Where Is the Burana Tower in Kyrgyzstan?

You'll find this lonely giant—Burana Tower—sitting in the middle of the green Chuy Valley. It's about 80 kilometers east of the capital, just outside a town called Tokmok.

It used to be twice as tall, but an earthquake gave it a "haircut" centuries ago. Now, it stands 25 meters high, surrounded by mysterious stone warriors called balbals.

Each path has its own charm. The bus is great for people-watching, the train is perfect for photographers, and a local or private taxi is unbeatable for speed.

But if you want the full story behind those ancient stones without worrying about "Two-Leg Journeys" or taxi bargaining, our all-inclusive Kyrgyzstan tour is the way to go!

Plan A. Bishkek to Burana Tower by Bus (Marshrutka): 2 Legs Journey in 2h

The Bishkek to Burana bus option is for the adventurous soul! It's a classic 2-leg journey that lets you rub shoulders with the locals and experience the "marshrutka culture."

Step 1: Bishkek to Tokmok by Bus First

  • Route: Bishkek East Bus Station ↔ Tokmok Bus Station
  • Departure: 6:00 AM until 8:00 PM
  • **Travel Time:**5 hours

To take the Bishkek to Tokmok bus, head over to the Bishkek East Bus Station (Vostochnyi). You're looking for the #353 marshrutka.

These are 16-to-20-seater minibuses, though don't be surprised if a few extra people squeeze in on stools in the aisle—it's all part of the charm!

They leave every 15–20 minutes once they're full from 6:00 AM until 8:00 PM. The ride from Bishkek to Tokmok typically takes about 1.5 hours, depending on how many stops the driver makes along the way to pick up passengers.

You'll eventually roll into the Tokmok Bus Station (Avtovokzal), which is a bustling little hub right in the center of town. The ride costs about 100 Soms ($1.15).

Step 2: Take a Local Taxi from Tormok Bus Station to Burana Tower

  • Route: Tokmok Bus Station ↔ Burana Tower
  • Travel Time: 15 minutes

Once you hop off at the Tokmok Bus Station, drivers will be waiting and will likely spot you first!

Negotiate a round trip for about 500–800 Soms ($5.70–$9.15) is recommended! This is the "Bishkek to Burana Tower" final stretch—a quick 15-minute drive through local villages.

Make sure to tell your driver to wait for you at the tower for an hour while you explore before taking you back to the station!

Plan B. Bishkek to Burana Tower by Train (2h): It Departs in the Evening

If you're like me and love a bit of "slow travel," the train is a hidden gem. It's roomy, quiet, and the cheapest way to watch the Kyrgyz countryside roll by.

Step 1: First, Bishkek to Tokmok by Train

  • Route: Bishkek-2 Railway Station ↔ Tokmok Railway Station
  • Departure: 18:35
  • Travel Time: 1-hour and 40-minute

The Bishkek to Tokmok train departs from Bishkek-2 Railway Station (the one at the south end of Erkindik Boulevard is better!).

This is a once-a-day kind of adventure for the commuter train, plus a morning "Issyk-Kul" train during the summer months (June–September). See 5 options for getting from Bishkek to Issyk-Kul >>

It departs from Bishkek-2 at 18:35, arriving in Tokmok at 20:28. The ride is a 1-hour and 40-minute chug for just 60 Soms ($0.70).

Finally, the train pulls right into the Tokmok Railway Station.

Important: Because the departure is in the evening, this is only a good option if you plan to stay overnight in Tokmok or are taking the early morning train back to Bishkek!

Step 2: Tormok Railway Station to Burana Tower by Taxi

  • Route: Tokmok Railway Station ↔ Burana Tower
  • Travel Time: 15 minutes

The Tokmok Railway Station is a bit quieter than the bus station, but don't worry—there are usually a few taxis waiting outside for the train's arrival.

If not, open your Yandex Go app. It's a quick 15-minute dash to the tower gate for about 300 Soms ($3.45).

Similarly, since the tower is in a field, you'll want your driver to wait with an extra 400–500 Soms ($4.50–$5.70), so you aren't stranded.

Plan C. Bishkek to Burana Tower by Private Taxi (1.5-2h): Door-to-Door

Want to go door-to-door? A local taxi or a private Yandex Go from your hotel in Bishkek is the easiest way.

It'll cost you roughly 1,500–2,200 Soms ($17–$25) one way. The ride takes 1.5 - 2 hours.

Remember: Ask your driver to wait for an extra 500 Soms ($5.70). Finding a ride back from the middle of a field is much harder than getting there!

Ancient Statues: Don't miss the "balbals" in the field nearby. These are 6th-century stone grave markers. Each one has a unique face and story.
