Is Taiwan Worth Visiting: 10 Reasons Why I Love Taiwan

Written by Lydia|Updated: 2025-07-23

Okay, so you wanna know is Taiwan worth visiting? Seriously, if you're thinking about your next trip, I believe Taiwan should be at the top of your list.

It's one of those "small but mighty" places that just gets under your skin. For so many travelers, it becomes like a second home!

Come to Taiwan! You'll find diverse sights (like Taipei 101, Alishan, Qingshui Cliff, etc.), outdoor fun (e.g. hiking, cycling & swimming), and tasting food (like Tea Eggs and Bubble Tea!). It's also budget-friendly, super safe, and easy to get around thanks to its EASY public transport.

In this article, I want to tell you why I love Taiwan so much, and show you the places that truly touch your heart – not just the famous spots, but the experiences, the warmth, and the memories you'll make.

Visa-free Travel to China:

Starting December 2024, transit travelers from 54 countries can stay for up to 10 days without a visa. Better yet, visitors from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and several Asian countries enjoy 30-day visa-free stays through 2025.

US, UK, and Canadian passport holders can visit for 6 days visa-free. Learn more details about How to Visit China Without a Visa in 2025>>

Taiwan packs so much diverse scenery into one place!

From the towering Taipei 101 to the lively vibe of Longshan Temple, the stunning blue of Sun Moon Lake, chasing sunsets at Kenting's Baishawan beach, or hiking through Taroko Gorge's marble canyons... I'm always amazed by Taiwan's diverse beauty!

Seriously, one minute you're snapping photos of the incredible Queen's Head at Yehliu Geopark, and the next you are rushing up Alishan to catch a sunrise over a sea of clouds – this island feels like someone cranked up the 'wow' factor!

2. Outdoor Adventures Galore: I Always Find Fun Outside in Taiwan

Also, Taiwan is packed with fun outdoors for everyone!

You can enjoy an easy bike ride around Sun Moon Lake (that 3.4km path in an hour is my favorite chill out), go beach hopping in Kenting (Baishawan for swimming, Nanwan for diving, or Dawan for watersports), or take the Alishan Forest Railway, climbing from 30-2216 meters!

For a real thrill, try rafting the Xiuguluan River or tackling the 'Taiwanese Alps' on the Nenggao Andongpo traverse. These are for PRO outdoorsmen!

My adrenaline gets a workout in Taiwan! One time, I was kayaking off Qingshui Cliff, paddling into the Pacific Ocean, and that same night, I was chilling at Qixingtan, stacking stones and just listening to the waves. What a day!

3. So Much Culture: Taiwan Just Feels Like Home

Taiwan is such a diverse and accepting place!

I can lose myself for hours at the Taipei Palace Museum, just imagining the stories behind artifacts like the Jadeite Cabbage. Or see couples holding hands under Kaohsiung's rainbow landmark. Taiwan was the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019. I love Taiwan's acceptance.

To immerse into the diverse cultures, you can explore Jiufen's mountain town, looking for that 'Spirited Away' teahouse, or listen to ancient songs from tribal elders at the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village at Sun Moon Lake.

Don't miss the Kaohsiung Pride parade in November!

4. Modern & Budget-Friendly: My Wallet Loves Taiwan!

Here's the biggest secret for why I love Taiwan: Taiwan feels as modern as Japan, but it's as affordable as Thailand. My wallet seriously loves it!

You can feast like a king for practically nothing – like a bomb scallion pancake for NT$50 and a papaya milk for another NT$50? That's a full meal for just NT$100!

Hostels are a steal at NT$300-500 a night. And those Michelin Bib Gourmand snacks? Just NT$50−100 each. Oh, and the fruit markets are amazing–pick three bags of mangoes, lotus mist, or custard apples for only NT$100!

5. Foodie Heaven: Taiwan's Night Markets Ate My Abs!

Prepare your stomach, because Taiwan's night markets are a battlefield of deliciousness!

One bite of a piping hot taro yolk cake or grandma's rice ball stuffed with crispy fried dough sticks, and any thought of dieting just disappears! Seriously, my abs have decided to take a permanent vacation after my last trip to Taiwan!

