Day 2 Beijing Living History Lesson | Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, Hutong Family Hands-on Activities

After breakfast, your private guide and driver will meet you at your hotel to begin your Beijing adventure.

Tiananmen Square

Begin your morning at the world’s largest public square, the symbolic heart of modern China. Your guide will share captivating stories of its historical significance while navigating the security checks for you. It is the perfect spot for your first family portrait, with the iconic Tiananmen Rostrum as your backdrop.

The Forbidden City

Then, step through the Meridian Gate into the world’s largest imperial palace. Instead of a dry history lesson, we lead your family through a "scavenger hunt" to discover architectural secrets and hidden bronze lions. Explore the majestic Hall of Supreme Harmony and the intimate Imperial Garden. Our expert guide will focus on the fascinating lives of the young emperors to keep children of all ages fully engaged and curious.

Jingshan Park

Take a gentle 10-minute walk up to the top of Jingshan Park. From the Wanchun Pavilion, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic view of the entire Forbidden City. Seeing the vast sea of golden-tiled roofs helps the whole family grasp the sheer scale of the palace you just explored.

AOT Special Arrangement: Hutong Life & Heritage Workshop

In the afternoon, enjoy fun and immersive Hutong cultural experience with your family. Start with leisurely rickshaw ride through the charming Shichahai Area, known as the largest and best-preserved historic neighborhood in central Beijing. As the rickshaw winds through the narrow alleyways, you’ll pass traditional courtyard homes, the scenic Yinding Bridge, and lively bar streets. This area perfectly blends lakeside scenery, former princes’ mansions, celebrity residences, and old Beijing life—rich in atmosphere and full of local charm.

Next, visit a local Hutong family. Sit down with residents who have lived here for generations and listen to their stories about life in the Hutongs - how traditions are passed down, how neighbors support each other, and how modern life blends with heritage.

After the family visit, your children (and adults, too!) can enjoy a hands-on cultural workshop. Choose from: Chinese calligraphy, Peking Opera mask painting, Traditional paper-cutting.

Day 3 Beijing Great Wall Classroom | Temple of Heaven, Mutianyu Great Wall (Toboggan), Beijing Duck Dinner (Optional)

Temple of Heaven

Begin your morning at the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks. This Taoist temple is renowned for its harmonious layout and symbolic architecture. For over 500 years, it was the sacred site where 22 emperors performed grand ceremonies to pray for good harvests.

As you stroll through the park, you’ll see locals practicing Tai Chi, dancing, and playing traditional music—a wonderful glimpse into everyday life in Beijing.

iOptional:

If your family would like to learn Tai Chi from a local master, please let us know in advance.)

Inside the complex, admire the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, a grand circular structure with triple-eaved blue roofs. Don't miss the Echo Wall and Triple Sound Stones, both famous for their clever acoustic designs.

Mutianyu Great Wall

Drive approximately 1.5-2 hours to the Mutianyu Great Wall, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved sections of the wall. Originally built in the 6th century and later restored during the Ming Dynasty, Mutianyu is famous for its 23 watchtowers, lush scenery, and fewer crowds.

Recommended Route: Chairlift Up – Eastern Route – Toboggan Down

Take a chairlift up to the 6th watchtower and begin your memorable family hike along the wall’s eastern route. Surrounded by pine and cypress forests, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views as the wall winds majestically over the mountain ridges. Hike toward Zhengguantai (Watchtower No. 4) and Dajiaolou (Watchtower No. 1)—two of the most scenic spots perfect for family photos.

For extra fun, descend via an exciting toboggan ride (1,580 meters long). You can control the speed yourself for a thrilling yet safe experience!

iNote:

Children under 10 or below the minimum height must ride with an adult.

Alternative Option (For families with seniors or infants):

If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you can take a fully enclosed cable car up and down the wall, following the western route. This option is ideal for families with older travelers or infants. Just let us know your preference in advance.

