Welcome to Marrakech!
Upon your arrival at Marrakech Menara Airport, our local staff will greet you at the arrivals exit for a comfortable private transfer to your hotel or riad. The rest of the day is yours to shake off the jet lag and dive into the sensory explosion of North Africa’s most vibrant oasis.
Recommended Marrakech Highlights:
Optional Casablanca Arrival:
If your international flight arrives at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN)—often preferred for better premium airline connections—our private vehicle will greet you directly at the terminal. Before heading Marrakech (240km, 3h), we will arrange a stop to witness the breathtaking Hassan II Mosque, the world's only major mosque built directly over the Atlantic waves.
By 8:00 AM, you will board your private, air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle or A/C minivan to begin the journey toward Sahara Desert.
First, you will ascend the rugged spine of the Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n'Tichka Pass. Reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters, you will navigate dramatic bends that offer a bird’s-eye view of red-earth Berber Villages, where shepherds tend their flocks and life follows an ancient mountain rhythm.
Descending the eastern slopes, you will arrive at the golden gates of Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO). This giant earthen fortification is a masterpiece of clay architecture and a living film set, famously featured in cinematic icons from Gladiator to Game of Thrones. You will wander through its labyrinthine alleys and climb up to the summit to get a paranoma view.
Your journey continues to nearby Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Africa.
Here, you will immerse yourself in the world of desert cinema. Also, explore the legendary film studios to see the massive sets that have shaped global movies for decades. And admire the historic Kasbah Taourirt, once the palatial residence of the powerful Glaoui family.
Stay overnight at your hotel/raid in Ouarzazate.
Optional One Day Atlas Mountains Hiking Tour:
Before heading south to the desert, optimize your route with a detour into the alpine heart of the Atlas. Drive directly from Marrakech to the trekking hub of Imlil. With mules handling your luggage, embark on a scenic 1-hour acclimation hike up to the isolated village of Aroumd (1,900m). Sleep in a traditional Mountain Gite (stone lodge), waking up to look directly into the raw, towering rock walls of Mount Toubkal (4,167m)—the roof of North Africa.
(Note: If chosen, the subsequent drive to Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka will shift to the following day).

Today after breakfast, continue your Sahara Desert tour to M'Hamid. Thday’s drive covers approximately 320 km and takes around 7–9 hours including scenic stops, cultural visits, and lunch breaks.
Firstly, cross the dramatic Tizi n'Tinififft Pass, where the landscapes begin to shift from the High Atlas region into the lush oasis scenery of southern Morocco.
Continue to Tamnougalt. Here, you can relax on the panoramic rooftop terrace with a refreshing glass of traditional Moroccan mint tea while admiring the breathtaking Draa Valley framed by the layered cliffs of Jbel Kissane.
Continue your Draa valley driving. Stop near Zagora for lunch before continuing deeper toward the Sahara frontier.
Optional Draa Valley Morocco Dates Experience
From October to April, the Draa Valley produces some of Morocco’s finest dates. You can stop at local roadside stalls to sample and purchase fresh seasonal dates directly from the oasis communities.
Dive deep into the sacred town of Tamegroute. Explore the 17th-century underground Sufi Library, home to priceless Quranic manuscripts written on gazelle parchment.
Then, walk through the subterranean earth passages (the underground Kasbah) to visit the traditional Green Pottery Workshops. Witness master artisans using ancestral kilns and a secret manganese-and-copper glaze to craft Morocco’s iconic emerald-green ceramics.
Leaving Tamegroute, the road climbs sharply through the Djebel Bani ridge. Stop at the summit of Tizi Anagame for a breathtaking, bird's-eye view of the vast Tagounite palm oasis cutting through the arid landscape.
By late afternoon, arrive in M’Hamid, widely regarded as the best gateway to the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga and the authentic Sahara Desert experience.

Today, after a relaxed breakfast in M'Hamid, your true Sahara expedition begins. Around 9:00 AM, your professional driver will deflate the tires of your powerful 4x4 Land Cruiser.
At the absolute edge of the town, the tarmac abruptly ends. Plunge straight into a thrilling, two-hour hardcore off-road rally across trackless dried riverbeds and vast expanses of black stone desert (Reg).
As you venture deeper into the uninhabited wilderness, keep your camera ready for a Lucky Encounter with rare Saharan wildlife, such as elusive wild donkeys or elegant desert gazelles. Along the ancient trails, we will arrange a stop at a resilient nomadic family’s traditional woven tent.
Arrive at your isolated, luxury desert camp just before noon, perfectly timed to completely bypass the fierce 12:00–14:00 midday sun.
Savor a refined traditional lunch. The rest noon hours is for your relaxing.
Later, as the intense heat breaks and the light turns to liquid gold, mount your camel caravan for a timeless, 30-minute trek. Ascend to the crest of Erg Chigaga’s colossal, wave-like dunes to witness a cinematic, gold-and-crimson Sahara sunset.
After your dinner, gather around the crackling bonfire for an authentic nomadic music session under the stars. Afterward, step outside into a world of absolute darkness.
Strictly isolated from any city lights, Erg Chigaga boasts an incredibly pure, zero-light-pollution sky. Look up to see the breathtaking, razor-sharp Milky Way arching directly overhead.
Stay overnight at your Erg Chigaga luxury camp with private bathroom.

