Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1 Arrival in Xian | Airport Pick-up and Hotel Check-in, Free Time to Explore

Following your arrival in Xi'an,our team will meet you at the airport or train station for a comfortable transfer to your hotel. After checking in, the rest of the day is yours to relax or start exploring the city’s historic center at your own pace.

For your free time, I highly recommend visiting the Bell and Drum Tower Square. As evening falls, these Ming Dynasty structures are beautifully lit up, offering a perfect backdrop for photos where ancient architecture meets the modern city.

Just steps away, you can dive into the lively Muslim Quarter. Wander through narrow lanes filled with food stalls, souvenir shops, and the smell of lamb skewers on open grills. Grab a snack, watch noodles being pulled by hand, or just soak in the energy of the crowd.

If you have time, step into the Great Mosque - a quiet courtyard complex hidden in the middle of all the action. Or visit Gao's Grand Courtyard, a well-preserved traditional home where you can watch a Shadow Puppet show or try a calligraphy class (optional).

Arrival Ideas:

Xi'an is easy to reach. The airport connects to major cities in China and beyond. By high-speed train, you can get here from Beijing in 4-5 hours, Shanghai in 6-7, Chengdu in 3-4, and Pingyao in about 3.

Day 2 Xi'an - Yucha Grand Canyon | Explore Yucha Grand Canyon

Morning: Drive to Yucha Grand Canyon

After breakfast, depart Xi'an for Yucha Grand Canyon (300km, 4-5 hours). The drive takes you through the Loess Plateau - you'll see terraced fields, traditional cave dwellings, and wide-open countryside, a stark contrast to Xi'an's bustle.

Afternoon: Light Hiking to Explore Yucha Grand Canyon

Known as “China's Antelope Canyon" and hailed by National Geographic as the “Loess Plateau's natural crack wonder," Yucha Grand Canyon is a true gift from nature. Around hundreds of millions of years ago, a strong earthquake split a loess mountain, and millions of years of rainwater erosion carved out this stunning landscape.

It's not just one canyon, but a group of four distinct ones-Longba Gou, Huabao Gou, Nanhe Gou, and Huashu Gou: each with its own charm. As you walk through the narrow sandstone cracks, you'll be amazed by the Danxia landforms: flowing lines, delicate textures, and dreamy colors that shift with the light.

It's a paradise for photographers and artists-every corner feels like a natural masterpiece. The trails are flat with wooden boardwalks, suitable for all ages, no strenuous hiking required.

Practical tips from our local guides:

  • Best photo time: 11:00-14:00, when sunlight directly filters down to show the canyon's full range of colors.
  • Bring a long-sleeve windbreaker (big temperature difference between inside and outside the canyon) and waterproof shoe covers.
  • We check the weather in advance-heavy rain may close the scenic area, so we'll adjust if needed.
  • Wide-angle lenses and light-colored clothes (white/light tones) make your photos stand out against the vivid rock backdrop.

Then we'll drive to Yan'an city (about 70km, 1-2 hours) and check into a clean and comfortable hotel. Have a good rest.

Day 3 Yan'an Zhongshan Grottoes - Wave Valley | The

Morning: Zhongshan Grottoes - Shaanxi's Hidden "Second Dunhuang"

After breakfast, head to Zhongshan Grottoes (110km, 1-2 hours) - a Northern Song Dynasty treasure hailed as the "Second Dunhuang." Unlike the famous Mogao Grottoes, this spot stays quiet, letting you soak in its craftsmanship without crowds.

Carved into the southern foot of Zhongshan Mountain, the grottoes are also called "Ten Thousand Buddha Cliff." Of the original 18 caves, 5 are open, with the 3rd Cave (copied in Shaanxi History Museum) as the highlight, known as the "most beautiful Mahavira Hall."

The central Buddha altar is carved from one stone, holding 16 life-sized Buddha statues (2-3 meters tall). Walls and pillars are covered with over 10,000 relief Buddha carvings-intricate, vivid, and truly breathtaking.

