Day 1 Chengdu to Wolong | Chengdu Panda Base, Wolong Giant Panda Museum

In the morning, you will meet your guide early at the appointed time in your hotel lobby. Since pandas prefer cool weather and are more active in the morning, we advise you to arrive early at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (Chengdu Panda Base), located only about 17 kilometers away from the city center. This is the closest panda base around Chengdu for you fulfill your panda dream.

Chengdu Panda Base is the base with the largest population of captive giant pandas in the world, accommodating over 100 pandas of different ages. You can watch pandas playing, eating, climbing, sleeping, and in autumn, even see the pink newborn giant panda cubs in the Sunshine Nursery House and the Moonlight Nursery House. The mascot of the 31st Summer World University Games Chengdu 2021, Rongbao, is based on Panda Zhi Ma, who was born in 2017 at the Chengdu Panda Base. Besides giant pandas, the cute red pandas (rarer than giant pandas) at the Red Panda Playgrounds are also the highlight of the Chengdu Panda Base. Nowadays, the panda base has also become an urban birding spot for local birders and kids to search for Red-billed Leiothrix, Black-throated Tit, Chinese Blackbird, Spotted Dove, White-browed Laughingthrush, and more.

If you're interested, you can follow your guide to discover more about pandas' secrets through the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum, which is free to enter but requires advance reservation, and closed on Mondays.

After lunch, head for Wolong (Wolong Nature Reserve), which is located about 136 kilometers (2.5 hours drive) from the center of Chengdu. This is the closest Panda Habitat to Chengdu where you can hike in the real wild panda habitat and explore panda’s companion plants and animals, just like a ranger. Chengdu’s residents are fortunate that within just 2 to 3 hours of driving, they can go from the modern city (500m above sea level) to the beautiful natural habitat of the wild panda (2700m above sea level). From the plains to the plateau, it’s a unique experience to encounter different altitudes and seasons all in one day.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Wolong Giant Panda Museum, also known as the Wolong Nature and Earthquake Museum. The museum is located in Wolong Town, Wenchuan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. In the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the museum suffered heavy damage and was later supported and rebuilt by Hong Kong. The museum has numerous exhibits, including 220 specimens of mammals and birds, 240 plant specimens, and 700 insect specimens, as well as 1,240 exhibition panels, and a vast collection of simulated rare plants such as the Dove Tree, Water fir, and Arrow bamboo. At the museum, you can learn not only about how earthquakes occur and how to prevent and evade them but also about the past and future of giant pandas. You will discover that the giant panda, an "umbrella species", has provided a safe and powerful protection umbrella for many companion animals and plants.

Finally, go back to your hotel for a good rest. Overnight in Wolong town. If there is time you can stroll on the Old Street and get more idea about local minorities such as Tibetan people and Qiang people. Also you won’t miss the stories about Shoumoren (守貘人), an ancient nation that protects giant pandas.

Kind Reminds:
1. It is good to avoid altitude sickness by slowing down, keeping warm, drinking water frequently, avoiding showers for the first one or two days, taking it easy, and sleeping well.
2. You should always follow your doctor's advice regarding altitude based on your health condition.
3. Be sure to let your guide or the hotel staff know whenever you feel unwell or need help. The people there are always willing to help and are good at dealing with altitude sickness.

Day 2 Wolong Panda Volunteer Tour, transfer to Dujiangyan | Wolong Panda Base, Qingcheng Kung Fu Lesson

In the morning, you will meet your guide at the appointed time in the lobby of your hotel. The Panda Volunteer Program starts at 8:30 am, so we will depart before 8:00 for Wolong Panda Base, which is approximately 25 kilometers (0.5 hours drive) away from your hotel. Located in Wolong Nature Reserve, this is a Panda Volunteer Base with fewer people, where you can fulfill your dream of being a panda keeper in the panda’s natural habitat.

