Day 2 Guangzhou | Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Lychee Bay,Yongqing Fang, Huacheng Square (Canton Tower Outside View)

Firstly, you will visit Chen Clan Ancestral Hall(陈家祠), a representation of the traditional Lingnan architecture and culture. The clan concept in the Lingnan region (which covers Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and parts of Fujian) is very strong, and people attach great importance to the worship and memorial of their ancestors. The ancestral hall is the place where people worship their ancestors and the carrier of the clan culture. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall stands as the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall-style architecture in China, earning it the title of the "Jewel of Lingnan Architectural Art". This majestic hall was collectively financed and constructed by the Chen clans from all 72 counties of Guangdong province and was fully completed in 1894. Spanning an impressive 15,000 square meters, it showcases the grandeur and prominence of Guangdong's predominant surname, Chen. However, the true marvel that has etched the hall's name in the annals of architectural history is its unparalleled decorative artistry. The hall showcases the "Three Carvings" (San Diao) - stone, brick, and wood carvings; the "Two Moldings" (Liang Su) – ceramic and lime sculptures; and additionally, the intricate cast ironwork and exquisite color paintings, together recognized as the "Seven Wonders" (Qi Jue). Each element, be it a wooden panel, a brick wall, or a stone pathway, is embellished with designs and motifs teeming with symbolism and folklore. Additionally, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, where you can witness traditional Guangdong crafts such as ivory carvings, jade sculptures, Guangdong embroidery, and Guangdong colored ceramics, etc.

Then follow in the footsteps of the local “Old Guang” residents, and take a leisurely walking along scenic Lychee Bay (荔枝湾). Its name was derived from the abundant lychee trees that once lined its banks, bearing sweet fruit each summer. Once the backyard garden of wealthy merchants in Xiguan, the bay is now a serene water town in the heart of the city. As you meander along the bay, you will soak in the surroundings with age-old banyan trees lining its shores and rickety wooden boats gently drifting on its calm waters, bordered by aged buildings and temples. You will also encounter several historical bridges, each with its unique architecture and backstory, and come across the quintessential "Xiguan Big Houses" and other traditional Cantonese architectures, showcasing the opulence of Guangzhou's bygone era.

After enjoying Guangdong yum cha, your next destination should be the Lychee Bay Grand Theater (荔枝湾大戏台). This theater serves as a venue for public benefit performances, to promote and preserve traditional Cantonese opera art forms. If your timing is right, you might be fortunate enough to catch a live performance. Nestled alongside Lychee Bay, the theater exudes a unique charm where the melodious chirping of birds harmoniously intertwines with the soulful rhythms of Cantonese opera echoing from the stage. Just a short distance away is the Lychee Bay Museum (荔枝湾博物馆), which showcases the unique cultural landscapes, folk customs, and historical narratives of Lychee Bay. Within its confines are three major exhibition areas. Notably, the Xiguan Folklore Hall is transformed from a quintessential Xiguan grand mansion. Through authentic household furnishings and scene displays, it partially recreates the traditional archetype of a Xiguan house, offering a close glimpse into the lifestyle, cultural ambiance, and daily scenarios of Xiguan residents of yesteryears.

Afterward, make your way to Yongqing Fang. Yongqing Fang(永庆坊) is located on the historically rich Enning Road (恩宁路), which boasts the longest and most intact qilou (骑楼) street in Guangzhou. The qilou, a hallmark of Guangzhou architecture, features a continuous covered walkway on the ground level with residential spaces above. This design, combining shopping and sheltered pedestrian access, epitomizes the city's blend of commerce and community. Post-renovation, Yongqing Fang manages to retain the vintage charm of old Guangzhou's Xiguan flavor, all the while infusing modern commercial artistry into its fabric. Strolling down Yongqing Fang, you're immediately embraced by a confluence of the old and the new. Rows of well-preserved, traditional Xiguan-style houses line the street, their facades exuding old-world charm, while their interiors house a myriad of trendy boutiques, art galleries, craft shops, and coffee joints, bringing a touch of contemporary urban chic to the historic surroundings.