What you'll experience: Quiet moments to admire ancient stone art. No pushing or noise-just you, the carvings, and the sense of history. Our guide shares stories about how craftsmen built this 1,000-year-old wonder, making the stones come alive.

Afternoon: Wave Valley - Earth's Red "Fingerprints"

Continue to Jingbian Wave Valley (80km) - dubbed "Earth's fingerprint" and "time's growth rings." This isn't ordinary rock; it's 150 million years in the making. Back in the Jurassic period, huge sand dunes settled, covered by red sand soaked in groundwater. Minerals turned the sand into sandstone, and millions of years of wind and water carved layers of wavy textures.

Unlike Arizona's Wave Valley (red and white stripes), Jingbian's Wave Valley glows with pure red-like frozen waves or burning earth. Walk the gentle trails, and you'll feel like stepping onto an alien landscape: undulating red sandstone, narrow valleys, and even blue-green lakes that contrast sharply with the rocks.

Easy hiking(suitable for all ages) with endless photo opportunities. No crowds-just you, the vast sky, and 150 million years of geological magic. Our guide leads you to the best spots to capture the rock's wavy lines at golden hour.

After exploring Wave Valley, we will drive back to Yan'an for a comfortable night at your hotel, giving you a chance to rest and prepare for the Yellow River's roar tomorrow.

Day 4 Yan'an to Qiankun Bay | The First Bend of the Yellow River

After a relaxed breakfast, depart Yan'an for Qiankun Bay (120km, 2-3 hours). The drive winds through the Loess Plateau, with views of rolling hills and Yellow River distant in the distance - building excitement for the day's highlight.

Recognized as one of the "Top 10 Most Beautiful Canyons in China," Qiankun Bay is the heart of the Yellow River Snake Curves National Geopark. Here, the river has carved through the loess mountains for millions of years, creating a perfect 320-degree curve that looks like a giant, natural Tai Chi symbol.

Standing on the edge of the canyon, you will truly understand the famous line: "The Yellow River comes from the heavens." The scale is so massive that it makes everything else feel small—huge rocks look like grains of sand, and we feel like tiny specks of dust.

Unlike the aggressive roar you might expect, the river here is surprisingly quiet and peaceful. It flows with a wide, calm grace that feels both ancient and powerful. It is a moment of pure awe that forces you to stop and simply breathe in the landscape.

After soaking in this incredible view, we drive to the Hotel, located just 8km from Hukou Waterfall. Staying this close to the river allows you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Loess Plateau. It also ensures we are just minutes away from tomorrow's grand finale, giving you a relaxing evening before we witness the Yellow River's power at sunrise.

Day 5 Hukou Waterfall (Yellow River) - Return to Xi'an - Departure

Your journey culminates today with the most powerful meeting of all - facing the roaring soul of the Yellow River itself.

After a short drive from your hotel, you'll arrive at Hukou Waterfall, the world's largest yellow waterfall. The mighty Yellow River, flowing wide and calm, is suddenly funneled into a narrow gorge just 30 meters wide and plunges down with immense force. The sound is like constant thunder, and the spray fills the air, often creating brilliant rainbows in the sunlight.

Standing here, you'll finally witness the famous “river pouring from the sky." It's not just a sight; it's a full-body experience where you feel the mist on your skin and the vibration in your chest - a true moment of awe and connection with nature's raw power.

Our practical tips for you:

  • Bring a disposable raincoat, a small towel, a change of clothes and a waterproof phone case- the mist soaks everything!
  • Wear dark clothes, they hide mud splatters from the water.
  • Skip flip-flops or thin sandals, the ground is slippery- sturdy shoes are best.

After this breathtaking finale, begin the scenic return drive to Xi'an (approx. 4 hours). You will be taken directly to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport or Xian railway station in time for your onward journey, filled with memories of canyon light, sandstone waves, serene river bends, and the unforgettable roar of Hukou.

