Day 1 Shanghai Arrival | Pick-up Service & Hotel Check-in

Welcome to Shanghai, China's most cosmopolitan city where ancient heritage meets cutting-edge modernity! Your adventure begins in this vibrant metropolis known for its spectacular skyline, colonial architecture, and dynamic cultural scene.

Upon arrival at Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao Airport, your local guide and driver will meet you at the arrival hall and escort you to your downtown hotel. After checking in at your downtown hotel, you'll have free time to arrange at your own pace for the rest of the day—here are our tailored suggestions to help you enjoy Shanghai easily, whether you want to adjust to jet lag or start exploring:

Daytime recommended activities: You could wander Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street—browse local boutiques, sample tasty street snacks like sugar-coated haws, or relax in a riverside café; stroll the outer lanes of Yu Garden to get a preview of traditional Hui-style architecture (you’ll visit the garden proper tomorrow); or head to Lujiazui to snap photos of the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower, a vivid contrast to The Bund’s old-world vibe.

Evening recommended activities: Don't miss a leisurely walk along The Bund - you'll love the illuminated colonial buildings lining the waterfront. For an even more memorable experience, we suggest an optional Huangpu River cruise: it lets you take in both The Bund’s classic architecture and Pudong’s futuristic skyscrapers from the water, a perfect way to end your first day in the city.

Day 2 Shanghai Half-day Tour | Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden, & High-speed Train to Huangshan

Today’s journey dives into Shanghai’s cultural duality—from ancient art treasures in a modern landmark to time-honored gardens .

Morning: Shanghai Museum East & Yu Garden

Your morning starts at the Shanghai Museum East —the city's newest cultural landmark, which opened with a modern glass-and-steel design that contrasts beautifully with its ancient collections . Unlike the classic People’s Square branch, the East Wing focuses on China’s ancient art history, with 8 permanent galleries spanning bronzes, calligraphy, ceramics, and more.

Must-see treasures (highlight of the visit):

Da Ke Ding (Big Ke Tripod): a bronze food vessel over 3,000 years old,  201.5kg Western Zhou bronze masterpiece, one of China’s "Top 3 Bronze Treasures." Its 290-character inscriptions record royal rewards and land systems, making it a "bronze history book" .

Jin Hou Su Bells: ancient musical instrument,1046 BC - 771 BC,16 chime bells with 355 characters of text, documenting a Western Zhou military campaign. They were reunited here in 2024 after decades of separation, and their sound still resonates with history .

Shang Yang Square Measure: a square bronze capacity measure made by Shang Yang, 390 BC - 338 BC, a pivotal bronze artifact—its inscriptions prove the standardization of weights during China's first legal reform, linking ancient governance to modern systems.

Late Morning to Afternoon: Yu Garden & Culinary Exploration

After immersing in art, take a short drive to the Yu Garden (YuYuan), a splendid example of a classical Chinese Ming-dynasty garden (built in 1559). Stroll through its serene landscape of pavilions, rockeries, ponds, and ancient trees—a peaceful oasis in the heart of the bustling city.

The tour concludes at the adjacent Yu Garden Bazaar (Old City God's Temple Area), a vibrant marketplace with traditional architecture. Here, you are free to explore, shop, and enjoy lunch on your own. We recommend savoring local snacks like the famous Nanxiang Steamed Buns (Xiaolongbao), pan-fried pork buns, or sticky sweet rice balls.

Afternoon High-speed Train Journey:

In the afternoon, transfer to the railway station for your high-speed train to Huangshan (approx. 2.5-3 hours). Settle into your comfortable seat and watch as the urban sprawl of Shanghai gives way to a captivating panorama of the Yangtze River Delta. The scenery gradually transforms from a flat tapestry of farmland and canals, through the gentle hills and classic waterside villages of Jiangnan, into the densely forested foothills of Anhui Province—a visual prelude to the mountain grandeur that awaits.

Upon arrival at Huangshan North Station, your local guide will greet you and escort you to your hotel near the base of the mountain.