Lastly, your guide will accompany you to the Huacheng Square(花城广场), is a sprawling green urban park and public space surrounded by landmarks like the Guangzhou Opera House, designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid, and the new Guangzhou Library, the Guangdong Provincial Museum. Most importantly, appreciate the slim outline of the iconic Canton Tower (广州塔) on the opposite bank of the Pearl River. The tower boasts a unique, slender, and curvaceous design, inspired by the idea of a twisting female figure. The tower is often referred to as "Xiao Man Yao," which means "young lady with a tight waist" in Chinese.

Day 3 Guangzhou to Guilin by Bullet Train | Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave

Today, your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel lobby, and escort you to the train station for your high speed train to Guilin (about 3 hours).

Welcome to Guilin, the most picturesque paradise in China! Upon your arrival at the train station in Guilin, the tour guide and driver will meet and greet you at the exit, and then escort you to the well-selected hotel in downtown Guilin.

Then, you will take the time to visit the stunning Elephant Trunk Hill, which is widely regarded as the symbol of Guilin. This natural wonder sits at the confluence of the Li River and Peach Blossom River, resembling a giant elephant drinking water from the river. The hill is made of water-soluble limestone rocks that have been gradually eroded by acidic rainwater over millions of years, creating a unique and breathtaking landscape. Its beauty is so awe-inspiring that it has contributed to the popular saying “桂林山水甲天下”, which means that Guilin's scenery is the best under heaven. Next, take a walk to Water-Moon Cave, a semicircular opening in the rock that represents the space between the elephant's trunk and legs. This cave stands 12 meters high and features several classical Song and Tang dynasty poems inscribed on its walls in Chinese characters.

Afterwards, you will pay a visit to the Reed Flute Cave, also known as the Palace of Nature's Art. Inside the cave, you'll find a stunning array of uniquely shaped and exquisitely transparent stalactites, stalagmites, columns, curtains, and flowers that are truly a sight to behold. These formations create a variety of stunning landscapes, including Lion Peak at Dawn, the Primitive Forest, the Pinnacle of Dragon and Elephant, and the Mountain of Fruits and Flowers, leaving visitors in awe. When illuminated with colorful neon lights, it feels like walking through a magical underground palace that will leave you spellbound. Don’t miss the Crystal Palace, where the water surface reflects off the rock walls, creating a dreamlike scene of dazzling display of light and color. Experience the Water Curtain Movie here, which allows you to observe geological changes such as the growth of stalactites and stalagmites, adding an extra layer of magic to this incredible natural wonder.

Day 7 Kunming Tour | Stone Forest, Yuantong Temple, Green Lake Park

On this day, your whole group will be transferred to the Stone Forest, a World Heritage Site in South China Karst, for an unforgettable Kunming excursion. Afterward, return to downtown Kunming for a classic city tour, including Yuantong Temple, Green Lake Park (Cuihu Park), and other sites based on your interests and available time.

Start your day with a visit to the Stone Forest (石林, 80km from Kunming, about 1.5 hours’ drive) - a must-see natural wonder that was once submerged under an ancient sea. Known as Shilin in Chinese, this national geological park showcases remarkable stone formations that evolved over 270 million years through marine sedimentation, crustal uplift, volcanic lava coverage, erosion, and leveling. Within the Stone Forest, explore the Big and Small Stone Forests by sightseeing bus, marveling at the unique karst formations and traces of geological history. The site also highlights the Yi ethnic culture, and you can immerse yourself in the legend of Ashima (阿诗玛) and explore filming locations for the 1986 TV series Journey to the West.