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking Sahara sunrise over the colossal dunes (optional). After a serene breakfast at the camp, your 4x4 vehicle will power up for the thrilling return journey. Today, you will not trace your steps back. Instead, get out of Sahara Desert from Foum Zguid.
As your Land Cruiser speeds across the vast, flat expanse of Lake Iriqui—a prehistoric dried salt lake—experience the raw adrenaline of a true desert rally. Keep your eyes on the horizon: as the sun heats the cracking earth, you may be treated to a mesmerizing Saharan Mirage, where distant black mountains appear to float on phantom waters.
After navigating the challenging, rock-strewn hammadas, you will triumphantly emerge at the desert outpost of Foum Zguid. Here, the grueling off-road adventure ends, and your tires hit the smooth tarmac.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to wash away the desert dust and recharge.
Plunge into the crisp, blue water of your hotel’s oasis swimming pool, or lounge under the shade of palm trees with a chilled drink, enjoying the satisfying contrast of modern luxury on the edge of the wilderness.
Optional Moroccan Hammam:
To completely melt away the exhaustion of the Sahara trek, substitute your hotel shower with a traditional Berber Hammam. You will be coated in nutrient-rich Savon Noir (natural olive black soap) and organic volcanic clay (Ghassoul). A professional local therapist will use a specialized Kessa glove to intensely scrub and exfoliate away every micro-grain of desert sand and dead skin.

Leaving the poolside oasis of Foum Zguid, your private 4x4 boards the long western tarmac of the R109. The first hour is a lesson in raw desert minimalism—an endless expanse of black-stone hamada broken only by stubborn acacia trees.
As you penetrate the wrinkles of the Anti-Atlas range, the flat horizon rises into violent tectonic folds and pink-clay canyons.
Roll into Tata, a low-density, rose-walled oasis town that feels utterly untamed by modern tourism. Break the journey here for a brief rest, catching glimpses of the traditional, small-scale irrigation channels (Seguia) that feed the roadside palm groves and micro-farms.
Heading north into the dry Ameln valleys, your vehicle tackles steep mountain ascents toward the isolated stone village of Aït Kine. Here sits Agadir d’Aït Kine, a magnificent, living collective granary.
This multi-story stone fortress is secured by a hereditary tribal key-keeper (Amin). A true sense of historical weight settles in as he uses a heavy, hand-forged medieval iron key to unlock the massive timber doors.
Inside, dusty shafts of sunlight pierce the narrow ceiling vents, illuminating tiers of dry-masonry cells where Berber clans once locked away their precious grain, legal scrolls, and family silver. As the afternoon sun dips low, clear the final high-altitude pass as the Tafraoute Basin opens up below.
In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Tafraoute and check into your lodging just as the town's terracotta facades blend seamlessly into the burning mountain background.

Begin your morning in the surreal Aguerd Oudad Valley, a landscape dominated by bizarre, wind-sculpted rock formations just south of town. First, marvel at Napoleon’s Hat (Le Chapeau de Napoléon), a monumental, free-standing boulder formation that perfectly mirrors the iconic profile of the emperor’s bicorne military hat.
Nearby, venture deeper into the valley to stand among the Painted Rocks. This massive 1984 land art masterpiece features towering granite monoliths coated in vivid, weather-worn blues, pinks, and blacks, creating a brilliant, technicolor contrast against the raw, dusty mountain backdrop.
Later, board your vehicle and drive north through the rugged switchbacks of the Anti-Atlas, descending into the fertile Souss Valley toward Taroudant, affectionately known as "The Little Marrakech." Step back in time as you enter this authentic, bustling market town, entirely enclosed by ancient fortifications.
Check into your boutique Riad and unwind.
In the late afternoon, opt for a nostalgic horse-drawn carriage ride along the towering, 16th-century mud-brick Taroudant Ramparts. Watch as the setting sun turns the massive defensive walls and crenelated towers a deep, glowing crimson, bringing your day to a majestic close.

