Qingdao Location Map: Where is Qingdao China on the Map?
Where is Qingdao located in China? Look at our Qingdao Location Map, you'll find it tucked away in eastern China on the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula.
Sitting right at 36°04'N and 120°20'E, it looks directly out over the Yellow Sea (黄海).
It is located almost exactly halfway between Beijing and Shanghai. It's the ultimate seaside escape between China's two biggest hubs!
If you're coming from Beijing, it's a quick 3 to 5-hour zip on the bullet train. Coming up from Shanghai? You're looking at about 4.5 to 6.5 hours.

Qingdao City Map: Layout (Old Town vs New City), Airport & Railway Stations
Qingdao is a mix of history and high-rises. We usually split it into the "Old Town" (west) and the "New City" (east).
Take a look at this Qingdao City Map.
To the west, you have the nostalgic Old Town—red tiles, green trees, and hilly German-style streets. To the east, the New City takes over with glittering skyscrapers.
To make sense of the 10 main regions, here is how the city is roughly divided:
| Atmosphere | Regions (Districts) |
| The Historic & Modern Core | Shinan (市南), Shibei (市北), Licang (李沧) |
| Coastal & Nature Hubs | Laoshan (崂山), Huangdao (黄岛), Chengyang (城阳) |
| The Wider Reach | Jimo (即墨), Jiaozhou (胶州), Pingdu (平度), Laixi (莱西) |
When you're flying in, you'll land at Qingdao Jiaodong Airport (TAO: 青岛胶东国际机场). It's a bit of a trek from the center, so plan for about 1 hour's travel.
For trains, most of my travelers use Qingdao (青岛站) or Qingdao North Railway Station (青岛北站). If you can, aim for the main Qingdao Station—it's right by the sea in the Old Town!
Qingdao West Station (青岛西站) is more than 1 hour away from the city center by car. It's best to avoid this one unless you're staying deep in the Huangdao district.

The Old Town & Shibei: Where History Lives
Most of my travelers start at Zhanqiao Pier (栈桥), the true symbol of the city.
From there, you can wander into the Dabaodao Cultural Block (大鲍岛), also called Dabaodao Museum, to see traditional "Liyuan" courtyards. For the best views, head to Xiaoyushan Park (小鱼山) or the Museum of the Former German Governor's House (总督楼).
If you get hungry or thirsty, Taidong Pedestrian Street (台东步行街) and the Tsingtao Beer Museum (啤酒博物馆) are the local go-tos for street food and fresh brews.
The Coastline: Architecture & Beaches
As you move east along the shore, you'll hit the Badaguan Scenic Area (八大关). It's a leafy neighborhood filled with exotic European villas.
Right next door is the Qingdao Second Bathing Beach (第二海水浴场), a perfect spot to dip your toes in the water.
Keep going and you'll reach the glowing red "Wind of May" sculpture at May Fourth Square (五四广场).
The Outer Reach: Mountains & Movie Stars
If you have more time, head out to Mount Lao (崂山) in Laoshan to see Taoist temples hanging over the ocean.
For something different, check out the Oriental Movie Metropolis (东方影都) in Huangdao—it's like the Hollywood of China! Or visit hidden gems like Mount Daizhu (大珠山) and the ancient Langyatai (琅琊台).
If you're into history, Jimo Ancient City (即墨古城) and Xiongyasuo Ancient City (雄崖所故城) offers a look at Jimo's deep roots.
Further outward, you'll find gems like Chashan Scenic Area (茶山) in Pingdu, Jiaozhou City God Temple (城隍庙) in Jiaozhou.
Qingdao Port Map: Where to Go Sailing?
Qingdao isn't called the "Sailing City" for nothing! Grab our Qingdao Port Map to ditch the pavement for the waves.
To help you choose your departure point, here are the 4 tourist ports and what they offer:
| Port | Route | Time | Opening Hours |
| Zhanqiao Pier Port (青岛湾栈桥码头) | Old Town Classics: Qingdao Wan - Zhanqiao Pier - Sea Palace - Little Qingdao - Navy Museum - Qingdao Wan | 30 minutes | 9:30 – 18:30 |
| Bada Xia Port (飞洋游艇码头) | Hidden Gems: Badaxia Scenic Area - Sea Palace - Zhanqiao Pier - Little Qingdao - Navy Museum - Lu Xun Park - Badaxia Scenic Area | 30 minutes | 9:30 – 18:30 |
| Qingdao Ferry Terminal (青岛轮渡站) | History: Xiaogang Bay - Qingdao International Cruise Terminal - Jiaozhou Bay Bridge - Horseshoe Reef Lighthouse | 30-40 minutes | 9:30 – 18:30 |
| Olympic Sailing Center (奥帆中心) | Modern Skyline: May Fourth Square - Haitian Center - Signal Hill - Xiaoyushan - Navy Museum - Little Qingdao | 40 minutes | 8:30 – 18:30 |
The best sailing weather is May to October. For a "wow" moment, take the Fushan Bay (浮山湾) night route from the Olympic Sailing Center to see the skyscraper light show from the water!
If it's your first time, head to Zhanqiao Pier Port. It's a 30-minute "postcard tour" where you can snap the Navy Museum and Signal Hill all at once.
For a modern vibe, the Olympic Sailing Center is the place to be—especially at night for the neon skyline.
Want to skip the crowds? Try Bada Xia Port. It's a local favorite with cool "piano key" rocks and great photo ops.
If you're a history buff, the Qingdao Ferry Terminal near Sichuan Road (四川路) lets you feel the city's industrial soul (and see seagulls in winter!).

Qingdao Hotel Map: Where to Stay in Qingdao?
Since the Qingdao city is so spread out, my biggest tip is to stay within walking distance of a metro station to save yourself a lot of travel time.
Check out our Qingdao Hotel Map, and you'll see that the best places to stay usually cluster around the major metro lines.
Here is a quick breakdown of the 3 most popular neighborhoods for travelers:
☞ Near Qingdao Railway Station (Old Town): Perfect for history buffs and budget travelers! Stay here on Line 1 or 3 to walk to Zhanqiao Pier and the Catholic Cathedral.
☞ Near May Fourth Square (New City): This is the modern heart of the city on Lines 2 and 3. It's the best spot for families wanting luxury hotels, big malls like MixC, and those famous skyscraper light shows at the Olympic Sailing Center.
☞ Near Shilaoren Beach (Laoshan): If you just want to wake up to the sound of waves, head east on Line 2. This area is much quieter and packed with modern resorts—perfect for kids who want to play in the sand all day.
Go with the Old Town for character and better prices, or May Fourth Square if you want high-end convenience and shopping. If it's a family beach holiday, Shilaoren is your winner!