Your Destination: Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)

Welcome to the realm of Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site revered for centuries as the "loveliest mountain of China." Renowned for its four natural wonders—legendary granite peaks, peculiarly shaped pine trees, a spectacular sea of clouds, and rejuvenating hot springs—Huangshan has been an eternal muse for poets, painters, and travelers alike. The evening is free for you to rest, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and anticipate tomorrow's ascent into this living landscape of classical beauty and awe.

Day 3 Yellow Mountain | Back Mountain/Yungu Cableway, Scenic Hiking & Mountain-Top Accommodation

Official Hiking Route: Yungu Cableway → Begin-to-Believe Peak → Dispelling Cloud Pavilion → West Sea Grand Canyon → Bright Summit → Flying-over Rock

Walking Distance: Approximately 7-9 km / 5-6 hours (with moderate rest stops for photography and acclimation; the pace can be adjusted based on your energy level)

Today focuses on Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s Five Sacred Mountains, renowned for its "Five Natural Wonders": ancient pines, grotesque granite peaks, winter snow, hot springs, and the ever-shifting sea of clouds. For centuries, it has inspired Chinese art, literature, and landscape paintings.

After breakfast, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel lobby. We’ll drive to the foot of Huangshan. To save energy and maximize your time on the summit, a sightseeing bus will take you directly from the back mountain foot to Yungu Temple. Here, you'll board the Yungu Cableway to White Goose Ridge Station – an 8-minute ascent offering breathtaking aerial views: endless green forests below, granite peaks, and twisted pines veiled in wispy mist. The air turns cooler and crisper upon arrival, signaling the start of your mountain trek.

Your trek begins with a journey to Begin-to-Believe Peak. Along the way, admire Huangshan’s iconic pines – such as Black Tiger Pine and Harp Pine – each with a distinct shape and legendary backstory. Upon reaching Begin-to-Believe Peak, the panoramic views of jagged cliffs, deep valleys, and mist-kissed rocks will make you understand its name: here, you’ll truly believe in the mountain’s mystical allure. After soaking in the scenery, hike for about 40 minutes to your mountain-top hotel for a break and lunch.

Post-lunch, embark on the highlight of the day: exploring the West Sea Grand Canyon. Stepping into this canyon feels like wandering through a classical Chinese ink painting, with countless peculiar rock formations and towering boulders surrounding you, while Huangshan pines cling to the cliffs in myriad graceful poses. The hike can be tailored to your condition: a 2-hour round trip reaches the 1st Ring, while a 2.5-hour expedition extends to the 2nd Ring.

Note: The trails here are rugged and physically demanding; the canyon is usually closed in cold weather or heavy snow.

After exiting the canyon, choose your sunset viewing spot. Dispelling Cloud Pavilion lives up to its name – mists often clear here, offering unobstructed views of the sunset, sea of clouds, and deep valleys; it’s a 30-minute walk back to the hotel. For a more rewarding experience, trek to Bright Summit (1,840m), Huangshan’s second-highest peak, where the sunset over the mountain range is truly spectacular. If time and energy permit, extend your hike by an hour to the Sky Sea Scenic Area to see Flying-over Rock – a 360-ton boulder standing 12 meters high, seemingly balanced precariously on a narrow base. After sunset, it’s a 40-minute walk back to your mountain-top hotel.

Good to Know:

  • Pack Light: With extensive walking, carry only essentials.
  • Toiletries: For environmental protection, some mountain hotels don’t provide disposable toiletries – it's better to bring your own.
  • Mountain Accommodation: Staying on the mountain lets you enjoy sunrise and a sea of clouds, but facilities are limited due to high transportation costs. Rooms may be slightly humid (due to mountain moisture), and star-rated hotels here don’t match big-city standards – we’ll select the most comfortable option available.

Day 4 Huangshan Tour | Sunrise & Hongcun/Tunxi Ancient Town

Morning Hiking Route: Sunrise Viewing Spot → Liming Pavilion (Dawn Pavilion) → Qingliang Terrace (Cool Terrace) → Houzi Guan Hai (Monkey Watching the Sea) → Tianzi Peak (Lion Peak) → Yungu Cableway

Start your day early to catch one of Huangshan's most magical sights – a sunrise over the sea of clouds. Your guide will wake you up in time (depending on the season) and lead you to a nearby viewing spot with unobstructed views.