Thank you for choosing Asia Odyssey Travel for your 5 days wild northern Shaanxi tour from Xi'an, and we are always here working for you and hope to see you again for your next trip to China/Asia. Safe journey!

What a 30-Day China Adventure — Exceeded My Expectation

I recently completed the “30 Days China Tour from Beijing” with Asia Odyssey Travel, and as someone from Singapore, I found it to be an exceptional experience.

Starting in Beijing, everything kicked off seamlessly — airport pick-up worked well, and our guide made us feel comfortable right away. Over the month we moved through a very broad selection of China’s landscapes, cities, history and culture. From the imposing Great Wall of China and Forbidden City in Beijing to ancient capitals, ethnic minority regions, high-speed train rides, rural scenery and modern metropolises.

Some of the highlights for me:

  • Visiting the Great Wall early in the morning when it was quiet and feeling the scale of it in person.
  • Seeing ancient city walls, historic towns and temples that really brought Chinese history to life.
  • Travelling by high-speed train across regions — the logistics were smooth and we always arrived on time.
  • Staying in a mix of city hotels and countryside guesthouses which gave variety.
  • Getting to try regional cuisines — from northern Beijing specialties to southwestern flavours, each region surprised me.

An Incredible 21-Day China Experience - Eye-Opening & Seamless

I recently completed the “21-Day China Tour from Shanghai” with Asia Odyssey Travel, and as a traveler from the U.S., I found the journey both impressive and very well managed.

Starting in Shanghai, our arrival went smoothly — airport pick-up, a comfortable downtown hotel, and a friendly local guide who helped us get oriented right away. From there, the itinerary took us through a carefully curated mix of China’s highlights: we explored ancient towns, visited imposing historical monuments, traveled on high-speed trains and domestic flights, and experienced both modern cities and scenic countryside.

Some of the standout moments for me:

  • Walking through the old-city lanes and seeing the contrast of modern skyscrapers and traditional architecture.
  • Visiting iconic landmarks (palaces, temples, historic walls) that helped me appreciate China’s deep history.
  • Getting a taste of regional cuisine — from street-food stalls to more refined local restaurants — and discovering how varied Chinese food is.
  • Being impressed by the logistics: the hotels were well chosen, transport connections worked without major hiccups, and the guides were knowledgeable and professional.

I highly recommend this tour to fellow American travelers. It offers an excellent balance of history, nature, and city life — all arranged in a smart, hassle-free manner. Thanks to Asia Odyssey Travel for making it an unforgettable experience.

Amazing 30-Day Journey Across China — Well Organized and Truly Worth It

I just came back from the 30-Day China Panorama Tour from Guangzhou with Asia Odyssey Travel, and it was truly one of the most memorable trips I’ve ever joined.

From the moment I landed in Guangzhou, everything was well-coordinated. The local guide greeted us at the airport and made us feel welcome right away. We started with classic Cantonese highlights like the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Lychee Bay, and traditional dim sum — a great introduction to southern China’s culture.

The route that followed was impressive. We cruised along the Li River in Guilin, cycled through Yangshuo’s peaceful countryside, and admired the Longji Rice Terraces. In Yunnan, Dali and Lijiang’s old towns were full of character, with snow-capped mountains in the distance. Chengdu was all about pandas and Sichuan food, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong looked like scenes from a painting, and Chongqing’s mountain city views were unforgettable. The trip ended with Beijing’s Great Wall and Forbidden City, and Shanghai’s skyline — the perfect contrast of history and modern life.

Everything ran smoothly throughout. The guides were professional and friendly, the hotels were clean and comfortable, and transportation was efficient. My personal highlights were sharing bamboo rice with local villagers in Longji, standing by the turquoise lakes of Jiuzhaigou, and watching the city lights in Chongqing after dinner.
