Before the Trip: Things You Should Know
Guangzhou is the food capital of southern China. Its light, delicate Cantonese cuisine is widely considered the most approachable and delicious by Western visitors.
Guangzhou is at the heart of the Greater Bay Area. Using Guangzhou as a base, you can easily explore Shenzhen, Foshan, Hong Kong, and Macao, with high-speed trains connecting the region.

If you are visiting Guangzhou for the Canton Fair, it's recommended to reserve 3–5 days to explore the city and its surroundings—Guangzhou today is very different from what it was 10 years ago.
The itineraries below (3–7 days) include both arrival and departure days, whether you fly directly to Guangzhou or transit via Hong Kong.
How Many Days Do You Need for Guangzhou

Guangzhou Itinerary 1-2 Days - Layover Trip
Got a layover in Guangzhou or a few free hours during the Canton Fair?
Even with just 3–8 hours, you can still get a real taste of the city—whether it's sightseeing, food, or shopping.
Option 1: Quick Sightseeing – Explore the Old City

If you want to see Guangzhou's highlights in a short time, focus on the historic area around Chen Clan Ancestral Hall metro station.
The metro system can take you to most major attractions, and once you arrive, exploring is mainly done on foot.
It's highly recommended to store your luggage and travel light for a smoother experience.
Here are the key attractions, nearest metro stations, and suggested visit times:
| Attraction | Nearest Metro Station | Suggested Visiting Time |
|---|---|---|
| Yuexiu Park | Yuexiu Park Station | 1–2 hours |
| Nanyue King Mausoleum Museum | Yuexiu Park Station | 1–1.5 hours |
| Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall | Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station | 30–60 mins |
| Beijing Road Pedestrian Street | Gongyuanqian Station | 1–2 hours |
| Canton Tower | Canton Tower Station | 1–1.5 hours |

Option 2: Food Hunt – Eat Your Way Through Guangzhou
If food is your priority (and honestly, it should be), skip the metro and take a taxi directly to your destination to save time.
The best Cantonese food is concentrated in the old city, especially around:
- Beijing Road Pedestrian Street
- Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street
Here you'll find classic, time-honored Cantonese restaurants, perfect for dim sum, roast meats, and local desserts—all within walking distance.

Option 3: Shopping Spree – Modern Guangzhou
Short on time but want to shop? Guangzhou is surprisingly one of China's best-value shopping cities.
For convenience and variety, head to the Tianhe area (between Guangzhou East Railway Station and Canton Tower), where malls are clustered together.
It's my favourite area and below is the basic information for these shopping malls:
| Mall Name | Features |
|---|---|
| Grandview Plaza | Indoor ocean park, ice rink, shopping & entertainment |
| Teemall | All-in-one mall with AEON supermarket and major brands |
| Parc Central | Open, park-style mall, great for photos |
| Taikoo Hui | High-end luxury brands, modern and upscale |
| Link Plaza | Trendy brands, popular with younger shoppers |
| Fashion Tianhe | Underground mall, budget-friendly, street food |
| Victoria Plaza | Large UNIQLO, convenient shopping stop |
Guangzhou Itinerary 3 Days – Guangzhou Highlight Tour for First Timers
If it's your first time in Guangzhou, 3 days is just enough to get a solid feel for the city.
Since this includes your arrival and departure days, you'll realistically have about 2 full days of exploration—but with smart planning, that's more than enough to experience both the historic charm and modern energy of Guangzhou.
Day 1: Arrival in Guangzhou – Take It Easy or Taste the Night

Your first day depends on where you're coming from—but it's easy to plan:
If you're flying long-haul from overseas: Take it as a rest day. Check in, recover from jet lag, and recharge for the days ahead.
If you're coming from Hong Kong by high-speed train: You may have half a day or more—with smart planning, even a full day of sightseeing is possible.
If you're arriving from nearby (Japan, Southeast Asia, or major Chinese cities): You'll likely arrive in the afternoon—perfect for a food + night stroll.
Head to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street or Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street for street food, shopping, and city vibes.
Prefer something quieter? Try a relaxed walk at Liwan Lake Park.
- Old City Area (Yuexiu / Beijing Road / Yongqingfang): Great metro access, packed with traditional food spots, and full of local life—perfect for soaking up Guangzhou's history and culture.
- Zhujiang New Town (Canton Tower / Tianhe area): Modern skyline, close to business districts and the Canton Fair—ideal if you prefer a sleek, contemporary vibe.
Day 2: One Perfect Day in Guangzhou – Where Tradition Meets Modern

