Are You Seeking a Different Perspective to Explore Shanghai at Night?
As the sun dips below the horizon and the city lights start to glimmer, Shanghai unveils a new face - one that dazzles in the night. If you've wondered what this multifaceted city looks like after dark, then our 3-Hour Shanghai Night Tour Along the Huangpu River is perfect for you. Whether you're a fan of the city's historical allure or its modern dynamism, this night tour offers two unique perspectives: Puxi’s Historical Elegance or Pudong’s Modern Marvels.
There's no debate that there's no better way to experience it than at night along the Huangpu River. This majestic river is the lifeline of the city, dividing it into two contrasting worlds: the historically rich Puxi (West Bank) and the futuristic Pudong (East Bank).
Puxi’s Historical Elegance: Imagine a tapestry of historic buildings, each a relic of colonial influence, lit under the glow of warm, golden lights. The Bund on the Puxi side is like a visual museum, displaying the grandeur of a bygone era. Each building here tells a story, and the warm lighting makes it all seem like a page from a history book, beautifully coming to life.
Pudong’s Modern and Dazzling: Turn your eyes to the other side of the river, and you’ll feel as if you’ve been teleported into the future. Towering skyscrapers reach ambitiously into the night sky, glowing in a myriad of colors from their LED costumes. Buildings like the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center serve as modern lighthouses, guiding the city into a new age.
Don't miss out on the chance to see Shanghai from a whole new perspective. Book your spot on our 3-Hour Shanghai Night Tour Along the Huangpu River and choose the face of Shanghai you wish to discover!
Shanghai (3-4 hours))
West Bank Route: Bund, Huangpu River Cruise, Nanjing Road, Xintiandi
East Bank Route: Pudong New Area, Shanghai Tower, Riverside Promenade, Local Ferry Ride to the Bund
The Huangpu River is a major river that flows through the city of Shanghai, eventually emptying into the Yangtze River. The river effectively divides the city into two distinct regions: Puxi to the west and Pudong to the east. After dark, both sides of the Huangpu River offer contrasting views of the two shores.
Our Shanghai Huangpu River Night Tour lasts about 3-4 hours, and you have a choice between two routes. (1) Route Puxi (West Bank): This route focuses on the city's historical districts, including The Bund. The colonial-era architecture of The Bund bathed in the warm glow of classical lighting, offers a sense of time-travel back to the early 20th century. (2) Route Pudong (East Bank): This route focuses on the skylines in Lujiazui. Witness the towering skyscrapers basked in the neon glows, offering a sense of modernity and futurism.

Welcome briefing by your experienced guide, providing an overview of the night's itinerary and what to expect. Your first stop is the Bund (Waitan). Located on the bank of the Huangpu River and renowned as “An Exhibition of International Buildings”, the Bund is a collection of 52 buildings representing various international architectural styles. Since 1844 (Qing Dynasty), foreign banks, trading companies, clubs, and newspapers have gathered here, showcasing the former glory of the "Wall Street of the Far East" (远东华尔街). As night falls, The Bund takes on an ethereal glow, with buildings beautifully lit in a manner that accentuates their historic façades, offering offers a sense of time-travel back to the early 20th century.
After your walk, step onto the evening cruise along the Huangpu River for a visual feast that shows off both sides of Shanghai. On the Puxi side, you'll see The Bund, where beautiful, old buildings glow warmly under classic lighting. These historic structures tell the story of Shanghai's rich past. On the other side of the river is Pudong, where you'll find an entirely different scene. Here, modern skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center light up the night. They're covered in bright, colorful lights, showcasing the city's futuristic vibe.
Next, enjoy a walk from the Bund to Nanjing Road, one of the iconic attractions of Shanghai, known as the "Number One Commercial Street in China". It serves as a window to Shanghai's openness to the world and a paradise for shoppers from both domestic and international locations. Nanjing Road is the perfect place to experience century-old Chinese time-honored shops. As the evening unfolds, the street comes alive in a carnival of lights. Neon signs and giant LED screens flash with the glamour of luxury brands, and twinkling fairy lights adorn the trees, casting a soft glow on the facades of historical buildings.
Your last stop in Xintiandi. Xintiandi (新天地)is a bustling place that seamlessly blends Shikumen architecture (石库门) with modern urban fashion style. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the local Shikumen (stone-gate house) architecture, along with enticing dining and shopping options. This upscale entertainment and shopping complex is modeled on traditional “Nong Tang” (弄堂alleyway) homes and stands as the pioneering development in the city, demonstrating the commercial viability of preserving historical architecture. Enjoy a visit to the Shikumen Open House Museum (石库门屋里厢博物馆), which showcases the Shikumen lifestyle of middle-class families in Shanghai (上海小资) during the 1920s and 1930s. The house consists of front and back sections, with two floors and a total of eight rooms, including a "courtyard", "pavilion room”, "kitchen" and more. Rather than calling it a museum, it feels more like a cozy home of old Shanghai.
