A family sets out to enjoy a beautiful destination together, but more often than not, the reality of "things not going as planned" can quickly lead to frustration. That's when I step in to ease the burden on overwhelmed parents. Take, for example, a mother from California named Sarah.

Visited Avatar Mountain in Zhangjiajie with AOT

In early spring 2025, I received Sarah's inquiry email on a day when a gentle rain was falling outside my window. She was planning to bring her elderly parents, who were in their seventies and had some mobility issues, and her two energetic but easily bored children, ages five and eight, for their first trip to China and a visit to Zhangjiajie.

They only had four days but hoped to experience as much as possible of the "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" wonderland. Her words conveyed both excitement and deep worry: her parents couldn't walk far, her kids couldn't sit still, and she wanted to make sure both generations were happy.

I knew there was a way to solve this!

Designing A Layered Itinerary for Parents

The beauty of Zhangjiajie lies in its rugged, untouched nature. The quartz sandstone peaks of Wulingyuan soar into the sky like a giant's sculptures. Tianzi Mountain, shrouded in mist, is a misty fairyland of peaks. Tianmen Mountain has a winding mountain road and a glass skywalk suspended over a sheer cliff. The Grand Canyon's glass bridge hangs over a massive abyss. But all this grandeur comes at a cost of physical stamina.

How could a wheelchair-assisted senior and two kids who get restless after a half-hour car ride possibly immerse themselves in this landscape together?

I chose not to compromise. Instead, I decided to create a "layered itinerary".

For each day, we prepared two different paces: a "slow-paced tour" designed for the elderly, and a "fun adventure" for the kids. From the moment they arrived, the airport transfer van was equipped with child safety seats, small blankets, snack bags, and a few light toys and a tablet with cartoons, just in case the long mountain road ride caused any emotional breakdowns. In their luggage, besides the usual medications, I specifically told the local agency to prepare a foldable wheelchair and an emergency oxygen tank to ensure the grandparents could rest comfortably at any time.

Happy Zhangjiajie Trip for All

On the first day, as planned, they visited Tianmen Mountain. They avoided the crowded hiking trail and took the cable car straight to the summit in the early morning. As the car slowly ascended through the billowing sea of clouds, the kids pressed their faces against the windows, exclaiming in wonder, while the grandparents quietly watched the shifting mountain scenery outside.

At the entrance to the glass skywalk, I made a clever arrangement: the kids, led by the guide, had a short walk on the safest section of the transparent path, taking excited photos. The grandparents sat on a nearby viewing platform with an awning, sipping hot tea and admiring the majestic Tianmen Cave from a distance.

We used a similar approach for the second day at Yuanjiajie. The Bailong Elevator took them to the summit, and the grandparents rode an eco-friendly shuttle directly to the main viewing platform. Meanwhile, the kids, accompanied by the guide, walked a bit further to find the "Hallelujah Mountain" model for a photo op.

The third day’s trip to the Grand Canyon was the one that gave me the most pause. The glass bridge was too thrilling for the elderly but a huge draw for the kids. In the end, I adjusted the route: the whole family first took a boat ride into the canyon. As the boat glided along, the cliffs on both sides reflected on the water like a painting, allowing the grandparents to enjoy the full view with ease. After getting off the boat, the kids briefly walked onto the glass bridge for the thrilling experience, while the grandparents stayed at a riverside pavilion, resting and watching their family members from afar with binoculars.

That evening back at the hotel, the kids couldn't stop talking about the feeling of "walking on air," while the grandparents looked through the group photos the guide had taken, a look of contentment on their faces.

On the last day, they took a walk along Golden Whip Stream. The path here is flat, the stream babbles softly, and the ancient trees reach for the sky. The grandparents sat on a bench by the stream, listening to the birds and watching the water flow, while the kids played on the shallow banks, picking up rocks and counting fish.

A few days after the trip, I received an email from Sarah. She said her parents never imagined they could see such stunning scenery in such a rugged place, and the kids were still drawing "flying mountains" at home. She said she had been worried the trip would become a tiring tug-of-war, but it had turned into one of the most precious memories her family had.

I looked at my computer screen, thinking of all the details I had confirmed in those few days: whether the wheelchair could get through the ticket gate, if the cable car had a window seat reserved, whether the kids would cry along the way... It was all worth it. After all, happiness is one of the most important starting points for any trip.
