An early morning visit to Tenchen Choeling Nunnery will be arranged, where you can join a group of monks in their daily prayers and light 108 butter lamps (Included) as part of a meaningful spiritual offering. This provides a more authentic and immersive experience compared to Kyichu or Tachog Lhakhang, where only a few resident monks are present and group prayers are not typically conducted in the early morning.

Day 3 Paro Tour | Tiger's Nest Monastery Hiking, Kyichu Lhakhang
Altitude: 2,270-3,120m I Distance: 30km, about 1.5 hours' drive

Start your day with a memorable trek to the iconic Tiger’s Nest. Following a 30 minutes drive from Paro, you'll begin your scenic ascent to this sacred cliffside retreat, arguably the most breathtaking spiritual site in the entire kingdom.

Trek the scenic 9.6 km trail to Tiger’s Nest, a rewarding journey of about five to six hours. You can ride a horse (Optional, self-paid) to the midway cafeteria for stunning views and lunch. The path features serene forests and colorful prayer flags overlooking Paro Valley. Visit during April to witness rhododendrons in full bloom, adding a vibrant layer to this spiritual pilgrimage.

Standing opposite Tiger’s Nest (3,120m), you can see Bhutan’s most famous landmark high above the Paro Valley. Legend says Guru Rinpoche came here on a tigress to meditate. Although it was rebuilt in 2005, it is still the holiest place in Bhutan. You can explore this building to feel the strong spiritual energy that is respected by Buddhists everywhere.

After the hike, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, the Temple of the Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. It is one of 108 temples built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century to subdue a mythical witch. As one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, it is a very holy place and is often used for important events by the Bhutanese royal family.

Inside the main hall, you can admire the Shakyamuni Buddha statue, which is a national treasure. The temple also holds the relic stupa of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. You can find an iron chain made by Thangtong Gyalpo, the famous bridge builder. These important items show the deep history and spiritual meaning kept inside this very sacred site.

At last, head back to Paro for overnight.

Day 4 Paro to Thimphu Tour | Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, Buddha Point, National Memorial Chorten, Takin Preserve, Thimphu Dzong

We’ll head to Thimphu today, a scenic 1.5-hour drive with a stop at the ancient iron bridge of Tamchog Lhakhang. Once in the capital (2,340m), you’ll dive into a full day of sightseeing. Highlights include the giant Buddha statue, the National Memorial Chorten, and the unique Takin Preserve, ending with the grand architecture of Tashichho Dzong.

On the way to Thimphu, visit the historic Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge over the Paro River. It was built by Thangthong Gyalpo, the legendary bridge maker. You can walk across the iron chains covered with prayer flags. While you can only see the temple from the outside, the bridge is a great way to experience Bhutanese history and tradition.

Next, visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue (Buddha Point), the world’s largest sitting Buddha and a famous landmark of Thimphu City. It is 51.5 meters tall, covered in gold, and holds 125,000 smaller statues. During festivals, you can see sacred dances here. This place also offers a great view of the Thimphu Valley and the city's unique colorful roofs from above.

As the biggest city in Bhutan, Thimphu has no traffic lights or trains. When you arrive, you can visit the National Memorial Chorten and act like a local. It is tradition to walk clockwise around the Chorten while praying. This gives you many chances to meet people and learn about their daily lives and their ideas about happiness.

Visit the National Memorial Chorten, an iconic landmark dedicated to peace and Bhutan’s third king. Afterward, head to the Motithang Takin Preserve to see the extraordinary Takin. Legend says the "Divine Madman" created this unusual animal, which looks like a goat-cow hybrid. It is a unique chance to witness Bhutan’s national symbol and hear local myths.

Then, visit Tashichho Dzong, the "Fortress of the Glorious Religion," which has been the government center since 1952. It sits by the Wang Chu River and holds the King’s offices. You can walk through the gardens and see the grand buildings. Every autumn, the Thimphu Tshechu Festival is held here, featuring sacred masked dances that are very colorful.

Note: Visiting hours for Thimphu Dzong are 5 PM to 6:30 PM on weekdays and 10 AM to 4 PM on weekends. You must have a tour guide and pass a security check to enter. You might even see the flag ceremony.

