What is Fujian Tulou, China (Facts & History)

Location: Near Xiamen, Fujian, ca. 150-180 km away

Type: Rural residential dwellings

Styles: Circular, square, and courtyard-shaped tulou buildings

Ticket prices: 50 to 90 RMB

Main places to visit: Nanjing County, Yongding County, and Hua'an County in Fujian.

Highlights: Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, Chengqi Lou (King of Tulou), and Chuxi Tulou Cluster.

Fujian Tulou is a remarkable type of residential dwelling constructed with earth materials. The Hakka people, known for their architectural ingenuity, built massive 3 to 5-story Tulou buildings in circular, rectangular, and courtyard styles. These structures housed 150-800 people of the same surname family. With enclosed structures opening only to the sky and a single entrance, these castle-like buildings are truly extraordinary. Some circular Tulou buildings even rival the size of the Roman Colosseum.

Fujian Tulou History

History of Fujian Hakka Tulou dates back over a thousand years. The Hakka people settled in the mountains of Fujian, seeking refuge from war. However, they faced challenges from wild animals. In their wisdom, the farmers built sturdy enclosed dwellings, with the lower floors of the Tulou buildings lacking windows. Maritime trade during the Qing Dynasty brought prosperity, leading to the expansion of Tulou buildings. The largest Tulou, Chengqi Building, can accommodate 800 people with 400 rooms. Today, Tulou remains a cherished home for the Hakka people.

Its unique architectural style, community living concept, and harmony with nature have earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with 46 designated locations.

Which Fujian Tulou to Visit - Nanjing Tulou, Yongding Tulou or Hua’an Tulou

Nanjing Tulou & Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster (for Famous and Iconic Connoisseurs)

Nanjing Tulou is renowned for its association with the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, which has been featured prominently in magazines, making it a must-visit destination for avid appreciators of classics. Additionally, the Yunshuiyao scenic area, where natural scenery blends with Tulou architecture, and the Hekeng Tulou Cluster, known as the hometown of Mulan, have further solidified Nanjing Tulou's position as one of the most popular destinations among Fujian Tulou.

Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster (田螺坑土楼群): Super star! This cluster features a square Tulou surrounded by four round Tulous, creating an incredible landscape when combined with the surrounding terraced fields. The upper viewing platform provides the best vantage point to admire this architectural marvel, with a picturesque setting reminiscent of "four dishes and one soup".

Yuchang Building (裕昌楼): This intriguing structure resembles a leaning tower of Pisa but on the inside. The third floor leans to the right, while the fourth floor leans to the left. Don't worry about it suddenly collapsing; it has maintained this unique structure for over 700 years.

Yunshuiyao Scenic Area (云水谣景区): Scattered throughout the ancient town are numerous Tulou buildings, and the waterwheels in the village have served as inspiration for movies. The highlights include Huaiyuan Building, which was constructed without using any nails, and the imposing Hegui Building, a five-story structure built on marshland. The Hakka people are indeed ingenious!

Hekeng Tulou Cluster (河坑土楼群): Known as the hometown of Mulan in Disney's movie, this cluster offers a viewing platform where you can observe the arrangement of the Tulou buildings resembling the Big Dipper.

Yongding Tulou & Chengqi Building (Lovers of magnificent landscapes)

Yongding Tulou (永定土楼), situated next to Nanjing Tulou, is famous for its breathtaking Tulou landscapes. Whether you're exploring the largest standalone Tulou building known as Chengqi Building (King of Tulou), admiring the impressive Tulou clusters, or marveling at the stunning Tulou architectural styles, your visit to Fujian Tulou will be a captivating and awe-inspiring journey.

Chengqi Building (承启楼): Showcasing the Gaobei Tulou Cluster, Chengqi Building holds the prestigious title of being the king of Tulou, thanks to its immense circular size. It's often described as being half the size of the Roman Colosseum and once accommodated over 800 residents at its peak. Stepping inside feels like entering a bustling mini-city.

Chuxi Tulou Cluster (初溪土楼群): This cluster offers the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring views of Tulou. Standing on the observation platform outside the village, you'll be greeted by verdant valleys, lush emerald green rice fields, and a dense concentration of Tulou buildings. The atmosphere here radiates harmony and tranquility, creating a truly blissful experience.

Hongkeng Tulou Cluster (洪坑土楼群): Here, you'll encounter an array of Tulou structures, each showcasing the extraordinary architectural talents of the Hakka people. From the bird-like Fuyu Building to the palace-like Kuiju Building, and the round Tulou with a fusion of Chinese and Western elements, Zhencheng Building (Prince of Tulou), the variety of designs will leave you in awe.

Hua’an Tulou (Aviod Crowds)

Hua'an Tulou (华安土楼), a lesser-known but equally impressive Tulou area, is an excellent choice for those seeking to avoid the crowds often associated with the more famous clusters. This region offers three of the most unique and well-preserved Tulous: Eryi Building, Nanyang Building, and Dongyang Building.

Eryi Building (二宜楼), is renowned for its exquisite carvings and intricate woodwork.

Nanyang Building (南阳楼), built in 1650, is the oldest Tulou in the Hua'an region. It's a perfect example of "round outside, square inside" architecture.

Dongyang Building (东阳楼), though smaller, stands out with its unique, octagonal design. It's a testament to the adaptability of Tulou architecture.
