Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1 Fes Medina | Hotel Pick-up, Bab Boujloud, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Quaraouiyine, Chouara Tannery, Marinid Tombs

Today, meet in the hotel or riad lobby. Spend the day walking in Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities and a living UNESCO medieval museum. This foremost of Morocco's four Imperial Cities boasts a completely car-free medina, leading travelers through a historic labyrinth of 9,000 winding alleyways and ancient souks.

Enter the historic old town through Bab Boujloud, a celebrated gateway. Marvel at its classic Moorish design and iconic mosaic tiles—colored blue for Fes and green for Islam—before heading straight down into the lively main market streets.

From there, visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, the most magnificent historic college in Fes. This beautiful masterpiece blends local Berber traditions with elegant Andalusian style. As you walk through the peaceful courtyard, you can admire Morocco’s best craftsmanship, featuring intricate plasterwork, fine cedarwood, and colorful Zellige tiles that create a quiet, timeless space.

Next, visit Al-Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and recognized as the world’s oldest active university. Often dubbed the "Oxford of the Islamic world," this spiritual heart allows non-Muslims to admire its stunning green-tiled roofs and intricate Zellige courtyard directly from the entrance gates.

Next, experience Chouara Tannery, where local artisans preserve an unchanged 11th-century tradition. Holding fresh mint against the powerful aroma, you’ll look down upon a spectacular sea of multi-colored stone vats where leather is still dyed by hand.

Next, ascend to the 14th-century Marinid Tombs for the ultimate panoramic vista of Fes. Perched on a northern hill, these historic royal ruins offer a wide, open space to wander freely, capture spectacular photographs, and watch a breathtaking sunset over the sprawling ancient medina below.

Overnight in Fes.

Optional: Moroccan brass engraving

Starting at 9:30 AM, this three-hour workshop teaches you geometric layout using a compass and ruler. With clear, easy-to-follow steps, you will confidently learn to draw circles and divide them into precise segments.

Expert Advice and FAQs for Taking a Morocco Tour

FAQ Icon
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do We Need a Morocco Visa? How Is the Visa Policy?+

Morocco has a relatively traveler-friendly visa policy for many international visitors. Citizens from numerous countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, and most European countries, can enter Morocco visa-free for stays of up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

However, visa requirements vary depending on nationality. Travelers should always check the latest regulations or consulate before departure, as policies may change.

For guests booking with Asia Odyssey Travel, our travel consultants can provide guidance on visa preparation and entry requirements based on your nationality.

2. What is the best time to visit Morocco?+

Most travelers prefer spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) because temperatures are comfortable for cities, the desert, and mountain areas.

Spring (March to May): This is one of the most popular times to visit Morocco. The weather is pleasant, flowers bloom across valleys and gardens, and temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing, desert tours, and hiking.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn offers warm sunny days and cooler evenings, especially ideal for Sahara Desert trips and imperial city tours.

3. How Long Should I Stay? What Is the Best Trip for First-Timers to Morocco?+

For first-time visitors, a 7–10 day Morocco itinerary is considered the ideal duration. This allows travelers to experience Morocco’s imperial cities, desert landscapes, local culture, and scenic mountain regions without feeling rushed.

4. What Are the Must-Visit Places in Morocco? How Can I Cover Them in My Trip?+
  • Marrakech: Known for lively souks, palaces, gardens, and traditional Moroccan culture.
  • Fes: Home to one of the world’s oldest medinas and famous for traditional craftsmanship.
  • Chefchaouen: The famous blue-painted mountain town ideal for photography and relaxation.
  • Sahara Desert: Experience camel rides, sunset dunes, and overnight luxury desert camps.
  • Atlas Mountains: Perfect for scenic drives, Berber villages, and trekking.
  • Essaouira: A charming coastal city known for seafood, beaches, and laid-back atmosphere.

How to Cover Them Efficiently

A well-designed itinerary typically follows a north-to-south route:

Casablanca → Chefchaouen → Fes → Sahara Desert → Marrakech → Essaouira

This route minimizes backtracking and offers a gradual transition from imperial cities to desert landscapes and coastal relaxation.

5. Which City Is the Best Starting Point in Morocco? Marrakech or Casablanca?+
City Recommended For
Casablanca Comprehensive Morocco tours and first-time travelers
Marrakech Shorter cultural and desert-focused trips

AOT Expert Suggests:

  • Choose Casablanca if: You are planning 7-to-12-day complete tour of Morocco, want a smooth geographic loop without backtracking, and prefer a modern city to ease into the country's driving and culture.
  • Choose Marrakech if: Your vacation time is short (under 7 days), you are arriving on a short flight from Europe, or you want to focus exclusively on the desert, mountains, and southern oasis valleys.

Where to Stay: Handpicked Hotels/Riads/Camps for Your Morocco Tour

When traveling in Morocco, accommodations change naturally from one destination to another, giving travelers different local experiences throughout the journey.

In Casablanca and Marrakech, most travelers prefer staying in the city center, close to major attractions, restaurants, and shopping areas. These cities offer modern hotels, international brands, and stylish boutique stays with convenient access for sightseeing.

In Morocco’s imperial cities such as Fes, staying in the Old Medina is highly recommended. Traditional riads, built around peaceful courtyards, offer a more authentic Moroccan atmosphere and easy access to local markets and historical sites.

When reaching Merzouga, the experience becomes completely different with an unforgettable Sahara Desert camp stay. Travelers can enjoy camel rides, sunset views, and overnight stays under the stars.

Morocco offers luxury, comfortable, and budget accommodation options, including standard camps and luxury desert tents equipped with essential amenities such as private bathrooms, air-conditioning, and hot water to ensure a pleasant stay.