Walking Distance: Approximately 3 km / 2 hours (leisurely pace with plenty of photo stops)

"Monkey Watching the Sea" is one of Huangshan's most famous rock formations – from a specific angle, it looks like a monkey sitting on a cliff, gazing at the sea of clouds below. Your guide will point out the best viewing position and share the local legend behind the rock. After hiking to Tianzi Peak (Lion Peak), we'll take the Yungu Cableway down the mountain to meet our driver.

After lunch near the mountain entrance, we'll drive to Hongcun Ancient Village (about 1 hours away). This well-preserved village was built in the Song Dynasty and is famous for its Hui-style architecture – white walls, black tiles, and intricate wood carvings. Walk through narrow stone lanes, visit a traditional Hui family home (where you can try making local rice cakes with the villagers), and admire the village's central "Moon Pond" – which inspired scenes from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Learn about ancient rural life, from how villagers used well water to how traditional festivals are celebrated.

In the late afternoon, we'll drive to Tunxi Old Street (about 30 minutes from Hongcun), a 1,200-meter-long pedestrian street lined with century-old shops selling Huangshan specialties like ink brushes, tea (Huangshan Maofeng is a famous green tea), and hand-carved souvenirs. Wander at your own pace, sample local snacks like stinky mandarin fish (a Huangshan delicacy) or sweet osmanthus wine, and pick up small gifts for friends back home.

We will then check into our hotel in Huangshan City for a comfortable night's rest.

Dining Suggestions (Meals are on your own):

To complete your cultural immersion, we highly recommend trying the local Hui Cuisine for dinner. Known for its meticulous use of wild herbs, bamboo shoots, and tender braised meats, it offers a delightful and savory taste of the Anhui region.

For the Adventurous: Seek out the local delicacy, "Stinky Mandarin Fish" (臭鳜鱼). Despite its pungent aroma, it's a celebrated dish with firm, flavorful flesh, and a true test of a food explorer's mettle!

For a Milder Palate: You can't go wrong with classic dishes like "Braised Bamboo Shoots with Ham" or "Huangshan Steamed Stone Chicken", which are hearty and flavorful without being overpowering.

Day 5 Huangshan - Changsha - Zhangjiajie | High-speed Train Transfers

Today's journey to Zhangjiajie involves a long-distance transfer via two segments of high-speed train, which is the most efficient overland option. We have carefully planned the route and timing to ensure a smooth experience with a comfortable break during the layover.

Your guide will escort you to Huangshan North Station for your morning departure. The first train will bring you to the major transit hub of Changsha South Station.

During the layover (approximately 1 hour), you will have ample time for a relaxed, self-paid lunch within the spacious and modern Changsha South Station, which offers a variety of dining options. Afterwards, you will board your second high-speed train for the scenic journey to Zhangjiajie West Station.

The total travel time, including the transfer and lunch, is typically under 8 hours. You will arrive at Zhangjiajie West Station in the late afternoon, where your local guide will be waiting to welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.

After checking in, the rest of the evening is free for you to relax. We recommend a stroll through Xibu Old Street (a 5-minute walk from most Wulingyuan hotels)—a lively pedestrian area with traditional Tujia ethnic architecture, street performers, and snack stalls. Try local specialties like Tujia tofu pudding or grilled corn, and watch artisans craft hand-woven textiles.

Option Transfer: Please note that this is our standard and recommended routing. Should you prefer to explore alternative transfer options, such as arranging private road transport or adjusting the itinerary, please contact us in advance. We would be happy to discuss a customized solution tailored to your preferences, though additional costs may apply.

Day 6 Zhangjiajie National Forest Park | Bailong Elevator, Hallelujah Mountain & Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve

Today is dedicated to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration for the floating mountains in Avatar: The Last Airbender. We've designed the day to highlight the park's most iconic attractions while keeping the pace manageable.

After breakfast, we'll enter the park via the Wulingyuan Gate and take a shuttle bus to the Bailong Elevator (Hundred Dragons Elevator) – a marvel of engineering that climbs 326 meters up the side of a sheer cliff. The elevator's glass walls offer stunning views of the surrounding quartz sandstone pillars as you ascend, with the "floating" mountains below creating a breathtaking sight.

