Day 2 Lijiang Tour | Lijiang Old Town, Black Dragon Pond Park, Mu Palace

Lijiang (丽江), nestled under the breathtaking Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, forms a beautiful and peaceful link between Shangri-La to the north and Dali to the south. A UNESCO World Heritage site named "Old Town of Lijiang", it's not only a living ancient town complex, encompassing Dayan, Shuhe, and Baisha, but also the heartland of the Naxi ethnic group, with about 74% of the population being Naxi. A visit to Lijiang allows you to enjoy endless snow-capped mountain views, appreciate the charming old town, experience the rich Naxi culture, and unwind in its peaceful atmosphere.

Today, you will have some time to explore Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城), also known as Dayan Old Town. With over 800 years of history, Lijiang Old Town was once a bustling hub for trade along the famous "Old Tea Horse Caravan Trail". The town resembles a labyrinth, characterized by its numerous cobbled streets, traditional wooden houses with upturned eaves, ancient bridges, and an intricate network of waterways. You'll visit the Mu Palace (木府), a sprawling complex located in the heart of Lijiang Old Town, often referred to as the “Forbidden City of the South”. It offers a captivating glimpse into the grandeur of Naxi royalty, showcasing rich Naxi culture and the fascinating history of the Mu family. You'll also discover why Lijiang Old Town, unlike the top three most famous ancient Chinese cities, has no city wall. Afterwards, walk to a higher vantage point to capture a breathtaking panoramic view of the sprawling old town, with snow-capped mountains forming a majestic backdrop in the distance. Take a short walk to Sifang Street (四方街), the most famous square. Here, you can explore Naxi handicrafts, souvenirs, and local specialties, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of bustling bars with lively music spilling out onto the streets.

Afterward, let's head to Black Dragon Pond Park (黑龙潭公园), located at the northern edge of Lijiang Old Town. This picturesque location offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, highlighted by the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. On clear days, the reflection of the snow-capped peak on the tranquil water of the Black Dragon Pool creates a breathtaking scene.

Further Exploration in the Evening (Optional, explore on your own):

Lijiang Old Town takes on a different ambiance in the evening, showcasing its unique charm. (1) Here are some recommended alleys for taking awesome photos: Xianwen Alley (现文巷, also known as Oil-paper Umbrella Street), Zhenxing Alley (振兴巷, Lantern Street), Nanmen Bridge (南门桥,Wind Chime Street), and Sakura Restaurant (樱花餐厅), among others. (2) For those seeking nightlife, bars, and local cuisine, the following alleys are recommended: Sifang Street (where you can witness a bonfire dance performed by the Naxi people around 19:00), Wuyi Street (五一街), Xinhua Street (新华街), Zhongyi Market (忠义市场), etc.

Day 3 Lijiang Tour | Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, Yuhu Village, Shuhe Ancient Town (Optional)

After breakfast, it's time to venture beyond Lijiang Old Town and explore the renowned Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山). This majestic mountain is famous for its towering peaks, stunning scenery, and abundant biodiversity. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003. The mountain gets its name from its resemblance to a stainless jade dragon, especially during winter when its peaks are covered in thick snow.

The crown jewel of the region is the sight of 13 snow-capped peaks, with the highest peak named Shanzidou, reaching an impressive elevation of 5,596 meters (18,360 ft). To fully experience the mountain, it is recommended to take a 10-minute cable car ride up to Spruce Meadow (云杉坪), situated at 3,240 meters. The cable car ride itself is a remarkable experience, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Once you reach the top, you'll be greeted by awe-inspiring panoramic views and have the opportunity to explore meadows and pristine forests. After the tour, take cable down the mountain.

Afterward, take a sightseeing bus to Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷). The valley is a breathtaking sight, with its almost surreal turquoise blue water, reflecting the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the background. This valley boasts four lakes and a White Water Terrace. Each lake presents unique scenery, but the most beautiful one is the Jade Liquid Lake. The best time to admire the splendor of Blue Moon Valley is during a sunny midday when the lake's water, under the radiant sunlight, becomes as clear and blue as a mirror. You can capture many awesome photos here.

Optional Activity: Impression Lijiang" Show This Afternoon

If you're interested, you can choose to watch the Impression Lijiang show this afternoon at Ganhaizi (altitude: 3,100 meters). Directed by the renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, this magnificent open-air performance features singing and dancing that showcase the traditions and lifestyle of the local Naxi ethnic people. It lasts about one hour.

