Your private driver will pick you up from your hotel in Marrakech at 8:00 AM. The drive from Marrakech to Essaouira takes about 3 hours (177 KM).
As we leave the vibrant energy of the city behind, we’ll head west across the Houaz Plains toward the village of Sidi Lmokhtar. We’ll pass through the unique landscape of Argan tree forests. Keep your camera ready - you might just spot the famous local goats climbing the trees to snack on Argan nuts, a truly rare and unforgettable sight.
We’ll make a stop at a local Argan oil cooperative to see how this "liquid gold" is made. You’ll learn about the traditional extraction methods that have made this oil famous for its culinary and cosmetic benefits.
If you enjoy fine wine, we can detour to the Val d’Argan vineyard. Established by a French winemaker, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy a glass of locally produced wine before we reach the coast.
Afternoon: Exploring Essaouira
Upon arrival, you’ll have a walking tour of this historic port city. You’ll wander through the winding alleys of the ancient Medina—a UNESCO World Heritage site—where the souks and artisan workshops offer a more relaxed pace than Marrakech. We’ll explore the Mellah (the old Jewish quarter) and climb the historic Kasbah, a military bastion that offers sweeping, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, we’ll head down to the bustling fishermen’s port, where the iconic blue boats line the shore and the catch of the day is brought in fresh.
Late Afternoon: Unwind by the Sea
After your tour, the rest of the day is yours to soak in Essaouira’s laid-back charm. You might choose to stroll along the Essaouira beach or find a seat at the Place Moulay Elhassan. It’s the perfect spot to sip a fresh mint tea or coffee while listening to the rhythmic, soulful sounds of traditional Gnawa music drifting through the square.

This was a group trip organised by Asia Odyssey Travel and I had booked with them for the 29th July tour. Overall it was a fantastic experience starting from the rail station pick up, the hotel stays, the food and the guide during each day. Ms. Freya as a guide was nice and a little sweet girl. We organized an 18-day tour across China with Asia Odyssey Travel, and it was an unforgettable experience. He helped us design a fully customized itinerary based on our preferences, adjusting the original proposals to suit our needs. Steven also stayed in touch throughout the trip to make sure everything went smoothly—and we even had the pleasure of meeting him in person during our stop in Yangshuo!
Our journey included many destinations: Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, Furong, Fenghuang, Guilin, Yangshuo, and Shanghai. We took two domestic flights and three trains, including two long-distance rides. In each location, we were met by a local English-speaking guide and a driver. We were truly impressed by the professionalism and kindness of every guide we had: Vincent in Beijing, Tina in Chengdu, Christine in Chongqing, Rachel in Zhangjiajie – Furong and Fenghuang, and Helen in Guilin. Each of them was knowledgeable, helpful, and a joy to spend time with.
Although we’re not usually the type to travel with organized tours, we wanted a good balance between guided experiences and time on our own. Asia Odyssey Travel was incredibly accommodating, allowing us the flexibility to explore independently while still taking care of all the logistics—like picking us up from airports or train stations and ensuring someone accompanied us to our hotels, which was especially valuable in a country where English is not widely spoken.

Navigating China has never been easy with Asia Odyssey Travel and the knowledgeable guides. Tani has been also very helpful and responsive to my queries and I’ve learned a lot on how things work in China. The itinerary is worth it but ensure you warm up before your tour because the explorations need a lot of walking.