The Wolong Panda Base is located in Gengda Town of the Wolong Nature Reserve. The base is at an altitude of 1,700 meters (wild giant pandas usually live in high mountain valleys between 1,400 and 3,600 meters above sea level), surrounded by green mountains, clear water, blue sky, and cool climate, which is the original habitat of giant pandas. The base is divided into three areas: the Shenshuping Giant Panda Breeding and Visiting Area, the Captive Giant Panda Wilderness Training Area, and the Wild Release Area. It is a world-class giant panda research center that integrates giant panda breeding, research, training, release, public education, and high-end scientific observation. Currently, the Giant Panda Breeding and Visiting Area is open to the public. It has 59 giant panda enclosures, which can accommodate 60-80 pandas and are divided into three parts: adult giant panda area, sub-adult giant panda area, and panda kindergarten.

The Wolong Panda Base is home to around 74 giant pandas, with more pandas than people. Not only can you capture photos of these lovely creatures from the best angles in each enclosure, but you can also enjoy the stunning natural scenery of Wolong. It is known as the best place in the world to observe giant pandas. Here, you can quietly watch pandas climb trees, roll around, eat, play, laze around, and fight. In the panda kindergarten, you can witness baby pandas and panda keepers engaging in intelligence games. You will see the baby pandas clutching onto the legs of their caretakers, just like children who want their parents to hold them.

In the winter, you can see pandas playing in the snow and rolling around like the real Bing Dun Dun, the official mascot of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Giant pandas have thick fur and are highly resistant to cold. Wolong is the original habitat of giant pandas, and it snows here every winter. The average annual temperature is 22°C, and the highest temperature in summer is 29°C. Wolong Panda Base is an ideal place to escape the summer heat and enjoy the snow. Don't forget to look for the star pandas, oversea returnee pandas, and their stories!

What does a Panda Volunteer do? Upon arrival at the Wolong Panda Base, you need to sign a safety agreement and receive a volunteer work card, clothes, and gloves. After a safety training session, you will officially become a panda poop scooper who picks up panda feces, adds fresh bamboo, and cleans the panda enclosures. Under the guidance of the professional panda keeper, you will visit various panda enclosures, observe the behavior of the giant pandas, and learn about the stories behind different pandas. You will also have the opportunity to learn about panda cake recipes and make panda cake. After watching the panda nanny feeding and training the pandas, it will be time to feed yourself at the panda nanny's canteen. Finally, you will receive your Panda Volunteer Certificate, take a group photo, and return your work card. (Note: Depending on the physical condition of the pandas, the specific activity schedule will follow instructions from the base’s panda keepers and may be subject to some changes.)

To become a processional panda fan, here is a list of Panda Stars that live in Wolong Panda Base for your reference:

1. Tai Shan (oversea returnee panda) is a male panda born in 2005 at National Zoological Park. Tai Shan was the first giant panda to be born and survive in the United States National Zoo in Washington. His birth sparked a nationwide fascination with pandas, and the zoo held a naming contest for him. Over 200,000 people participated in the vote, and "Tai Shan" was ultimately chosen. Tai Shan is one of China's five sacred mountains, and the name was chosen to convey good wishes from both Chinese and foreign friends for Tai Shan's future. Tai Shan was supposed to return to China in July 2007, but due to strong requests from the US, China agreed to extend his stay for two more years. To celebrate this extension, April 24th was declared "Panda Day" in Washington. On January 30th, 2010, the American people bid farewell to Tai Shan in Washington's National Zoo amidst snow and wind. Every year, many friends and fans from all over the world come to visit him, making Tai Shan the most popular giant panda in the world.

2. Bao Bao, (oversea returnee panda) is a female panda born in 2013 at National Zoological Park. Bao Bao comes from a prestigious family, with parents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, who are giant pandas living in the United States. Her brother Tai Shan is the world's most popular giant panda superstar, and her name was chosen through an online voting campaign sponsored by the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., the Chinese embassy in the United States, and the US embassy in China. The name "Bao Bao" means "precious" or "treasure" in English. On January 18, 2014, Bao Bao made her public debut and attracted crowds of visitors to the National Zoo, including local residents who don't normally visit the zoo and panda fans who drove for nine hours just to see her. As a popular star at the National Zoo, Bao Bao brought joy to countless American families. In February 2017, the National Zoo held a farewell event for Bao Bao, and she returned to her hometown in China on February 21, 2017 via the "FedEx Panda Express."

