Are You Seeking a Different Perspective to Explore Shanghai at Night?

As the sun dips below the horizon and the city lights start to glimmer, Shanghai unveils a new face - one that dazzles in the night. If you've wondered what this multifaceted city looks like after dark, then our 3-Hour Shanghai Night Tour Along the Huangpu River is perfect for you. Whether you're a fan of the city's historical allure or its modern dynamism, this night tour offers two unique perspectives: Puxi’s Historical Elegance or Pudong’s Modern Marvels.

There's no debate that there's no better way to experience it than at night along the Huangpu River. This majestic river is the lifeline of the city, dividing it into two contrasting worlds: the historically rich Puxi (West Bank) and the futuristic Pudong (East Bank).

Puxi’s Historical Elegance: Imagine a tapestry of historic buildings, each a relic of colonial influence, lit under the glow of warm, golden lights. The Bund on the Puxi side is like a visual museum, displaying the grandeur of a bygone era. Each building here tells a story, and the warm lighting makes it all seem like a page from a history book, beautifully coming to life.

Pudong’s Modern and Dazzling: Turn your eyes to the other side of the river, and you’ll feel as if you’ve been teleported into the future. Towering skyscrapers reach ambitiously into the night sky, glowing in a myriad of colors from their LED costumes. Buildings like the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center serve as modern lighthouses, guiding the city into a new age.

Don't miss out on the chance to see Shanghai from a whole new perspective. Book your spot on our 3-Hour Shanghai Night Tour Along the Huangpu River and choose the face of Shanghai you wish to discover!

Day 1 Shanghai Huangpu River Night Tour | Puxi with Classic Lights or Pudong with Dazzling Lights

The Huangpu River is a major river that flows through the city of Shanghai, eventually emptying into the Yangtze River. The river effectively divides the city into two distinct regions: Puxi to the west and Pudong to the east. After dark, both sides of the Huangpu River offer contrasting views of the two shores.

Our Shanghai Huangpu River Night Tour lasts about 3-4 hours, and you have a choice between two routes. (1) Route Puxi (West Bank): This route focuses on the city's historical districts, including The Bund. The colonial-era architecture of The Bund bathed in the warm glow of classical lighting, offers a sense of time-travel back to the early 20th century. (2) Route Pudong (East Bank): This route focuses on the skylines in Lujiazui. Witness the towering skyscrapers basked in the neon glows, offering a sense of modernity and futurism.

Optional Puxi (West Bank) Night Tour (3-4 hours)

Welcome briefing by your experienced guide, providing an overview of the night's itinerary and what to expect. Your first stop is the Bund (Waitan). Located on the bank of the Huangpu River and renowned as “An Exhibition of International Buildings”, the Bund is a collection of 52 buildings representing various international architectural styles. Since 1844 (Qing Dynasty), foreign banks, trading companies, clubs, and newspapers have gathered here, showcasing the former glory of the "Wall Street of the Far East" (远东华尔街). As night falls, The Bund takes on an ethereal glow, with buildings beautifully lit in a manner that accentuates their historic façades, offering offers a sense of time-travel back to the early 20th century.

After your walk, step onto the evening cruise along the Huangpu River for a visual feast that shows off both sides of Shanghai. On the Puxi side, you'll see The Bund, where beautiful, old buildings glow warmly under classic lighting. These historic structures tell the story of Shanghai's rich past. On the other side of the river is Pudong, where you'll find an entirely different scene. Here, modern skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center light up the night. They're covered in bright, colorful lights, showcasing the city's futuristic vibe.

Next, enjoy a walk from the Bund to Nanjing Road, one of the iconic attractions of Shanghai, known as the "Number One Commercial Street in China". It serves as a window to Shanghai's openness to the world and a paradise for shoppers from both domestic and international locations. Nanjing Road is the perfect place to experience century-old Chinese time-honored shops. As the evening unfolds, the street comes alive in a carnival of lights. Neon signs and giant LED screens flash with the glamour of luxury brands, and twinkling fairy lights adorn the trees, casting a soft glow on the facades of historical buildings.