Leaving the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, you'll continue your journey to Yuhu Village (玉湖村), a traditional Naxi village nestled on the slopes of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The village is framed by the imposing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on one side and the tranquil Jade Lake on the other. The snow-capped peaks provide a dramatic backdrop. Be impressed by the stone houses, with their blue-grey stone walls and wooden doors and windows. Here, you can also have close contact with Naxi locals and experience their traditional way of life.

Authentic Naxi Family Visit for Local Culture:

This afternoon, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Naxi people with a visit to a local Naxi family in this Yuhu Village. Discover the unique architectural styles of the Naxi, learn the ancient art of crafting Dongba paper, and try your hand at writing the sacred Dongba characters. Don traditional Naxi clothing and indulge in the flavors of authentic Naxi snacks, offering a true taste of this fascinating culture.

Then, if your energy permits (optional), on the way back to Lijiang, you can make a stop at Shuhe Ancient Town (束河古镇). It is an important stop along the legendary Tea Horse Ancient Road. Unlike the bustling Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe offers a tranquil escape, with charming shops selling locally-made crafts lining the narrow cobbled streets. The gentle murmur of water flowing through canals and the aroma of Naxi cuisine wafting from cozy teahouses create a peaceful atmosphere where time seems to slow down. (Note: You can try local snacks like Chicken Bean Cold Noodles, Grilled Milk Fan, Fresh Flower Cake, Yunnan Ham Mooncake, and Jar-Roasted Rose Milk.)

After the tour, head back to Lijiang.

Day 4 Lijiang - Dali | Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, Erhai Lake Bike Ride, Free Time in Dali Ancient Town

After breakfast, drive 2 hours to Dali. Our local tour guide and driver will escort you to visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, providing a deep insight into Dali's historical and spiritual heritage.

The Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Templ(崇圣寺三塔景区), majestically set against the backdrop of the Cangshan Mountains and overlooking Erhai Lake, are the iconic symbol of Dali. The three pagodas (三塔), located at the front part of the complex, consist of one larger pagoda, known as Qianxun Pagoda about 69 meters high, flanked by two smaller ones. According to local legends, Dali was once a swamp inhabited by dragons that caused natural disasters, the Three Pagodas were built to deter the dragons. Take your time to closely observe the architectural details and the craftsmanship that have enabled these structures to stand tall and unyielding through the centuries. Don't miss the beautiful reflection pond in front of the pagodas, which provide stunning reflective views of the structures, perfect for photography.

After visiting the pagodas, proceed to Chongsheng Temple (崇圣寺) just behind them. This temple once served as the royal temple of the Dali Kingdom of Nanzhao with the good reputation of being “the Capital of Buddhism”. It is also famous as Tianlong Temple in Jin Yong’s "Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils." As you follow your guide, you will explore various halls for worship, including the impressive Mahavira Hall, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the temple grounds. From certain elevated points, you can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake.

After lunch, continue your journey with a leisurely bike ride along the west side of Erhai Lake (洱海). The name "Erhai" translates to "Ear-shaped Sea," reflecting its unique shape. It is the second-largest highland lake in the country and a key feature of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. As you pedal along the well-maintained lakeside path, the stunning views of the expansive blue lake waters bordered by the majestic Cangshan Mountains will leave you in awe. Along the route, you'll encounter quaint Bai villages, lush green fields, and vibrant flowers. The bike path offers numerous spots for you to pause and soak in the beautiful views, perfect for capturing memorable photographs.

Day 5 Dali Tour, Dali to Kunming by High-Speed Train | Xizhou Morning Market, Xizhou Ancient Town, Zhoucheng Tie-dye

Start your delightful day by immersing yourself in the lively Xizhou Morning Market (喜洲早市)! There's no better way to get under the skin of a place than by exploring its local market, here you can witness firsthand the local customs and mouth-watering dietary habits. This market has been a gathering spot for over a century where locals trade a wide array of goods - from farm-fresh produce and unique handicrafts to tantalizing local snacks. Yunnan, fondly known as the "Kingdom of Flora and Fauna," is a place where flowers and insects find their way into the local cuisine! Don't be surprised if you come across unfamiliar vegetables, fruits, and wild mushrooms. While you're there, don't miss your chance to try local favorites like Xizhou baba (a tasty stuffed pancake, savory or sweet) and a cup of freshly brewed Yunnan coffee.

