The G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway, China's most breathtaking ribbon of asphalt, is an epic journey leading you from Chengdu to Lhasa. This incredible journey will leave you speechless.

Start from the Hometown of Giant Pandas - Chengdu, and then as you traverse the G318, feel the crisp mountain air brush your face. Vibrant prayer flags flutter in the breeze, their colors echoing the chants that may reach your ears. Here, you'll understand why some call this route a "paradise" or a "pure land". Everywhere you gaze, a masterpiece unfolds: endless grasslands stretching towards the horizon, snow-capped peaks reaching for the heavens, a road seemingly carved for celestial travel, and crystal-clear lakes dotting the landscape. In Tibet, you will have a delightful trip in Nyingchi and Lhasa.

Shift your focus, and witness Tibetan sisters tending barley fields, their voices raised in joyful song. Pilgrims make their pilgrimage, taking three steps and a kowtow with each stride, inching closer to their spiritual haven - Lhasa. The G318 is more than a highway; it's a journey that stirs the soul.

Day 2 Chengdu - Kangding - Zheduo Mountain Pass - Xinduqiao - Yajiang
Altitude: 500m-4298m-2600m | Distance: 400km, about 7 hours’ drive

After breakfast, drive west from Chengdu towards Western Sichuan, passing through the world-famous "Rainy City," Ya'an. Take the Yakang Expressway, cross the Erlang Mountain Tunnel, and arrive in Kangding, the capital of the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which is famously mentioned in the "Kangding Love Song".

After that, you will pass through Zheduo Mountain Pass, which sits at an altitude of 4,298 meters. The name Zheduo Mountain derives from its steep terrain and the unique winding road that features "nine bends and eighteen turns." Known as the "first pass of Kham," crossing Zheduo Mountain marks the official entry into the Kham Tibetan region. Furthermore, the Zheduo Mountain Pass serves as the initial pass on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway to reach an altitude exceeding 4,000 meters, signifying the transition from the Sichuan Basin and the Dadu River Valley to the western plateau of Sichuan. On clear days, you can catch a glimpse of the magnificent Gongga Mountain, also referred to as the "King of Shu Mountains", towering at an elevation of 7,508 meters, from this vantage point.

Continuing your journey, you will drive to Xinduqiao, situated in the western part of Kangding City, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 3,460 meters. Although not officially designated as a scenic area, Xinduqiao is often called the "Photographer's Corridor." It is renowned for its enchanting lighting, vast grasslands, numerous streams, undulating mountain ranges, scattered Tibetan villages, and tranquil scenes of grazing cattle and sheep.

After enjoying the captivating views in Xinduqiao, you will proceed to Yajiang County for your accommodation.

Important Notes:

  • We will choose one of the two roads, S434 Airport Road (Honghai Lake) or G318 (Zhedoshan), depending on the time available for sightseeing and the road conditions;
  • It is recommended not to take a bath for 3 days before going to the plateau to avoid catching a cold and causing altitude sickness, which will affect the whole trip.
  • The water and electricity supply in the Tibetan area is insufficient, and there may be occasional water and power outages. Please bring your own wet wipes and flashlights. The water temperature for bathing may be unstable, or there may be water outages during the bathing process. Therefore, you should bathe quickly. It is best to bathe after you have fully adapted to the Tibetan area.

Day 3 Yajiang - 18 Bends - Litang Letong Ancient Town - Maoya Grassland - Sister Lake - Cuopu Valley
Altitude: 2,600m - 4,014m - 3,300m | Distance: 250km, about 6 hours’ drive

After breakfast, we leave Yajiang by car, experiencing the thrilling climb of the "Heaven Road's Eighteen Bends". We'll navigate the "Scissors Bend Tunnel" and then cross the "Kazi La Mountain" (4,718 meters) to reach Litaung, the hometown of Dingzhen. This place boasts magnificent scenery, and the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, once expressed his longing for Litaung in a poem: "Oh, white crane, please lend me your wings. I won't fly far, just to visit Litaung..."

Our next stop is the "Letong Ancient Town and Qianhu Tibetan Village", featured in the promotional video of "Dingzhen's World." This world's largest traditional Tibetan village community boasts over 4,000 traditional houses, making it a perfect place to explore Tibetan culture and the Kangba style. Following our tour guide's explanations, we'll visit the "318 Memory Weibo Museum," "Kangba People Weibo Museum," "Rengang Ancient House (the birthplace of thirteen respected living Buddhas)," and the "Tsangyang Gyatso Weibo Museum." You might even have a chance to meet Dingzhen!

Next, we head to the Changqingchun Ke'er Temple, the oldest and largest Gelug Yellow Sect Tibetan Buddhist temple in the Kangba region, where we'll learn about its legendary stories.

After the tour, our journey continues. We'll pass by the Wuliang River and cross the "Rabbit Ear Mountain" (4,696 meters), resembling the shape of a rabbit. We'll also pass by the Haizi Mountain Nature Reserve (altitude: 4,500 meters), home to the Daocheng ancient glacier site, the largest on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. As we enjoy music inside the car, we can admire the magnificent scenery of the Maoyan Prairie. From June to August, the vast grassland bursts into life with wildflowers like Bangjinmeiduo, Gesanghua, and countless others, creating a splendid world of color.