Once at the top, we'll hike to Hallelujah Mountain (Avatar Mountain) – the exact peak that inspired the movie's floating Hallelujah Mountains. Stand on the viewing platform to take photos of the pillar (named "Southern Sky Column") surrounded by mist – it's easy to imagine why James Cameron chose this spot for his fictional world. Your guide will share how the park's unique landscape formed over millions of years, making it both a scenic and educational experience.

Lunch will be at a park restaurant with views of the mountains – we'll order Tujia-style dishes like three-pot stew (a mild version is available) and stir-fried wild vegetables.

In the afternoon, we'll take a shuttle bus to Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, known for its panoramic views and legendary rock formations. Hike along the gentle Tianzi Mountain Trail (about 2 km, 1.5 hours) to see attractions like "Tianzi Looking at the Sea" (a rock resembling an emperor gazing at the mountains) and "Fairy Scattering Flowers" (a cluster of delicate pillars). The trail is well-paved, with benches every 500 meters for rest.

In the late afternoon, we'll take the Tianzi Mountain Cableway down the mountain (optional, for those who prefer to avoid downhill walking) and return to our Wulingyuan hotel.

Day 7 Zhangjiajie | Grand Canyon Glass Bridge & Baofeng Lake Boat Tour

After yesterday's active hiking, today's itinerary balances excitement with relaxation – a thrilling glass bridge experience followed by a peaceful boat tour on a mountain lake.

Morning: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

After a leisurely breakfast, we'll drive to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (about 40 minutes from Wulingyuan). The highlight here is the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge – the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge, spanning 430 meters across the canyon and suspended 300 meters above the ground. Don't worry – the glass is 24 mm thick and extremely sturdy! Admire the dramatic views of the surrounding cliffs and waterfalls as you cross.

Before crossing the bridge, we'll stop at the visitor center for safety briefings. You can rent non-slip shoe covers (required) and take photos at the bridge's entrance. The crossing takes about 20 minutes, with plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery. After crossing, we'll take a gentle downhill path to the canyon floor (about 1 km, 30 minutes) to see the "Rainbow Waterfall" – a beautiful waterfall that creates rainbows on sunny days.

Afternoon: Baofeng Lake Boat Tour

After lunch at a restaurant near the canyon, we'll drive to Baofeng Lake (about 20 minutes from the canyon) – a serene alpine lake surrounded by mountains. Take a boat tour on the lake, where you'll glide past sheer cliffs, lush forests, and hidden caves. The boat guides (many of whom are local Tujia people) will sing traditional folk songs and share stories about the lake's legends. Keep an eye out for fish jumping in the water as you enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The lake's calm waters and fresh mountain air make this the perfect way to unwind after the morning's adventure. After the boat tour, we'll return to our Wulingyuan hotel for free time. You can relax at the hotel, visit a local Tujia handicraft shop, or try making Tujia rice wine at a nearby family home.

Day 8 Zhangjiajie | Tianmen Mountain Half-Day Tour & Departure

Your Zhangjiajie adventure culminates with a visit to the breathtaking Tianmen Mountain, famously known as the "Gateway to Heaven." This half-day tour follows the classic Route A, designed to showcase its most iconic features efficiently.

cable car ride from the city center. During this 30-minute aerial voyage, watch as the urban world falls away, revealing a breathtaking bird's-eye view of the "99-Bend Mountain Road" snaking through the valley like a ribbon, a masterpiece of human endeavor set against a vast natural canvas.

Upon reaching the top, prepare for a series of thrilling walks along the cliff's edge:

Glass Skywalk: Test your nerves on this 60-meter-long transparent walkway, suspended 1,430 meters above the deep valley floor, offering the sensation of walking on air.

Cliff-Hanging Walkway: For a longer adventure, traverse the 1.6-kilometer path engineered along the vertical cliff face, providing continuous, awe-inspiring views.

For a change of pace, you may choose to visit the serene Tianmen Temple, a Buddhist complex reflecting Qing Dynasty architecture, nestled peacefully within the ancient forest. Alternatively, ascend to the summit's highest point, Cloud Dream Fairy Top (1,518 meters), for a panoramic overlook of the entire national park.