After exploring the market, take a walking tour of Xizhou Ancient Town (喜洲古镇), acclaimed as the "Premier Town of the Bai people" due to its exceptionally the largest and best-preserved cluster of Bai ethnic group's traditional dwellings.  Xizhou Village is ideal for those seeking a more authentic and tranquil cultural experience of Bai life and traditions. As you wander through the village, visit some of the old mansions and Bai residences like Yan Family Compound (严家大院), you'll notice the most distinctive features of Bai architecture known as "Three-Room and One-Screen Wall (三房一照壁)" and "Siheyuan/Courtyard (四合院)”. These homes are adorned with exquisite details such as flying eaves, ornately carved wooden doors and beautifully painted walls typical of Bai aesthetics. Don't miss the "Three Courses of Tea" ceremony (三道茶), a Bai cultural practice you must experience. This tea ceremony, which transitions from bitter to sweet to an aftertaste, encapsulates the philosophy of "embraces hardship, values the sweetness that follows struggles, and reflects on the profound aftertastes that life experiences leave behind". In addition, Xizhou is surrounded by vast wheat fields, creating a striking contrast against the grey-and-white tones of the Bai minority dwellings. This harmonious coexistence with nature provides a healing, wonderful feeling. The beautiful scenery, especially in spring and autumn, draws tourists to appreciate Xizhou's charms.

Next, make your way to Zhoucheng Village, which is just a short drive from Xizhou. Zhoucheng Village (周城), is often referred to as the “Hometown of Bai Embroidery ”. It is Bai people village, famous for its traditional tie-dye art (扎染), which has been preserved and passed down through generations. The Bai tie-dye technique has been listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Explore workshops within the village that showcase exquisite Bai embroidery. These pieces often depict traditional motifs such as lotus flowers, fish, and birds, which carry significant cultural symbolism. Engage with the local craftsmen and women, many of whom have inherited their skills from generations. If you're lucky, you may witness live demonstrations of Bai embroidery and tie-dye techniques. Optional Activity: If interested, participate in a hands-on workshop and craft your own tie-dye fabric under the guidance of expert artisans.

Then, take a 2-hour high-speed train to Kunming. Upon your arrival at Kunming train station, our local tour guide and driver will meet you at the exit. They will then escort you to the hotel.

Day 6 Kunming Tour | Stone Forest, Yuantong Temple (Zen Buddhist), Green Lake Park

This morning, drive 80km (1.5 hours) to the Stone Forest (a World Heritage Site of South China Karst) for a Kunming Excursion. Afterwards, return to downtown for a Classic Kunming City Tour, including visits to Yuantong Temple (a Zen Buddhist temple), Green Lake Park (Cuihu Park), and more, based on your available time and interests.

In the morning, visit the Stone Forest (a World Heritage Site of South China Karst), a must-see natural wonder that was once submerged under an ancient sea. The Kunming Stone Forest (Shilin) is a national geological park famous for its unique stone forest scenery, which represents the magnificent transformations of the natural world over 270 million years (marine sedimentation → crustal uplift → volcanic lava coverage → erosion and leveling → formation of the Stone Forest). Within the Stone Forest, you can closely observe the traces left by the passage of time and gain an understanding of its distinctive karst landforms, rich geological history, and the accompanying Yi ethnic culture. A sightseeing bus will take you to explore the Big Stone Forest and Small Stone Forest. In addition to the touching legend of Ashima (阿诗玛a symbol of Yi ethnic culture), the Stone Forest also served as a filming location for "Journey to the West" (1986 TV series西游记), where Sun Wukong (Monkey King) was depicted as being trapped under Wuxing Mountain (五行山). Use your imagination to discover the magical shapes of the stone forests.

After that, you will head back to Kunming for Yuantong Temple. Located in the city center, Yuantong Temple combines tranquility amidst the bustling surroundings, offering a unique water courtyard temple. The temple has a history of over 1,200 years and is the oldest Guanyin Temple in China. Particularly noteworthy is its "Downhill Temple" design, where instead of ascending steps after entering the mountain gate, one descends gradually, creating a rare architectural feature among temples in China. Yuantong Temple is the only sacred place in the country that simultaneously accommodates the Han, Southern, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. At the rear of the temple, there is a typical Southeast Asian Buddhist architectural structure called the Bronze Buddha Hall (铜佛殿), which was built in 1985 specifically to house a bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha presented by the Buddhist Association of the Kingdom of Thailand. It has gained a high reputation in the Southeast Asian area and attracts many pilgrims and locals to visit every year.