On Haizi Mountain lie the Sister Lakes, two pools of azure serenity nestled close together. Each breath seems to carry their captivating tranquility. Like precious gems nestled in the desolate mountains, they appear as if the compassion of the gods has crystallized into tears. Pure and flawless, they are inviting and delightful.

Continuing our journey and enjoying the roadside attractions, we'll soon reach the Sichuan border in Batang.

Special Reminders:

  1. Altitude Acclimatization: Having acclimated to the higher altitudes over the past few days, today's journey will take us further into the high-altitude region. To prevent altitude sickness, our company has portable oxygen tanks available on board for emergency use.
  2. Accommodation: Depending on factors such as season, road conditions, and room availability, we will arrange accommodation at either the Zopugou Valley entrance or within the Zopugou Scenic Area. If rooms are fully booked during peak season, we will arrange alternative accommodations in Batang County.

Day 9 Lhasa City Tour | Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street
Altitude: 3,650m | Distance: 20km, about 0.5 hour

Today, it is the time to explore Lhasa by visiting the world-famous Potala Palace, a World Heritage site and the picture behind the 50 RMB. And then, you will explore Lhasa by visiting Jokhang Temple, a world cultural heritage site renowned for its brilliant architecture, culture, art, and history. Finally, you can stroll through the famous Barkhor Street with locals and learn more about the daily kora life of Tibetans.

In the morning, you can walk up to the Potala Palace to explore. Not only is it the landmark of Tibet, but it is also the traditional residence and winter palace of the Dalai Lama (1649-1959). After climbing 365 steps from the gate of the Potala Palace to reach the Red Palace, you will arrive at the highest palace in the world at an altitude of 3,700m, where you can enjoy an excellent panoramic view of Lhasa city. As you explore the principal halls, chapels, and shrines of past Dalai Lamas in the Red Palace, you will be amazed and moved by its remarkable paintings, gorgeous jeweled works, skilled carving, colorful ornamentation, and the mystery stories behind the treasures. Inside the Potala Palace, you will meet many Tibetan pilgrims who come from afar to pray at this sacred site, making it a lifetime destination for them. You can also ask your guide to provide more stories about Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd king of Tibet, who first built the Potala Palace in the 7th century for his marriage to Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty. (Please note that the visit order may be adjusted based on the visiting time specified on your Potala Palace ticket. All visitors are required to visit the palace with a tour group and remain inside for one hour. Please be advised that photography is prohibited inside the palace.)

Located in the heart of Lhasa for over 1300 years, the Jokhang Temple is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists from all over the world. Famed as the spiritual center of Tibet, it is said that the Jokhang Monastery was built for King Songtsen Gampo's two brides: Chinese Princess Wencheng and Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti. "Jokhang" means "House of Buddha", and it houses a life-size statue of the 12-year-old Sakyamuni, which is considered a treasure of the Buddhist world. This is why Buddhist pilgrims consider it the holiest destination. The Jakhong temple is also renowned for its beautiful architecture. You can admire the intricate carvings, colorful murals, ornate decorations, and details of the building, which is a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. Time seems to stand still as you watch people pray in front of the temple during the day and night. (Please note that the visit order may be adjusted based on the reservation of your Jokhang Temple Ticket Reservation.)

Afterward, take a walk on busy Barkhor Street near the Jokhang Monastery, which was a place for Buddhists to do a kora (pilgrim circuit) in ancient times. Nowadays, it has become a thriving local market where you can drink a pot of yak butter tea, dress in Tibetan clothes for photos, and pick up some local Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indian handicrafts and souvenirs.

Travelers should plan ahead and allow sufficient time for the permit application process, as it can take one to two weeks to obtain the necessary permits.
All foreign travelers are advised to make their bookings at least one week in advance and send the necessary documents to us for obtaining the permits. However, if you plan to visit Mount Kailash, it is recommended to book at least two weeks in advance, as it may take longer to obtain the necessary permits.

In a Tibet group tour, there are two main types of accommodation choices on a Tibet group tour: basic standard and comfortable. In major cities like Lhasa, there are a variety of accommodation options available, ranging from 3 star to 4 star hotels. In more remote areas, such as near Mount Everest or Mount Kailash, the accommodations may be more basic, with simple guesthouses or tented camps. We will email you the detailed hotel arrangement after your booking.

If there is a single room due to gender reasons, we will arrange a triple room (or double standard room with and extra bed) or pay the single room supplement by the yourself.

Happy and enjoyable journey
This is my first time experience going thru a tour group by communicating with Kayla, my planner. Everything was properly arranged. My 8days tour with Max our guide who is attentive, friendly and helpful by answering all my queries. Driver also very friendly. The trip with a minimum 1 - 2 sight-seeing per day was favorable to me as I was experiencing high altitude issue early of the journey. The group size of 14 people was indeed nice and everyone get along well. I am thankful to Asia Odyssey for having an itinerary that meet my expectation.