After that, return to Kunming for a visit to Yuantong Temple (圆通寺), a tranquil oasis in the city center with a unique water courtyard layout and over 1,200 years of history. Yuantong Temple is China’s oldest Guanyin Temple and features a rare “Downhill Temple” design, where visitors descend rather than ascend upon entering. This sacred site houses Buddhist traditions from the Han, Southern, and Tibetan regions and includes the Bronze Buddha Hall, a Southeast Asian-style building that holds a Buddha statue gifted by Thailand’s Buddhist Association.

Afterward, enjoy a scenic walk at Green Lake Park (翠湖公园), just 700 meters from Yuantong Temple. Once a marshy bay of Dianchi Lake, Cuihu Park became a city lake during the Ming Dynasty and is often called the “jade within the city.” Divided by embankments reminiscent of West Lake’s Su Causeway, the park has historical buildings, famous residences, and a sculpture honoring Nie Er, the composer of China’s national anthem. Cuihu is beloved by locals for strolling, feeding fish, watching the seasonal migration of Black-headed Gulls from Siberia, and enjoying lotus blooms, flower lanterns, and the vibrant atmosphere.

Day 8 Kunming to Dali by High Speed Train | Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, Erhai Lake, Free Time in Dali Ancient Town

In this morning, you will take the high speed train from Kunming to Dali. Upon arrival in Dali, pick you up at the train station. And our guide will take you and your group to visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, offering a deep dive into Dali's rich history and spiritual heritage.

The Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple (崇圣寺三塔景区), set against the stunning backdrop of the Cangshan Mountains and overlooking Erhai Lake, are an iconic symbol of Dali. These three pagodas consist of a central pagoda, Qianxun Pagoda, which stands at 69 meters, flanked by two smaller pagodas. According to local legend, the pagodas were constructed to deter dragons that once inhabited the swampy area of Dali. Take time to appreciate the intricate architectural details that have allowed these structures to withstand the centuries. Don’t miss the picturesque reflection pond in front of the pagodas, offering stunning mirror images perfect for photos.

Next, visit Chongsheng Temple (崇圣寺), located just behind the pagodas. Once the royal temple of the Dali Kingdom of Nanzhao and nicknamed “the Capital of Buddhism,” it is also known as Tianlong Temple from Jin Yong’s Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. As you tour the temple grounds, explore worship halls such as the Mahavira Hall and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. From higher points, you can take in sweeping panoramic views of the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake.

After that, take an electric cart along the ecological corridor of the west side of Erhai Lake (洱海). Named "Ear-shaped Sea" due to its unique form, Erhai is the second-largest highland lake in China and a central feature of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the expansive blue lake framed by the majestic Cangshan Mountains. And, you’ll pass through charming Bai villages, green fields, and vibrant flowers.

Day 9 Dali - Lijiang | Xizhou Local Market, Xizhou Ancient Town, Zhoucheng Tie-dye, Free Exploration in Lijiang Old Town & Black Dragon Pond Park

Start your delightful day by immersing yourself in the lively Xizhou Local Market  (喜洲市场)! There's no better way to get under the skin of a place than by exploring its local market, here you can witness firsthand the local customs and mouth-watering dietary habits. This market has been a gathering spot for over a century where locals trade a wide array of goods - from farm-fresh produce and unique handicrafts to tantalizing local snacks. Yunnan, fondly known as the "Kingdom of Flora and Fauna," is a place where flowers and insects find their way into the local cuisine! Don't be surprised if you come across unfamiliar vegetables, fruits, and wild mushrooms. While you're there, don't miss your chance to try local favorites like Xizhou baba (a tasty stuffed pancake, savory or sweet) and a cup of freshly brewed Yunnan coffee.

