Classic Japan Family Travel Route: Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka

For families visiting Japan for the first time with children, a classic route usually begins in Tokyo, then continues to Mt. Fuji or Hakone, followed by Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka.

This route allows travelers to see some of Japan's most iconic cities and cultural landmarks, while also including many experiences that are enjoyable for families.

Tokyo: A City of Anime Culture and Theme Parks

Tokyo is often the first stop for family trips to Japan.

Besides famous landmarks like Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo Tower, and the Imperial Palace, Tokyo also has many attractions that children find exciting. For example, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea are major highlights for many families.

In Asia Odyssey Travel's family itineraries, time in Tokyo is often planned around experiences that are especially suitable for children. This may include visiting anime culture districts, interactive exhibitions, or relaxed city sightseeing. These activities help keep children interested and engaged rather than simply visiting traditional tourist spots.

Tokyo's wide variety of food, shopping, and cultural experiences also ensures that both parents and children can find something they enjoy.

Mt. Fuji and Hakone: Natural Scenery and Hot Spring Experiences

From Tokyo, many families travel to the Mt. Fuji and Hakone region.

Mt. Fuji is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Japan, while Hakone is well known for its lakes, hot springs, and mountain scenery. Taking a boat cruise on Lake Ashi or enjoying distant views of Mt. Fuji often becomes one of the most memorable moments of a family trip.

In family travel itineraries, this part of the journey is usually arranged at a slower pace, allowing both children and parents to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Kyoto: Experiencing Traditional Japanese Culture

Kyoto is one of Japan's most representative historic and cultural cities.

The city is home to many famous landmarks, such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the traditional Gion district. For families, Kyoto is not only a place to visit temples but also an opportunity to experience traditional cultural activities, such as wearing kimono for photos or learning about traditional Japanese lifestyles.

In some of Asia Odyssey Travel's family itineraries, cultural experiences that are suitable for children are also included. These activities help children better understand Japanese culture during the trip rather than simply visiting sightseeing spots.

Nara: A Favorite Stop for Children to Meet the Deer

Nara is often one of the most relaxing and enjoyable stops for families.

Nara Park is home to more than a thousand friendly deer. Children can interact with them at close range and feed them special deer crackers. This kind of interaction with animals and nature is very different from city sightseeing and often becomes one of the most memorable moments of a child's trip to Japan.

Beyond the deer, Nara also offers many important cultural landmarks. One of the most famous is Todai-ji Temple, which houses one of the world's largest wooden structures. Inside the Great Buddha Hall stands an enormous bronze Buddha statue, and many families spend time exploring this historic site.

In Asia Odyssey Travel's family routes, Nara is usually arranged as a relaxed day trip between Kyoto and Osaka. The schedule is not rushed, allowing children more time to walk through Nara Park, interact with the deer, and experience traditional Japanese culture.

Family Tip

Why Nara Works Well for Families

This slower pace and interactive experience makes Nara especially suitable for family travel. The combination of animal interaction at Nara Park and cultural exploration at Todai-ji Temple creates a well-balanced half-day experience that children genuinely enjoy.

Osaka: Theme Parks and City Entertainment

If Nara is the most enjoyable nature experience for children, Osaka is often the most exciting stop for families.

One of Osaka's most popular attractions is Universal Studios Japan. The park features themed areas such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World, making it an unforgettable experience for families traveling with children.

Many families dedicate an entire day to visiting the park. For children especially, this immersive theme park experience often becomes one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Beyond theme parks, Osaka itself is a lively city with a vibrant atmosphere. Areas like Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi are famous for their street food and local culture. Families often enjoy trying Osaka specialties such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) while walking through these lively districts.

In Asia Odyssey Travel's family itineraries, Osaka usually serves as the final stop of the journey. After experiencing cultural landmarks and natural scenery earlier in the trip, the city's entertainment and theme parks provide an energetic and fun ending to the family adventure.

Why Many Families Choose Japan Small Group Tours

When traveling with children, the size of the group can significantly influence the overall experience.

Large tour groups often move quickly and have limited flexibility to adjust the itinerary for families. Small group tours, on the other hand, allow the trip to feel more relaxed.

Asia Odyssey Travel's Japan small group tours typically have a maximum of 16 travelers per group. This size maintains the convenience of a guided tour while still allowing guides to provide more attention and support.

For families, small group travel usually means:

Small Group Benefits for Families

  • A more relaxed travel pace
  • More personalized assistance from guides
  • Children can participate more easily in activities
  • A more comfortable overall travel experience

Local Team Support for a Smoother Journey

Family travel often involves many details, such as hotel arrangements, transportation between cities, and attraction reservations.

Asia Odyssey Travel has local teams in Japan that coordinate hotels, vehicles, and guides directly. They can also adjust itineraries based on seasonal highlights, such as cherry blossom season or autumn foliage.

For families, this kind of local support helps reduce uncertainty during the trip and allows parents to focus more on enjoying the journey with their children.

For my Bhutan trip I chose Asia Odyssey Travel (AOT) because searching in the web, they seemed to offer the best value for money. And now after having realised the trip with them I did not experience any bit of disappointment; on the contrary, my short 4 nights’ trip exceeded my expectations. I would like to thank everybody who contributed to my excellent travel experience, in particular to: -Ms. Cici, my travel counselor at AOT, who designed my trip and answered all my questions promptly with great kindness and always a positive attitude.-My local Bhutanese tour guide Mr. Phurba and my driver Mr. Nimado (apologies if I made spelling mistakes in the names), who did their best to not to leave out any elements from my original itinerary although my arrival plane (Drukair) had a delay of almost 5 hours. Mr. Phurba is a very experienced and knowledgeable tour guide, especially about Buddhism, who also knows the best spots for a photo!-Entire staff of AOT as well as the local Bhutanese tour agency who planned and executed the trip. I was very happy with my hotels and my restaurants, especially those for lunch. Thanks for everything again read more