3. Hai Zi is a female panda born in 1994 and was rescued from the wild in Sichuan Province. Hai Zi set the record for the oldest age at which a giant panda gave birth and the oldest age at which a giant panda gave birth to twins. In the spring of 2019, she began exhibiting typical mating behaviors such as reduced appetite, playing in water, seeking shade, and seeking a mate. Given her good health, typical mating behavior, and high genetic value, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda had the best breeding and medical technology, and there was a successful instance of a 22-year-old giant panda giving birth previously. Therefore, the center decided to arrange a mate for her at the appropriate time. On April 5, 2019, Hai Zi hit it off with You Bao and had a successful natural mating, despite their significant age difference. After a gestation period of nearly four months, Hai Zi successfully gave birth to twin panda cubs. Hai Zi is a gentle, loving, and patient mother who never gets angry at her cubs, no matter how much they bother her, and always plays with them patiently.

4. Qiao Qiao is a female panda born in 2009 and was rescued from the wild in Sichuan Province. Qiao Qiao is the second giant panda, after Cao Cao, to be successfully introduced and give birth in the wild as part of the reintroduction program launched in 2017. Her twin cubs are the world's first giant panda cubs to be born in the wild as part of a reintroduction program. Qiao Qiao's successful birth of twins through reintroduction once again demonstrates the professionalism and scientific nature of the technical strength of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, as well as the scientific validity and feasibility of giant panda reintroduction in the wild. The success of reintroduction can not only achieve blood exchange between captive and wild populations but also play a positive role in the revitalization of wild giant panda populations and the construction of giant panda national parks, thus promoting the development of giant panda conservation in China. At the same time, it provides new ideas and methods for the reintroduction and conservation of other rare and endangered large mammals, including giant pandas.

5. He He (male) and Mei Mei (female) are pandas born in 2018 at Wolong Hetaoping Base of China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The twin siblings He He and Mei Mei, a boy-girl pair, are the world's first giant pandas born in the wild as part of a reintroduction program, and their mother is Cao Cao, the first giant panda successfully reintroduced into the wild. Their birth is another breakthrough success for captive giant panda reintroduction in the wild after the successful birth of a reintroduced giant panda in 2017 by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, which has attracted global attention. They have also been certified by the Guinness World Records as the first surviving twin pandas born through captive giant panda reintroduction in the wild. The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda named the panda cubs He He and Mei Mei after the panda characters in the domestic high-quality animated works "Panda and Mole" and "Animal Chorus," which imply harmony, beauty, coexistence, and endless vitality. The groundbreaking cooperation between the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and CCTV Animation Co., Ltd. also aims to explore and attempt a new approach to public education and cultural communication related to giant pandas by creatively integrating virtual animated images and physical panda images.

6. Wen Wen (female) and Chuan Chuan (male) are pandas born in 2019 at Wolong Shenshuping Base of China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Their names are derived from the name of Wenchuan County. It represents the gratitude of the people of Wenchuan for the help provided by the world during the reconstruction after the 2018 earthquake. Wen Wen and Chuan Chuan have taken on the important mission of developing the giant panda conservation work in Wenchuan. Wenchuan is the hometown of giant pandas. For thousands of years, the diligent and honest people of Wenchuan and the giant pandas have coexisted harmoniously in the Qionglai Mountains in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. According to the Fourth National Giant Panda Survey, Wenchuan (Wolong) in Sichuan province has 165 wild giant pandas, ranking first in the world, with 148,000 hectares of wild giant panda habitat. The Wolong Nature Reserve is located in Wenchuan County, and Wenchuan also holds an annual "Panda Festival" for giant pandas. Now, Wen Wen and Chuan Chuan have become the "darlings" of Wenchuan that cannot be ignored.

