Remember, it was last spring when I received an inquiry email from Mark's family in London. This British couple, with their 12-year-old twins, planned to spend the children's spring break in China. Mark wrote that he and his wife Emma had been fascinated by Chinese culture since their university days. Now, years later with children of their own, they had always dreamed of showing their kids the real China, especially Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai, and not just pictures in textbooks.

Little did anyone know that their trip would face its first hurdle with the ever-changing online visa process!

Three Days of Step-by-Step Assistance with Online Visa Process

I soon discovered that the couple was unfamiliar with the online visa system. They didn't understand the various required documents, such as employment certificates, proof of assets, and itinerary plans. Moreover, the system's technical jargon posed a significant challenge, even causing them anxiety.

During a video call, Mark's hair was disheveled. He said with a wry smile, "We've failed to upload the passport scans three times already." Emma quietly added that she had been working overtime for several days just to prepare the materials so they could submit the application on time.

What was most heartbreaking were the two children. In the video, their daughter Lily kept asking her parents, "Will we still get to see the Great Wall?" while their son Tom sullenly played with his little terracotta warrior model. The anxiety in the parents' eyes and the children's expectant gazes made me determined to help them make this trip happen, no matter what.

I started communicating with them every day through emails and late-night video calls, carefully explaining the key points of each document.

When helping Mark revise his employment certificate, I realized that his company's HR department was completely unaware of the Chinese visa requirements, and the certificates they issued were always missing crucial information. I had to personally write a template in English and send it to them. The proof of assets was even more troublesome. The format of UK bank statements was completely different from what was required, so I taught Mark how to combine multiple documents into a compliant PDF.

I remember the night before submission being the most stressful. Mark suddenly realized that the dates on the hotel booking confirmations in the itinerary didn't match, and he frantically rubbed his face in the video call. We contacted all the hotels overnight to reissue the confirmation letters. For their headache with material formats and sizes, I patiently assisted them with modifications. By the time all the materials were successfully uploaded, it was three o'clock in the morning in London.

Three days later, when they received the email confirming their visas had been approved, Mark immediately sent me a photo of his whole family cheering.

Happy Seniors and Kids on a China Golden Triangle Family Trip

The visa was just the first hurdle. Mark and Emma wanted to see Chinese culture, but the children might not be as interested. So, I specifically included a visit to Beijing Universal Studios in the itinerary, ensuring the kids had fun while allowing the couple to slow down their pace during the trip.

During their days in Beijing, Emma remarked on the Great Wall that her father had visited China before and would often talk about Chinese cities at the dinner table or sit on the homemade tree stump in front of their house, sharing his travel experiences. Now, she stood here with her children, carrying her father's memories alongside her own new ones.

Beijing Mutianyu Great Wall

At Beijing Universal Studios, the two children skipped and ran around excitedly, gesturing as they chatted with local children. The WhatsApp photos they sent me showed no disappointment or fatigue, making all the hard work feel worthwhile.

The Terracotta Army in Xi'an thoroughly excited Mark. Even the guide praised his extensive knowledge as he explained things to the children.

The Bund's night view in Shanghai made Tom exclaim, "It's like a science fiction movie!" Most amusingly, Lily, who was initially resistant to Chinese food, actively asked for another basket of xiaolongbao (steamed dumplings) after trying them.

Before returning home, Mark sent me a WhatsApp message saying that this trip had updated their whole family's impression of China. Emma quietly told me that the experience had made the two children actively request to learn Chinese, and they were already planning their next trip to Yunnan.

Whenever I see family photos sent by guests, such heartwarming moments are my greatest motivation for doing this job. I'm already looking forward to planning their Yunnan tour!