For dinner, visit the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant, founded by the Queen Mother, to try traditional Bhutanese dishes before sleeping in Thimphu.

Day 5 Thimphu to Punakha Tour | Dochula Pass (3,120m), Chimi Lhakhang, Punakha Dzong
Altitude: 2,300-1,350m I Distance: 74km, about 2.5 hours' drive

Today, you will travel from Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass. This 74km trip takes about 2.5 hours and shows you changing landscapes and altitudes. You will start in the cool climate of Thimphu and drive up to the majestic Dochula Pass (3,120m). Then, you will descend into the warm and green Punakha Valley (1,330m) at a much lower altitude.

Stop at Dochula Pass for a breathtaking view of the Himalayas, including Mt. Gangkar Puensum (7,570m). You can see the 108 memorial chortens built to honor soldiers and wish for peace. Whether you relax with a coffee or walk through the sacred shrines, this is one of the most beautiful and famous stops on your entire trip.

Next, walk to Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as the Fertility Temple. This sacred site honors the "Divine Madman" and is filled with colorful phallus symbols to repel negative energy. It is a popular destination for those seeking blessings to conceive. Witnessing the traditional rituals performed by local monks offers a fascinating look into Bhutan’s unique spiritual culture.

Then, drive to Punakha to see the beautiful Punakha Dzong. It sits where two rivers meet and is the winter home for 1,000 monks. Many royal weddings have taken place here. In the spring, you can see purple jacaranda trees blooming. During the Punakha Tshechu festival, you will see traditional dances and people wearing colorful Bhutanese clothes.

Walk across the Bazam Bridge to visit Punakha Dzong, which is famous for being built without using nails. It has a six-story tower and three courtyards for government and religious use. You can see ancient remains in the southern temple and visit the Hundred-Pillar Hall, where beautiful paintings on the walls tell the story of the Buddha’s life.

Note: Punakha Dzong is open weekdays from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and weekends from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Entry requires a licensed tour guide and a security screening.

Day 6 Punakha Tour | Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, Punakha Suspension Bridge, Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery

Today, you will have a full day to discover the city of Punakha. This morning, you will stroll alongside terraced rice paddies and commence your hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, which typically takes around one hour or less. Along the way, you might encounter local farmers diligently working in the fields, either manually or with the assistance of oxen and plows.

Visit the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning stupa dedicated to the kingdom's protectors. Built over nine years, this artistic landmark is famous for its intricate details and scenic location. Climb to the upper levels for breathtaking panoramas of the Punakha Valley, where lush rice terraces change from vibrant green to rich gold throughout the year.

After lunch, experience the thrill of the Punakha Suspension Bridge. Stretching 160 meters, it is among the longest in Bhutan. Walking across provides unforgettable panoramas of the lush Punakha Valley and the rushing Po Chu River below—a perfect spot for photography and taking in the natural scenery.

Next, head to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery. It is on a 1,550-meter hilltop with amazing views of the Punakha Valley. About 120 nuns live here to study Buddhism and learn skills like tailoring and painting. You can see their monastic life and enjoy the quiet pine forests. This sacred place is perfect for spiritual reflection and learning.

Inside the temple, discover the massive 14-foot bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara, famous for its 1,000 hands and eyes. This artistic treasure was hand-forged by local craftsmen and is the largest in the kingdom. You will also see beautiful statues of important deities. If time permits, visit the local market to browse traditional crafts and meet the friendly residents.

Day 7 Punakha to Paro Tour | Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, Paro Dzong, Bhutan National Museum

Today, you will depart Punakha and head back to Paro (110km, about 3.5h) via Dochula Pass again and overnight in Paro after visiting Paro Dzong, Bhutan National Museum.

Next, explore the historic Paro Dzong, built by the founder of Bhutan in the 17th century. Enter via a charming wooden bridge to discover an architectural masterpiece that dominates the valley skyline. Then, hike to the Bhutan National Museum, which is the tallest building in the country. It was built in 1649 as a watchtower and became a museum in 1968.