Then, you can hike in Green Lake Park (Cuihu Park翠湖) which is 700m away from Yuantong Temple. Cuihu Park was once a marshy bay of Dianchi Lake, which later became a city lake during the Ming Dynasty. It earned its name from its "emerald waters on all sides, bamboo green in all seasons, willow green in spring and summer," and is renowned as the "green gem" and "jade within the city" of Kunming. Two embankments divide the lake into four parts. The north and south embankments, known as Ruandi (阮堤), were constructed during the reign of Emperor Daoguang by Governor Ruan Yuan, inspired by the Su Causeway in West Lake. The east and west embankments, called Tangdi, were built during the Republican era. Besides historical buildings and former residences of famous people, there is a sculpture of Nie Er (聂耳;1912-1935), one of the pioneers of modern Chinese music, who composed China's national anthem, "The March of the Volunteers". Today, Cuihu has become a place where locals take walks, feed fish, observe Black-headed Gulls migrating from Siberia during winter, enjoy lotus flowers, watch flower lanterns, dance, and savor life.

Head back to your hotel and have a good rest at your hotel.

Free Time Ideas:

  • Kunming Old Street(1km from Cuihu Park), with a history of over 900 years, is the only remaining old street in Kunming that retains its ancient charm. Stroll on stone-paved roads, you can taste authentic Yunnan Rice Noodles (Yunnan Cross-bridge Rice Noodle云南过桥米线), explore fascinating Yunnan antiques & traditional medicine shops, visit the former residence of Nie Er (聂耳故居), and more old buildings.
  • Yunnan Impression(云南印象) is a performance (one of the representative's works by Yang Liping杨丽萍, a renowned local dance artist from Yunnan) held at 8:00 p.m. It draws inspiration from the ethnic dance elements of various ethnic groups in Yunnan, such as Yi, Wa, Tibetan, Hani, Dai, Bulang, and Jinuo. It incorporates modern dance elements, showcasing the rich ethnic charm of Yunnan.

Day 7 Kunming to Kaili by High-Speed Train | Shiqao Miao Village (Traditional Papermaking), Matang Gejia Village (Batik Dyeing)

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and take a 3.5-hour high-speed train to Kaili in Guizhou.

Your first stop is Shiqao Miao Village (石桥村), renowned as the "Hometown of Ancient Papermaking" in China. Here, the ancient papermaking methods are still preserved. The area surrounding the Miao village is rich in paper mulberry trees, and for generations, the villagers have used the bark to make paper. You will have the opportunity to witness the entire papermaking process, from soaking and pulping the bark to drying and crafting the durable, exquisite paper products.

Cultural Experience: You'll create your own special decorative paper by embedding real flower petals and leaves directly into the pulp, crafting a personal keepsake that you can take home. Beyond the workshops, take time to explore the tranquil village nestled alongside the water, embraced by scenic mountains. It is called "Shiqiao" (Stone Bridge) village because of a natural stone arch bridge that spans the riverbanks.

In the afternoon, you will visit Matang Gejia Village (麻塘亻革家寨). The villagers of Matang believe themselves to be descendants of Hou Yi, the legendary archer. Their clothing is mainly decorated with batik and red embroidery. They fashion their headdresses into the shapes of bows and arrows, and their necklace pendants resemble various weapons, reminiscent of ancient generals. Legend has it that in ancient times, a general's wife went to the battlefield in her husband's armor and won a victory. To commemorate her, women wear general's attire during festivals.

Beyond their attire, the Gejia people's batik artistry is also very famous. The patterns are quite unique, often depicting powerful creatures like tigers and other animals, as well as flowers, birds, and insects, reflecting the Gejia people's deep love for nature. In the village, you can observe the villagers making batik by hand using beeswax. Cultural Experience: Try your hand at creating your own batik masterpiece, participating in every step - wax drawing, dyeing, and wax removal, and take your finished work home as a unique souvenir.

After the tour, transfer to your hotel in Kaili for check-in.

Note: If you're interested in staying overnight in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village to enjoy the stunning night views, please consult your travel advisor in advance.

