Harbin Location Map: Where is Harbin in China

Harbin lies in northeastern China, in Heilongjiang Province, hugging the Russian border. It's about 1,200 km northeast of Beijing and can be reached by a 2-hour flight or a 7–8-hour high-speed train.

This northern location makes Harbin a natural winter paradise. Every year from December to February, temperatures dip below –20°C, snow piles high, and the city transforms into a glowing world of ice art.

Fun fact: Harbin's history is deeply influenced by Russian immigrants and engineers who helped build the Chinese Eastern Railway in the early 1900s. That's why you'll see onion domes, European façades, and Russian bakeries all over town.

Harbin's layout is simple once you know the key divide: the Songhua River runs through the city, splitting it into two main halves:

  • South of the River (Downtown Area) – This is where most travelers stay. It's home to Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie), St. Sophia Cathedral, shopping streets, restaurants, and hotels. Everything is walkable and full of life, especially during winter nights.
  • North of the River (Sun Island Area) – This side is all about snow fun. You'll find Sun Island Park, Harbin Ice and Snow World, and the International Snow Sculpture Art Expo here.

Crossing the river by bridge or taxi takes just 10–15 minutes, and during deep winter, locals even walk on the frozen river—it's an experience you can't have anywhere else in China.

There are three main venues, each offering a different experience:

  1. Harbin Ice and Snow World – Located on the north side of the Songhua River near Sun Island, this is the grandest part of the festival. Expect towering ice castles, neon lights, and slides made of pure ice. Come at night—it's a glowing wonderland.
  2. Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Expo – On the south side of Sun Island, this is where you'll find massive, detailed snow sculptures best viewed in daylight. It's quieter and more artistic.
  3. Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Garden Party – Near Central Street, this park fills with smaller ice sculptures, colorful lights, and a local vibe—perfect for a family stroll after dinner.

Tip: Get the festival combo ticket if you plan to visit all three sites—it's cheaper and includes shuttles between venues.

We Booked Victoria Jenna Cruise Through Asia Odyssey Travel after reading reviews through Trip Advisor. We did the three night Chongqing to Yichang. Ashley He was our travel consultant and provided excellent, efficient and timely communication both during the reservation booking and prior to boarding regarding location of the ship. Our family of four enjoyed the cruise very much and appreciated the English spoken by the staff. We did upgrade to the VIP status (about $100 per person) where the upstairs dining was excellent. Full buffets of wonderful variety of freshly prepared and delicious choices for both breakfast and lunch. Dinner was served per your menu choice (western) for the two evenings. The ship has been remodeled and was very clean and tastefully done. The cabins were very comfortable with good bedding. Service all around was excellent, friendly and polite. read more

I completed a 16 day Tibet tour with Asia Odyssey Travel which included Lhasa, EBC, Kailash kora and Guge kingdom, and was very satisfied with all the detailed services, transport arrangements (despite some days with long drives), and hotels provided.  Our tour guide Samdrup was very attentive to the groups needs.  I am grateful that the company was one of the few that was able to expedite my necessary Tibet permits within less than 2 weeks of my travel due to my last minute planning and visa delay. My travel agent Ashley communicated closely throughout the process for reassurance. All in all, it was a good experience and makes me more confident in other potential tours with this company.  read more