The descent is an adventure in itself. You will take a series of escalators down through the mountain's core to reach the world-renowned Tianmen Cave ("Heaven's Gate"). This natural arch, towering 131.5 meters high, is perpetually draped in mist, creating a mystical and ever-changing play of light and shadow—a perfect backdrop for photography.

Finally, you can either descend the 999 steps symbolically from the cave plaza or take the shuttle elevator down. A shuttle bus will then complete the journey back to the city.

In the afternoon, your guide and driver will transfer you to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) or Zhangjiajie West Railway Station for your departure, concluding your 8-day journey through China's most spectacular landscapes.

What a 30-Day China Adventure — Exceeded My Expectation

I recently completed the “30 Days China Tour from Beijing” with Asia Odyssey Travel, and as someone from Singapore, I found it to be an exceptional experience.

Starting in Beijing, everything kicked off seamlessly — airport pick-up worked well, and our guide made us feel comfortable right away. Over the month we moved through a very broad selection of China’s landscapes, cities, history and culture. From the imposing Great Wall of China and Forbidden City in Beijing to ancient capitals, ethnic minority regions, high-speed train rides, rural scenery and modern metropolises.

Some of the highlights for me:

  • Visiting the Great Wall early in the morning when it was quiet and feeling the scale of it in person.
  • Seeing ancient city walls, historic towns and temples that really brought Chinese history to life.
  • Travelling by high-speed train across regions — the logistics were smooth and we always arrived on time.
  • Staying in a mix of city hotels and countryside guesthouses which gave variety.
  • Getting to try regional cuisines — from northern Beijing specialties to southwestern flavours, each region surprised me.

An Incredible 21-Day China Experience - Eye-Opening & Seamless

I recently completed the “21-Day China Tour from Shanghai” with Asia Odyssey Travel, and as a traveler from the U.S., I found the journey both impressive and very well managed.

Starting in Shanghai, our arrival went smoothly — airport pick-up, a comfortable downtown hotel, and a friendly local guide who helped us get oriented right away. From there, the itinerary took us through a carefully curated mix of China’s highlights: we explored ancient towns, visited imposing historical monuments, traveled on high-speed trains and domestic flights, and experienced both modern cities and scenic countryside.

Some of the standout moments for me:

  • Walking through the old-city lanes and seeing the contrast of modern skyscrapers and traditional architecture.
  • Visiting iconic landmarks (palaces, temples, historic walls) that helped me appreciate China’s deep history.
  • Getting a taste of regional cuisine — from street-food stalls to more refined local restaurants — and discovering how varied Chinese food is.
  • Being impressed by the logistics: the hotels were well chosen, transport connections worked without major hiccups, and the guides were knowledgeable and professional.

I highly recommend this tour to fellow American travelers. It offers an excellent balance of history, nature, and city life — all arranged in a smart, hassle-free manner. Thanks to Asia Odyssey Travel for making it an unforgettable experience.

Amazing 30-Day Journey Across China — Well Organized and Truly Worth It

I just came back from the 30-Day China Panorama Tour from Guangzhou with Asia Odyssey Travel, and it was truly one of the most memorable trips I’ve ever joined.

From the moment I landed in Guangzhou, everything was well-coordinated. The local guide greeted us at the airport and made us feel welcome right away. We started with classic Cantonese highlights like the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Lychee Bay, and traditional dim sum — a great introduction to southern China’s culture.

The route that followed was impressive. We cruised along the Li River in Guilin, cycled through Yangshuo’s peaceful countryside, and admired the Longji Rice Terraces. In Yunnan, Dali and Lijiang’s old towns were full of character, with snow-capped mountains in the distance. Chengdu was all about pandas and Sichuan food, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong looked like scenes from a painting, and Chongqing’s mountain city views were unforgettable. The trip ended with Beijing’s Great Wall and Forbidden City, and Shanghai’s skyline — the perfect contrast of history and modern life.

Everything ran smoothly throughout. The guides were professional and friendly, the hotels were clean and comfortable, and transportation was efficient. My personal highlights were sharing bamboo rice with local villagers in Longji, standing by the turquoise lakes of Jiuzhaigou, and watching the city lights in Chongqing after dinner.