Day 8 Kaili - Zhaoxing | Langde Miao Village, Zhaoxing Dong Village

In the morning, depart from Kaili and drive to Langde Miao Village(朗德苗上寨), known as the "Hometown of Chinese Folk Song and Dance." It is nestled amidst lush mountains and terraced fields. Unlike more commercialized villages, Langde retains its untouched, authentic charm, where ancient customs and the rhythm of songs and dances unfold slowly.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted with the "Twelve Cups of Block-Way Rice Wine" ceremony. Villagers dressed in magnificent silver headdresses and embroidered clothing will welcome guests and offer rice wine in ox horn cups. This is the highest etiquette of the Miao people for receiving distinguished guests, with each cup of wine representing blessings for a month. Afterward, you will walk along the stone-paved path to the Lusheng ground in the center of the village. Here, a wonderful Miao song and dance performance will take place, featuring toasting songs, Miao flying songs, and Lusheng dances in succession, leaving you mesmerized.

As an open-air museum of the Miao culture, the village exudes a rich ethnic flavor everywhere. Stroll among the stilted wooden houses (diaojiaolou) with a hundred years of history, traditionally built on stilts and scattered on the hillside in a well-arranged manner. The clothing here is also unique; the Miao residents are characterized by wearing long skirts, hence the name "Long Skirt Miao," representing the most gorgeous branch of Miao costumes.

Next, you will drive from Langde to Zhaoxing (about 2.5 hours) to visit Zhaoxing Dong Village (肇兴侗寨).

Zhaoxing Dong Village is known as the "Number One Dong Village." It is one of the largest and most well-preserved Dong villages in China.

Zhaoxing Dong Village is world-renowned for its spectacular drum tower complex. The village is home to over 6,000 residents, all from the Lu family line, divided into five major clans. Each clan forms a “group” or “tuan” - Ren, Yi, Li, Zhi, and Xin - representing the Confucian virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and integrity. Each “tuan” is centered around a drum tower and has its own drum tower, wind-and-rain bridge, and opera stage. The drum towers serve as gathering halls and are viewed as the spiritual and communal hearts of each group.

You can wander through the five "Tuan," exploring each of the five uniquely styled drum towers, and appreciate the wisdom and exquisite architectural skills of the Dong people. Strolling across the wind and rain bridges, with the flowing water and gentle breeze, you will feel as if you are in a beautiful landscape painting. You can also walk up to the village gate viewpoint for a stunning panoramic view over the entire village.

Finally, your guide will escort you to hotel in Zhaoxing.

Free Time Idea: Night View of Zhaoxing Dong Village

As night falls, Zhaoxing Dong Village glows with soft lights and quiet charm. Stroll through ancient alleys or climb to a viewpoint to admire the stilt houses and wind-and-rain bridges bathed in a gentle, dreamy glow.

Day 9 Zhaoxing - Congjiang - Rongjiang | Biasha Mao Village, Zhanli Dong Village

After breakfast in Zhaoxing, drive about 40 minutes to begin today's exploration.

Your first destination is the mysterious Biasha Miao Village (岜沙苗寨), known as "China's Last Gunman Tribe." Stepping through the village gate is like traveling back to an ancient era. The men wear dark blue cloth jackets and straight, wide-legged trousers, with firelocks and machetes hanging from their waists, displaying a heroic spirit. The men here start learning to shoot from a young age; for them, the firelock is both a tool for hunting and a weapon to protect their homes.

Biasha men are distinguished by their "Huge (户棍)" hairstyle, where the surrounding hair is shaved off with a sickle, leaving only a topknot in the center, symbolizing "harmony between heaven, earth, and humanity." Boys' hair is not cut from birth until their coming-of-age ceremony when elders shave it off with a sickle. It is said that this tradition has been passed down since the time of the legendary tribal leader Chiyou.

Furthermore, the Biasha people have worshipped trees since ancient times, and their grandest sacrificial ritual is the worship of the tree god. In Biasha, when a new life is born, the family will plant a tree in the forest representing that little life; when life ends, people will use this tree that accompanied them throughout their lives to make a coffin for burial, allowing them to rest peacefully.

In Biasha Miao Village, you will have the opportunity to witness unique folk performances, such as the sickle haircutting ceremony. You will see the gleaming sickle shaved hair close to the scalp, strand by strand falling. It looks quite thrilling to onlookers, but the barber and the person getting the haircut appear relaxed and at ease, showcasing the bravery and resilience of the Biasha people.

