Leisure Way to Explore Mount Huashan: Best for Families & Seniors

One Day to Escape History. A Nature Break at Mount Huashan. Known as the "Steepest of the Five Great Mountains," Mount Huashan offers vertical cliffs, thrilling Plank Walk, granite masterpiece of nature.

While there are 4 routes to conquer the mountain, AOT Team recommends this 1-day private Mount Huashan tour from Xi'an specific route “the Luxury Peak-to-Peak Loop (West Up, West Down)”. Best for FAMILIES, SENIORS, or anyone seeking maximum views with minimum sweat.

Take West Peak Cable Car directly to the summit. You will loop around the West, South, and East peaks before returning to the West Peak to descend. It skips the climb from the North Peak while still hitting the 3 most beautiful summits.

Price Tip from AOT: The cost is slightly higher due to the premium West Peak cable car tickets, but the comfort is worth it.

What make Xian Tour Different?
Mary

Mary from our local team shares the latest on Mount Hua: "Unlike the sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie (Avatar Mountains), Huashan is famous for its dramatic granite scenery. It is steep and breathtaking. With our 'West Up & West Down' route, you can experience the thrill of the peak without the exhausting climb."

You Can Experience “Must-see & Must-do” with This Tour

Highlight 1
Ride West Peak Cable Car (20 minutes, 4211 meters). You float through clouds and granite peaks, offering the most spectacular aerial views of the mountain’s dangerous beauty.
Highlight 2
Hike to South Peak. The highest point of Huashan (2,154m). You can try terrifying "Plank Walk in the Sky" here, 30cm-wide wooden board bolted to a vertical cliff with a bottomless drop.
Highlight 3
Continue hike to East Peak. Daredevils can try the "Sparrow Hawk Turning Over," a vertical cliff descent where you must face the wall to reach the Chess Pavilion.
Highlight 4
Move your steps to Serene Heart (Middle Peak) filled with Taoist legends. Visit Jade Maiden Temple and root-twisted pine trees. It serves as the central connecting point between the other three main peaks.

Day 1 Xi'an - Mount Huashan - Xi'an | West Up & West Down (West Peak - South - East - Middle - West)

This morning, our local guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Xi'an for the trip to Mount Huashan, located 118km away (about 1.5 to 2-hour drive).

As one of the "Five Sacred Mountains" of Taoism, Mount Huashan is famous for its steep, narrow paths and stunning natural scenery. Home to five distinct peaks, it has long been considered the most precipitous mountain in China, featuring sheer granite rock faces, rugged cliffs, and deep valleys.

Recommended Route: West Up & West Down (Leisure Loop)

Designed by AOT local experts for families and seniors.

Route: Cable Car → West Peak → South Peak → Plank Road in the Sky → East Peak → Middle Peak → West Peak → Cable Car (4-5 hours).

Upon arrival, you will board a tourist bus to the West Peak Cableway station. Here, a cable car will take you directly to the summit area. Suspended over 900 meters above the valley, the ride offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks—an experience you won’t want to miss.

Your first stop is the West Peak (also known as Lotus Peak due to its unique shape carved from a massive rock). It is steep and awe-inspiring. From there, a 30-minute walk takes you to the South Peak, the highest point on Mount Huashan, offering a panoramic view of the other four peaks.

Descending 15 minutes from the South Peak, you will encounter the famous Plank Walk in the Sky. This thrilling, narrow path built along a vertical cliff is considered one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world. Continue hiking for about 40 minutes to reach the East Peak, known for its breathtaking views, ancient trees, and attractions like the Sparrow Hawk Turning Over and the Chess Playing Pavilion.

Spend around 40 minutes exploring the East Peak before heading back to the West Peak Cableway station via a different trail near the Central Peak. Take the cable car down, where your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Xi'an.

Optional Thrill Experiences

Note: Based on our experience, only 10% of travelers choose to try these thrill activities. You can decide on the spot and tell your guide your choice.

  1. Plank Walk in the Sky (South Peak): One of the world's most terrifying trails. It is a 30-meter-long path, only about 30cm (1 foot) wide. Takes 30-40 minutes round trip. (Note: It is not recommended for those without hiking experience or those with a fear of heights.)
  2. Sparrow Hawk Turning Over (East Peak): The second most famous "daredevil" attraction and the only way to reach the Chess Pavilion. You must face the cliff wall, hold the iron chains with both hands, and twist your body and legs in mid-air to descend.

AOT Drop-off Service: We can drop you off at your hotel in Xi'an, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, or any railway station. Please let us know your schedule in advance.
