Surabaya Map: Surabaya City, Location & Tourist Map (2026 Updated)

Written by Celine Schneider|Updated: 2025-11-20

Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, doesn't get the tourist attention that Bali or Yogyakarta commands. Most travelers fly through Juanda Airport en route to Mount Bromo, spending maybe one rushed night in the city before dawn volcano tours.

We're not trying to sell you on Surabaya as a destination. It's primarily a gateway city. But you may be here for 12-24 hours before your Bromo trip.

This means you have a few practical questions. Where is the airport relative to the train stations? Where to spend your time in the city? Which district has decent hotels? And how do the routes to Bromo actually work?

Asia Odyssey Travel, with extensive experience navigating Surabaya's logistics, has created practical Surabaya maps focused on what transit travelers actually need. Download Surabaya Maps free.

Surabaya on Map: Where is Surabaya in Indonesia Located

Let's pinpoint Surabaya's location. Geographically, it sits on the island of Java, which is in the western half of the Indonesia's archipelago. Its coordinates are approximately 7.2° S latitude and 112.7° E longitude.

As you can see on the map, Surabaya is a major port city on the northeastern coast of Java, right next to the Madura Strait. It is also the capital of the East Java province.

For travelers, Surabaya's location is its biggest advantage. It acts as a perfect hub, connecting Central Java (where Yogyakarta is) with all the top destinations to the east.

This makes it the main gateway for trips to Mount Bromo, Ijen Crater, and the ferry crossing to Bali.

Now, let's take a closer look at this city map to get a good feel for Surabaya. The city itself is large, covering about 350 square kilometers. But you don't need to worry about most of that space.

Your time in Surabaya will likely be spent in three main areas: the southern area by the airport, the city center with its shopping malls, and the Old Town in the north, which is full of old colonial buildings.

Pinpointing the City Center: Shopping & Main Accommodation Area

Where is Surabaya's "downtown"? For tourists, the easiest way to locate the city center is by finding the area around massive Tunjungan Plaza shopping mall complex. This area, located roughly between the two main train stations (Gubeng Station).

Gubeng Station, your likely departure point for Bromo, is conveniently located just east of this district. The area between these two points is also a popular place for tourists to stay.

The Old Town & Arab Quarter (Northern Surabaya)

This district offers a stark contrast to the modern CBD. It's filled with colonial-era buildings and historical museums. You can explore bustling traditional markets. You will also find the influential Ampel Mosque here. It's the historical and multicultural soul of the city.

Transportation Hubs Remain Key

Juanda International Airport (SUB): South of the city.

Bungurasih Bus Terminal: Southern edge of Surabaya near the airport. If you're taking a bus to Probolinggo instead of the train, you'll depart from here.

Gubeng Station: Central-east, the main station for Bromo-bound trains.

Pasar Turi Station: Central-north, for other train routes.

Tanjung Perak Port: Far north.

Let's be honest about something: most travelers don't spend much time exploring Surabaya itself. This isn't Bali or Yogyakarta, where ancient temples and stunning landscapes compete for your attention.

Surabaya is a working city, Indonesia's commercial powerhouse, and that authenticity becomes its appeal for the travelers who do take time to look around.

If you have several hours or a full day before heading to Mount Bromo, a few genuinely worthwhile attractions exist that offer glimpses into the city's character. We've focused on places that offer a strong sense of the city's identity – its history, culture, and spirit.

Heroes Monument (Tugu Pahlawan): Located near the governor's office, this imposing monument is the symbol of Surabaya and commemorates the Battle of Surabaya during the Indonesian National Revolution. It's a must-see to understand the city's "Heroic" nickname.

House of Sampoerna: Situated south of the Old Town, this beautifully preserved Dutch colonial building houses a fascinating museum dedicated to the history of Indonesia's famous Sampoerna kretek (clove) cigarettes. You can even watch workers hand-rolling cigarettes at incredible speed.

The Arab Quarter (north) surrounding Ampel Mosque creates an atmosphere that feels distinctly Middle Eastern despite being in Southeast Asia. The mosque itself, one of Java's oldest. This area pulses with local life.

Surabaya Chinatown (north): Situated near the Old Town and Arab Quarter, this historic area is the heart of Surabaya's Chinese community. Explore the atmospheric old streets, visit the venerable Hong Tiek Hian Temple (one of the oldest Chinese temples in Surabaya).

Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Selam / Monkasel): Located near Gubeng Station, this is a real retired Russian submarine that you can actually go inside and explore. It's a quirky and interesting attraction, especially if you have an interest in naval history.

Tunjungan Plaza stretches across multiple connected buildings as one of Indonesia's largest shopping complexes. The food court on the upper levels serves reliable Indonesian dishes, and the supermarket stocks everything you might need for your mountain trip.

Surabaya Zoo: Located south of the city center, this is one of the oldest and largest zoos in Southeast Asia. It offers the chance to see diverse Indonesian wildlife, including Komodo dragons. It remains a popular spot for local families.