After exploring the market, take a walking tour of Xizhou Ancient Town (喜洲古镇), acclaimed as the "Premier Town of the Bai people" due to its exceptionally the largest and best-preserved cluster of Bai ethnic group's traditional dwellings.  Xizhou Village is ideal for those seeking a more authentic and tranquil cultural experience of Bai life and traditions. As you wander through the village, visit some of the old mansions and Bai residences like Yan Family Compound (严家大院), you'll notice the most distinctive features of Bai architecture known as "Three-Room and One-Screen Wall (三房一照壁)" and "Siheyuan/Courtyard (四合院)”. These homes are adorned with exquisite details such as flying eaves, ornately carved wooden doors and beautifully painted walls typical of Bai aesthetics. Don't miss the "Three Courses of Tea" ceremony (三道茶), a Bai cultural practice you must experience. This tea ceremony, which transitions from bitter to sweet to an aftertaste, encapsulates the philosophy of "embraces hardship, values the sweetness that follows struggles, and reflects on the profound aftertastes that life experiences leave behind". In addition, Xizhou is surrounded by vast wheat fields, creating a striking contrast against the grey-and-white tones of the Bai minority dwellings. This harmonious coexistence with nature provides a healing, wonderful feeling. The beautiful scenery, especially in spring and autumn, draws tourists to appreciate Xizhou's charms.

Next, make your way to Zhoucheng Village, which is just a short drive from Xizhou. Zhoucheng Village (周城), is often referred to as the “Hometown of Bai Embroidery ”. It is Bai people village, famous for its traditional tie-dye art (扎染), which has been preserved and passed down through generations. The Bai tie-dye technique has been listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Explore workshops within the village that showcase exquisite Bai embroidery. These pieces often depict traditional motifs such as lotus flowers, fish, and birds, which carry significant cultural symbolism. Engage with the local craftsmen and women, many of whom have inherited their skills from generations. If you're lucky, you may witness live demonstrations of Bai embroidery and tie-dye techniques. Optional Activity: If interested, participate in a hands-on workshop and craft your own tie-dye fabric under the guidance of expert artisans.

Later, continue driving to Lijiang (about 140 kilometers, around 2 hours). Lijiang (丽江), nestled under the breathtaking Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, forms a beautiful and peaceful link between Shangri-La to the north and Dali to the south. A UNESCO World Heritage site named "Old Town of Lijiang", it's not only a living ancient town complex, encompassing Dayan, Shuhe, and Baisha, but also the heartland of the Naxi ethnic group, with about 74% of the population being Naxi. A visit to Lijiang allows you to enjoy endless snow-capped mountain views, appreciate the charming old town, experience the rich Naxi culture, and unwind in its peaceful atmosphere.

Stay overnight in Lijiang.

Free Time Ideas at Black Dragon Pond Park:

On this day, you can explore on your own to Black Dragon Pond Park (黑龙潭公园), located at the northern edge of Lijiang Old Town. Day 10 Lijiang Tour | Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, Baisha Murals, Lijiang Old Town (Sifang Square)

This majestic mountain is famous for its towering peaks, stunning scenery, and abundant biodiversity. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003. The crown jewel of the region is the sight of 13 snow-capped peaks, with the highest peak named Shanzidou, reaching an impressive elevation of 5,596 meters (18,360 ft). You can capture many awesome photos here.

Discover the charming panda stars at this base, such as Hua Hua, the most adored and celebrated panda who has captured the hearts of the nation, and Zhi Ma, the real-life inspiration behind the panda mascot of the World University Games. Besides giant pandas, the cute red pandas (rarer than giant pandas) at the Red Panda Playgrounds are also the highlight of the Chengdu Panda Base. Nowadays, the panda base has also become an urban birding spot for local birders and kids to search for Red-billed Leiothrix, Black-throated Tit, Chinese Blackbird, Spotted Dove, White-browed Laughingthrush, and more. If you're interested, you can follow your guide to discover more about pandas' secrets through the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum, which is free to enter but requires advance reservation, and closed on Mondays.

