Day 2 Guangzhou City Tour | Yuexiu Park, Nanyue King Mausoleum Museum, Beijing Road, Zhujiang New Town, Pearl River

The Ancient Central Axis: Tracing Back to the "Origin" of Guangzhou

Guangzhou’s ancient central axis is a millennia-old testament to its historical depth. Stretching through Yuexiu Park and Beijing Road, this "historical vein" traces back 2,000 years to the Nanyue Kingdom. Established during the Qin and Han dynasties, this foundational capital marks the beginning of an enduring narrative that still defines the city's identity today.

Start your morning like a local at Yuexiu Park, a landmark centered around Yuexiu Mountain. Once the retreat of the Nanyue King 2,000 years ago and later a workspace for Sun Yat-sen, this lush park seamlessly blends history with leisure. Highlights include the iconic Five Rams Sculpture, which symbolizes Guangzhou’s legendary origins and spirit of gratitude. Nearby, you can explore the 600-year-old Ming Dynasty City Wall, where ancient banyan roots dramatically intertwine with historic stones.

You can also summit to visit Zhenhai Tower (镇海楼), a 600-year-old landmark housing the Guangzhou Museum. Enjoy panoramic views of the Pearl River and Baiyun Mountain. Nearby stands the Sun Yat-sen Monument, designed by Lu Yanzhi to honor the revolutionary leader. Together with the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, these iconic structures form a unified symbol of Guangzhou’s modern history along the city’s central axis.

Then, delve into the Nanyue King Mausoleum Museum (南越王墓博物馆) to witness the 2,000-year-old tomb of Emperor Zhao Mo. As the best-preserved stone chamber in Lingnan, it offers vital insights into ancient Nanyue culture. Don't miss the legendary Jade Burial Garment, crafted from over 2,000 jade pieces, and an impressive collection of ceramic pillows, highlighting the exquisite craftsmanship and historical power of this regional kingdom.

Head south to Beijing Road (北京路), a vibrant pedestrian street blending local cuisine with a "millennium-old pathway." Beneath transparent glass panels, you can view 11 ancient road layers spanning five dynasties. This historical axis also features the Nanyue Palace Exhibition, the grand City God Temple, and the magnificent Dafo Temple.

The New Central Axis: Embracing the "Future" of Guangzhou

Transitioning from the ancient axis, the New Central Axis in Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) epitomizes Guangzhou’s modern ambition. This vibrant CBD features the iconic "Guangzhou Three-Piece Set": the sleek IFC Tower, majestic CTF Finance Center, and the 600-meter Canton Tower.

At the heart of the New Central Axis lies Huacheng Square (花城广场), a sprawling urban park framed by architectural marvels like Zaha Hadid’s Guangzhou Opera House, the Guangzhou Library, and the Guangdong Provincial Museum. From here, you can admire the iconic Canton Tower across the river. In the evening, the square transforms into a vibrant spectacle of light shows and shimmering reflections against the city's modern skyline.

Finally, enjoy a scenic stroll along the Pearl River (珠江), particularly as night falls. The shimmering city lights and the passing Pearl River Cruise create a breathtaking tableau, seamlessly blending Guangzhou’s ancient heritage with its modern vitality.

Optional Evening Activity: Experience the city’s magic with a Pearl River night cruise (about 60 minutes). Sailing between 7:00 and 10:00 PM, you’ll get the best seat in the house to admire the illuminated skyline. It’s a fantastic way to see the Canton Tower and the city’s glowing bridges reflecting off the water as you drift by.