Your last stop in Xintiandi. Xintiandi (新天地)is a bustling place that seamlessly blends Shikumen architecture (石库门) with modern urban fashion style. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the local Shikumen (stone-gate house) architecture, along with enticing dining and shopping options. This upscale entertainment and shopping complex is modeled on traditional “Nong Tang” (弄堂alleyway) homes and stands as the pioneering development in the city, demonstrating the commercial viability of preserving historical architecture. Enjoy a visit to the Shikumen Open House Museum (石库门屋里厢博物馆), which showcases the Shikumen lifestyle of middle-class families in Shanghai (上海小资) during the 1920s and 1930s. The house consists of front and back sections, with two floors and a total of eight rooms, including a "courtyard", "pavilion room”, "kitchen" and more. Rather than calling it a museum, it feels more like a cozy home of old Shanghai.

Optional Pudong (East Bank) Night Tour (3-4 hours)
Futuristic Fantasy: Lujiazui's Skyline After Dark

Meeting Time: 7:00 PM
Location: [Specific location to be confirmed]
Note: Your guide will meet you at the assembly point
Scenic Spots You will Pass:

Assembly Point→ Pudong New Area → Shanghai Tower → Riverside Promenade (Bingjiang Da Dao) → Short Ferry Ride to the Bund → Get back to your Hotel

Your evening of exploring the futuristic heart of Shanghai kicks off with a briefing from your experienced guide, laying out the night's itinerary and what you can expect to see and do.

Your first destination is the Pudong New Area, a symbol of China's rapid modernization. This area is home to some of Shanghai's most iconic skyscrapers, including Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower. The Pudong skyline is a spectacle of neon lights, laser shows, and towering skyscrapers. The buildings are often illuminated in vivid colors, and sometimes, coordinated light shows set to music are displayed.

Next, it's time to get up close and personal with these architectural marvels. Take the world's fastest lifts (traveling at 64km/h) ride up the Shanghai Tower, the second tallest building in the world - 632 meters (2,073 feet). From the observation deck, you'll have a panoramic view of Shanghai, twinkling in the evening light—a view that's hard to beat.

Following this sky-high experience, stroll down to the Riverside Promenade, also known as Bingjiang Da Dao. This scenic area offers another vantage point to admire the skyline of both Pudong and Puxi. Here, you'll see locals and tourists alike soaking up the views, taking photographs, or simply enjoying a peaceful evening walk.

Your evening concludes with a short local ferry ride back to the Bund. As you float on the Huangpu River, you'll have one more chance to marvel at the striking contrast between the two sides of the river. On the other side of the river is Puxi, you'll see The Bund, where beautiful, old buildings glow warmly under classic lighting. These historic structures tell the story of Shanghai's rich past.

I Left My Heart In Zhangjiajie

I'm a Singaporean traveller who booked a private solo tour. I chanced upon AOT after I googled and decided to travel last min. My planner from AOT named Rita was very patient towards all my request and changes, she is knowledgeable and provided excellent advice for my 8 days trip arrangement from Shanghai, Zhangjiajie N Chongqing. Although there were very minor hiccups just like any overseas holiday, it was still a well planned trip.

I would like thank all my tour guides and drivers (师父) for looking after me so well. Special mention to Zhangjiajie Tour Guide named Ms Rita Wang, she looks after her client with her sincerest heart into the smallest details such as eating habits and my lifestyle. (Example: Turning A/C on knowing we Singaporeans can't live without A/C in car & also I don't even have to look at menu to order food becos she knows what I want to eat) Also thank you 杨师父 who tagged team with Rita, he is a very good skilled safe driver and knows how look after me during long haul journey drive inter cities.

I would strongly reccomended anyone who wants to travel to look for Rita or her colleagues from Asia Odyssey Travel.

Lastly, thank you to all whom I've crossed path during my trip. I'm grateful to all people in China for the warm hospitality. 感恩大家的招待和爱。

Well organised bespoke China tour

Our bespoke East to West China tour starting In Shanghai and ending in Shangri-La was well organised by Mr Leo Li.

Everything went smoothly for our 20 day tour the guides and drivers where knowledgeable and looked after us well, particularly Sarah in Kunming.

We saw some beautiful parts of China and our hotels were good plus traveling 1st class on the bullets trains was well worth the extra cost.

We would recommend the Asia Odessey travel company and will definitely use them again for a future China tour.