Later, pay a visit to Wenshu Monastery, a 1400-year-old temple dedicated to honoring Manjushri Bodhisattva, the Symbol of Wisdom. It is one of the four great temples of the Chan (Zen) school of Buddhism in China. Before entering the temple, take a moment to capture the beauty of the Red Wall. Once inside, stroll leisurely through the temple's beautiful Qing Dynasty-style buildings and marvel at the Heavenly Kings Hall, Three Saints Hall, Grand Buddha Hall, Dharma Hall, and Scripture Library in that order. In this afternoon, it's time to take a leisurely stroll inside Chengdu Renmin Park (Chengdu People's Park) like a local and enjoy the city's slow lifestyle. You can watch locals square dancing, practicing Taiji, singing Chinese folk songs, playing traditional Chinese musical instruments, as well as playing Chinese chess and boating on the lake. Don’t miss the blind date corner (a marriage market) where parents of unmarried adults flock to the park to find a partner for their daughter or son. Then, order a cup of fragrant jasmine green tea (a favorite of Chengdu locals) while sitting in a time-honored tea house, such as Heming Tea House. Chat with your friends, try Chengdu Ear Cleaning by professional ear cleaner, and see locals having fun playing mahjong.

When the sun sets, the nightlife on Jinli Street becomes even more charming. Known as the "Chengdu Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival Scroll" and ranked at the top of the world's most beautiful streets by CNN Travel in 2021, Jinli Street was first built during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280) and was then known as "Shu Jinli". Day 14 Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by High Speed Train | Huanglong National Park

On this day, you will be escorted to Chengdu East Railway Station for a high-speed train to Huanglong Jiuzhai Station (about 1.5-2 hours). Upon arrival at Huanglong Jiuzhai Station, the local guide and driver will meet you there and escort you to Huanglong National Park, about 27 km away, with a 30-40 minutes' drive.

Huanglong National Park is a stunning valley with terraces of colored limestone ponds in blues, greens, oranges, yellows, and white. Huanglong, which means “Yellow Dragon”, got its name for its special geographical features. Seen from a distance, Huanglong's numerous travertine formations look like an enormous golden dragon arching across the valley, winding its way between the snowy mountain peaks. Huanglong Valley is also renowned for its superlative scenery of snow-topped mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, virgin forests, wild animals, etc. The area, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, has been called a "World Wonder" and "Fairy Land on Earth."

Instead of a 6-hour hike, you are suggested to take a quick cable car directly to the top and then walk down the valley to enjoy the scenery (usually 3 to 4 hours). Walking down the mountain, you can see the main sites of Honglong Monastery, Five-Colored Ponds, Mirror Ponds, Welcoming Guest Ponds, a waterfall, as well as some temples and caves.

At the top (3556 m) of the valley lies the best highlight - Five-Color Ponds, consisting of almost 700 ponds of different sizes, shapes, and colors. It is well arranged and noted for the most graceful, bright, and distinct colors. Cobbles on the bottom shape into prisms of clearly visible chromatism between the texture and water plants. Water in the pools overflows, which makes all the colorful pools look like pieces of azure green jade plates from a distance.

After sightseeing, you will leave the park and drive for about 2 hours (104km) to Jiuzhaigou to check in at your hotel.

Useful Tips for Visiting Huanglong National Park:

  1. The altitude of Huanglong is higher than that of Jiuzhaigou, ranging from 3,200 to 3,600 meters (10,500 to 11,800 feet), which may cause high altitude sickness for some travelers. You'd better avoid any strenuous exercises. It is recommended to prepare an oxygen bottle, or there are also many oxygen stations in the park.
  2. The Huanglong cable car is closed in winter.

Day 15 Jiuzhaigou Valley Full-Day Tour | Jiuzhaigou National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, set out for a full-day exploration of Jiuzhaigou National Park. Your guide will accompany you to hop on a sightseeing bus to enter the park and explore the fairyland landscape of Jiuzhaigou.

With some of the most beautiful and inspiring scenery on earth, Jiuzhaigou was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is even one of China's most enchanting attractions. Jiuzhaigou (literally "Nine Settlement Valley") takes its name from the nine Tibetan settlements along its length, which is most renowned for its bluer-than-blue lakes, rushing waterfalls, colorful forests, and deep woodlands backlit by snowy mountain ranges.