Next, you will visit Zhanli Dong Village (占里侗寨), a legendary and tranquil village where every household has exactly one son and one daughter. Legend has it that there was a female herbalist in Zhanli who used a herb called "Huanhua Grass" (herbal fertility tea) to balance the gender of fetuses. However, Zhanli also has ancestral rules stating that this herb can only be taken by villagers. Don't be disappointed; even if you can't uncover the secret of herbs, you will surely appreciate the peaceful life by the flowing stream near Zhanli Bridge. Also, don't forget to look for the village's "male well" and "female well," which are said to be key medicinal guides for taking "Huanhua Grass."

After your village visits, drive about 1.5 hours to Rongjiang for check-in.

Day 10 Rongjiang - Huangguoshu | Dali Dong Village, Transfer to Huangguoshu

After breakfast, you will visit Dali Dong Village (大利侗寨), an ancient Dong village with a long history, famous for its five bridges and Siheyuan-style courtyards layout.

Inside the village, you'll see five Dong-style wind-and-rain bridges, each over a century old and featuring distinct architectural styles. As you explore the traditional Dong dwellings, the most iconic is the Yang Family Courtyard, a unique wooden Siheyuan (courtyard house) that is the only Dong residence in the village built in the Han architectural style. The village lanes are paved entirely with bluestone slabs, laid during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty, preserving an authentic historical ambiance.

At the heart of the village stands the iconic drum tower, an essential feature of every Dong village and a powerful symbol of clan unity and pride. Opposite the tower is the local opera stage, a venue for performances that sustain Dong culture. Since the Dong people do not have their own written language, the Dong Grand Song and Dong Opera bear the responsibility of cultural inheritance.

Surrounding Dali Dong Village, lush ancient trees thrive, including over 400 ancient Phoebe zhennan trees, embodying the Dong people's traditional belief in the harmony between humanity and nature: "old people guarding the village, ancient trees protecting the settlement."

After the tour, drive about 4 Hours to your hotel in Huangguoshu for check-in.

Day 11 Huangguoshu - Guiyang | Huangguoshu Waterfall Tour: Doupotang, Tianxingqiao, Huangguoshu Waterfall

After breakfast, visit Huangguoshu Waterfall. You will hear the roaring water a kilometer away, and admire the waterfall's dynamic views!

Back in 17th century, Xu Xiake, a famous ancient Chinese geographer and pre-internet celebrity, traveled to this resort. His blog boosted the reputation of this waterfall nationwide! Follow the popular path he took:

Head to Doupotang Scenic Area (陡坡塘), known for its 105-meter width. It is one of the filming locations for the TV series version of Journey to the West, one of China's Four Great Classical Novels. During the wet season, the water flow is rapid and makes a low roar, hence its nickname "Roaring Waterfall." Many tourists enjoy imitating the scenes of Journey to the West pilgrims. Feel free to try it!

Next, take a sightseeing bus to Tianxingqiao Scenic Area (天星桥), to admire the most complete karst landscape in the scenic area - caves, waterfalls, and water stone forests interwoven. You can enjoy view from various angles, with no repetitive vlog or plog scenery. It is especially famous for Silver Chain Dropping Pool Waterfall (银链坠潭瀑布). Unlike ordinary waterfalls where water falls linearly, multiple small waterfalls converge and cascade from a circular stone beach into the deep pool below.

Afterward, take a sightseeing bus to Huangguoshu Waterfall (黄果树瀑布). As the main waterfall with a huge drop, 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide, it consists of 18 waterfalls with different styles. At first glance, it can be folded into four layers. During the summer flood season, the water volume per hour is enough to fill 1296 swimming pools, falling into the 17-meter-deep pool. The roaring sound of water hit rocks day and night. You will build a deep connection with nature, find scenery changes from high up, straight on, and from the side.

Behind the waterfall is the 134-meter-long narrow Water Curtain Cave (水帘洞), a great place to touch the flowing water and see how it falls. You will walk to it and return by escalator.

After visit, guide and driver will escort you to your hotel in Guiyang City (about 1.5-2 hours).

Guizhou Trip Prep: 3-Minute Q&A

Getting There & Around

Guiyang, Guizhou's provincial city, is your main hub for flights and trains. Attractions are spread out, so driving is often the best way to explore Guizhou's remote natural sites and ethnic villages.