Optional Dinner: Peking Duck Experience

End the day with classic Peking Duck dinner at a famous local restaurant. The crispy skin, tender meat, and the fun of wrapping it with scallions, cucumber, and sweet sauce in a thin pancake is always a hit with kids. It is a truly delicious way to wrap up your day!

Day 4 Beijing to Xi'an by High Speed Train | Optional: Hanfu Experience & Grand Tang Everbright City

After breakfast, your private driver will transfer you to the train station. Board the high-speed train to Xi’an, the ancient capital of China.

The 4-hour (or about 4.5 hours) journey is comfortable, stress-free. It’s a great opportunity for your family to relax, or watch the changing landscape from your window. Upon arrival in Xi’an, our local Xian guide will meet you at the station and transfer you to your hotel for check-in.

iEvening Recommendation: Hanfu Experience & The Grand Tang Everbright City (Optional)

After a short rest in Xi’an, head out for some evening excitement. Enjoy a family Tang Dynasty makeover by trying on traditional Hanfu or Tang-style costumes. Day 5 Xian Warriors & Bricks | Terracotta Warriors, DIY Your Own Mini-Warrior, Ancient City Wall (Optional Biking), Muslim Quarter (Optional Puppet Show)

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick up your family at your hotel. About 1 hour’s drive, you will arrive at Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum.

Step into the underground headquarters of China’s first emperor. For children, this museum is a giant, real-life "historical puzzle." Kids love spotting the unique facial expressions, hairstyles, and even the tread on the shoes of these 2,000-year-old soldiers. It’s like a massive "Where’s Waldo" in clay. We guide your family to the best photo spots to see the vast scale of Pit 1 with less crowds, making the history feel cinematic and alive.

AOT’s Family Highlight Design: DIY Your Own Mini-Warrior

Go beyond the viewing platforms. Near the museum into a workshop, kids can roll up their sleeves and use ancient techniques to mold their own Mini-Warrior. They will learn how to press clay into molds, carve details, and take home a personalized souvenir they actually made themselves.

In this afternoon, get back to Xian downtown to visit Ancient City Wall. Measuring 14 kilometers, this is the most complete and best-preserved ancient city wall in the world. It serves as a massive "Elevated Playground" for families. Standing 12 meters high, it offers a safe, traffic-free space where kids can run freely while parents enjoy the contrast between the old inner city and modern skyline.

iOptional Cycling Adventure for Families:

Children aged 8 and older can ride their own bicycles. For younger children (under 8), we offer tandem bikes so they can ride safely with a parent. We recommend a 45-minute "half-loop" ride - it is a suitable length to keep the experience fun and energetic for the whole family.

Next, dive into the sensory feast of the Muslim Quarter. The vibrant atmosphere, colorful stalls, and friendly vendors offer a unique "Healing Power" through food.

iOptional Shadow Puppet Show for Kids:

Walk and explore, you will arrive at Gao's Grand Courtyard. Sit back in a traditional Ming-style garden to watch Shadow Puppet Show. These "Ancient Cartoons" use light, leather puppets, and high-pitched music to tell folk legends, providing a magical, low-tech entertainment break for the kids.

Day 6 Xi’an to Chengdu by High-Speed Train | From Ancient Capital to Panda City

Free Time Ideas in Chengdu:

Step into the charming, tree-lined lanes of Kuanzhai Alley. Discover the history of old Chengdu and browse the numerous panda-themed shops - you’ll quickly realize you’ve arrived in the "Panda City." You can sit down in a tea house for a cup of coffee.

iOptional: Chengdu Hot Pot Experience for Dinner

Celebrate your arrival in the "City of Gastronomy" with a legendary Chengdu hot pot dinner. For families, we recommend a "Yuan-Yang" (Twin-Flavor) pot, featuring a mild, creamy bone broth for the kids and a spicy Szechuan broth for the adventurous. It is a fun dinner for family activity.

