).
  • Wait in the hall: Check screens for your train number and waiting area.
  • Boarding: When your train shows "正在检票" (boarding) in green, go to your gate. Show passport again at the manual gate.
  • Walk to your platform: Follow signs to your platform. Trains usually board 15 minutes before departure.

Arrival Railway Stations: Hohhot Station & Hohhot East Station

Your train will arrive at either Hohhot East Station (most trains) or Hohhot Station (just 2 trains). Here's what you need to know:

Hohhot Station (呼和浩特站) is better - it's closer to downtown sights like the Dazhao Temple. Just 5km away (20 minutes by taxi). Bus 24 is direct from Hohhot Station to temple, and it needs 30-40 min.

Want a cheaper option? Try regular trains (K/Z trains). They're slower but have sleeper beds. There are about 13 daily trains, but avoid the 4 night trains (2:30–6:03 AM). Most depart in the afternoon from Datong Station (closest to downtown). The trip takes 3-3.5 hours.