7. Bing Bing is a female panda born in 2015 at Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base. Bing Bing (meaning “Ice”) has a twin brother named Qing Qing (meaning “Indigo” in Chinese). The names "Bing Bing" and "Qing Qing" not only refer to the saying “Indigo is derived from blue but is more pleasing than blue; ice is formed out of the water but is colder than water”, but also allude to the legend of Li Bing (the same "Bing" as Bing Bing) building the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and guarding Qingcheng Mountain (the same "Qing" as Qing Qing). Qing Qing is a popular internet celebrity, known for his love of rolling in water ditches since he was a cub, earning him the nickname "Man Yue Mei"(蔓越莓Coal Ball) by netizens. Bing Bing also get a nickname as “Tang Tang”(碳碳 Coal). When talking about these two siblings, we cannot fail to mention their caretaker, Yang, who is affectionately referred to as "Dad Yang" by the pandas. Typically, as pandas grow up, they become less inclined to let caretakers get close to them. However, these two siblings always stick to Yang, allowing him to pet them and even exercise with him. Like his brother, Bing Bing, who is over 8 years old, has also reached reproductive age. Under the breeding plan of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, Bing Bing will make his own contribution to the development of the giant panda population.

Day 3 Chengdu World Heritage Tour | Kung Fu Panda Village - Mt Qingcheng, Dujiangyan Irrigation System

In the morning, it's time to visit the Mount Qingcheng, a world natural and cultural heritage, which is only one hour's drive from Chengdu. In addition to the breath-taking natural scenery, this place is also known for its Chinese Kung Fu - Qingcheng martial arts (Qingcheng Kung Fu).

Mount Qingcheng is also one of the cradles of Taoism. The founder of Taoism, Zhao Daoling (25–220), believed that the tranquil and serene natural scenery of Mount Qingcheng was suitable for the development and prosperity of Taoism. Therefore, it is considered the birthplace of Taoism. The Qingcheng mountain range has 36 peaks, which stand in a circle like an ancient wall protecting a city. With green trees growing on the mountains all year round, it is called Mount Qingcheng - "Green City Wall Mountains"("Qing" means "green" in Chinese and "Cheng" means "city"). Mt. Qingcheng is like a "Wall of Hills" protecting Panda Valley.

As you may know, Mount Qingcheng is the inspiration for the Kung Fu Panda Movies. In Kung Fu Panda 2, the gate of Mount Qingcheng was depicted in the Valley of Peace. In Kung Fu Panda 3, when Po reunites with his biological father Li Shan and his fellow pandas, we see Panda Village, which is hidden in the Qingcheng Mountains like a utopia. Why Kung Fu Panda filmmakers choose Mount Qingcheng as the Panda Village? To create a visually stunning setting that was culturally significant with Taoism and Chinese culture, the found that Mount Qingcheng provided the perfect backdrop for the story. They also incorporated elements of traditional Chinese architecture and design into the village, such as the ornate roofs and red lanterns, to further emphasize the cultural significance of the location. In addition to its cultural significance, Mount Qingcheng is also home to several endangered species, including the giant panda.

As the closest and greatest mountain for hiking near Chengdu, Mount Qingcheng offers a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs. Welcome to hiking in the Kung Fu Panda Po’s Panda Village. During the hike, you can explore the Taoist temples, waterfalls, streams, and forests. To reach the summit, you can take a sightseeing car to the entrance, then walk for 20 minutes to the cable car station near Yuecheng Lake (optional ferry available) to go up (a 5-minute cable car ride). From there, it takes about 1 hour to hike to the summit or about 3-4 hours to hike the entire way on foot. During the hike, you can explore Tianshi Celestial Cave (famous for the 1000-year-old ginkgo tree planted by the founder of Taoism), Shangqing Palace (the biggest Taoist temple in Qingcheng), and Lao Jun Ge Pagoda (best spot to view the summit of Mt. Qingcheng). The hike down takes about 2 hours (optional cable car ride available). If time permit, don’t miss the Jianfu Palace, located near the entrance, which was originally constructed in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Local people like to have a cup of tea there on weekends. Although the palace looks ordinary from the outside, red lanterns hang all over the palace, making it a surprise when entering, especially under the contrast of the green trees in and around the palace.

