"I want to go back to Kunming."

It was the first workday of early autumn when I received a call from the other side of the Eurasian continent, from Britain. The voice was gentle yet filled with anticipation. It belonged to Jess, a woman in her eighties, who told me in a slow, clear voice that she wanted to go back to Kunming—the city where she had lived for two years as a child.

The Gateway of Dali Ancient Town, Yunnan

She said it had been a long time since she had set foot on that land, but the memories of Green Lake Park, the old streets, and the wind by Dianchi Lake had never left her dreams. She and two family members were planning a trip to Yunnan. It wouldn't be long, about ten days, but she hoped this journey would be more than just rushed sightseeing; she wanted to truly reconnect with her past.

Time may have taken away her youth, but that land is eternal and ever-new. I knew I had to make sure she could truly touch her memories. This might be one of the few remaining opportunities she had to walk this path herself.

Old Memories Meets New Experiences in Yunnan

Although her steps were no longer light and long walks would tire her, her memories held a powerful pull. From the moment I spoke with Jess's family, my focus shifted from just planning a route to figuring out how to gently awaken her memories while ensuring every step was safe and comfortable.

We started in Kunming. I intentionally made the sightseeing easy and a little bit ritualistic, ensuring Green Lake Park and Grand View Tower were on the itinerary.

The morning mist hadn't yet lifted from Green Lake Park, and the lake shimmered faintly, with a few red-billed gulls gliding over the surface. The driver parked the car not far from the path's entrance, with a wheelchair ready. But Jess insisted on walking. She walked slowly, each step like a measure of her old distance. When she reached the pavilion in the middle of the lake, she suddenly stopped and pointed to an old tree nearby. "My father took a picture of me right there," she said. In that moment, her eyes lit up as if time had been gently turned back. They stopped at a quiet tea house by the lake, brewed a pot of Pu'er, and she sipped it quietly, gazing at the water without saying a word. I knew that the sleeping years were slowly waking up in her heart.

Summer Lotus, Green Lake

The next day's visit to the Grand View Tower was accompanied by a guide who was an expert on Kunming's modern history. He didn't give long, boring explanations. Instead, he walked with Jess, adding details that might have been familiar to her: which old road led to her home, or which bridge used to flood during the rainy season.

These small bits of narrative were like a key, unlocking doors deep within her memory. She stood on the tower, looking out at Dianchi Lake. The wind swept through her white hair, and she didn't speak, just stood there for a long time, as if having a conversation with her past self.

The nostalgic part of the trip in Kunming came to an end. We then moved slowly west, to Dali, Lijiang, and finally Shangri-La. Jess's family was curious about the culture of this land, and I knew that for Jess, long-distance travel was a challenge. So, I kept each drive under three hours and prioritized hotels with elevators, heating, and 24-hour service. In Dali, they went to a Bai village in Xizhou in the morning to watch locals weave and make cheese. While her family watched an old woman meticulously pull the milk into fine threads, Jess sat quietly under the eaves, watching with a gentle smile.

In Lijiang, we arranged a private viewing of the Impressions Lijiang show. When the music started, Jess closed her eyes. Her family later told me it was the most relaxed she had been on the whole trip.

As for Shangri-La, the altitude was a significant test. I had oxygen tanks prepared for her in advance and arranged for a doctor to monitor her condition at all times. At Songzanlin Monastery, we only visited the main hall and the outer corridors, with no pressure to climb to the top. But when the sunlight hit the golden roof, she looked up at the light and whispered, "This looks so much like what I was told about Tibet." Her family stood by her side, and in that moment, language wasn't necessary.

Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery, Shangri-La

Throughout the entire journey, the most important thing for me was to never let her feel like she "had to" do anything. Each day's itinerary had room to breathe. If she was tired, she could go back to the hotel. If she was inspired, she could walk a little further. Her family later told me that this freedom—the ability to not push herself—was what made their trip so peaceful and joyful.

When the plane took off from Kunming, Jess sent me a message. She said she had dreamed of her childhood courtyard, and of her father holding her hand as they walked along that stone-paved path. She said she didn't come back to find something but to confirm that the memories were real and the feelings were still there. And my role was to pave a safe, warm path to her past. This journey wasn't just about seeing the world—it was about finding herself again.
