Featured Experience: Erlang Mountain Tunnel, Mugecuo Scenic Area

After breakfast, we head out via the Chengya Expressway (G5), passing through Yaan, the "City of Rain." As we traverse the Erliang Mountain Tunnel, watch the misty Sichuan Basin transform instantly into the breathtaking landscapes of the Kham Plateau.

Important Travel Tips (Health & Comfort)

  • Pace Yourself: Today’s itinerary is designed with a relaxed pace to help your body gradually adjust to the increasing altitude.
  • Hygiene & Altitude Safety: We strongly recommend avoiding showers for the first 3 days on the plateau. Catching a cold can significantly increase the risk of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) and impact your entire journey. If possible, wait until you feel fully acclimated before bathing.
  • Infrastructure & Preparation: Please be aware that resource supply in Tibetan regions can be unstable. Occasional water or power outages may occur.

Altitude: 2,560m-4,298m-2,600m | Distance: 400km, about 7 hours’ drive

Featured Experience: Zheduo Mountain Observation Deck, Pastoral scenery of Xinduqiao

After breakfast, let’s say goodbye to Kangding and head toward G318 route. And, you will pass through Zheduo Mountain Pass, which sits at an altitude of 4,298 meters. The name Zheduo Mountain derives from its steep terrain and the unique winding road that features "nine bends and eighteen turns." Known as the "first pass of Kham", crossing Zheduo Mountain marks the official entry into the Kham Tibetan region. Furthermore, the Zheduo Mountain Pass serves as the initial pass on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway to reach an altitude exceeding 4,000 meters, signifying the transition from the Sichuan Basin and the Dadu River Valley to the western plateau of Sichuan.

On clear days, you can catch a glimpse of the magnificent Gongga Mountain, also referred to as the "King of Shu Mountains", towering at an elevation of 7,508 meters, from this vantage point.

Continuing your journey, you will drive to Xinduqiao, situated in the western part of Kangding City, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 3,460 meters. Although not officially designated as a scenic area, Xinduqiao is often called the "Photographer's Corridor". It is renowned for its enchanting lighting, vast grasslands, numerous streams, undulating mountain ranges, scattered Tibetan villages, and tranquil scenes of grazing cattle and sheep.

After enjoying the captivating views in Xinduqiao, you will proceed to Yajiang County for your accommodation.

Important Notes:

If the G318 via Zheduo Mountain is inaccessible due to traffic or weather, our route will be adjusted to the S434 Airport Road via Honghaizi.

After breakfast, we depart Bomi, traveling through landscapes that resemble traditional Chinese ink paintings. Our first stop is the azure Guxiang Lake, where tranquil waters flow against a backdrop of snow peaks and soft sandy shores. We invite you to take a gentle lakeside hike—measuring the beauty of this plateau with your footsteps while immersing yourself in the breeze and birdsong.

Continuing our journey, we cross the Tongmai Bridge. Once known as the most dangerous "natural barrier" on the G318, it has now been transformed into a safe, modern passage. We then arrive at Lulang, a fairytale town built along the water. With its alpine meadows, dense forests, grazing cattle, and white pagodas, it perfectly earns its reputation as "The Little Switzerland of Tibet." Here, the rising chimney smoke from Tibetan houses adds a touch of warmth to the ethereal scenery. Don’t miss the chance to try the famous local delicacy: Lulang Stone Pot Chicken.

Later, we ascend the mist-shrouded Mt. Segrila (Pass Altitude: 4,702m). This is one of the premier viewpoints for Mt. Namcha Barwa, often voted the most beautiful peak in China. Standing here, gazing at the majestic summit above the clouds, is a truly soul-stirring experience.

Day 12 Lhasa Tour | Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street
Altitude: 3,650m | Distance: 20 KM (Approx. 0.5 hours)

Featured Experience: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street

Today is dedicated to exploring the spiritual and historical wonders of Lhasa. We begin at the magnificent Potala Palace, perched atop Marpo Ri (Red Hill). As the world's highest ancient palace complex, it seamlessly integrates a fortress, palace, and monastery. This 13-story architectural marvel stretches over 400 meters and is divided into the White Palace (secular use) and the Red Palace (religious study and golden stupas). The tour takes approximately 2 hours.

Afterward, we stroll along Yutuo Road to soak in the local street life as we head toward the Jokhang Temple. Located in the heart of the old city and built in 647 AD, it is the most brilliant surviving structure from the Tubo Period. With its 5 golden roofs and 108 chapels, it holds the supreme spiritual status in Tibet—as the local saying goes, "The Jokhang Temple came first, then the city of Lhasa."

We will also explore the famous Barkhor Street, the vibrant pilgrimage circuit surrounding the Jokhang. Here, you can witness the three sacred "Kora" (pilgrimage) routes:

  • Nangkhor: The innermost circuit within the temple.
  • Barkhor: The middle circuit around the temple walls.
  • Lingkhor: The outer circuit encompassing the Potala Palace and old city.

In the evening, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Barkhor Street. Don't miss the local flavors at iconic spots like Makye Ame, A-Diao Yogurt, or the traditional Tsangkhung Nunnery Tea House.

Altitude: 3,650m – 4,441m – 3,800m | Distance: 350 KM (Approx. 7.5 hours)

Featured Experience: Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Pelkor Chode Monastery

Departing Lhasa, we drive along the Lhasa-Shigatse Expressway before joining the scenic S307 Provincial Road, widely known as the "Sightseeing Highway." We will ascend the Gampala Pass (4,990m) to reach Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet's three great sacred lakes. Its waters are so pure and turquoise they are often compared to smooth mutton-fat jade. From the summit, you’ll enjoy the best panoramic view, where the deep blue lake meets distant snow peaks and traditional Tibetan hamlets.