In the afternoon, head to another world heritage site, Dujiangyan Irrigation System, to unveil the brilliant water dam that has benefited the Chengdu people for over 2,200 years. Built in 256 BC, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System is still in use today. It not only controls flooding on the Min River but also irrigates farms and provides water resources for more than 50 cities around Chengdu. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is the oldest and only surviving no-dam irrigation system in the world, which made the Chengdu Plain free of flooding and allowed its people to live peacefully and prosperously. That is why Chengdu is called the “Land of Abundance” (Tian Fu Zhi Guo, which means “Nature's Storehouse”) today.

By visiting the Dujiangyan Irrigation System’s three important parts, namely Yuzui (Fish Mouth Dividing Dyke), Feishayan (Flying Sand Spillway), and Baopingkou (Precious Bottleneck Inlet), you can understand and marvel at the ancient people’s wisdom in fighting against floods and making good use of the natural resources. You can also visit the Erwang Temple, Fulong Temple, and Anlan Suspension Bridge (crossing the Minjiang River) to listen to stories about Libing (the one who built the Dujiangyan Irrigation System), Libing’s legendary son, the couple who built the bridge. Each year, many people also flock to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System for its activities, such as the Temple Fair held from June 24th to June 26th in the Chinese lunar calendar and the Releasing Water Festival on Tomb Sweeping Day.

Day 4 Classic Panda City Tour | Kuangzhai Alley, Renmin Park, Taikoo Li, Daci Temple, Jinli Street

In the morning, you can explore Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alley). As a must-visit tourist destination in Chengdu, Kuanzhai Alley represents the old Chengdu and embodies the leisurely lifestyle cherished by the Chengdu people. Formerly known as Kuanzhai Hutong, it was built in 1718 by Nian Gengyao (1679-1726), a General of the Qing Dynasty (the elder brother of Consort Hua in "Legend of Concubine Zhen Huan"). Kuanzhai Alley served as the military camp and residential area for the Eight Banners. As you walk along the three parallel old-style streets and courtyards - Kuan Alley (Wide Alley), Zhai Alley (Narrow Alley), and Jin Alley (Well Alley) - you can imagine how, 300 years ago, officials resided in Kuan Alley, soldiers lived in Zhai Alley, and commoners and townsfolk inhabited Jin Alley. Today, Kuanzhai Alley not only reflects the history of Chengdu as an ancient yet vibrant city but also symbolizes the treasured memories of Chengdu locals. There are all kinds of Chengdu snacks, folk arts and crafts nightclubs, and coffee shops which make it one of the most active places in Chengdu. Also, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Panda Post in KuanZhai Alley. It is great to send a panda card to your friend from the panda hometown.

After that, it's time to take a leisurely stroll inside Chengdu Renmin Park (Chengdu People's Park), which is located 800m away from Kuanzhai Alley. You can watch locals square dancing, practicing Ta Chi, singing Chinese folk songs, playing traditional Chinese musical instruments, as well as playing Chinese chess and boating on the lake. Don’t miss the blind date corner (a marriage market) where parents of unmarried adults flock to the park to find a partner for their daughter or son. Then, order a cup of fragrant jasmine green tea (a favorite of Chengdu locals) while sitting in a time-honored tea house, such as Heming Tea House. Also in the tea house you will have the chance to see the traditional Kung Fu Tea ceremony. Chat with your friends, try Chengdu Ear Cleaning by professional ear cleaner, and see locals having fun playing mahjong.

