The Origin of the Name Wangxian
The name "Wangxian" (meaning Gazing at the Immortal) is not a modern marketing invention—it carries a historical legacy spanning over a thousand years. According to records, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, a renowned hermit named Hu Zhao declined recruitment by the powerful warlord Cao Cao, instead crossing the Yangtze River southward with his wife and children to live in seclusion here. His filial son, Hu Wenli, though unable to follow his father into the mountains, built a platform for gazing at him in the valley below, ascending it on the first and fifteenth of each month to gaze toward his father's dwelling and express his longing .
Locals believed that Hu Zhao achieved immortality upon his death, establishing a shrine in his honor. Later emperors bestowed posthumous titles upon him, venerating him as the founding patriarch of Taoism on Mount Ling. Thus, this valley came to be known as Wangxian. This legend, weaving together the cultures of reclusion and filial piety, infused Wangxian Valley with its original ethereal soul.

Where is Wangxian Valley & How to Get to Wangxian Valley?
Wangxian Vallley is hidden in the mountain areas in Guangxin District, Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, China. There is no high-speed rail stations or airports within 20 kilometers of it, so it is generally recommended to go to Shangrao city first if you want to get there. Normally, visitors get there from Shanghai, Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), Jingdezhen, Hangzhou, etc.
Get to Shangrao
Shangrao has its own railway station and airport. You can ride a train or take a flight to get there. Normally, visitors travel to Shangrao from Shanghai (2.5 hours around by train), but you can also get from other destinations.
Shangrao High Speed Railway Station (上饶高铁站)

From Shangrao to Wangxian Valley
Upon arriving Shangrao, you need to transfer to a bus, taxi or car to Wangxian Valley. A bus ride takes about 1.5-2 hours. The bus boarding point will depend on your arrival location in Shangrao, and the alighting point will be the Wangxianggu stop with the same name. A direct shuttle bus runs daily from Shangrao High-speed Rail Station from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM to the scenic area (30 RMB/person, 1-hour journey).
Considering the inconvenience of taking a bus, you are more suggested to ride a private car or taxi. About 1 hour or so you can arrive in Wangxian Valley in ease. Remember to seek help from a professional travel agency rather than an unlicensed car directly, otherwise your travel safety cannot be guaranteed.