Descending to the lakeshore, we get a closer look at the crystal waters. On clear days, the majestic Mt. Noijin Kangsang—a favorite training ground for mountaineers—is visible on the horizon. Next, we pass the Karola Glacier, famous as a filming location for the movie Red River Valley. This massive glacier sits remarkably close to the highway, offering a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Continuing to the "Heroic Town" of Gyantse, a historic gateway with over 600 years of heritage, we will view the Zongshan Anti-British Fort from afar. We then visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery, unique for housing three different sects of Tibetan Buddhism under one roof and famed for its "Ten-Thousand-Buddha Pagoda" (Kumbum), home to exquisite murals and sculptures. Finally, we drive to Tibet's second-largest city, Shigatse, for our overnight stay.

Special Note:

Hotel Selections for Tibet Group Tour

Lhasa Recommended 3 Star Hotel

EBC Accommodation

In a Tibet group tour, there are two main types of accommodation choices on a Tibet group tour: basic standard and comfortable. In major cities like Lhasa, there are a variety of accommodation options available, ranging from 3 star to 4 star hotels. In more remote areas, such as near Mount Everest or Mount Kailash, the accommodations may be more basic, with simple guesthouses or tented camps. We will email you the detailed hotel arrangement after your booking.

If there is a single room due to gender reasons, we will arrange a triple room (or double standard room with and extra bed) or pay the single room supplement by the yourself.

Important Trip Notes for Booking a Tibet Group Tour

Do I need to get a Tibet permit to visit Tibet? How long does it take to obtain?
All foreign travelers are required to obtain a Tibet Travel Permit to visit Tibet. The permit can only be applied for through a registered travel agency in Tibet (we are local based Tibet travel agency with office setting in Lhasa) and is required to purchase flight or train tickets to Tibet. The permit is necessary to enter Tibet and visit certain areas within the region, including Lhasa and Mount Everest Base Camp. Travelers should plan ahead and allow sufficient time for the permit application process, as it can take one to two weeks to obtain the necessary permits.
All foreign travelers are advised to make their bookings at least one week in advance and send the necessary documents to us for obtaining the permits. However, if you plan to visit Mount Kailash, it is recommended to book at least two weeks in advance, as it may take longer to obtain the necessary permits.
How Many Tourists Travel in a Small Group Tour? Where Are They From?
Typically, small group tours in Tibet will have 2-15 travelers, and you will have the opportunity to meet and travel with tourists from different parts of the world. This can be a great chance to make new friends and connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Can I have my own group tour?
Yes, if you are traveling with a group of friends or with your family, you can customize your own group tour. Please contact your professional travel consultant to discuss and arrange a customized group tour that meets your needs and preferences.
Meals
“B” stands for breakfast. You will have it at your hotel in the morning.

“D” means dinner. All dinners are excluded in the itinerary. You have the chance to taste some authentic Chinese food and local snacks.
If you have special dietary requirements (vegetarian, halal, kosher, Indian, or gluten-free), please let us know before your booking. We will try our best to take care of you.

A Journey That Changed the Way I See the World

This 10 Days Chengdu & Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Tour via Qinghai-Tibet Railway was one of the most meaningful trips of my life. Traveling across such vast landscapes—from the green valleys of Sichuan to the high plateau of Tibet and finally into the Himalayas—felt like crossing into another world. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway itself was an unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking views and a smooth, comfortable ride into Lhasa.

Every detail of the journey was thoughtfully arranged, from permits to border crossings, which could have been very complicated without a professional team. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, especially in helping us adjust to the altitude. Standing in front of the Potala Palace, visiting ancient monasteries, and finally reaching Kathmandu felt like completing a once-in-a-lifetime journey. I am deeply grateful for the care and professionalism of the team. This tour is truly for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and a deeper connection to the world.

Private tour to Kailash Mansarovar
We were on private trip to kailash- Mansarovar through Lhasa with Asia Odyssey travel.
It was a great experience booking with Asia Odyssey travel. Asia Odyssey provided agent Rex to work with us. Rex is amazing individual who helped us through out our journey like carving itenary the way we wanted, provided good comfortable vehicle with very good driver and a very
friendly and caring tour guide. We are also satisfied with hotel stay in each city. All stays were upto the standard as he promised they would be. Thank you Rex.we are happy with the deal we got. Rex was in constant touch with us before, during and ending our journey. We requested many changes during our journey due to changed interest and flight schedule . He was there to help us every time.
I would highly recommend to travel with Asia Odyssey specially having Rex by your side.
Just one thing I would like to mentions is that the meal plans. I would suggest that if all three meals included in itenary would be great help for vegetarian travellers like us. So we didn't have to worry about food.
Overall it was a very good experience with Asia Odyssey and travel and Agent Rex. Much appreciated

Our agent Chia is simply the best
Our agent Chia is simply the best! She was in contact with us every step of the way from the time we committed to the Beijing - Xian - Chengdu - Lhasa - Shanghai tour. There was absolutely no stress with the entire tour ie. Pick ups, train/ plane tickets, payments. Each time Chia was able to answer any questions that we had almost immediately. The tour itself was great, met some really nice people from different parts of the world. Groups were a maximum of 12 so the guides were always very attentive - in Tibet, we only had 3 left in the group. We have travelled quite extensively but this is the first time we have engaged in a tour and it certainly did not disappoint. Highly recommended!