Day 7 Chengdu Panda Fun | Chengdu Panda Base, Chunxi Road (IFS Climbing Panda), Renmin Park, Jinli Old Street

On this day, your family need to get up early. Panda time comes! Your first stop will be Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. You’ll see the iconic Giant Pandas lounging in bamboo groves and the playful, fox-like Red Pandas roaming in the trees. It is a heartwarming experience for children to observe "Panda Kindergarten," where cubs tumble and play.

iPro-Tip: Managing the "He Hua" Craze:

The star panda, He Hua, is incredibly popular. Be prepared for long queues (often 1-2 hours). If the wait is too long for the kids, we suggest heading to the Swan Lake for a peaceful stroll or exploring the Panda Museum to learn about conservation through interactive exhibits.

After panda base visiting, head back to downtown at Chunxi Road. Look up at the IFS Building to find the famous Climbing Panda sculpture hanging from the roof. It’s a fantastic, quirky photo op for the family. This area showcases the futuristic side of Chengdu, where high fashion meets playful public art.

In this afternoon, your family will relax at Renmin Park (People's Park). Step into the "Living Room" of Chengdu. This is where you’ll truly feel the local rhythm. Relax at a Traditional Teahouse while sitting on bamboo chairs. It’s the perfect place for parents to sip jasmine tea while the family observes the local Mahjong Games, the social heartbeat of the city.

iFamily Adventure (Optional):

For the brave, try a professional Ear Cleaning (a unique Chengdu heritage) or simply soak in the lively atmosphere of the "Matchmaking Corner."

End your day at this buzzing ancient-style district at Jinli Old Street. The red lanterns and wooden architecture feel like a scene from a movie.

Watch the mesmerizing Sichuan Opera with its famous "Face-Changing" magic. Along the street, keep an eye out for Blow Sugar Art (creating edible animals from liquid sugar) and other intangible cultural heritage crafts. It’s a sensory finale where kids can snack on local treats and pick up handmade souvenirs.

Day 9 Shanghai Magic City of Tomorrow | Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Tower, Yu Garden & Yuyuan Bazaar, Wukang Road, the Bund

In this morning, let’s read Shanghai through history. First visit Shanghai Museum. For kids, we focus on the Ancient Bronze Gallery - home to the "King of Bronzes," the Da Ke Ding. They will be fascinated by the intricate dragon patterns and ancient "secret codes" (inscriptions) carved 3,000 years ago. It’s a great way to see how Chinese art evolved from mystery to beauty.

Next, unveil Shanghai’s modern face. Prepare for a "Vertical Journey" to Shanghai Tower. Take the world's fastest elevator to the 118th-floor Observation Deck. Standing at the top of China's tallest building, the family will get a bird's-eye view of the winding Huangpu River. It feels like standing in the clouds, offering a futuristic perspective that leaves every child (and parent) in awe.

Later, move your legs to the other bank of Huangpu River. Explore Yu Garden & Yuyuan Bazaar. Step into a classic Ming Dynasty garden. Kids love navigating the Nine-Turn Bridge, designed to confuse "ghosts" who can only walk in straight lines.

Afterward, dive into the bustling Yuyuan Bazaar. It’s time for the Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumpling) challenge! Kids will love the "magic" of soup inside a dumpling—just remember to "sip the soup first." It’s a delicious, interactive lunch the whole family will enjoy.

With a short drive, get to Wukang Road. Escape the skyscrapers for the tree-lined streets of the Former French Concession. Take a photo with the iconic Wukang Mansion, which looks like a giant ship anchored on the corner. This is a trendy, car-free-friendly area where families can enjoy a scoop of artisanal gelato, browse quirky designer boutiques, and enjoy the leisurely pace of local "Shanghai life."

End your journey with a signature Family Walk along The Bund. As the sun sets and the lights flicker on, watch the city transform into a neon wonderland. On one side, you have the majestic colonial buildings (the "Gallery of World Architecture"); on the other, the glowing space-age skyline. It’s the perfect, safe space for a relaxed stroll to celebrate the final night of your great China adventure.