Best Time to Visit Guizhou

Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-October) are ideal. Avoid Chinese New Year, May Day (May 1-5), and National Day Holiday (October 1-7) due to crowds.

Respect Ethnic Culture

They are welcoming, but it's better to ask about village traditions before entering homes (e.g., don't step on doorsteps, enter inner rooms only if invited). If offered "Lanmen Wine (拦门酒)," a small sip shows thanks if you can't finish it; accepting the cup by hand usually means you'll drink it all.

Other Packing Tips:

1. Weather & Sun: Guizhou's weather is changeable, so carry a dual-purpose umbrella and more types of clothes. Always apply sunscreen due to strong UV radiation from the plateau terrain.
2. Guizhou cuisine is known for its spicy and sour flavors and strong aromas, like Sour Soup Fish. Your guide can help you find suitable restaurants if you're not used to the local cuisine.

Guizhou Recommended 4 Star Hotel
Guizhou Recommended 4 Star Hotel
Guizhou Recommended 4 Star Hotel

Accommodation standards in Guizhou may not be as developed as those in major cities like Beijing or Shanghai. We recommend choosing 4-star standard hotels or above for better comfort and service.

Guiyang offers the widest selection of international and domestic hotel chains. Other major cities like Anshun, Libo, and Tongren offer decent hotel options, though international brands are limited.

In the Qiandongnan ethnic minority region (Kaili, Xijiang, Congjiang, Rongjiang, Zhaoxing, Zhenyuan), accommodations primarily consist of boutique guesthouses and some mid-range hotels. For Jiabang Terraces, mountain inns are available. Please note that hotels may not offer Western breakfast or English service, but our guides will assist with language at check-in/out.

A Journey Through Guizhou's Hidden Gems"

I recently returned from the 7-Day Colorful Guizhou Tour, and it was an incredible experience. The itinerary was thoughtfully planned, offering a perfect blend of natural wonders and cultural immersion.

From the moment we arrived in Guiyang, everything was well-organized. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights about the local Miao and Dong cultures that enriched our visits to the villages. Participating in traditional dances and sampling local cuisine made the experience authentic and memorable.

The natural landscapes were breathtaking. Visiting the Huangguoshu Waterfall, one of the largest in Asia, was a highlight. The Xiaoqikong Scenic Area, with its lush forests and clear waters, felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

Accommodations were comfortable, and the transportation between sites was smooth. The tour struck a great balance between guided activities and free time to explore on our own.

If you're looking to explore a less-traveled part of China rich in culture and natural beauty, I highly recommend this tour. It was a journey that left me with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for Guizhou's unique charm.

Amazing cultural experience! I joined the 5-Day Guizhou Ethnic Tour.

"Amazing cultural experience! I joined the 5-Day Guizhou Ethnic Tour, and it was absolutely unforgettable. We explored the Miao and Dong villages, experiencing their rich traditions and incredibly warm hospitality. Our guide was fantastic—super knowledgeable and really passionate about sharing local culture. We even got to join in a traditional Miao dance and taste some amazing local food.

The highlight for me was staying overnight in Zhaoxing Dong Village. The drum towers lit up at night were magical, and waking up to mist-covered mountains felt like something out of a dream. The whole itinerary was well-organized, with just the right balance of activities and downtime.

If you're looking to truly experience Guizhou's ethnic culture and stunning landscapes, this tour is a must. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who wants more than just sightseeing.

An Unforgettable Adventure Through Nature's Masterpieces

I recently completed the 7-Day Zhangjiajie & Fanjingshan Tour, and it was an experience beyond words. From the moment we set foot in Zhangjiajie, the towering sandstone pillars of the National Forest Park took my breath away. Walking across the glass bridge suspended over the canyon was both thrilling and awe-inspiring.

Our guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and always attentive to our needs. They provided fascinating insights into the local culture and history, making each site visit more meaningful.

The journey to Fanjingshan was equally remarkable. The hike to the summit was challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views that made every step worthwhile. The unique rock formations and the tranquility of the surroundings provided a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Accommodations throughout the tour were comfortable, and the logistics were handled seamlessly. I appreciated the balance between guided activities and free time to explore on our own.

If you're seeking a blend of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion, this tour is a must. It left me with memories that will last a lifetime.
