Day 1 Arrival in Kuching | Airport Pick-up & Hotel Check-in

Welcome to Malaysia! Upon arrival at Kuching International Airport (KCH), you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The drive to your accommodation will take about  30 minutes. Check in and spend the rest of the day free at leisure.

Kuching is the capital city of Sarawak, a state in Malaysian Borneo. It's a fascinating city with a rich cultural heritage and serves as the gateway to exploring Borneo's incredible biodiversity.

The name "Kuching" means "cat" in Malay, and you'll find cat statues and monuments throughout the city reflecting this connection. Wander its lively waterfront, explore historic streets, and savor famous dishes like Sarawak Laksa. The nearby Sarawak Cultural Village offers an exceptional opportunity to exp erience traditional longhouses and learn about the diverse ethnic groups of Sarawak.

It's also a popular base for visiting nearby national parks like Bako National Park (home to proboscis monkeys), Semenggoh Wildlife Centre (orangutan sanctuary), and Kubha National Park (beautiful waterfalls and unique amphibian species)...

Arrival Ideas:

Kuching International Airport (KCH) serves as the main gateway to Sarawak, with direct flights available from major regional hubs such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Jakarta.

Day 2 Kuching | Hike the Rainforest of Bako National Park

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Bako Village Jetty (about 45 minutes). Bako National Park is situated on a peninsula on the coast. From the jetty, you will then board a speedboat (about 20-30 minutes) that will take you through mangrove-lined estuaries to the Bako National Park headquarters.

Bako National Park, the oldest and one of the most popular national parks in Sarawak, offers the perfect introduction to Sarawak's forest and wildlife. Despite being only 27 square kilometers, the park boasts seven ecosystems, including rainforest, mangroves, swamp forest, cliffs, and beaches. It is widely recognized as one of the very best places in Borneo to observe the rare proboscis monkeys, identifiable by their distinctive long noses.

Take a little break at the park's headquarters and gear up for your hike through the jungle trails. Bako boasts an impressive network of 17 well-marked trails, catering to all fitness levels. These trails wind through various vegetation types, from dense rainforest to unique "kerangas" (heath forest) and mangrove swamps, offering a constant change of scenery and an insight into Borneo's rich biodiversity.

Keep your eyes peeled for other fascinating creatures, including playful long-tailed macaques, shy silvered langurs, Bornean bearded pigs, monitor lizards, and a wide array of colorful birdlife (over 150 species recorded!). Tips: While Bako offers excellent chances to see wildlife, sightings are never guaranteed as animals are wild and in their natural habitat. Patience and quiet observation increase your chances.

Discover the secluded beach surrounded by dramatic sandstone cliffs and sea stacks. Millions of years of erosion have formed a coastline of steep cliffs, rocky headlands and stretches of white, sandy bays. Waves have carved the cliffs into sea arches and sea-stacks, with colored patterns formed by iron deposits.

After trekking the trails, board your boat for the return journey to Bako Village. Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Kuching.

Day 3 Kuching | Sarawak Cultural Village

Today, embark on a captivating 45-minute drive to the Sarawak Cultural Village, an extraordinary and award-winning "living museum" that truly lives up to its claim of allowing you to "See Sarawak in Half a Day." This unique 17-acre village condenses the vast and majestic cultures of Malaysia's largest state into an easily accessible and immersive experience.

Popularly known as SCV, the village showcases the seven major ethnic groups of Sarawak: the Iban, Bidayuh, Penan, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Malay, and Chinese. As you take a leisurely stroll, you'll encounter exact replicas of their traditional dwellings, meticulously crafted down to the specific types of wood, authentic landscaping, and intricate carvings that define each community's unique architectural style.

At each "house," a knowledgeable "storyteller" awaits. These experts in traditional cultures and lifestyles are eager to describe and interpret their heritage, happily posing for photos with visitors. You'll gain fascinating insights into the daily lives, customs, and craftsmanship of these diverse groups, including the famous longhouses of Borneo. There are daily multi-cultural dance performances in the village’s own theatre.

After the tour, drive back to Kuching. The rest of the day is free for you to explore. Maybe wander the streets to see the giant cat statues, spray-painted street art and local cat museum. If you didn't visit the Waterfront, now is the time to do so.

Day 10 Sandaka to Sepilok to Rainforest Lodge | Sepilok Orangutan & Bornean Sun Bear Sanctuary, Kinabatangan River Cruise

After breakfast, we'll journey to the Sepilok area, ready to meet Borneo's most beloved residents!

First, visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Witness the heartwarming sight of rescued orangutans, our closest primate relatives, swinging through the trees and being fed by their carers. An added treat is a visit to the adjacent Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Center, marvel at the adorable antics of the world's smallest bear species, frolicking in their naturalistic enclosures.

Our boat will glide silently along the water, eyes scanning the dense foliage for proboscis monkeys settling in the tree, playful orangutans, and if luck is on our side, even rare Bornean pygmy elephants! And if you don't see the famous Bornean Pygmy Elephants today, you'll have another two chances to search for them tomorrow.

Tips: The weather in the region can be humid and unpredictable, especially during the rainy season, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing, a rain jacket, and insect repellent. Comfortable shoes are necessary for nature walks and river cruises.

Keep an eye out for colorful hornbills soaring overhead and crocodiles lurking by the banks – every moment holds the promise of an incredible surprise!

In the afternoon, you will proceed to have another river cruise on the Kinabatangan River. With the sun beginning its descent, painting the sky with warm hues, the wildlife activity picks up again. Travel Tips for Visiting Malaysia

Visa and Entry Requirements

Most nationalities, including those from Canada and the United States, do not require a visa for stays under 90 days. Check specific requirements for your country at Malaysia’s immigration website before traveling.

Best Times to Visit Malaysia:

Malaysia’s equatorial climate means warm weather all year round, punctuated by monsoon seasons affecting different parts of the country at different times:

The best time to visit Peninsular Malaysia is from December to February, while East Malaysia is best from June to August, avoiding the heaviest rains.

Always carry water, sunscreen, and a raincoat or umbrella, as the weather can change very quickly in Malaysia.

Language: Malay is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learn basic phrases like “Terima kasih” (thank you) for politeness.

Money and Costs: Use Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Carry some cash for rural areas and small vendors, as card payments aren’t always accepted. ATMs are widely available in cities.

Cultural Etiquette:

Malaysia is multicultural (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indigenous groups). Respect diverse customs. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites (mosques, temples) and rural areas. This means covering your shoulders and knees. Women may be required to wear a headscarf in mosques (often provided).

Food and Dining:

Malaysian cuisine is a delightful blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences. Halal food is widely available. Vegetarian and vegan options are common in urban areas.