Each city has its gems:

  • For Taipei, it's Raohe's medicated pork ribs, Ningxia's taro balls, or Tonghua's hot and cold tangyuan.
  • In Taichung, you have to try Fengjia's 'small sausage in large sausage' and Minglun egg pancakes.
  • And don't even get me started on Kaohsiung's Ruifeng, with its angel chicken steak and papaya milk!

6. Bubble Tea Kingdom: This is Where My Favorite Drink Lives!

Oh, my sweet addiction! Taiwan is the undisputed home of bubble tea, and visiting Chun Shui Tang, its birthplace, feels like a pilgrimage for me.

It's such a brilliant mix of East meets West: Chinese tea, Western milk, local tapioca pearls, all shaken up like a cocktail. It's truly the 'Coca-Cola of the East!'

Taiwan has a National Bubble Tea Day on April 30th! You can grab a huge 50 Lan boba milk tea for just NT$50 – and adding double pearls is just basic respect, right?

And the varieties keep evolving – from classic boba (like Chun Shui Tang) to brown sugar fresh milk (like TrueDan), or even fruit teas with konjac jelly (like DaYuanZi). This is where my favorite drink lives, and I love every single sip!

7. Getting Around is a Breeze: Taiwan's Public Transport is SO Easy

Welcome to Taiwan

You know what makes exploring Taiwan so effortless? The public transport! I truly love how Taiwan makes getting to & around so simple and stress-free.

First, Taiwan rolls out the red carpet for visitors. Over 60 countries get 90-day visa-free entry, and at Taoyuan Airport, you can get through immigration and grab luggage in just 20 minutes with their e-gates.

Plus, they even have a time-limited (Sept. 2025) lottery for NT$5,000 travel prizes – talk about being spoiled!

Also, Taiwan's public transportation is EASY. You just tap your EasyCard, and boom – you're good to go all over the island!

The MRT in Taipei and Kaohsiung, the TRA trains, buses, and even YouBikes (first 30 mins are free!) make it a joy to navigate. You can even use your EasyCard at convenience stores or Starbucks.

8. It's Safe: I Never Worry When I'm Out in Taiwan

Taiwan is quite safe. This is a big reason for me to travel to Taiwan!

Seriously, I can walk through Ximending at 2 AM with my bag open, and people joke that in Taiwan, that's called 'anti-rain, not anti-theft!'

It's ranked as the 3rd safest travel destination globally by Numbeo in 2024.

That sense of safety is so real – you can borrow umbrellas for free at MRT stations, pay taxes or send packages at convenience stores, and even get police escorts for cash withdrawals if you need to!

9. Totally Chill Vibes: Taiwan Just Helps Me Relax

You know, sometimes after all the exploring, we just need to breathe. And Taiwan's got that perfect chill vibe.

I love starting my morning soaking my feet in a free hot spring bath at Yangmingshan, watching the mist rise, then spending the afternoon just zoning out at Beitou Library – it's one of the world's most beautiful green buildings!

Here're more chilling spots!

Whether it's cycling through Taipei's riverside paths, taking a deep breath of fresh air in Alishan's forests, listening to the waves at Qixingtan, or even doing a fun DIY activity like making dough figurines in Yilan's National Center for Traditional Arts, Taiwan really helps me unwind and recharge.

10. The People! Seriously, Taiwan's Locals Are the Best.

Finally, the people! This is probably my favorite thing about Taiwan. They just treat strangers like family, and it's the warmest feeling ever!

I remember getting lost once, and a sweet grandpa pulled out a hand-drawn map and gave me a mango! Another time, a B&B owner drove me out in the middle of the night so I could chase the 'Blue Tears' phenomenon.

Here come more little moments: the 7-Eleven clerk who calls a taxi for you, the night market boss who insists on reheating your soup because it's not hot enough, or the old man on the train who gives up his seat saying 'You've been out all day, you must be tired!'

Seriously, Taiwan's locals are just the best, and they make me love this island even more!