This is your main exploration day, and it's all about balancing history, culture, and modern city life.
Morning: Step into Lingnan Culture
Start your day at Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, one of the most iconic sites in the city.
This architectural masterpiece is packed with intricate carvings and symbolic details. A guide (or some background knowledge) really helps you appreciate what you're seeing.
Late Morning: Parks, Legends & History
Head to Yuexiu Park, the green heart of the city.
Here you'll find the famous Five Rams Statue, which explains why Guangzhou is known as the "City of Rams."
Nearby, Zhenhai Tower offers a quick look at over 2,000 years of Guangzhou's history.
Just a short walk away, the Nanyue King Mausoleum Museum showcases ancient tombs, jade artifacts, and immersive archaeological displays.
Afternoon: Street Life & Cantonese Food
Make your way to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, the city's most vibrant shopping area.
It's a mix of modern malls and historic streets—and one of the best places to try authentic Cantonese cuisine. Take a break, enjoy dim sum, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Evening: Skyline & River Cruise
As the sun sets, visit Canton Tower, the symbol of modern Guangzhou. You can go up for panoramic views or simply admire it from below.
End your day with a relaxing cruise along the Pearl River. With city lights reflecting on the water, it's one of the best ways to experience Guangzhou at night.
Cruises typically last 50–90 minutes, with various departure piers and ticket options available. Below is the table for different ships with duration and piers.
| Pier Name | Cruise Duration | Standard Cabin Price (RMB) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tianzi Pier | 60–70 mins | 98–138 | Historic pier, close to Beijing Road |
| Dashatou Pier | 60–70 mins | 68–108 | Most choices, good value |
| Canton Tower Pier | 50–60 mins | 108–138 | Best view of Canton Tower |
| Haixinsha West Pier | 50–60 mins | 108–138 | Great view of Zhujiang New Town CBD |

Day 3: Departure Day – Flexible and Full of Surprises

Your last day is flexible—just match your plan to your departure time:
Morning departure: Keep it simple. Enjoy breakfast near your hotel, pick up some souvenirs, and head out.
Afternoon departure: You still have time for a relaxed morning—grab dim sum, do some last shopping, or visit a local park.
Evening departure: Lucky you—you've got time for a deeper local experience.
Explore Yongqingfang and Liwan Lake Park. This area is full of traditional architecture, local life, and cultural spots, including the former residence of Bruce Lee. It's all walkable and takes about 2–4 hours.
Guangzhou Itinerary 4 Days - Add a Perfect Day Trip
With 4 days in Guangzhou, you can comfortably follow the 3-day itinerary and still have time to explore one nearby destination.
Thanks to the excellent transport network, a day trip is easy and efficient—and two of the best choices are Shunde (for food lovers) or Foshan (for culture and kung fu). Both can be done as a round trip in one day.
Option 1: Shunde – A Paradise for Food Lovers

If you're traveling for food, this is the one. Shunde is widely known as the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine—often described as "where great chefs are made."
What makes Shunde special is its focus on fresh ingredients, delicate flavors, and refined techniques. Even simple dishes here can be surprisingly sophisticated.
Some must-try local specialties include:
- Shunde-style fish sashimi (yusheng)
- Braised goose
- Double-skin milk dessert
- Daliang fried milk
- Jun'an steamed pork
- Chencun rice noodles
- Lunjiao sponge cake
One of the most fun food experiences here? A single fish prepared in 10+ different ways—from raw slices to soups and stir-fries.
Whether you're eating at a small local shop or a well-known restaurant, the quality is consistently impressive. Honestly, you could spend the whole day just eating your way through the town.
3 Days Guangzhou Kaiping Diaolou & Foshan Tour with Lingnan Culture
Guangzhou - Foshan - Jiangmen Kaiping - Guangzhou
Option 2: Foshan – Kung Fu, Culture & Lingnan Heritage
If you're more into culture and history, head to Foshan, often called the "Kung Fu City."
Foshan is the hometown of legendary martial artists like Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man, and it's also closely connected to Bruce Lee's family roots.
It's considered the birthplace of famous southern martial arts styles like Wing Chun and Hung Ga.
The highlight of your visit will likely be the Foshan Ancestral Temple (Zumiao), a stunning temple complex dating back to the Song Dynasty.
Here's what makes it special:
- Exquisite Lingnan architecture with wood carvings, brick carvings, and ceramic art
- Daily performances of lion dance, kung fu, and Cantonese opera
- Cultural sites like the Ip Man Hall and Wong Fei-hong Museum
It's not just a temple—it's the cultural heart of old Foshan, where history, art, and martial arts all come together.

Transportation Tips – Getting Around the Greater Bay Area
Smooth transportation is the key to making this itinerary work comfortably.
High-Speed Trains (Main Option)
Between Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, high-speed trains are the fastest and easiest option (about 1 hour between each city).
- Guangzhou South Railway Station (main high-speed hub): Located in the south of the city, about 40–60 minutes from downtown areas like Tianhe or Yuexiu by metro.
- Guangzhou East Railway Station: Closer to the city center (Tianhe area), more convenient for some travelers, but with fewer high-speed options compared to South Station.
- Futian Station: Located in the city center—more convenient for travelers and closer to major attractions.
- Shenzhen North Station: Larger hub but farther from downtown—expect 30–40 minutes to reach central areas.
- Hong Kong West Kowloon Station: Located in central Kowloon, with easy access to Tsim Sha Tsui and other key districts.

Crossing Between Shenzhen & Hong Kong
Traveling between Shenzhen and Hong Kong by high-speed train is very straightforward:
- Depart from Futian or Shenzhen North
- Arrive at West Kowloon Station
Complete immigration and customs procedures at the station (both exit and entry)
The process is simple and well-organized—just allow a bit of extra time (usually 30–60 minutes total).