After lunch, revel in a leisurely stroll down Chunxi Road, you will sure be attracted by the huge "climbing panda" on the rooftop of Chengdu IFS. The Chengdu IFS Panda (I AM HERE Panda Statue) is a popular internet-famous photo spot loved by the public. "Under the giant panda's butt" is also a well-known "secret code" for many people. This whimsical juxtaposition elegantly captures Chengdu's blend of old and new. Afterwards, meander through the bustling lanes of Taikoo Li Chengdu, a harmonious fusion of global and local influences. Browse lavish boutiques showcasing luxury brands while soaking in the vibrant energy of this chic shopping district. Visit the 1300-year-old Daci Temple, hidden amidst the modern cityscape. Stroll peacefully through the grounds, order a cup of tea, and find your own inner quiet in the heart of the bustling city.

When the sun sets, the nightlife on Jinli Street becomes even more charming. Known as the "Chengdu Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival Scroll" and ranked at the top of the world's most beautiful streets by CNN Travel in 2021, Jinli Street was first built during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280) and was then known as "Shu Jinli". “Shu” refers to the Shu Kingdom (221-263) in Chinese, “Jin” means brocade, and ”Li” means street and alley. Indeed, Jinli was an ancient street that mainly produced and sold brocades 1,800 years ago. As time passed, Jinli gradually developed into a commercial center in the old city area of Chengdu. While modeled after the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", it also became one of the representatives of Chengdu's culture and history. Walking on Jinli Street, you can appreciate the brilliant Chinese Traditional buildings of Qing Dynasty style (1616-1911), buy all kinds of souvenirs (Shu embroidery, lacquer products, folk handicrafts, calligraphy, and paintings), try delicious local snacks (Dan Dan Noodles, Egg Pancake, Bon Bon Chicken, Sweet Potato Noodles with Pork Intestines, Iced Jelly, Sour and Spicy Tofu Pudding), and discover intangible heritages like Sugar Painting, Shadow Puppy Play, Sichuan Opera Show...

Then, it is time to end your 4-day 4 Days Ultimate Panda Tour for Panda Fan (Chengdu - Wolong - Dujiangyan) . Your guide will escort you to your hotel or the airport/train station for your flight or high speed train to your next destination. Thank you for choosing Asia Odyssey Travel for your Chengdu tour, and we are always here working for you and hope to see you again for your next trip around China/Asia.

Transportation
In a private tour, it means you will transfer to the tourist attractions in one city by private vehicle. The private car we selected is spacious, comfortable and air-conditioned. And the driver we use are very experienced. As for traveling between two destinations, we use domestic flights (economy seat) or high speed trains (second class seat, usually less than 6 hours). The local guides and drivers will pick you up at the airport/train stations, and escort you to the hotel.
Meals
“B” stands for breakfast. You will have it at your hotel in the morning.
“L” stands for lunch. The restaurants we will arrange for you are all designated tourist restaurants approved by local tourist administration bureau. All are in good sanitary conditions. Your guide will assist you with ordering the dishes.
“D” means dinner. All dinners are excluded in the itinerary. You have the chance to taste some authentic Chinese food and local snacks.
If you have special dietary requirements (vegetarian, halal, kosher, Indian, or gluten-free), please let us know before your booking. We will try our best to take care of you.

The time of our life in Beijing!
Martin helped us customize our trip to Beijing. Bruce spoke great English. Our driver kept us safe through our travels. We took the bullet train from Shanghai to Beijing. Our 4 hour trip turned into 6 due to a snowstorm but Bruce greeted us as we stepped off the train. He was the perfect gentleman carrying our bags navigating our way through the train station. He took us to a delicious restaurant. We went to Tienanmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, a pearl boutique and an acrobatic show. Bruce taught us so much about Chinese history. It was truly fascinating. Day 2 Bruce met us in our hotel lobby. We went to a jade boutique, the Great Wall of China, and a tea room. It was all amazing. We flew to Chengdu to see the pandas and Martin met us at our hotel. It was such a nice surprise and to put a face to the messaging. I highly recommend booking a tour with them.

Excellent trip to Tibet in Dec 2023
Our tour began in Chengdu. The agency helped us book a train to Lhasa, and arranged for a driver and English-speaking tour guide in Lhasa and Nyingchi. The hotels chosen were good, and the scenery was simply breathtaking. Thank you to Anthony at the agency for making the planning and booking process so smooth!
