In the spring of 2024, I received an inquiry email from Singapore. Mr. Matthew wrote:
“My wife Linda is turning 65 this year, and I want to take her to China to celebrate and fulfill her lifelong wish.”
Both over 65, Matthew and Linda value comfort and quality in their travels. They were deeply drawn to China’s history and culture, hoping this trip would immerse them in Beijing’s ancient grandeur and Xi’an’s timeless relics.

Thoughtful Planning: A Journey Rich Yet Relaxed
Considering their age and preference for a slower pace, I designed an 8-day Beijing & Xi’an itinerary with international flights and high-speed train connections included.
- To keep the journey both enriching and comfortable, I carefully adjusted the rhythm of each day:
- The first day in Beijing was light, allowing them to ease into the new environment.
- Extra rest time was built into each site visit, with electric carts and cable cars arranged where possible — like taking the cable car up and toboggan down at Mutianyu Great Wall.
- Every restaurant was personally checked by me for menu and ambience suitability, and for Linda's birthday, I arranged a special Dynasty Dinner celebration in Xi'an.
Beijing: The Cultural Heart of China
Upon arrival in Beijing, their guide welcomed them at the airport with a gift and helped them settle into a comfortable city-center hotel.
At Tian’anmen Square, they posed proudly with the national flag before entering the Forbidden City. With a bilingual guide, they explored from the golden rooftops of the Hall of Supreme Harmony to the intricate jade and calligraphy in the Treasure Gallery. Linda sighed: “Walking through here feels like traveling back in time.”
The next day brought their highlight — the Mutianyu Great Wall. With the cable car up and toboggan down, they could enjoy the adventure without exhausting themselves. Standing hand in hand atop the wall, wind in their hair, Matthew laughed:
“At our age, it’s the perfect balance of comfort and adventure.”
At the Summer Palace, they cruised Kunming Lake on a painted boat, listening to stories of Empress Dowager Cixi. Linda smiled: “This garden is even more poetic than I imagined.”
To capture the essence of old Beijing, I arranged a rickshaw ride through the hutongs. Inside a traditional courtyard home, they sipped tea and listened to stories of local life — a memory they found especially heartwarming.
An Unexpected Setback: Care in Action
On the fourth day, Linda woke up with a mild stomach upset and chose to rest. The guide contacted me immediately, and I quickly rearranged their plan:
Cancelled the day’s visits to the Temple of Heaven and Lama Temple (with a refund of the ticket fees arranged). Coordinated with the hotel to prepare a light diet and ginger tea.
I reassured them:“Please don’t worry. Health always comes first. Tomorrow’s plan will be adjusted to how you’re feeling.”
By the following day, Linda was feeling better, and they continued smoothly to Xi’an by high-speed train. Matthew messaged me: “Your calm response really reassured us. We never felt left alone.”

Xi’an: Walking Through a Thousand Years
In Xi'an, their anticipation was highest for the Terracotta Warriors. To avoid long queues, I arranged VIP access. As they stepped into the excavation pits, Linda whispered:
“It’s far more magnificent than any picture I’ve seen.”
On the Ancient City Wall, they circled atop in an electric cart while the guide shared stories of Tang and Song defenses. Relaxed and smiling, Matthew said:
“This is just the right pace for us.”
That evening, they donned elegant Hanfu costumes and strolled through the dazzling lights of the Great Tang All Day Mall. Linda laughed:
“At 65, I didn’t expect to feel like a Tang princess for a night!”
During their day at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Muslim Quarter, they balanced cultural exploration with culinary delights, sampling roujiamo and yangrou paomo. Linda said:“The food is as rich as the culture itself.”
Their final night was the most memorable — a Dynasty Dinner birthday celebration. With traditional music and dance performances, a cake was brought out, and the entire hall joined in singing. Linda’s eyes welled with tears:
“This is the most memorable birthday of my life.”
The Journey’s End: More Than Just Travel
At Xi’an Railway Station, they bid farewell to their guide with gratitude. Matthew said:
“This trip gave us not just the wonders of China’s history, but also your constant care. For seniors like us, that means the world.”
My Reflection
As a travel consultant, I believe a journey is not only about reaching destinations but about peace of mind and companionship along the way.
For Matthew and Linda, this was a once-in-a-lifetime birthday celebration. For me, it was the joy of turning their dreams into warm, lasting memories — and that is the most meaningful achievement of all.
