1. Early Sakura Chasing: February–March Blooms, Avoiding Peak Season Crowds
Many people don't know that cherry blossoms in Japan don't bloom nationwide simultaneously. The earliest blooms are the Kawazu Zakura in the Izu Peninsula, starting around February 10th—more than a month earlier than Tokyo and Kyoto.
Kawazu Zakura is an early-blooming variety with deeper, pinker petals than the Somei Yoshino cherry, and a longer blooming period (up to one month). Every February, Kawazu Town in the Izu Peninsula hosts a cherry blossom festival, where both banks of the Kawazu River create a pink cherry blossom tunnel paired with golden rapeseed flowers—absolutely spectacular.
Besides Kawazu, Atami's plum groves and early sakura, and Izu Kogen's cherry blossom avenue are also excellent spots for February–March flower viewing.
Why Early Sakura Is Worth It:
- Far fewer tourists than March–April peak season
- Hotel prices significantly cheaper
- No queuing or fighting for photo spots
- Kawazu Zakura blooms up to one month—much longer than Somei Yoshino
AOT Approach: Daily Bloom Monitoring & Flexible Adjustments
Since early sakura bloom timing is harder to predict than late sakura, our Tokyo-based local team monitors bloom conditions daily and flexibly adjusts which viewing spots to visit. If Kawazu hasn't bloomed yet, we go to Atami first; if both have bloomed, we can visit both locations.
This route also includes Hakone hot springs, where you can soak in onsen while viewing Mt. Fuji. Early spring Hakone has much fewer tourists too. Departures start from just 1 person, perfect for travelers with flexible schedules who want to avoid massive crowds.
Best For: Travelers with flexible schedules · Those who hate crowds · Couples seeking quiet scenery · Budget-conscious travelers
Departure: From 1 person · Bloom Period: Mid-February – Mid-March
2. Classic Golden Route: Tokyo–Mt. Fuji–Kyoto–Osaka Cherry Blossom Tour
If it's your first time in Japan and you want to visit the most iconic cherry blossom spots—Tokyo's Chidorigafuchi, Ueno Park, Kyoto's Philosopher's Path, Kiyomizu Temple, Osaka Castle Park—the Golden Route is the best choice. The cherry trees at these locations are decades or even centuries old, with abundant blossoms and classic scenery.
Peak bloom typically occurs from late March to early April. Kyoto's cherry blossoms generally bloom 3–5 days later than Tokyo's.
Important Note
The Golden Route is Japan's most popular tourist route. During sakura season, Kyoto hotels are fully booked six months in advance, Shinkansen seats are tight, and popular temples (like Kiyomizu-dera) require timed entry reservations. Choosing an experienced tour operator is essential.
AOT Small Group Advantage
Small groups (maximum 16 people) depart at 7 AM, reaching popular spots before tour buses arrive—your photos won't show crowds. Guides take you to secret small Kyoto temples that are beautiful but uncrowded in the morning. Our 20-person Tokyo operations team handles complex bookings and sudden adjustments throughout sakura season.
3. Family Cherry Blossom Tours: Sakura + Disneyland / Universal Studios
When traveling to Japan with kids, cherry blossoms alone aren't enough—children want to visit Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan. Our family tour routes combine sakura viewing with theme parks while considering children's stamina and interests.
We don't schedule full days walking through temples. Instead, we visit places like Ueno Park (with a zoo and playground) and Nara Park (feeding deer is very popular with kids)—spots with interactive elements. We also arrange hands-on activities like samurai sword experiences and sushi-making classes.
Family Travel Details:
- Vehicles: Toyota Alphard (7–8 seater vans) with space for strollers, car seats, and all family luggage
- Theme park tickets & FastPasses booked in advance—sakura season coincides with Japanese spring break, making tickets hard to get
- Pacing built around children's stamina with rest time included
4. Romantic Couple Hot Spring Cherry Blossom Tours: Sakura + Hakone Onsen
For honeymoons or couple trips seeking intimate, high-quality experiences, small group routes combined with traditional Japanese hot spring ryokan are the best choice. Our recommended routes all include Hakone hot springs—where you can stay in traditional tatami rooms, enjoy private outdoor hot springs, and soak while viewing Mt. Fuji.
Hakone during cherry blossom season is also beautiful, with sakura reflecting in Lake Ashi. Small groups (maximum 16 people) depart at 6–7 AM for places like Kyoto's Philosopher's Path and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove when there are virtually no tourists—perfect for photos.
5. Deep Cultural Immersion Cherry Blossom Tours: 10–14 Day Multi-Destination Exploration
If you're deeply interested in Japanese culture and not satisfied with just viewing and photographing cherry blossoms, but want to understand the history, religion, and traditions behind them, then 10+ day deep tours are more suitable.
These routes visit lesser-known cultural sites like Uji's tea plantations, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and Kurashiki's Edo-era streets. You can also experience tea ceremonies, kimono wearing, and temple stays.
What Makes Deep Cultural Tours Different:
- Uji: Visit Byodoin Temple (on the 10-yen coin) and tea plantations—see how matcha is actually grown
- Hiroshima: Peace Memorial Museum and Miyajima's floating torii gate
- Kurashiki: Edo-period white-walled merchant streets, beautifully preserved
- Himeji: Japan's most beautiful castle framed by cherry blossoms
- Kobe: European-style architecture and harbor atmosphere
