Sun Moon Lake Map: Find Sun Moon Lake Things to Do on Map
This Taiwan Sun Moon Lake map showcases attractions and things to do at Sun Moon Lake.

1. Kickstart Your Sun Moon Lake Day: Lakeside Breakfast at Shuishe Pier
My personal rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Let's kick off the day at Shuishe Pier, the bustling heart of Sun Moon Lake.
This area is packed with lovely lakeside cafes and local snack stalls. Grab a delicious breakfast here, soak in the tranquil morning views, and fuel up for a day packed with things to do at Sun Moon Lake!
Once you're ready, this is also where we'll hop on our Sun Moon Lake boat.
2. Take a Sun Moon Lake Cruise

My score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Cruising Route: Shuishe Pier - Lalu Island - Xuanguang Pier
No visit to Sun Moon Lake is complete without a relaxing boat tour!
From Shuishe Pier, we'll cruise across the shimmering waters to Xuanguang Pier. Keep an eye out for Lalu Island along the way – it's a sacred ancestral land for the Thao indigenous people and naturally divides the "Sun" and "Moon" sections of the lake.
It's a vest way to take in the vastness and beauty of this Sun Moon Lake activity!
3. Sun Moon Lake Temple Pilgrimage: Xuanguang, Xuanzang

My take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Once we disembark at Xuanguang Pier, our spiritual journey begins!
First, you must try the famous Grandma's Mushroom Tea Eggs (阿嬷茶叶蛋) – they're incredibly flavorful and a local legend.
Xuanguang Temple: This beautiful Tang-style temple sits right by the lake, making it a convenient first stop for many visitors. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Xuanzang Temple: Higher up the hill, this temple houses the relics of the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang. You'll even see a plaque inscribed by Chiang Kai-shek calling it a "National Treasure."
These templesare essential things to do in Sun Moon Lake for cultural immersion. This way, your Sun Moon Lake journey becomes a deeper, more meaningful experience than simple sightseeing!
4. Climb Ci'en Pagoda for Panoramic Views of Sun Moon Lake

My opinion: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
For truly breathtaking vistas, I highly recommend climbing Ci'en Pagoda after visiting the temples!
Located on top of Qinglong Mountain (at 1,000 meters elevation), this 45-meter-tall pagoda offers an incredible 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Sun Moon Lake.
From the top, you can clearly see Lalu Island and Xuanzang Temple perfectly aligned with the pagoda, forming a "Happiness Axis" across the lake, which stretches out like a beautiful two-toned ribbon.
It's truly one of the most rewarding Sun Moon Lake things to do for photographers!
5. Sun Moon Lake Night Market Explore at Ita Thao Old Street

How I'd rate it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
After exploring the temples, we'll return to the Xuanguang Pier and take another boat ride to Ita Thao Pier. By the way, "Ita Thao" in the Thao language means "We are human" or "I am human".
This is where the vibrant Ita Thao Old Street (around Yiyong Street and Wenhua Street) comes alive! It's the most recommended Sun Moon Lake night market for good reason.
You'll find fantastic Thao indigenous flavors like "rice-stuffed chicken wings," "President fish soup," and delicious "millet mochi." For drinks, don't miss Sun Moon Lake Ruby Black Tea or "Fan Cha" bubble tea, especially when paired with Ruby black tea ice cream!
It's a lively spot, with most food stalls open until 7 PM on weekdays (later on weekends), and all stalls open on bustling weekends.

6. Scenic Lakeside Stroll Along Ita Thao Trail

My opinion: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hiking Route: Ita Thao Pier - Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Station
From Ita Thao, let's take a leisurely walk along the Ita Thao Lakeside Trail. This beautiful path leads directly to the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Station, offering serene lake views along the way. It's a perfect way to digest those delicious snacks, lol!
If you're keen to explore more, Sun Moon Lake boasts other stunning trails.
The Hanbi Trail, starting from Meihe Park, offers birdwatching and glimpses of where Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling often walked. At its end, the Yu Le Pavilion offers views of the "Green Dragon Stealing the Pearl" formation.
The Ci'en Pagoda Trail (that's exactly our earlier climb) itself is famous for its spiraling staircase inside the pagoda – an Instagram hotspot!
These scenic walks are wonderful Sun Moon Lake activities that connect you with nature. Contact us at Asia Odyssey Travel to make it happen >>
7. Sun Moon Lake Ropeway: Soar in a Cable Car

What I think: ⭐⭐
Cable Car Route: Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Station - Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village
Time for a bird's-eye view! From the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Station, we'll hop on a cable car for a spectacular 7-minute ride.
Look out for the "crystal cabins" with transparent floors if you dare! While they offer an amazing four-quarter panoramic view of the Sun Moon Lake, the regular cabins often move a bit faster, giving you more time up top.
This cable car journey offers stunning aerial perspectives of the lake and mountains and directly connects to the next exciting destination - Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. It's a thrilling Sun Moon Lake thing to do!
8. Beyond the Lake: Cultural Fun at Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village

I'd give it: ⭐⭐
If time permits and you're traveling with kids (or just a big kid yourself!), let's head into the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.
This theme park is dedicated to Taiwan's 9 major indigenous cultures, offering a deeper understanding of their traditions, art, and history through performances and exhibits.
It's especially charming during cherry blossom season (February to March) when the park turns pink. This provides a fantastic cultural experience and another excellent Sun Moon Lake activity option!
9. Cycle the "Water Bicycle Path", One of the World's Most Beautiful Bike Path

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Cycling Route: Shuishe Pier - Xiangshan Visitor Center
After returning to Shuishe Pier by boat from Ita Thao, it's time to rent a bike for what CNN has called the "World's Most Beautiful Cycling Path!"
We'll tackle the scenic Shuishe to Xiangshan section (about 1 hour). You can rent various bikes at Shuishe Pier, including electric-assisted ones if you want to take it easy.
The highlight is the Moon Lake section (about 3.4 km), which is closed to motor vehicles, making it incredibly peaceful. You'll pass over charming spots like Tongxin Bridge and the water-level path at Shuishe Dam, enjoying wide-open lake views.
Cycling is another rewarding thing to do at Sun Moon Lake to truly soak in its beauty.
10. Architectural Beauty & Farewell Views: Xiangshan Visitor Center

My viewpoint: ⭐⭐
Our final stop for the day will be the Xiangshan Visitor Center.
This architectural marvel, designed by a Japanese team using a minimalist concrete (Shimizu-moku) style, offers a unique and beautiful perspective of Sun Moon Lake!
It's a wonderful place to relax, admire the design, and reflect on a day full of incredible sights and activities around Sun Moon Lake. It's a perfect spot to end your day and enjoy one last scenic view before heading back!