The park is a Y-shaped valley with three main sections: the Zechawa, Rize, and Shuzheng valleys. The relaxing and wise way to visit is to take advantage of the sightseeing bus. There are sightseeing buses running from the entrance to the three valleys. Travelers hop off the bus, walk along wooden plank roads to enjoy the sights, then hop on another bus to the next attractions. Our tour guide will design a smart route according to your time, energy, and crowd level, and accompany you to explore the essence of Jiuzhaigou at a comfortable pace.

The classic visiting route is to take a sightseeing bus to Nuorilang Waterfall. After that, take a bus to Zechawa Valley. From there, have a short hike to Five-Flower Lake and Pearl Beach. Then move to Rize Valley to visit Panda Lake, Five Flowers Lake, Pearl Shoal, Mirror Lake, etc. Lastly, return to Nuorilang. Rest at the joining point of the "Y" - Nuorilang Tourist Center. After a good rest, spend your time visiting Shuzheng Valley. Then descend along Shuzheng Valley to the park entrance and enjoy the great natural scenery interspersed with traditional Tibetan villages, etc., on the route.

Useful Tips for Visiting Jiuzhaigou Valley:

  1. Get to the park earlier to escape the crowds of tourist groups.
  2. Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking and trekking shoes.
  3. Dining options inside the park are limited and expensive. Buffet lunch is provided at Nuorilang Restaurant (the only restaurant in the valley). If you bring your own food, you can picnic far away from the masses and avoid spending too much time at the busiest points.

Immerse yourselves in the Exhibition Hall of Bronze and Ceramic to appreciate the elaborate bronzes and exquisite artifacts. You won’t miss the chance to enjoy the Top 10 treasures in the Shanghai Museum, such as such as the Dake Ding (大克鼎a bronze food vessel over 3,000 years old), the Chime Bells of Jinhousu (晋侯苏钟ancient musical instrument,1046 BC - 771 BC).

Next, move to Yu Garden, the most celebrated classical Chinese garden hidden in the bustling downtown area of Shanghai, where you can appreciate the beauty of a Jiangnan water town ! Yu Garden was a private garden of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) with a history of over 460 years, was built in 1559 by Pan Yunduan (潘允端) for his father to enjoy his retired life. You will see the winding paths and changing scenery, the plants and ponds, the brick carvings, stone carvings, clay sculptures, and wood carvings in the garden, all designed with great craftsmanship. On the way to Yu Garden, you will pass by the iconic Jiuqu Bridge (九曲桥Nine-Bend Bridge/Zigzag Causeway) and the Huxin Pavilion (湖心亭Mid-lake Pavilion, built in the Qing Dynasty, 1616-1912). According to Chinese Fengshui, the zigzag causeway is designed to thwart spirits, who can only journey in straight lines. As you enter Yu Garden, you can explore various beautifully crafted dragons hidden in the buildings, count them, and learn more about the Chinese dragon totem from your guide.

Later, explore Yuyuan Bazaar (Chenghuangmiao Market) outside Yu Garden which is a vibrant Shanghai Old Street where you can try Shanghai’s local snacks such as Xiaolongbao (Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant小笼包), Pan-Fried Pork Buns (Fried Dumplings生煎包), Soup Dumplings (灌汤包), and Won-ton Soup (上海馄饨). You can also buy some traditional Chinese handicrafts and artworks for souvenirs here.

After lunch, you can take a walk from Nanjing Road to the Bund, which is less than a 2 km walk. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is one of the iconic attractions of Shanghai, known as the "Number One Commercial Street in China". It serves as a window to Shanghai's openness to the world and a paradise for shoppers from both domestic and international locations. Nanjing Road is the perfect place to experience century-old Chinese time-honored shops. Walking from Nanjing Road East to the Bund, you will have the feeling of traveling back to the 1930s and 1940s. As the Top 1 Place to Visit on the Shanghai Bucket List, the Bund is the best spot to view the Oriental Pearl TV Tower (a symbol of Shanghai) and the three skyscrapers of Lujiazui. Located on the bank of the Huangpu River and renowned as “An Exhibition of International Buildings”, the Bund is a collection of 52 buildings representing various international architectural styles. Since 1844 (Qing Dynasty), foreign banks, trading companies, clubs, and newspapers have gathered here, showcasing the former glory of the "Wall Street of the Far East" (远东华尔街).