For a transit traveler focused on convenience, choosing the right place to eat and sleep near your departure point is crucial.

This map focuses on the three key areas most relevant to visitors passing through: the area around Tunjungan Plaza (the city center), near Gubeng Station (for Bromo travelers), and close to the Airport (for quick connections).

Tunjungan Plaza Area (City Center)

Accommodation: Direct access to Surabaya's largest mall complex. Great for those wanting a taste of modern Surabaya. Offers mid-range to luxury international hotels (e.g., Sheraton Surabaya, JW Marriott).

Highly-Rated Restaurants Near Tunjungan Plaza

  • Depot Bu Rudy Anjasmoro: (Multiple locations, easy to find) Famous for its Nasi Udang Empal (rice with shrimp and fried beef) and fiery sambal (chili paste). A true Surabaya institution, great for authentic local flavors.
  • Nasi Kulit Mak Igun Surabaya Pusat: (Often requires a short taxi ride) Highly praised for incredibly fresh grilled seafood cooked in various Indonesian styles. Expect a lively atmosphere.
  • Genteng Besar (night market): This is a long night market street where food carts gather. It's a popular spot where locals come to find great food. Lontong Balap is a must-try; it is the signature dish of Surabaya.

Gubeng Station Area: For Budget Traveler

Extremely convenient for catching early morning trains to Probolinggo (for Bromo) or other destinations. Plenty of budget-friendly guesthouses and mid-range business hotels within walking distance of the station.

  • Lapis Kukus Pahlawan Toko Gubeng Baru: Legendary spot for Rawon, Surabaya's signature black beef soup. Known for opening late and its rich flavor.
  • Depot Slamet: Famous for Soto Ayam Lamongan, a flavorful chicken soup specialty originating from the Lamongan region, served with various toppings.

Near Juanda Airport (SUB)

Ideal for very early departures or late arrivals. Eliminates the worry of city traffic. Offers reliable airport hotels often with shuttle services (e.g., Ibis Budget Surabaya Airport).

The Surabaya to Mount Bromo Map: Your Route to the Famous Volcano

Surabaya to Mount Bromo Map
Surabaya to Mount Bromo Map

This is arguably the most crucial map for many visitors using Surabaya as their gateway. It clearly outlines the main routes and base locations for accessing the majestic Mount Bromo, helping you choose the best plan based on your time, and desired experience.

First, let's understand the classic Bromo experience you're aiming for. It typically involves:

  1. Traveling from Surabaya to a village/town near the volcano.
  2. Waking up extremely early (around 2-3 AM).
  3. Taking a 4x4 Jeep up to a viewpoint (like Penanjakan 1) to watch the sunrise over the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
  4. After sunrise, the Jeep takes you down across the "Sea of Sand" to the base of Mount Bromo.
  5. You then hike up the stairs to the rim of the smoking Bromo crater. eturn to your village for breakfast before heading to your next destination.

Route 1: Surabaya direct to Cemoro Lawang (The Closest Village)

This involves traveling directly from Surabaya to Cemoro Lawang, the village perched right on the edge of the Bromo caldera. Approximately 3-4 hours by private car.

This route primarily relies on private car hire or pre-booked tour packages. Booking a complete package with a provider like Asia Odyssey Travel, for example**,** is an easy way to ensure your car, local hotel, and the essential 4x4 Jeep tour are all arranged for you seamlessly.

If staying in Cemoro Lawang, you'll need to leave your guesthouse/hotel with the Jeep around 3:00 AM - 3:30 AM to reach the sunrise viewpoint in time. This is the most convenient option for the sunrise tour.

Route 2: Surabaya to Mount Bromo via Malang (The Scenic Alternative)

Travel from Surabaya south to the pleasant city of Malang, stay overnight, and then take a longer Jeep tour from Malang (via Tumpang) to Bromo for sunrise.

Surabaya to Malang is about 2-3 hours by train or car. The Jeep tour from Malang to Bromo viewpoints takes 2-3 hours each way.

If starting from Malang, your Jeep tour will likely pick you up very early, around midnight or 1:00 AM, due to the longer travel distance to the viewpoints.

Route 3: Surabaya to Mount Bromo via Probolinggo (The Budget / Independent Hub)

Travel from Surabaya east to the transport hub town of Probolinggo. From Probolinggo, arrange onward transport (minibus or private car) up to Cemoro Lawang.

Surabaya to Probolinggo is about 2 hours by train or car. Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang is another 1-1.5 hours by car/minibus.

Staying overnight in Probolinggo itself is not recommended for the sunrise tour, as you would need to leave extremely early (around midnight) and arrange private transport for the entire trip up and down.

Most travelers using Probolinggo as a hub continue straight to Cemoro Lawang to stay overnight, allowing for the later 3:00-3:30 AM departure from there.