Depart Taroudant and drive west through the fertile plains of the Souss Valley, entering the UNESCO Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve. This unique, semi-desert ecosystem is the global birthplace of the rare argan tree.
Along the roadside forest, keep your eyes on the gnarled branches to witness the surreal sight of local goats climbing high into the argan trees to feast on the bitter fruit—a bizarre and iconic spectacle of Southern Morocco's rural survival.
Stop nearby at an authentic, local women’s argan oil cooperative. Here, observe the meticulous, labor-intensive process as Berber women crack the rock-hard nuts by hand using ancient stone techniques to extract the liquid gold used worldwide for culinary and cosmetic luxury.
Continue your journey to the coastal hub of Agadir, where your route shifts sharply north onto the dramatic Atlantic coastal highway. The drive transforms into a stunning visual theater of sheer cliffs plunging into the crashing ocean waves on one side, and the rolling golden dunes of the Atlantic desert on the other.
In the late afternoon, roll into the historic, whitewashed ramparts of Essaouira, the "Wind City of Africa."
Check into your hotel or authentic Riad, and spend your evening wandering the relaxed, blue-and-white lanes of the UNESCO-listed sea-facing Medina, listening to the distant calls of seagulls and the crashing Atlantic tide.

Today after breakfast, bid farewell to the Atlantic breeze and board your vehicle for the final inland drive across the Haouz Plain toward Marrakech. Watch the landscape shift from coastal shrubs back into the parched earth and distant, snow-capped silhouettes of the High Atlas Mountains.
Upon arrival in Marrakech, your driver will transfer you directly to the Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) to check in for your departure flight.
As you prepare to board, carry with you the unforgettable memories of your Moroccan expedition—from the roaring 4x4 dunes of Erg Chigaga and the medieval tribal strongholds of the Anti-Atlas to the wind-swept ramparts of the Atlantic coast.
Your 9 Days South Morocco Tour ends! Safe travels onward.
Thank you for choosing Asia Odyssey Travel (AOT) for your 9 Days South Morocco Tour from Marrakech. We are always dedicated to serving you and look forward to welcoming you again for your future trips to China/Asia/Africa.
The geography of the South is stunning but expansive. Expect a mix of smooth modern highways, winding mountain switchbacks through the Anti-Atlas, and rugged desert tracks. The most adventurous section lies between Erg Chigaga and Foum Zguid, where you cross the dried salt flats of Lake Iriqui and vast rocky hammadas. A premium 4×4 vehicle and an experienced local driver are essential for navigating these remote landscapes comfortably and safely.
Unlike conventional museums, ancient collective granaries such as Agadir d’Aït Kine remain protected ancestral structures managed by local communities. Access is often controlled by hereditary custodians, and entry usually requires prior coordination. With local arrangements, visitors may have the opportunity to explore these remarkable fortified storehouses and learn about centuries-old Amazigh traditions firsthand.
You may encounter this iconic sight in the argan forests between Taroudant and Essaouira within the UNESCO Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve. Goats naturally climb argan trees to feed on the fruit. To support responsible tourism, we recommend observing animals in their natural environment and avoiding staged roadside displays where goats may be positioned solely for tourist photographs.
Early morning and late afternoon provide the most dramatic lighting conditions. Napoleon’s Hat (Le Chapeau de Napoléon) is beautifully illuminated shortly after sunrise, while the vibrant colors of Jean Vérame’s Painted Rocks become more vivid during the golden hours. Midday sunlight tends to flatten textures and reduce contrast across the landscape.
Very much so. Essaouira's identity is shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, maritime heritage, and a long tradition of artists and musicians. Its relaxed atmosphere, blue-and-white architecture, and oceanfront promenades provide a refreshing contrast to the bustling souks of Marrakech and the remote silence of the Sahara, making it one of Morocco’s most distinctive destinations.
After crossing the desert tracks and the Lake Iriqui basin, many travelers appreciate a relaxing afternoon in Foum Zguid. Most quality accommodations offer swimming pools and comfortable facilities where you can unwind after the desert crossing. Some properties also provide traditional hammam experiences, an excellent way to relax muscles and wash away the fine desert dust.
Layering is the key to comfort. Lightweight clothing is ideal for warm desert areas such as Tata and Foum Zguid, while mountain regions around Tafraoute can become surprisingly cool, especially after sunset. We recommend breathable fabrics, sun protection, a windproof jacket, a warm fleece layer, and sturdy walking shoes suitable for rocky terrain.
Authentic women-led argan cooperatives focus primarily on education and traditional production methods rather than aggressive sales. Visitors can observe the extraction process, learn about the cultural importance of argan oil, and ask questions without obligation to purchase. Buying products is entirely optional, although many travelers appreciate supporting local communities directly.
Yes. Taroudant’s impressive 16th-century ramparts stretch for approximately 7.5 kilometers, making a complete circuit a substantial walk. Many visitors prefer a traditional horse-drawn carriage (calèche) ride, particularly in the late afternoon when the warm sunlight enhances the color of the ancient mud-brick walls and creates excellent photography opportunities.