After the Bund tour, you will reach Jinling East Road to board a public ferry to cross the Huangpu River, transferring you from Old Shanghai Town to Lujiazui Financial District in Shanghai Pudong New Area. Then, you will take a walk to the highest building in Shanghai - the Shanghai Tower. It features a dramatic 120-degree twist from its base to its peak. Take the world's fastest lifts (traveling at 64km/h) to the "Top of Shanghai Observatory" located on the 118th floor, 546 meters above ground level. Here, you'll have the unparalleled opportunity to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of modern Shanghai and also look down upon the Oriental Pearl TV Tower (a cultural landmark of Shanghai), Jin Mao Tower (a traditional Chinese pagoda-like structure with a modern style) and the Shanghai World Financial Center (the third tallest building in China and the fifth tallest in the world). From Shanghai Tower, you can also get a bird's eye view of the Bund and the Nanjing Road you had just visited before from another side of the Huangpu River.

Day 29 Shanghai | Zhujiajiao Water Town

After breakfast, you will meet your guide in the hotel lobby and prepare to drive away from the bustling city of Shanghai to the peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town, located about 48 kilometers away.

Recognized as the most well-preserved ancient water town around Shanghai, Zhujiajiao presents the quintessential features of Jiangnan's water village - "ancient bridges, beautiful waterways, and traditional architecture" (小桥、流水、人家). It is often referred to as "Shanghai's Venice" and is listed as one of the 50 most worthwhile places in China for foreigners to visit. The tranquil and serene atmosphere of Zhujiajiao stands in vivid contrast to the hustle and bustle of Shanghai. Here, time seems to slow its hurried pace, and you'll feel as if you've stepped into an old-world China.

Zhujiajiao's historical roots stretch back over 1,700 years, and its intricate network of canals once served as the lifeblood of trade. Small boats and barges once ferried goods through these canals, connecting communities and sustaining livelihoods. Today, the town still preserves many ancient bridges, temples, traditional houses, and historical relics. It has also attracted many artists to settle here, opening small folk art galleries that line the cobblestone streets, such as the Shanghai Handicraft Exhibition Hall, Quanhua Watercolor Art Gallery, and Shanghai Helong Art Gallery.

Your guide will lead you down these winding lanes as you take in the well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty architectures, traditional residences, and local shops selling handicrafts and snacks. Among North Street is the best-preserved ancient street in this town.

The town is spread across a network of rivers and canals, with numerous bridges linking different sections. You'll cross some of the town's 36 stone bridges, each with its unique design and history. The most famous among them is the Fangsheng Bridge, which is the largest stone arch bridge in Shanghai, adorned with intricate carvings and ornamental designs.

You will also visit a few gardens, such as the Kezhi Garden and Hexin Garden, where you can admire the beauty of traditional Chinese landscapes. The Helong Art Museum is another highlight, renowned for its extensive collection of works by Shanghai-style (Haipai) masters.

Optional  Activity: A rowing boat ride along the canals is a must-do activity in Zhujiajiao. As you glide through the water, you'll pass under historic stone bridges and by charming traditional houses with white walls and black-tiled roofs. The boat rides offer an opportunity for some great photography and a chance to see the town from a unique perspective.

Don't forget to try some local food while you're here. Whether it's a steamed bun from a street vendor or a cup of traditional Chinese tea in a centuries-old teahouse, the flavors are sure to be as memorable as the scenery.

After the water town tour, your guide will accompany you back to Shanghai.
